New

Welcome back! Season 4 opens with a self-indulgent, naval gazing look at the new player experience through the eyes of one my players: Matt Street. Matt joined my homebrew campaign in session 0 way back at the beginning of 2019 with his Tortle sorcerer A'Therin Trolldoor. Since then, over six chapters we've lost two players, four PCs and several NPCs. Matt shares his experiences learning D&D 5e from the ground up, having had no TTRPG experience before; the things he wasn't expecting (rekindling childlike joy) and his most surprising takeaways! We talk through the various tips that both jaded DMs such as myself, and virgin players alike can use to aid that onboarding experience. For better and for worse, D&D still has a certain stigma surrounding it, and anything we can do to reduce those barriers and make people comfortable at the table is surely a good thing.

which you can now watch on twitch at

returning there's plenty more very

18
00:00:42,480 --> 00:00:45,600
exciting content i've got coming up in

19
00:00:43,920 --> 00:00:47,280
the next few weeks that i'm very much

20
00:00:45,600 --> 00:00:50,160
looking forward to sharing with you all

21
00:00:47,280 --> 00:00:51,199
so without much further ado let us

22
00:00:50,160 --> 00:00:52,239
return

23
00:00:51,199 --> 00:00:54,250
to

24
00:00:52,239 --> 00:01:02,720
thinking critically

25
00:00:54,250 --> 00:01:02,900
[Music]

26
00:01:02,720 --> 00:01:14,730
[Applause]

27
00:01:02,900 --> 00:01:14,730
[Music]

28
00:01:15,840 --> 00:01:21,200
and today i'm joined by matt street a

29
00:01:19,360 --> 00:01:23,920
player in my game and somebody who i

30
00:01:21,200 --> 00:01:25,360
introduced to d thank you ever so much

31
00:01:23,920 --> 00:01:27,119
for joining us today matt can you tell

32
00:01:25,360 --> 00:01:28,479
us a little bit about yourself uh it's

33
00:01:27,119 --> 00:01:31,759
an absolute pleasure to be here thank

34
00:01:28,479 --> 00:01:34,640
you danielle yeah i'm 33 years old i was

35
00:01:31,759 --> 00:01:36,240
introduced at the ripe old age of 31 to

36
00:01:34,640 --> 00:01:39,040
dnd

37
00:01:36,240 --> 00:01:40,720
it's blessed and a curse

38
00:01:39,040 --> 00:01:42,960
a lot a lot of new things have come into

39
00:01:40,720 --> 00:01:45,119
my life uh because of dnd

40
00:01:42,960 --> 00:01:46,479
um it's not my usual games i uh i'll

41
00:01:45,119 --> 00:01:48,640
probably lose you a few followers here

42
00:01:46,479 --> 00:01:50,960
download but i tend to play fifa

43
00:01:48,640 --> 00:01:53,840
um as well as fortnight with i've got

44
00:01:50,960 --> 00:01:55,280
two sons and i play a lot of games and

45
00:01:53,840 --> 00:01:58,000
first person shooter kind of things with

46
00:01:55,280 --> 00:01:59,840
them i am introducing them to d d we've

47
00:01:58,000 --> 00:02:01,680
done our first little creation of

48
00:01:59,840 --> 00:02:04,079
characters and stuff which was

49
00:02:01,680 --> 00:02:05,280
absolutely brilliant to do

50
00:02:04,079 --> 00:02:06,719
they created

51
00:02:05,280 --> 00:02:08,800
completely opposite of what i thought

52
00:02:06,719 --> 00:02:11,200
they would do which now

53
00:02:08,800 --> 00:02:13,440
the longer i'm playing dnd the more i

54
00:02:11,200 --> 00:02:14,879
see other people doing that as well in

55
00:02:13,440 --> 00:02:16,879
fact there's a little bit that i'd like

56
00:02:14,879 --> 00:02:18,959
to jump on later about some of the newer

57
00:02:16,879 --> 00:02:20,239
characters that we've seen come in more

58
00:02:18,959 --> 00:02:23,520
recently

59
00:02:20,239 --> 00:02:26,080
but no apart from absolutely loving dnd

60
00:02:23,520 --> 00:02:28,000
uh i've been mainly looking for a decent

61
00:02:26,080 --> 00:02:30,000
console game since final fantasy 9 and

62
00:02:28,000 --> 00:02:31,760
struggling pretty

63
00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:34,640
pretty badly

64
00:02:31,760 --> 00:02:35,920
um yeah that's pretty much me i think

65
00:02:34,640 --> 00:02:37,599
you just regained any followers you

66
00:02:35,920 --> 00:02:39,120
might have lost with the final fantasy 9

67
00:02:37,599 --> 00:02:41,840
reference so i think i think we just

68
00:02:39,120 --> 00:02:44,080
about broken even with there uh

69
00:02:41,840 --> 00:02:46,800
so for the context for the listeners of

70
00:02:44,080 --> 00:02:48,480
course uh for those who do uh listen

71
00:02:46,800 --> 00:02:51,120
regularly you'll hear me often talk

72
00:02:48,480 --> 00:02:53,840
about my game that i run uh my campaign

73
00:02:51,120 --> 00:02:57,200
various anonymized players and their

74
00:02:53,840 --> 00:02:59,280
their characters they're in we've had

75
00:02:57,200 --> 00:03:01,599
two players so far all the way back in

76
00:02:59,280 --> 00:03:03,440
season one episodes two and three i

77
00:03:01,599 --> 00:03:06,239
think with jack and ian and now we have

78
00:03:03,440 --> 00:03:07,920
number three with matt and of course uh

79
00:03:06,239 --> 00:03:10,400
those that do this and i've an anecdote

80
00:03:07,920 --> 00:03:12,480
i've shared several times is when

81
00:03:10,400 --> 00:03:15,120
we started playing

82
00:03:12,480 --> 00:03:17,280
we were all at the same place of work

83
00:03:15,120 --> 00:03:18,239
together which made and the reason i

84
00:03:17,280 --> 00:03:19,760
always bring this

85
00:03:18,239 --> 00:03:20,959
is because it made scheduling a piece of

86
00:03:19,760 --> 00:03:22,319
cake because

87
00:03:20,959 --> 00:03:26,000
we're working together in the same

88
00:03:22,319 --> 00:03:28,640
office and it's very easy and that's how

89
00:03:26,000 --> 00:03:31,360
you got into it with that email and yeah

90
00:03:28,640 --> 00:03:33,840
this is this is the funny thing is i was

91
00:03:31,360 --> 00:03:36,000
i had a gap in dm'ing and i wanted a new

92
00:03:33,840 --> 00:03:37,840
game i was quite close with jack who was

93
00:03:36,000 --> 00:03:40,239
on the ability episode season one

94
00:03:37,840 --> 00:03:41,840
episode two and i said look should i

95
00:03:40,239 --> 00:03:44,400
just send an email out to like everybody

96
00:03:41,840 --> 00:03:46,159
in the technical department and

97
00:03:44,400 --> 00:03:47,760
hopefully some there'll be some some

98
00:03:46,159 --> 00:03:50,080
people even with like an attrition rate

99
00:03:47,760 --> 00:03:52,080
of like 99 there should be some biters

100
00:03:50,080 --> 00:03:54,159
there that will work yeah yeah that's

101
00:03:52,080 --> 00:03:55,840
not it so i pinned this email out and it

102
00:03:54,159 --> 00:03:57,840
was a bit of a you know put my heart out

103
00:03:55,840 --> 00:03:59,519
there put my heart my sleeve

104
00:03:57,840 --> 00:04:00,560
you know a bunch of random people that

105
00:03:59,519 --> 00:04:02,640
you know i don't really work with that

106
00:04:00,560 --> 00:04:03,599
closely sometimes

107
00:04:02,640 --> 00:04:06,080
and

108
00:04:03,599 --> 00:04:08,159
there wasn't any responses for

109
00:04:06,080 --> 00:04:09,680
two weeks maybe give or takes i said

110
00:04:08,159 --> 00:04:13,040
well

111
00:04:09,680 --> 00:04:13,040
i tried i'm sad

112
00:04:13,200 --> 00:04:16,880
and then i remember you and another one

113
00:04:14,720 --> 00:04:18,720
of the players josh uh catching me in

114
00:04:16,880 --> 00:04:20,560
the in the work kitchen and be like oh

115
00:04:18,720 --> 00:04:22,400
that email you sent out and i was like

116
00:04:20,560 --> 00:04:24,320
oh god have i have i

117
00:04:22,400 --> 00:04:26,800
something with work exploding that i

118
00:04:24,320 --> 00:04:29,040
have made a mistake on no no no the dnd

119
00:04:26,800 --> 00:04:30,800
one oh yeah we we're

120
00:04:29,040 --> 00:04:32,160
yeah sign us up where do we start how do

121
00:04:30,800 --> 00:04:33,680
we play here

122
00:04:32,160 --> 00:04:35,120
and that was we had to do it in person

123
00:04:33,680 --> 00:04:36,960
we didn't want it written down somewhere

124
00:04:35,120 --> 00:04:39,120
that we wanted to play

125
00:04:36,960 --> 00:04:40,320
first and and kind of leads us nicely

126
00:04:39,120 --> 00:04:42,000
into the first bit that i wanted to

127
00:04:40,320 --> 00:04:43,919
cover which was being a new player to

128
00:04:42,000 --> 00:04:46,800
the game so

129
00:04:43,919 --> 00:04:48,400
ttp rg rpgs weren't

130
00:04:46,800 --> 00:04:49,680
i'd heard of them but i'd never been

131
00:04:48,400 --> 00:04:50,800
involved in any of them and there was

132
00:04:49,680 --> 00:04:52,639
you know people

133
00:04:50,800 --> 00:04:54,240
that were at my school and at my college

134
00:04:52,639 --> 00:04:55,919
that played them that were a different

135
00:04:54,240 --> 00:04:57,040
group of friends and lifestyle and

136
00:04:55,919 --> 00:04:57,919
things

137
00:04:57,040 --> 00:04:59,840
and

138
00:04:57,919 --> 00:05:01,440
i think what was brilliant about the

139
00:04:59,840 --> 00:05:02,800
the email that you sent out is it broke

140
00:05:01,440 --> 00:05:04,720
past the

141
00:05:02,800 --> 00:05:07,120
stereotypes of people that can play the

142
00:05:04,720 --> 00:05:10,240
game um and that's also what i'm hoping

143
00:05:07,120 --> 00:05:11,759
that i can bring to your podcast is i'm

144
00:05:10,240 --> 00:05:13,759
still struggling with a lot of the

145
00:05:11,759 --> 00:05:15,039
mechanics of the game but that's because

146
00:05:13,759 --> 00:05:16,720
it's still

147
00:05:15,039 --> 00:05:18,800
it feels to me

148
00:05:16,720 --> 00:05:21,840
really new even though i've been playing

149
00:05:18,800 --> 00:05:23,680
in your campaign for so long so

150
00:05:21,840 --> 00:05:24,720
in your email coming out me and josh

151
00:05:23,680 --> 00:05:26,800
like

152
00:05:24,720 --> 00:05:28,880
uh both project managers have access to

153
00:05:26,800 --> 00:05:30,639
the meeting rooms we need a meeting i

154
00:05:28,880 --> 00:05:32,720
really fancy playing dnd with download

155
00:05:30,639 --> 00:05:34,560
what do you think and he was like

156
00:05:32,720 --> 00:05:36,320
yeah me too but we can't let on to

157
00:05:34,560 --> 00:05:38,800
anyone else that knows that we want to

158
00:05:36,320 --> 00:05:41,120
give clandestine

159
00:05:38,800 --> 00:05:42,960
yeah wastage of company time but yeah

160
00:05:41,120 --> 00:05:44,400
love it please i like the fact that you

161
00:05:42,960 --> 00:05:46,400
thought it was like a

162
00:05:44,400 --> 00:05:49,039
you know uh perchance that we happened

163
00:05:46,400 --> 00:05:53,000
to meet you in the in the kitchen but

164
00:05:49,039 --> 00:05:53,000
secretly we were watching you foreign

165
00:05:53,280 --> 00:05:58,160
um but knowing in doing that we we both

166
00:05:55,919 --> 00:05:59,759
felt this pretty similar in that we were

167
00:05:58,160 --> 00:06:01,199
nervous about doing it we didn't want to

168
00:05:59,759 --> 00:06:02,800
make fools of ourselves we didn't want

169
00:06:01,199 --> 00:06:05,039
to seem stupid or

170
00:06:02,800 --> 00:06:06,400
you know having the mick taken out of us

171
00:06:05,039 --> 00:06:07,680
but what you were brilliant at doing was

172
00:06:06,400 --> 00:06:10,080
breaking down those barriers i think

173
00:06:07,680 --> 00:06:11,840
even in that first little bit you bought

174
00:06:10,080 --> 00:06:13,440
either elfies or you were the first

175
00:06:11,840 --> 00:06:15,759
person to put a voice on or something

176
00:06:13,440 --> 00:06:17,360
and do a bit of role play and then you

177
00:06:15,759 --> 00:06:18,880
know looking at each other we were like

178
00:06:17,360 --> 00:06:21,280
we can just

179
00:06:18,880 --> 00:06:22,560
relax into this and and enjoy it and

180
00:06:21,280 --> 00:06:24,639
what we know

181
00:06:22,560 --> 00:06:27,039
two and a bit years on yes i counted the

182
00:06:24,639 --> 00:06:28,960
other day i think it's two years seven

183
00:06:27,039 --> 00:06:31,520
months ten months between between those

184
00:06:28,960 --> 00:06:33,600
two numbers yeah which is crazy and

185
00:06:31,520 --> 00:06:35,120
certainly got me through a lockdown with

186
00:06:33,600 --> 00:06:36,560
everything and i mean all of your

187
00:06:35,120 --> 00:06:38,400
listeners are going to have suffered in

188
00:06:36,560 --> 00:06:40,160
some way because of the lockdown

189
00:06:38,400 --> 00:06:41,840
and we had that regular meet up still we

190
00:06:40,160 --> 00:06:42,880
still got to see each other's faces you

191
00:06:41,840 --> 00:06:44,639
know

192
00:06:42,880 --> 00:06:45,759
unfortunately we lost the physical

193
00:06:44,639 --> 00:06:48,080
meet-ups

194
00:06:45,759 --> 00:06:49,039
but we had that over uh discord and

195
00:06:48,080 --> 00:06:51,919
things

196
00:06:49,039 --> 00:06:53,599
so yeah it was it was huge

197
00:06:51,919 --> 00:06:56,880
but going back to being a new person to

198
00:06:53,599 --> 00:06:57,680
the game you were quite uh forgiving

199
00:06:56,880 --> 00:07:00,319
with

200
00:06:57,680 --> 00:07:02,000
you gave us a lot of basic info first

201
00:07:00,319 --> 00:07:03,759
and then you give us like that was like

202
00:07:02,000 --> 00:07:04,720
the little the little seed and you know

203
00:07:03,759 --> 00:07:06,560
maybe you want to get the players

204
00:07:04,720 --> 00:07:08,319
handbook and you gave it to us piecemeal

205
00:07:06,560 --> 00:07:11,199
almost to build us up

206
00:07:08,319 --> 00:07:12,720
but it was quite daunting for even uh

207
00:07:11,199 --> 00:07:14,080
new listeners listening to your podcast

208
00:07:12,720 --> 00:07:15,680
i've got a couple of people at work that

209
00:07:14,080 --> 00:07:17,440
started picking it up

210
00:07:15,680 --> 00:07:19,280
they're like there is so much i don't

211
00:07:17,440 --> 00:07:22,000
know and i was hoping to use it as like

212
00:07:19,280 --> 00:07:23,520
a source of i'm new to dnd i'll listen

213
00:07:22,000 --> 00:07:25,039
to this podcast that talks through all

214
00:07:23,520 --> 00:07:26,080
the aspects

215
00:07:25,039 --> 00:07:27,599
you know

216
00:07:26,080 --> 00:07:29,199
yeah there's just so much information

217
00:07:27,599 --> 00:07:30,400
coming in and that's how i felt oh i

218
00:07:29,199 --> 00:07:32,160
still feel today

219
00:07:30,400 --> 00:07:34,639
you've got a lot of you

220
00:07:32,160 --> 00:07:36,000
a lot of resources at your disposal

221
00:07:34,639 --> 00:07:38,720
and then

222
00:07:36,000 --> 00:07:40,080
a few seconds in your turn each time to

223
00:07:38,720 --> 00:07:42,479
try and get through as much as you can

224
00:07:40,080 --> 00:07:44,319
and remember all the uh yeah all the

225
00:07:42,479 --> 00:07:45,840
different bits but did you find that

226
00:07:44,319 --> 00:07:47,520
when you started

227
00:07:45,840 --> 00:07:49,360
well firstly thank you for doing my job

228
00:07:47,520 --> 00:07:50,319
for me and i have neglected to do my

229
00:07:49,360 --> 00:07:52,080
classic

230
00:07:50,319 --> 00:07:53,360
and today's topic is

231
00:07:52,080 --> 00:07:54,020
and for those who haven't already

232
00:07:53,360 --> 00:07:55,840
guessed it's new

233
00:07:54,020 --> 00:07:58,080
[Laughter]

234
00:07:55,840 --> 00:08:00,319
i jumped the gun no no you didn't at all

235
00:07:58,080 --> 00:08:02,240
i just neglected to do it uh which is

236
00:08:00,319 --> 00:08:04,319
fine hey i can't get you know 60 plus

237
00:08:02,240 --> 00:08:05,919
episodes in and be perfect in every

238
00:08:04,319 --> 00:08:08,639
single one something's got to be at like

239
00:08:05,919 --> 00:08:10,080
80 percent so we can retake then

240
00:08:08,639 --> 00:08:11,840
all the way scratch the last seven

241
00:08:10,080 --> 00:08:15,280
minutes back back to square one though

242
00:08:11,840 --> 00:08:16,080
uh never retake here all one take it

243
00:08:15,280 --> 00:08:19,039
um

244
00:08:16,080 --> 00:08:21,440
so yes so new new new players uh and

245
00:08:19,039 --> 00:08:23,440
that's why it should be really good uh

246
00:08:21,440 --> 00:08:24,720
for for you being

247
00:08:23,440 --> 00:08:26,479
obviously it's

248
00:08:24,720 --> 00:08:28,400
i have a lot of guests on with various

249
00:08:26,479 --> 00:08:29,280
different experiences but obviously i've

250
00:08:28,400 --> 00:08:32,000
seen

251
00:08:29,280 --> 00:08:33,039
you grow from as you've just described

252
00:08:32,000 --> 00:08:36,159
like

253
00:08:33,039 --> 00:08:38,240
i don't know what tt rpg stands for yeah

254
00:08:36,159 --> 00:08:40,959
ted now like oh i'm thinking of rolling

255
00:08:38,240 --> 00:08:42,240
this and here's my smite damage and this

256
00:08:40,959 --> 00:08:44,320
that and the other and here's how many

257
00:08:42,240 --> 00:08:46,399
dice i'm rolling and stuff so it's

258
00:08:44,320 --> 00:08:48,640
there's quite a good visible

259
00:08:46,399 --> 00:08:51,120
kind of graph there of

260
00:08:48,640 --> 00:08:54,320
knowledge and growth over the last let's

261
00:08:51,120 --> 00:08:55,839
call it two and a half years yeah and

262
00:08:54,320 --> 00:08:57,040
the other thing i wanted to talk about

263
00:08:55,839 --> 00:08:58,560
before we look back around and answer

264
00:08:57,040 --> 00:09:00,640
your original question but it's the

265
00:08:58,560 --> 00:09:03,680
prerogative of the host so

266
00:09:00,640 --> 00:09:05,680
whatever uh is

267
00:09:03,680 --> 00:09:07,839
is i think i haven't mentioned this to

268
00:09:05,680 --> 00:09:09,920
you guys before but it'll be useful to

269
00:09:07,839 --> 00:09:10,880
get it on on record is i think you guys

270
00:09:09,920 --> 00:09:12,240
are

271
00:09:10,880 --> 00:09:14,560
in a very

272
00:09:12,240 --> 00:09:17,279
rather unique situation in that your

273
00:09:14,560 --> 00:09:18,399
first and only game has been

274
00:09:17,279 --> 00:09:22,000
one that will

275
00:09:18,399 --> 00:09:23,760
last for four years and be like 200

276
00:09:22,000 --> 00:09:25,440
sessions in because

277
00:09:23,760 --> 00:09:27,680
yeah a lot of people don't ever have

278
00:09:25,440 --> 00:09:28,800
that ever and they've been playing

279
00:09:27,680 --> 00:09:30,800
10 years

280
00:09:28,800 --> 00:09:32,800
and they won't have a game like that so

281
00:09:30,800 --> 00:09:34,000
for that to be your first

282
00:09:32,800 --> 00:09:35,200
it's i think a lot of listeners are

283
00:09:34,000 --> 00:09:36,880
going back oh

284
00:09:35,200 --> 00:09:38,000
wow they really dived in at the deep end

285
00:09:36,880 --> 00:09:39,600
which is

286
00:09:38,000 --> 00:09:41,600
maybe a mistake on my part but

287
00:09:39,600 --> 00:09:43,680
[Laughter]

288
00:09:41,600 --> 00:09:46,000
yeah because it went from that uh

289
00:09:43,680 --> 00:09:47,680
little session zero where you give it

290
00:09:46,000 --> 00:09:49,440
which is what we thought it was like it

291
00:09:47,680 --> 00:09:51,680
was just a kind of like a one-hit kind

292
00:09:49,440 --> 00:09:53,200
of thing

293
00:09:51,680 --> 00:09:54,959
you roped us in for life and we had to

294
00:09:53,200 --> 00:09:56,720
sign contracts and

295
00:09:54,959 --> 00:09:58,000
i don't see my children and my family

296
00:09:56,720 --> 00:09:59,360
yeah i didn't i didn't get your payment

297
00:09:58,000 --> 00:10:01,120
last month either matt can you sort that

298
00:09:59,360 --> 00:10:02,839
out because

299
00:10:01,120 --> 00:10:05,839
oh man oh

300
00:10:02,839 --> 00:10:08,000
man but no it's um

301
00:10:05,839 --> 00:10:10,320
yeah as especially as i've you know been

302
00:10:08,000 --> 00:10:12,000
exposed to more of the the dnd world and

303
00:10:10,320 --> 00:10:14,959
not just your podcast but you know on

304
00:10:12,000 --> 00:10:17,360
youtube and people i've spoken to

305
00:10:14,959 --> 00:10:19,279
most sessions don't go past

306
00:10:17,360 --> 00:10:21,519
10 12

307
00:10:19,279 --> 00:10:23,279
and they'll start at level 9 or whatever

308
00:10:21,519 --> 00:10:25,680
they choose to go in at

309
00:10:23,279 --> 00:10:28,160
um so to do a proper ground up

310
00:10:25,680 --> 00:10:30,240
is it's brilliant for me as a player and

311
00:10:28,160 --> 00:10:32,959
i recommend it to everyone the only

312
00:10:30,240 --> 00:10:34,399
thing that i thought of is would it be

313
00:10:32,959 --> 00:10:36,640
would it have been a benefit to have

314
00:10:34,399 --> 00:10:38,720
done a scripted pre you know pre-packed

315
00:10:36,640 --> 00:10:40,320
one before i did this but i don't think

316
00:10:38,720 --> 00:10:42,800
it would have been because

317
00:10:40,320 --> 00:10:44,640
the bit i enjoy is some weeks me and

318
00:10:42,800 --> 00:10:46,079
josh used to go in with we're gonna wind

319
00:10:44,640 --> 00:10:47,200
everyone up this week we're not going to

320
00:10:46,079 --> 00:10:49,360
take this one too seriously we've had a

321
00:10:47,200 --> 00:10:51,760
rough day at work you know we've got

322
00:10:49,360 --> 00:10:53,600
that flexibility whereas in the more

323
00:10:51,760 --> 00:10:55,600
scripted ones i don't i don't know if

324
00:10:53,600 --> 00:10:57,360
that flexibility is there

325
00:10:55,600 --> 00:10:59,360
oh well me neither to be honest but now

326
00:10:57,360 --> 00:11:02,640
i know you two were conspiring against

327
00:10:59,360 --> 00:11:04,079
my carefully crafted

328
00:11:02,640 --> 00:11:06,320
i hope that wasn't any of like the

329
00:11:04,079 --> 00:11:08,320
campaign ends or like the really serious

330
00:11:06,320 --> 00:11:10,480
face you know like someone's dying and

331
00:11:08,320 --> 00:11:14,360
there's you and josh like do

332
00:11:10,480 --> 00:11:14,360
i'm gonna fart on him

333
00:11:17,200 --> 00:11:21,360
but then again it is

334
00:11:18,720 --> 00:11:23,440
rather whimsical if i do say myself uh

335
00:11:21,360 --> 00:11:24,480
our campaign oof

336
00:11:23,440 --> 00:11:25,839
um

337
00:11:24,480 --> 00:11:28,480
but no it's

338
00:11:25,839 --> 00:11:31,279
that is a good question i don't know the

339
00:11:28,480 --> 00:11:33,680
answer as to whether playing

340
00:11:31,279 --> 00:11:34,800
a short form one would be better on the

341
00:11:33,680 --> 00:11:36,399
one hand

342
00:11:34,800 --> 00:11:37,680
immediately i'm like oh probably yeah

343
00:11:36,399 --> 00:11:38,880
because you get to learn a few bits and

344
00:11:37,680 --> 00:11:40,160
bobs but

345
00:11:38,880 --> 00:11:41,680
that kind of suggests you don't get to

346
00:11:40,160 --> 00:11:44,079
learn the bips and bobs in the first few

347
00:11:41,680 --> 00:11:45,839
sessions of a longer form campaign

348
00:11:44,079 --> 00:11:47,279
so the only thing the only benefit you

349
00:11:45,839 --> 00:11:48,640
really get

350
00:11:47,279 --> 00:11:50,959
is

351
00:11:48,640 --> 00:11:54,079
an experience in a given

352
00:11:50,959 --> 00:11:58,000
race and class combo now okay that that

353
00:11:54,079 --> 00:11:59,519
isn't to me anything special because

354
00:11:58,000 --> 00:12:00,720
like to new players specifically we're

355
00:11:59,519 --> 00:12:04,480
talking about you know i've never played

356
00:12:00,720 --> 00:12:06,639
before what am i going to play because a

357
00:12:04,480 --> 00:12:08,560
most dm's myself included will give

358
00:12:06,639 --> 00:12:10,160
people the chance to respec a given

359
00:12:08,560 --> 00:12:11,839
point in a longer form campaign to be

360
00:12:10,160 --> 00:12:14,000
like i know if you're not enjoying it

361
00:12:11,839 --> 00:12:15,839
you've tried it for a bit let's just

362
00:12:14,000 --> 00:12:17,440
wreck on everything and assume you were

363
00:12:15,839 --> 00:12:19,600
a new racing class from the start if you

364
00:12:17,440 --> 00:12:20,959
so choose which obviously sidesteps that

365
00:12:19,600 --> 00:12:22,839
problem quite neatly

366
00:12:20,959 --> 00:12:25,680
otherwise i can't really think of any

367
00:12:22,839 --> 00:12:27,920
benefits you know intrinsic to

368
00:12:25,680 --> 00:12:28,639
let's place five sessions of one other

369
00:12:27,920 --> 00:12:30,639
than

370
00:12:28,639 --> 00:12:34,000
well well i can't really think of any it

371
00:12:30,639 --> 00:12:35,519
just feels like us or that i skipped the

372
00:12:34,000 --> 00:12:37,200
you know the training tutorials at the

373
00:12:35,519 --> 00:12:39,839
beginning of most games

374
00:12:37,200 --> 00:12:41,839
yeah and i was like yeah skip all that

375
00:12:39,839 --> 00:12:43,680
go on hard mode i've got i've played

376
00:12:41,839 --> 00:12:46,160
many games before in my time oh why is

377
00:12:43,680 --> 00:12:47,839
there a massive dragon at my front door

378
00:12:46,160 --> 00:12:49,839
where's my sword how do i do that

379
00:12:47,839 --> 00:12:51,680
daniello

380
00:12:49,839 --> 00:12:53,200
is this an opportunity let's be serious

381
00:12:51,680 --> 00:12:55,040
is this time the opportunity attack when

382
00:12:53,200 --> 00:12:56,399
it this isn't an opportunity attack okay

383
00:12:55,040 --> 00:12:57,440
i'm sorry for bringing it up again

384
00:12:56,399 --> 00:12:58,880
you're trying you're trying to you're

385
00:12:57,440 --> 00:13:00,560
trying to get me to drop my podcast post

386
00:12:58,880 --> 00:13:04,000
persona matthew and it's not gonna work

387
00:13:00,560 --> 00:13:05,920
i'm gonna remain professional

388
00:13:04,000 --> 00:13:07,519
i will not right we'll cancel this whole

389
00:13:05,920 --> 00:13:09,440
session

390
00:13:07,519 --> 00:13:12,160
and you and you you talk as if the

391
00:13:09,440 --> 00:13:14,160
prologue of our campaign wasn't like

392
00:13:12,160 --> 00:13:17,120
six months because it just went on

393
00:13:14,160 --> 00:13:19,200
forever because i'm an idiot

394
00:13:17,120 --> 00:13:20,720
it most certainly wasn't it's down to

395
00:13:19,200 --> 00:13:22,399
your planning

396
00:13:20,720 --> 00:13:23,839
on some of the sessions you were like

397
00:13:22,399 --> 00:13:26,399
just to let you know you didn't touch

398
00:13:23,839 --> 00:13:27,920
any of my notes

399
00:13:26,399 --> 00:13:29,200
this is next this is next week sorted

400
00:13:27,920 --> 00:13:30,959
then because we're gonna be like

401
00:13:29,200 --> 00:13:35,120
daniello's clear path is over there for

402
00:13:30,959 --> 00:13:37,360
us let's go mug someone yeah

403
00:13:35,120 --> 00:13:39,040
yeah i do i do remember the running joke

404
00:13:37,360 --> 00:13:41,760
at the time being like guys this is

405
00:13:39,040 --> 00:13:44,880
still the prologue i wanna can we can we

406
00:13:41,760 --> 00:13:47,360
start the story soon because

407
00:13:44,880 --> 00:13:49,680
we're in tried so hard

408
00:13:47,360 --> 00:13:52,320
the training zone is essentially what

409
00:13:49,680 --> 00:13:54,320
that was but again as a learning point

410
00:13:52,320 --> 00:13:56,480
for me but to finally look around and

411
00:13:54,320 --> 00:13:58,320
answer your question around

412
00:13:56,480 --> 00:13:59,839
a new player i think i have the benefit

413
00:13:58,320 --> 00:14:02,639
of being

414
00:13:59,839 --> 00:14:03,839
what's the word an obsessive personality

415
00:14:02,639 --> 00:14:05,920
for new

416
00:14:03,839 --> 00:14:08,560
hobbies and new things

417
00:14:05,920 --> 00:14:10,160
and that is evidenced by a string of old

418
00:14:08,560 --> 00:14:12,079
hobbies that

419
00:14:10,160 --> 00:14:13,760
have been put by the wayside that i've

420
00:14:12,079 --> 00:14:15,839
invested money in and then done nothing

421
00:14:13,760 --> 00:14:16,880
with so every new shiny thing i get i'm

422
00:14:15,839 --> 00:14:18,480
like oh

423
00:14:16,880 --> 00:14:21,279
i've bought a bicycle i guess i'm a

424
00:14:18,480 --> 00:14:22,560
cyclist now i better get all the gear

425
00:14:21,279 --> 00:14:24,360
to ride

426
00:14:22,560 --> 00:14:26,880
once a year to the pub that i do

427
00:14:24,360 --> 00:14:29,279
[Laughter]

428
00:14:26,880 --> 00:14:30,480
or like let's get a 3d printer oh i

429
00:14:29,279 --> 00:14:32,320
guess i need this and i guess i need

430
00:14:30,480 --> 00:14:33,680
that and i can spend all this time doing

431
00:14:32,320 --> 00:14:37,120
that for it to

432
00:14:33,680 --> 00:14:38,959
kind of slowly fade in into the back so

433
00:14:37,120 --> 00:14:41,680
d d likely hasn't slowly faded into the

434
00:14:38,959 --> 00:14:44,480
back however when i first started

435
00:14:41,680 --> 00:14:47,199
as i am with board games i like to know

436
00:14:44,480 --> 00:14:48,639
the constraints so i would read

437
00:14:47,199 --> 00:14:50,399
you know instead of

438
00:14:48,639 --> 00:14:51,360
of mice and men before going to bed it

439
00:14:50,399 --> 00:14:54,079
would be

440
00:14:51,360 --> 00:14:56,000
the player's handbook uh so i like to

441
00:14:54,079 --> 00:14:58,160
read you know i've read that back

442
00:14:56,000 --> 00:14:59,199
back to back uh at least once because

443
00:14:58,160 --> 00:15:00,160
that's i'm like i need to know

444
00:14:59,199 --> 00:15:02,240
everything

445
00:15:00,160 --> 00:15:03,360
so i can craft the thing i want to craft

446
00:15:02,240 --> 00:15:05,040
and know

447
00:15:03,360 --> 00:15:06,800
what it is i can do so i have the

448
00:15:05,040 --> 00:15:08,639
benefit in this instance of having an

449
00:15:06,800 --> 00:15:10,079
obsessive personality to be like i read

450
00:15:08,639 --> 00:15:10,880
everything

451
00:15:10,079 --> 00:15:12,800
and

452
00:15:10,880 --> 00:15:14,240
the other thing i wanted to mention

453
00:15:12,800 --> 00:15:16,639
and this is behind the screen a little

454
00:15:14,240 --> 00:15:17,920
bit for yourself is

455
00:15:16,639 --> 00:15:19,360
okay let me not try and not leave the

456
00:15:17,920 --> 00:15:20,800
witness too much but i want to talk

457
00:15:19,360 --> 00:15:22,480
about digital

458
00:15:20,800 --> 00:15:27,000
services i'm in trouble

459
00:15:22,480 --> 00:15:27,000
yes i'm afraid um

460
00:15:36,399 --> 00:15:40,800
some people here for me danielle i've

461
00:15:37,920 --> 00:15:42,079
got to go

462
00:15:40,800 --> 00:15:45,199
the intervention is not spending enough

463
00:15:42,079 --> 00:15:46,320
time with your friends that's it

464
00:15:45,199 --> 00:15:47,360
um

465
00:15:46,320 --> 00:15:49,519
was

466
00:15:47,360 --> 00:15:51,600
yeah so digital services so

467
00:15:49,519 --> 00:15:54,320
you know we we

468
00:15:51,600 --> 00:15:55,680
use and i use dnd beyond there are other

469
00:15:54,320 --> 00:15:57,519
components out there and obviously

470
00:15:55,680 --> 00:15:59,120
there's physical versions

471
00:15:57,519 --> 00:16:00,000
but this is a discussion i've had with

472
00:15:59,120 --> 00:16:02,079
other

473
00:16:00,000 --> 00:16:02,880
players in our game

474
00:16:02,079 --> 00:16:04,800
but

475
00:16:02,880 --> 00:16:07,120
how have you felt

476
00:16:04,800 --> 00:16:10,959
from basically doing the majority of

477
00:16:07,120 --> 00:16:13,440
learning and playing through a digital

478
00:16:10,959 --> 00:16:14,720
interface

479
00:16:13,440 --> 00:16:16,160
well it's

480
00:16:14,720 --> 00:16:17,440
fascinating that you bought that up as

481
00:16:16,160 --> 00:16:18,880
one of your questions it's one of the

482
00:16:17,440 --> 00:16:19,839
bits i wanted to cover

483
00:16:18,880 --> 00:16:21,920
so

484
00:16:19,839 --> 00:16:23,759
i think in creating my first character i

485
00:16:21,920 --> 00:16:25,839
did it solely on beyond you know you

486
00:16:23,759 --> 00:16:27,839
gave us all the links and the the other

487
00:16:25,839 --> 00:16:29,040
parts and and all that gum that you gave

488
00:16:27,839 --> 00:16:31,199
us

489
00:16:29,040 --> 00:16:32,720
and i thought you know that's where i

490
00:16:31,199 --> 00:16:34,240
need to be spending all my times on

491
00:16:32,720 --> 00:16:36,079
beyond so

492
00:16:34,240 --> 00:16:38,000
you know first load and beyond up

493
00:16:36,079 --> 00:16:39,759
overwhelming there was you know i didn't

494
00:16:38,000 --> 00:16:40,800
even know the difference between home

495
00:16:39,759 --> 00:16:42,399
brew or

496
00:16:40,800 --> 00:16:44,639
could you like on the first page it says

497
00:16:42,399 --> 00:16:46,399
it's a homebrew character i don't know

498
00:16:44,639 --> 00:16:49,040
why can i add different types of things

499
00:16:46,399 --> 00:16:50,880
surely that's beyond job

500
00:16:49,040 --> 00:16:52,639
but eventually you know stumbled through

501
00:16:50,880 --> 00:16:54,160
it and come to like the standard array

502
00:16:52,639 --> 00:16:56,560
side of things or

503
00:16:54,160 --> 00:16:58,639
point by and things like that

504
00:16:56,560 --> 00:16:59,680
and it did feel like a huge effort to

505
00:16:58,639 --> 00:17:01,839
get to the

506
00:16:59,680 --> 00:17:04,240
my character i kind of wanted just to be

507
00:17:01,839 --> 00:17:06,079
able to like click his arms on click a

508
00:17:04,240 --> 00:17:07,919
sword on and be like boom there he is

509
00:17:06,079 --> 00:17:10,880
and there's me writing his backstory for

510
00:17:07,919 --> 00:17:13,600
his brother that got lost 10 years ago

511
00:17:10,880 --> 00:17:14,799
then i bought the players handbook

512
00:17:13,600 --> 00:17:16,720
and read

513
00:17:14,799 --> 00:17:18,160
foolishly unlike you but cover the cover

514
00:17:16,720 --> 00:17:20,640
i read what was specific to the

515
00:17:18,160 --> 00:17:22,319
character that i had made so it was very

516
00:17:20,640 --> 00:17:23,280
niche and of course i then missed parts

517
00:17:22,319 --> 00:17:25,439
because

518
00:17:23,280 --> 00:17:28,079
i didn't read the melee section on

519
00:17:25,439 --> 00:17:29,520
combat because i was a spellcaster for

520
00:17:28,079 --> 00:17:32,240
everyone listening

521
00:17:29,520 --> 00:17:33,520
i created for my first character a total

522
00:17:32,240 --> 00:17:34,480
sorcerer

523
00:17:33,520 --> 00:17:36,720
um

524
00:17:34,480 --> 00:17:38,000
and thought oh that looks reasonably

525
00:17:36,720 --> 00:17:40,480
reasonably good

526
00:17:38,000 --> 00:17:42,080
you know neglecting standard things like

527
00:17:40,480 --> 00:17:44,160
um totals

528
00:17:42,080 --> 00:17:46,400
uh predominantly good for strength and

529
00:17:44,160 --> 00:17:47,840
wisdom of since found out download not

530
00:17:46,400 --> 00:17:49,440
charisma

531
00:17:47,840 --> 00:17:52,000
also didn't help that i made this

532
00:17:49,440 --> 00:17:54,400
recluse who had been alone for a hundred

533
00:17:52,000 --> 00:17:57,280
years and his main stat was charisma and

534
00:17:54,400 --> 00:17:58,160
he didn't want to talk to anyone

535
00:17:57,280 --> 00:18:00,640
so

536
00:17:58,160 --> 00:18:02,400
those sorts of things aren't guided

537
00:18:00,640 --> 00:18:03,120
through any of the textbooks they give

538
00:18:02,400 --> 00:18:04,480
you

539
00:18:03,120 --> 00:18:06,480
and now that i've got a bit of an

540
00:18:04,480 --> 00:18:08,720
understanding the the player's handbag

541
00:18:06,480 --> 00:18:10,160
and beyond are brilliant because

542
00:18:08,720 --> 00:18:12,080
i know that it's

543
00:18:10,160 --> 00:18:13,520
as it's written that's how it is there

544
00:18:12,080 --> 00:18:15,600
is no ambiguity and if there is it's

545
00:18:13,520 --> 00:18:18,640
deliberate and things like that so but

546
00:18:15,600 --> 00:18:21,120
as a new player coming in i thought

547
00:18:18,640 --> 00:18:23,440
there was a lot going on here

548
00:18:21,120 --> 00:18:25,280
so beyond i think is brilliant and

549
00:18:23,440 --> 00:18:27,200
that's where i point people who ask me

550
00:18:25,280 --> 00:18:28,960
now i'll go go to beyond and use it if

551
00:18:27,200 --> 00:18:31,280
you need any help let me know

552
00:18:28,960 --> 00:18:34,000
the one i'm finding difficulty with is

553
00:18:31,280 --> 00:18:36,320
foundry okay um so we use that for the

554
00:18:34,000 --> 00:18:38,640
map side of it it's brilliant

555
00:18:36,320 --> 00:18:40,720
um i don't like the fact that we've got

556
00:18:38,640 --> 00:18:44,000
two ways of tracking

557
00:18:40,720 --> 00:18:45,840
health and dice rolls and other things

558
00:18:44,000 --> 00:18:47,520
because when it took me so long to get

559
00:18:45,840 --> 00:18:49,440
up to speed with beyond and be

560
00:18:47,520 --> 00:18:50,240
comfortable using it

561
00:18:49,440 --> 00:18:52,320
the

562
00:18:50,240 --> 00:18:54,320
foundry come along super cool for the

563
00:18:52,320 --> 00:18:56,559
maps and the work that goes in there is

564
00:18:54,320 --> 00:18:58,720
is excellent but

565
00:18:56,559 --> 00:19:00,559
the management side of things you know

566
00:18:58,720 --> 00:19:03,120
whilst i'm listening to everyone's roles

567
00:19:00,559 --> 00:19:04,720
uh sorry their turns in in battle i'm

568
00:19:03,120 --> 00:19:06,320
then thinking about what i can do and

569
00:19:04,720 --> 00:19:08,880
then i'm oh someone's taking damage

570
00:19:06,320 --> 00:19:10,400
they've now moved and all the while i'm

571
00:19:08,880 --> 00:19:12,080
thinking where am i next going to do my

572
00:19:10,400 --> 00:19:13,520
dice rolls can download see them can

573
00:19:12,080 --> 00:19:14,880
everyone see them

574
00:19:13,520 --> 00:19:17,360
so i think that does need to be a good

575
00:19:14,880 --> 00:19:18,480
unified platform if there is such a

576
00:19:17,360 --> 00:19:20,960
thing

577
00:19:18,480 --> 00:19:22,320
well i mean there are ways to do it but

578
00:19:20,960 --> 00:19:24,880
i

579
00:19:22,320 --> 00:19:26,320
don't care but i

580
00:19:24,880 --> 00:19:28,400
if none of them wanted character sheets

581
00:19:26,320 --> 00:19:29,760
to be in foundry that would be fine

582
00:19:28,400 --> 00:19:31,360
because it's

583
00:19:29,760 --> 00:19:32,720
i don't need that information you guys

584
00:19:31,360 --> 00:19:33,919
it's your sheets as your sheets like if

585
00:19:32,720 --> 00:19:35,520
you were playing with physical sheets

586
00:19:33,919 --> 00:19:36,960
that would be fine as well the only

587
00:19:35,520 --> 00:19:39,200
thing is we kind of like the other

588
00:19:36,960 --> 00:19:40,720
players like to see your hp because it

589
00:19:39,200 --> 00:19:42,400
cuts out the how are you looking

590
00:19:40,720 --> 00:19:44,480
question which is just kind of awkward

591
00:19:42,400 --> 00:19:46,080
for everybody involved so out of

592
00:19:44,480 --> 00:19:48,240
everything i think having to update your

593
00:19:46,080 --> 00:19:50,240
hp in two places is probably the best

594
00:19:48,240 --> 00:19:52,480
we're gonna get away with um yeah but

595
00:19:50,240 --> 00:19:54,160
bear in mind when i'm running six

596
00:19:52,480 --> 00:19:55,039
monsters like i was the other night

597
00:19:54,160 --> 00:19:56,720
that's

598
00:19:55,039 --> 00:19:58,559
six tabs on beyond and the one on

599
00:19:56,720 --> 00:20:00,320
foundry and shifting between those two

600
00:19:58,559 --> 00:20:03,520
to manage abilities and spells and all

601
00:20:00,320 --> 00:20:05,039
that kind of stuff so just shut up stop

602
00:20:03,520 --> 00:20:07,760
stop crying

603
00:20:05,039 --> 00:20:08,960
ian sat there chuckling like this is why

604
00:20:07,760 --> 00:20:12,400
i don't use it

605
00:20:08,960 --> 00:20:14,320
um but interestingly but as uh with my

606
00:20:12,400 --> 00:20:15,679
newest character so i've introduced

607
00:20:14,320 --> 00:20:16,480
theron which is

608
00:20:15,679 --> 00:20:18,720
uh

609
00:20:16,480 --> 00:20:21,840
my total sorcerer who unfortunately met

610
00:20:18,720 --> 00:20:24,640
his demise a couple of sessions ago

611
00:20:21,840 --> 00:20:27,039
uh my latest character is a dragonborn

612
00:20:24,640 --> 00:20:27,919
uh paladin who although i've created him

613
00:20:27,039 --> 00:20:29,440
on

614
00:20:27,919 --> 00:20:30,880
beyond i've actually printed his sheets

615
00:20:29,440 --> 00:20:32,559
off and i find that much easier i use

616
00:20:30,880 --> 00:20:34,640
that in our last session because all the

617
00:20:32,559 --> 00:20:36,799
information is there what i've found

618
00:20:34,640 --> 00:20:38,880
that i've not panicked that's just too

619
00:20:36,799 --> 00:20:41,679
much of a strong word but when it comes

620
00:20:38,880 --> 00:20:42,960
to my turn i'm flicking between tabs all

621
00:20:41,679 --> 00:20:44,720
the time and i'm trying to do stuff and

622
00:20:42,960 --> 00:20:46,320
then i've kind of missed you going oh

623
00:20:44,720 --> 00:20:48,799
matt you're up next i'm like okay and

624
00:20:46,320 --> 00:20:50,559
i'm juggling whereas with the sheets you

625
00:20:48,799 --> 00:20:52,159
just stand master over the top of them

626
00:20:50,559 --> 00:20:54,480
and go okay i might make a little mark

627
00:20:52,159 --> 00:20:56,960
here and there if i want to do this move

628
00:20:54,480 --> 00:20:59,600
but it is a lot easier to use

629
00:20:56,960 --> 00:21:01,760
pen and paper sometimes that i love that

630
00:20:59,600 --> 00:21:03,360
you think that because the reason why i

631
00:21:01,760 --> 00:21:05,280
asked that question

632
00:21:03,360 --> 00:21:06,799
is because

633
00:21:05,280 --> 00:21:08,720
a difference between your experience and

634
00:21:06,799 --> 00:21:11,039
my experience as a new player and for

635
00:21:08,720 --> 00:21:13,360
everybody listening i started as a

636
00:21:11,039 --> 00:21:14,840
player my first four or five sessions

637
00:21:13,360 --> 00:21:18,080
where as a player with a friend

638
00:21:14,840 --> 00:21:19,919
dming uh a was built completely level

639
00:21:18,080 --> 00:21:22,080
three rogue human rogue

640
00:21:19,919 --> 00:21:24,559
from the ground up with pen and paper

641
00:21:22,080 --> 00:21:25,760
character sheet no digital help at all

642
00:21:24,559 --> 00:21:27,840
and that was

643
00:21:25,760 --> 00:21:29,280
a laborious effort

644
00:21:27,840 --> 00:21:30,720
however

645
00:21:29,280 --> 00:21:32,000
it teaches you

646
00:21:30,720 --> 00:21:35,200
a lot

647
00:21:32,000 --> 00:21:36,720
of how everything fits together

648
00:21:35,200 --> 00:21:38,320
because

649
00:21:36,720 --> 00:21:40,559
beyond other digital services do the

650
00:21:38,320 --> 00:21:42,159
maths behind the scenes which is great

651
00:21:40,559 --> 00:21:44,080
and a time saver

652
00:21:42,159 --> 00:21:46,000
what you pay is kind of an understanding

653
00:21:44,080 --> 00:21:47,840
of how that works together for a new for

654
00:21:46,000 --> 00:21:50,080
a new player so like if i asked you

655
00:21:47,840 --> 00:21:51,840
maybe now you'd know but maybe a year

656
00:21:50,080 --> 00:21:54,400
ago if i said where's your plus six to

657
00:21:51,840 --> 00:21:55,280
hit with your scorching ray come from

658
00:21:54,400 --> 00:21:57,120
yeah

659
00:21:55,280 --> 00:21:59,120
you probably would have been like i i

660
00:21:57,120 --> 00:22:01,280
don't know it's just plastics beyond

661
00:21:59,120 --> 00:22:01,280
yeah

662
00:22:03,520 --> 00:22:06,799
whereas once you when you have you have

663
00:22:05,520 --> 00:22:08,640
to work out when you're making the

664
00:22:06,799 --> 00:22:10,480
character sheet from scratch manually

665
00:22:08,640 --> 00:22:12,559
you have to work out that plus six and

666
00:22:10,480 --> 00:22:15,280
what's it's a function of two other

667
00:22:12,559 --> 00:22:17,520
modifiers yeah they get added together

668
00:22:15,280 --> 00:22:18,960
um so building it like that

669
00:22:17,520 --> 00:22:20,880
is

670
00:22:18,960 --> 00:22:21,760
very good of a learning experience so

671
00:22:20,880 --> 00:22:22,880
now you've just told me that you're

672
00:22:21,760 --> 00:22:24,400
using a paper sheet what i would

673
00:22:22,880 --> 00:22:26,720
actually recommend to you

674
00:22:24,400 --> 00:22:28,960
is you should try and build

675
00:22:26,720 --> 00:22:31,280
your new paladin dragonborn

676
00:22:28,960 --> 00:22:32,640
from scratch to try and match what

677
00:22:31,280 --> 00:22:34,159
beyond has given you

678
00:22:32,640 --> 00:22:35,919
to see if there's any difficulties and

679
00:22:34,159 --> 00:22:37,200
see where you've made any mistakes

680
00:22:35,919 --> 00:22:39,360
because even when you said where you get

681
00:22:37,200 --> 00:22:40,400
that plus six from i'm like yep

682
00:22:39,360 --> 00:22:41,200
excellent

683
00:22:40,400 --> 00:22:42,080
um

684
00:22:41,200 --> 00:22:44,000
because

685
00:22:42,080 --> 00:22:46,000
you know well i hope you saw from the

686
00:22:44,000 --> 00:22:46,960
backstory that i wrote separately to

687
00:22:46,000 --> 00:22:49,360
beyond

688
00:22:46,960 --> 00:22:51,120
i know my character inside out from an

689
00:22:49,360 --> 00:22:52,960
rp point of view

690
00:22:51,120 --> 00:22:54,480
and i've done a lot of reading to try

691
00:22:52,960 --> 00:22:55,360
and understand him from a stat point of

692
00:22:54,480 --> 00:22:57,039
view and

693
00:22:55,360 --> 00:22:58,159
that side of things but yeah no i think

694
00:22:57,039 --> 00:22:59,600
that's going to be a good little

695
00:22:58,159 --> 00:23:02,080
exercise to do to

696
00:22:59,600 --> 00:23:03,760
try i'm going to get it way wrong but

697
00:23:02,080 --> 00:23:06,080
yeah and you will like you will do it's

698
00:23:03,760 --> 00:23:07,919
so so easy to get wrong but that's

699
00:23:06,080 --> 00:23:10,000
obviously as you we were talking about

700
00:23:07,919 --> 00:23:11,520
earlier on like it's easy to learning

701
00:23:10,000 --> 00:23:13,760
from mistakes is

702
00:23:11,520 --> 00:23:16,559
is one-on-one of growing as a human

703
00:23:13,760 --> 00:23:18,159
being so like that's i mean i made a

704
00:23:16,559 --> 00:23:19,440
shitload of mistakes making my rogue and

705
00:23:18,159 --> 00:23:21,039
it wasn't until like two sessions in i

706
00:23:19,440 --> 00:23:22,960
was like oh okay

707
00:23:21,039 --> 00:23:24,400
carry the one but if i'd done that and

708
00:23:22,960 --> 00:23:27,280
then i get that and then so it's

709
00:23:24,400 --> 00:23:29,120
actually 4d6 right okay now i know going

710
00:23:27,280 --> 00:23:31,039
forward which is why when you ask me

711
00:23:29,120 --> 00:23:32,640
when we're playing

712
00:23:31,039 --> 00:23:33,600
doesn't you know doesn't reuter the

713
00:23:32,640 --> 00:23:34,799
rogue in the campaign doesn't he get

714
00:23:33,600 --> 00:23:37,280
sneak attack and i'm like yeah that's

715
00:23:34,799 --> 00:23:39,200
probably 5d6 and it's because i've had

716
00:23:37,280 --> 00:23:41,039
to build a rogue in the past and i've

717
00:23:39,200 --> 00:23:42,960
had to know i kind of broadly know the

718
00:23:41,039 --> 00:23:44,880
scaling because i've had to work out

719
00:23:42,960 --> 00:23:46,640
what the scaling is because

720
00:23:44,880 --> 00:23:48,880
because

721
00:23:46,640 --> 00:23:52,640
you bet like it gets rid of even at

722
00:23:48,880 --> 00:23:53,840
level three it's it takes a long time to

723
00:23:52,640 --> 00:23:55,200
make sure that

724
00:23:53,840 --> 00:23:56,640
if that's the tick there then you get

725
00:23:55,200 --> 00:23:58,640
that and that's for a simple character

726
00:23:56,640 --> 00:24:00,159
as soon as you get like barred jack of

727
00:23:58,640 --> 00:24:02,400
all trades which is half your

728
00:24:00,159 --> 00:24:05,679
proficiency bonus to all your abilities

729
00:24:02,400 --> 00:24:07,200
yeah then you're like okay and then when

730
00:24:05,679 --> 00:24:08,400
you level up and your proficiency bonus

731
00:24:07,200 --> 00:24:10,480
changes you have to change all your

732
00:24:08,400 --> 00:24:13,200
ability modifiers yeah

733
00:24:10,480 --> 00:24:15,120
that's so i would recommend

734
00:24:13,200 --> 00:24:17,279
that exercise i just said but also maybe

735
00:24:15,120 --> 00:24:19,360
for your first character do

736
00:24:17,279 --> 00:24:20,320
doing it manually because it just taught

737
00:24:19,360 --> 00:24:23,520
me

738
00:24:20,320 --> 00:24:24,480
so much that now now i use beyond

739
00:24:23,520 --> 00:24:26,480
for

740
00:24:24,480 --> 00:24:28,000
the convenience store the time saving

741
00:24:26,480 --> 00:24:29,840
yeah the elements of it and having the

742
00:24:28,000 --> 00:24:32,159
spells as tooltips and not having to be

743
00:24:29,840 --> 00:24:33,520
like to manually work out the maths i

744
00:24:32,159 --> 00:24:34,720
think that's definitely what's missing

745
00:24:33,520 --> 00:24:37,600
in my

746
00:24:34,720 --> 00:24:39,200
to to solidify my confidence in the game

747
00:24:37,600 --> 00:24:41,360
because at the moment what i'm doing is

748
00:24:39,200 --> 00:24:43,679
i'm over compensating by

749
00:24:41,360 --> 00:24:45,279
writing down you know planned moves and

750
00:24:43,679 --> 00:24:48,320
like i can do this i can do that but

751
00:24:45,279 --> 00:24:50,400
even when i do those sorts of things

752
00:24:48,320 --> 00:24:52,640
i'm missing diverse certain dice rolls

753
00:24:50,400 --> 00:24:54,960
because like this week when i wrote down

754
00:24:52,640 --> 00:24:56,080
a list of bits i missed the extra 2d6

755
00:24:54,960 --> 00:24:58,080
because my

756
00:24:56,080 --> 00:25:00,799
flame sword was on fire

757
00:24:58,080 --> 00:25:01,679
i missed that whereas like you just said

758
00:25:00,799 --> 00:25:02,799
when you're going through and you're

759
00:25:01,679 --> 00:25:04,400
writing it down you're building those

760
00:25:02,799 --> 00:25:06,159
stats you won't miss it once you've

761
00:25:04,400 --> 00:25:08,159
added it a hundred times together loads

762
00:25:06,159 --> 00:25:10,559
of different places well it's even it's

763
00:25:08,159 --> 00:25:12,400
it's even even the cla like you boil it

764
00:25:10,559 --> 00:25:14,720
all down and it's that classic learning

765
00:25:12,400 --> 00:25:16,880
rhetoric of when you write something

766
00:25:14,720 --> 00:25:19,440
down you remember it better yeah so just

767
00:25:16,880 --> 00:25:22,960
purely the fact of writing plus one

768
00:25:19,440 --> 00:25:24,320
flame tongue long sword equals plus 2d6

769
00:25:22,960 --> 00:25:25,840
on my character you're just doing that

770
00:25:24,320 --> 00:25:27,440
once and even if you don't play for

771
00:25:25,840 --> 00:25:28,640
another two weeks you will be more

772
00:25:27,440 --> 00:25:30,960
likely to remember that than just

773
00:25:28,640 --> 00:25:33,200
clicking oh that blue sword looks good

774
00:25:30,960 --> 00:25:34,559
and then you've forgotten about it

775
00:25:33,200 --> 00:25:36,159
it's the number of times i've forgotten

776
00:25:34,559 --> 00:25:36,960
about all the extra bits that come along

777
00:25:36,159 --> 00:25:38,880
with

778
00:25:36,960 --> 00:25:41,200
you know dnd not just you know your

779
00:25:38,880 --> 00:25:42,159
immediate swords and spells and things

780
00:25:41,200 --> 00:25:43,919
but the fact that you got like a

781
00:25:42,159 --> 00:25:46,000
traveler's pack or you know adventurous

782
00:25:43,919 --> 00:25:47,120
pack and things i always forget about

783
00:25:46,000 --> 00:25:49,200
those things because they were just

784
00:25:47,120 --> 00:25:50,880
which one do you want uh both travellers

785
00:25:49,200 --> 00:25:53,919
back that'll do yeah exactly all those

786
00:25:50,880 --> 00:25:55,600
little bits they're lost on me um yeah

787
00:25:53,919 --> 00:25:58,080
try not to this time i've got a little

788
00:25:55,600 --> 00:25:59,760
spicy thing that i added in to try and

789
00:25:58,080 --> 00:26:00,960
build in some better communication with

790
00:25:59,760 --> 00:26:02,320
the group which

791
00:26:00,960 --> 00:26:04,559
i hope will work

792
00:26:02,320 --> 00:26:06,799
[Laughter]

793
00:26:04,559 --> 00:26:08,720
yeah well and again like when you're

794
00:26:06,799 --> 00:26:11,039
another not to

795
00:26:08,720 --> 00:26:13,679
you know be a dead horse but um a

796
00:26:11,039 --> 00:26:16,400
simultaneous drawback and

797
00:26:13,679 --> 00:26:18,080
advantage of the phb

798
00:26:16,400 --> 00:26:20,159
is that everything is laid out all over

799
00:26:18,080 --> 00:26:22,640
the shop like literally

800
00:26:20,159 --> 00:26:25,120
you need page five you need page 25 you

801
00:26:22,640 --> 00:26:27,440
need page 105 and 205 to build a

802
00:26:25,120 --> 00:26:28,880
character so you're like the whole book

803
00:26:27,440 --> 00:26:30,240
is necessary to build a character which

804
00:26:28,880 --> 00:26:32,400
is kind of

805
00:26:30,240 --> 00:26:34,480
shitty design but conversely that

806
00:26:32,400 --> 00:26:35,760
actually helps because you're flicking

807
00:26:34,480 --> 00:26:37,600
backwards and forwards so much you're

808
00:26:35,760 --> 00:26:40,559
kind of getting you get a feel for it so

809
00:26:37,600 --> 00:26:42,400
like that adventure pack stuff is not

810
00:26:40,559 --> 00:26:43,919
kind of not really near character well

811
00:26:42,400 --> 00:26:45,919
you might be making

812
00:26:43,919 --> 00:26:47,520
like a barbarian

813
00:26:45,919 --> 00:26:48,799
gnome or something but then the

814
00:26:47,520 --> 00:26:51,200
equipment stuff isn't till right at the

815
00:26:48,799 --> 00:26:53,760
end of the races and classes that's like

816
00:26:51,200 --> 00:26:55,120
way down 50 pages 50 pages later so

817
00:26:53,760 --> 00:26:57,120
you're going backwards and forwards oh

818
00:26:55,120 --> 00:26:59,279
there's the one paragraph on adventurous

819
00:26:57,120 --> 00:27:00,080
pack but what else is on this page yeah

820
00:26:59,279 --> 00:27:02,880
there's

821
00:27:00,080 --> 00:27:04,320
oh how do i get oh okay i see i can get

822
00:27:02,880 --> 00:27:06,240
these other things here maybe at some

823
00:27:04,320 --> 00:27:07,919
other time and then as i flick through

824
00:27:06,240 --> 00:27:10,640
i'm flicking through when i land on the

825
00:27:07,919 --> 00:27:13,679
elf page and i go oh maybe elf is

826
00:27:10,640 --> 00:27:15,039
better for me so i yeah just the sake of

827
00:27:13,679 --> 00:27:16,640
having to flip through that book a

828
00:27:15,039 --> 00:27:19,600
hundred times which is why the spine is

829
00:27:16,640 --> 00:27:21,120
completely [ __ ] on my book because

830
00:27:19,600 --> 00:27:23,600
it just gives out at some point because

831
00:27:21,120 --> 00:27:26,640
like yeah you just you're going from the

832
00:27:23,600 --> 00:27:27,840
extremes all the time i started huffing

833
00:27:26,640 --> 00:27:29,760
the amount of times i was flipping

834
00:27:27,840 --> 00:27:32,720
between for those wanting to do paladin

835
00:27:29,760 --> 00:27:34,480
dragonborns 32 and 82 of your pages the

836
00:27:32,720 --> 00:27:36,480
amount of time i was like man and now i

837
00:27:34,480 --> 00:27:37,200
need to flick off

838
00:27:36,480 --> 00:27:39,120
but

839
00:27:37,200 --> 00:27:40,799
even that exercise got

840
00:27:39,120 --> 00:27:43,200
got me a better understanding of how i'm

841
00:27:40,799 --> 00:27:44,960
building my character compared to the

842
00:27:43,200 --> 00:27:49,200
beyond side of things

843
00:27:44,960 --> 00:27:51,520
mm-hmm yeah yeah i i and i remember my

844
00:27:49,200 --> 00:27:53,279
elf rogue and i'd love to to pick him up

845
00:27:51,520 --> 00:27:56,640
again at some point maximum

846
00:27:53,279 --> 00:27:59,120
maximilian de la rouge rouge being a

847
00:27:56,640 --> 00:28:00,880
joke on the common misspelling of rogue

848
00:27:59,120 --> 00:28:03,279
of course

849
00:28:00,880 --> 00:28:05,279
listen up everyone these are these are

850
00:28:03,279 --> 00:28:06,799
little nuggets that i get in every one

851
00:28:05,279 --> 00:28:07,919
of my campaigns

852
00:28:06,799 --> 00:28:09,600
or every one of the sessions of the

853
00:28:07,919 --> 00:28:11,120
campaign sorry you've got to be on your

854
00:28:09,600 --> 00:28:12,720
toes constantly because that little just

855
00:28:11,120 --> 00:28:14,480
start chuckling you're like i've missed

856
00:28:12,720 --> 00:28:17,120
something here it's is it the way it's

857
00:28:14,480 --> 00:28:17,120
name spell

858
00:28:17,360 --> 00:28:22,130
[Laughter]

859
00:28:19,090 --> 00:28:22,130
[Music]

860
00:28:28,180 --> 00:28:36,080
[Music]

861
00:28:34,240 --> 00:28:38,240
you know i remember him the sheets i

862
00:28:36,080 --> 00:28:39,679
think of long gone um

863
00:28:38,240 --> 00:28:42,320
because that campaign that game ended

864
00:28:39,679 --> 00:28:45,039
and whatnot but um i would love to to

865
00:28:42,320 --> 00:28:47,039
pick him up at some point so yeah that

866
00:28:45,039 --> 00:28:49,440
was one thing i wanted to mention is

867
00:28:47,039 --> 00:28:51,520
that that experience of of dnd if you

868
00:28:49,440 --> 00:28:52,480
ask ian who was on the experience

869
00:28:51,520 --> 00:28:54,240
episode

870
00:28:52,480 --> 00:28:55,279
that yeah he will agree and that like

871
00:28:54,240 --> 00:28:57,360
you do

872
00:28:55,279 --> 00:28:58,799
you just lose context doing it in

873
00:28:57,360 --> 00:29:00,720
isolation because there they are as you

874
00:28:58,799 --> 00:29:03,279
said like binary choices like explorers

875
00:29:00,720 --> 00:29:04,720
pack or priests kit okay

876
00:29:03,279 --> 00:29:07,440
i don't want to be a lame priest so i

877
00:29:04,720 --> 00:29:09,760
guess i'll be an explorer click but you

878
00:29:07,440 --> 00:29:11,279
get different stuff that although it

879
00:29:09,760 --> 00:29:12,399
doesn't give you a plus one anywhere it

880
00:29:11,279 --> 00:29:14,159
does

881
00:29:12,399 --> 00:29:15,840
could drastically change the outcome

882
00:29:14,159 --> 00:29:17,600
yeah yeah it could change the outcome of

883
00:29:15,840 --> 00:29:20,080
an encounter because some not all packs

884
00:29:17,600 --> 00:29:21,520
have crowbars in for example or pythons

885
00:29:20,080 --> 00:29:23,039
for climbing so

886
00:29:21,520 --> 00:29:26,360
i've gotta read the players handbooks

887
00:29:23,039 --> 00:29:26,360
you get a crowbar

888
00:29:26,880 --> 00:29:29,279
yes

889
00:29:27,840 --> 00:29:30,799
it's all this stuff my character's just

890
00:29:29,279 --> 00:29:32,399
lugging around with him the whole time

891
00:29:30,799 --> 00:29:35,520
it's just like i don't ever bother with

892
00:29:32,399 --> 00:29:36,880
any of that i've got spells

893
00:29:35,520 --> 00:29:37,600
that's why bag of holdings are great

894
00:29:36,880 --> 00:29:39,039
because

895
00:29:37,600 --> 00:29:40,640
ah spung everything in there and forget

896
00:29:39,039 --> 00:29:42,480
about it probably my favorite thing to

897
00:29:40,640 --> 00:29:45,760
come out of dd so far is how do i create

898
00:29:42,480 --> 00:29:45,760
a real world version of that

899
00:29:46,000 --> 00:29:49,039
i think it's called the loft because

900
00:29:47,360 --> 00:29:51,840
that's where all my [ __ ] goes up and

901
00:29:49,039 --> 00:29:53,440
disappears and i never touch again there

902
00:29:51,840 --> 00:29:55,679
but i was putting bodies in there down

903
00:29:53,440 --> 00:29:57,440
low nobody's in the loft

904
00:29:55,679 --> 00:29:59,310
no but that works for bagger holding too

905
00:29:57,440 --> 00:30:02,619
so yeah

906
00:29:59,310 --> 00:30:02,619
[Music]

907
00:30:05,180 --> 00:30:11,919
[Music]

908
00:30:09,200 --> 00:30:14,399
so i wanted to ask then as

909
00:30:11,919 --> 00:30:17,200
a completely virgin player from not only

910
00:30:14,399 --> 00:30:19,919
d d but also to tt rpgs in general and

911
00:30:17,200 --> 00:30:20,960
yes uh you you said earlier on you are

912
00:30:19,919 --> 00:30:24,000
familiar with

913
00:30:20,960 --> 00:30:25,840
the rpgs the video game sure bgrpg's

914
00:30:24,000 --> 00:30:28,159
like final fantasy or not but apart from

915
00:30:25,840 --> 00:30:30,799
that which i think is self evident the

916
00:30:28,159 --> 00:30:32,960
difference between the two what

917
00:30:30,799 --> 00:30:34,840
have you enjoyed most

918
00:30:32,960 --> 00:30:37,360
and

919
00:30:34,840 --> 00:30:38,720
what have you know what have you learned

920
00:30:37,360 --> 00:30:41,039
and do you have any other tips for any

921
00:30:38,720 --> 00:30:43,039
new players now i'm

922
00:30:41,039 --> 00:30:44,799
for better or for worse

923
00:30:43,039 --> 00:30:46,720
jaded by

924
00:30:44,799 --> 00:30:48,880
dming for

925
00:30:46,720 --> 00:30:50,559
three years give or take

926
00:30:48,880 --> 00:30:52,720
and obviously that changes my

927
00:30:50,559 --> 00:30:53,840
perspective on things and you know i

928
00:30:52,720 --> 00:30:55,679
played

929
00:30:53,840 --> 00:30:57,919
other games before this one and loads of

930
00:30:55,679 --> 00:30:59,760
ball games of like rpg elements and blah

931
00:30:57,919 --> 00:31:00,720
blah blah blah blah but for you i want

932
00:30:59,760 --> 00:31:02,880
to get that

933
00:31:00,720 --> 00:31:06,080
really distilled

934
00:31:02,880 --> 00:31:07,120
thoughts and experiences from oof

935
00:31:06,080 --> 00:31:11,200
deep

936
00:31:07,120 --> 00:31:13,679
welcome to the meaningful hour um

937
00:31:11,200 --> 00:31:16,640
it it has been massive um i think the

938
00:31:13,679 --> 00:31:17,519
biggest thing that i've taken from dnd

939
00:31:16,640 --> 00:31:19,279
is

940
00:31:17,519 --> 00:31:21,919
to stop taking everything so seriously

941
00:31:19,279 --> 00:31:23,600
in life you know when we when i started

942
00:31:21,919 --> 00:31:25,919
playing i was just taking on some

943
00:31:23,600 --> 00:31:27,760
massive projects you know working with

944
00:31:25,919 --> 00:31:30,799
the likes of the mod and things like

945
00:31:27,760 --> 00:31:33,120
that and in those meetings i was acting

946
00:31:30,799 --> 00:31:35,120
i wasn't mad at all i was this you know

947
00:31:33,120 --> 00:31:37,679
i was trying to be oh look at me i can

948
00:31:35,120 --> 00:31:39,440
say skills matrix 100 times in a meeting

949
00:31:37,679 --> 00:31:41,679
and pretend to know what it's about

950
00:31:39,440 --> 00:31:42,960
but then i felt out of place sitting

951
00:31:41,679 --> 00:31:45,039
down with friends

952
00:31:42,960 --> 00:31:47,360
trying to have a laugh and tell a story

953
00:31:45,039 --> 00:31:50,640
because that's what i try to tell people

954
00:31:47,360 --> 00:31:52,159
when they say oh you play dnd i go yeah

955
00:31:50,640 --> 00:31:54,000
actually can you remember when you last

956
00:31:52,159 --> 00:31:55,600
had fun doing

957
00:31:54,000 --> 00:31:57,200
make belief with your friends when you

958
00:31:55,600 --> 00:31:59,200
were little and you didn't have a care

959
00:31:57,200 --> 00:32:00,720
in the world it brings those bits back

960
00:31:59,200 --> 00:32:02,880
from your childhood

961
00:32:00,720 --> 00:32:05,279
and i recommend it wholeheartedly to

962
00:32:02,880 --> 00:32:08,720
everyone to drop the disguise of being

963
00:32:05,279 --> 00:32:10,799
an adult it's boring and put on

964
00:32:08,720 --> 00:32:13,600
a fat turtle suit

965
00:32:10,799 --> 00:32:14,799
and pretend to hurt people with magic

966
00:32:13,600 --> 00:32:17,200
it's

967
00:32:14,799 --> 00:32:19,200
just the best feeling in the world um

968
00:32:17,200 --> 00:32:21,919
and what i didn't realize would come

969
00:32:19,200 --> 00:32:24,080
from it is this attachment to people and

970
00:32:21,919 --> 00:32:26,159
characters that you you build into the

971
00:32:24,080 --> 00:32:28,720
story because i thought this is danalo's

972
00:32:26,159 --> 00:32:30,960
thing and we're gonna do it for him or

973
00:32:28,720 --> 00:32:32,159
along with him but then all of a sudden

974
00:32:30,960 --> 00:32:34,960
i had this character that i was like oh

975
00:32:32,159 --> 00:32:36,640
this is mine and i can do pretty much

976
00:32:34,960 --> 00:32:38,880
anything i'd like with him

977
00:32:36,640 --> 00:32:40,399
which went down the route that i kind of

978
00:32:38,880 --> 00:32:42,880
didn't want it to

979
00:32:40,399 --> 00:32:45,600
eventually um i think you've touched on

980
00:32:42,880 --> 00:32:48,880
it before my character

981
00:32:45,600 --> 00:32:51,919
was involved in an incident that

982
00:32:48,880 --> 00:32:53,519
caused another player's character to no

983
00:32:51,919 --> 00:32:54,399
longer play

984
00:32:53,519 --> 00:32:55,840
you know

985
00:32:54,399 --> 00:32:58,320
are you in a project management meeting

986
00:32:55,840 --> 00:33:00,159
to the mod again is that the political

987
00:32:58,320 --> 00:33:02,880
answers you're giving me right now

988
00:33:00,159 --> 00:33:05,360
ian i'm sorry all right on record i'm

989
00:33:02,880 --> 00:33:06,240
sorry i killed grishnack okay

990
00:33:05,360 --> 00:33:07,600
um

991
00:33:06,240 --> 00:33:09,840
it didn't happen the way that i wanted

992
00:33:07,600 --> 00:33:12,000
it to i was trying to do something and

993
00:33:09,840 --> 00:33:13,200
it didn't work but i was torn between

994
00:33:12,000 --> 00:33:14,960
the whole

995
00:33:13,200 --> 00:33:16,799
this is what my character would do kind

996
00:33:14,960 --> 00:33:18,960
of vibe and

997
00:33:16,799 --> 00:33:20,000
i want to do something with my character

998
00:33:18,960 --> 00:33:22,720
because

999
00:33:20,000 --> 00:33:24,799
hey it's we're not sitting down to play

1000
00:33:22,720 --> 00:33:26,960
the most optimal game and if we were

1001
00:33:24,799 --> 00:33:28,320
that would drive everyone nuts

1002
00:33:26,960 --> 00:33:29,760
so yeah being

1003
00:33:28,320 --> 00:33:30,799
you know you can almost be yourself

1004
00:33:29,760 --> 00:33:32,720
through the lives of these other

1005
00:33:30,799 --> 00:33:34,799
characters and stuff and it's

1006
00:33:32,720 --> 00:33:36,240
it just brought home personally i was

1007
00:33:34,799 --> 00:33:37,360
going through a lot of rough stuff

1008
00:33:36,240 --> 00:33:40,799
mentally

1009
00:33:37,360 --> 00:33:42,159
and dnd was a an excellent way out so

1010
00:33:40,799 --> 00:33:43,440
that's probably the biggest thing i've

1011
00:33:42,159 --> 00:33:45,519
taken from it

1012
00:33:43,440 --> 00:33:48,399
hmm oh that's that that's what you've

1013
00:33:45,519 --> 00:33:49,840
just described is very

1014
00:33:48,399 --> 00:33:51,519
nice to hear

1015
00:33:49,840 --> 00:33:53,679
from a as i said that quote-unquote

1016
00:33:51,519 --> 00:33:55,600
jaded dm's perspective it's sometimes

1017
00:33:53,679 --> 00:33:58,080
hard to see the wood for the trees and

1018
00:33:55,600 --> 00:33:58,960
it's very much like just a churn i need

1019
00:33:58,080 --> 00:34:00,720
to

1020
00:33:58,960 --> 00:34:02,240
you know you know hand to mouth like i'm

1021
00:34:00,720 --> 00:34:04,399
making stuff i'm making stuff and making

1022
00:34:02,240 --> 00:34:07,519
stuff that i need to consume and it's

1023
00:34:04,399 --> 00:34:09,280
it's very easy just to lose sight

1024
00:34:07,519 --> 00:34:12,800
of the real reason that you know people

1025
00:34:09,280 --> 00:34:15,679
are playing and it is that just like i

1026
00:34:12,800 --> 00:34:18,159
want to forget about life for four hours

1027
00:34:15,679 --> 00:34:20,000
and have pizza and

1028
00:34:18,159 --> 00:34:22,320
you know be disconnected and just turn

1029
00:34:20,000 --> 00:34:24,240
my brain off and and have fun

1030
00:34:22,320 --> 00:34:25,679
which must be nice because i'm sitting

1031
00:34:24,240 --> 00:34:29,339
there running at like 200 percent

1032
00:34:25,679 --> 00:34:29,339
[Laughter]

1033
00:34:29,599 --> 00:34:33,599
yeah

1034
00:34:30,480 --> 00:34:35,679
i'll be honest i do miss the social so

1035
00:34:33,599 --> 00:34:39,119
as you mentioned when we did it all

1036
00:34:35,679 --> 00:34:40,800
together that was the absolute peak of

1037
00:34:39,119 --> 00:34:42,560
the enjoyment of it all

1038
00:34:40,800 --> 00:34:44,000
we were all getting around that massive

1039
00:34:42,560 --> 00:34:46,000
table we were fortunate enough that one

1040
00:34:44,000 --> 00:34:48,720
of our friends was hosting it in his in

1041
00:34:46,000 --> 00:34:50,720
his uh conservatory had a huge

1042
00:34:48,720 --> 00:34:51,919
eight-seater ten-seater table so we

1043
00:34:50,720 --> 00:34:55,119
could all just get around it with

1044
00:34:51,919 --> 00:34:57,359
laptops and dice and sheets everywhere

1045
00:34:55,119 --> 00:34:59,920
and as a new player i was like this is

1046
00:34:57,359 --> 00:35:02,800
exactly how i imagined it except we're

1047
00:34:59,920 --> 00:35:05,119
upstairs not in a basement and

1048
00:35:02,800 --> 00:35:07,680
i was playing d d whereas over the zoom

1049
00:35:05,119 --> 00:35:10,000
side of it although we do very well now

1050
00:35:07,680 --> 00:35:12,720
we're into the swing of it at first it

1051
00:35:10,000 --> 00:35:15,200
felt very isolated and

1052
00:35:12,720 --> 00:35:16,640
he had to overcome a new a whole new

1053
00:35:15,200 --> 00:35:18,960
part of feeling silly because i was

1054
00:35:16,640 --> 00:35:21,520
playing in front of my family now but

1055
00:35:18,960 --> 00:35:23,359
daddy's gonna go do a terrible voice of

1056
00:35:21,520 --> 00:35:24,960
a turtle hello

1057
00:35:23,359 --> 00:35:26,960
and they're like why are you

1058
00:35:24,960 --> 00:35:28,400
talking like that dad please go to bed

1059
00:35:26,960 --> 00:35:30,480
daddy's doing some very serious stuff

1060
00:35:28,400 --> 00:35:32,640
with his friends

1061
00:35:30,480 --> 00:35:32,990
i've got the mod on the line uh do you

1062
00:35:32,640 --> 00:35:36,079
mind

1063
00:35:32,990 --> 00:35:38,640
[Laughter]

1064
00:35:36,079 --> 00:35:40,320
uh magic missile uh again please down

1065
00:35:38,640 --> 00:35:42,880
the line yes we're hearing a magic

1066
00:35:40,320 --> 00:35:44,320
missile strike is out there

1067
00:35:42,880 --> 00:35:46,400
we've gone wait we've swung way too into

1068
00:35:44,320 --> 00:35:49,599
politics like within the

1069
00:35:46,400 --> 00:35:51,280
blink quick quick i bought

1070
00:35:49,599 --> 00:35:53,920
i literally bit my tongue to not say

1071
00:35:51,280 --> 00:35:55,280
anything further the second you said

1072
00:35:53,920 --> 00:35:56,960
do you know what actually let's screw

1073
00:35:55,280 --> 00:35:57,900
the whole whole d d bit i'm actually

1074
00:35:56,960 --> 00:36:00,720
quite annoyed at the minute

1075
00:35:57,900 --> 00:36:04,400
[Laughter]

1076
00:36:00,720 --> 00:36:04,400
no i'm pulling that ripcord map

1077
00:36:04,740 --> 00:36:09,599
[Music]

1078
00:36:06,960 --> 00:36:11,520
music over the top of me yeah yeah just

1079
00:36:09,599 --> 00:36:13,119
joining me this week matt anyway yeah

1080
00:36:11,520 --> 00:36:14,260
anyway he can't say hey he's not here

1081
00:36:13,119 --> 00:36:16,480
anymore to say goodbye

1082
00:36:14,260 --> 00:36:17,599
[Laughter]

1083
00:36:16,480 --> 00:36:19,760
no i mean

1084
00:36:17,599 --> 00:36:21,680
i'm very fortunate that i only have one

1085
00:36:19,760 --> 00:36:24,240
other human that lives in by my house

1086
00:36:21,680 --> 00:36:25,599
with me and her patients

1087
00:36:24,240 --> 00:36:27,760
actually no i was going to say her

1088
00:36:25,599 --> 00:36:29,440
patience is endless this is recorded

1089
00:36:27,760 --> 00:36:31,599
this is recorded

1090
00:36:29,440 --> 00:36:33,520
her patience is fantastic

1091
00:36:31,599 --> 00:36:36,480
it is honest but actually her

1092
00:36:33,520 --> 00:36:38,400
expectations are so low that i could be

1093
00:36:36,480 --> 00:36:40,960
ah running around naked talking

1094
00:36:38,400 --> 00:36:42,800
gobbledygook you guys which happens not

1095
00:36:40,960 --> 00:36:44,560
the naked part but doing gobby dude for

1096
00:36:42,800 --> 00:36:46,240
you guys happens quite often that she's

1097
00:36:44,560 --> 00:36:47,680
she's walking around like his complete

1098
00:36:46,240 --> 00:36:49,040
business as usual outside i see him

1099
00:36:47,680 --> 00:36:50,160
landing wandering around out there and

1100
00:36:49,040 --> 00:36:52,240
i'm there like

1101
00:36:50,160 --> 00:36:53,920
liberty flop scooby bob you see the

1102
00:36:52,240 --> 00:36:55,760
screams of dying angels in your ears and

1103
00:36:53,920 --> 00:36:57,520
she's just like

1104
00:36:55,760 --> 00:36:59,680
making dinner or something like this

1105
00:36:57,520 --> 00:37:01,760
just picture when she goes to like

1106
00:36:59,680 --> 00:37:04,000
friends houses and stuff to be like oh

1107
00:37:01,760 --> 00:37:06,480
yeah how's your partner

1108
00:37:04,000 --> 00:37:08,400
the normal screaming in his bedroom with

1109
00:37:06,480 --> 00:37:10,560
his friends dressed up as elves and

1110
00:37:08,400 --> 00:37:13,839
they're just looking at her

1111
00:37:10,560 --> 00:37:13,839
do you want to drop some help

1112
00:37:14,960 --> 00:37:20,480
but no i that ties in nicely to

1113
00:37:18,720 --> 00:37:22,160
bringing in the newer players and you

1114
00:37:20,480 --> 00:37:23,680
mentioned when we first started playing

1115
00:37:22,160 --> 00:37:26,320
both in the session zero and when we

1116
00:37:23,680 --> 00:37:27,920
were around that big table is i went out

1117
00:37:26,320 --> 00:37:30,640
of my way

1118
00:37:27,920 --> 00:37:32,640
to have the ears in fact an xp might not

1119
00:37:30,640 --> 00:37:34,800
know this but an explicit objective of

1120
00:37:32,640 --> 00:37:35,680
mine in that session zero

1121
00:37:34,800 --> 00:37:36,880
was

1122
00:37:35,680 --> 00:37:38,880
to act

1123
00:37:36,880 --> 00:37:41,760
probably over act

1124
00:37:38,880 --> 00:37:43,359
for that exact reason of being like

1125
00:37:41,760 --> 00:37:45,440
this is this is

1126
00:37:43,359 --> 00:37:47,839
like let me remove the boundaries for

1127
00:37:45,440 --> 00:37:48,960
you because i'm already being an idiot

1128
00:37:47,839 --> 00:37:50,880
so yeah

1129
00:37:48,960 --> 00:37:52,000
and i'm you're you're here for me so if

1130
00:37:50,880 --> 00:37:53,599
you eat on mine being an idiot then

1131
00:37:52,000 --> 00:37:56,160
you'll got free reign to do whatever you

1132
00:37:53,599 --> 00:37:57,599
want that was my intent purpose there to

1133
00:37:56,160 --> 00:38:00,800
be like i've got these

1134
00:37:57,599 --> 00:38:03,440
these 20p elf ears from wish to look

1135
00:38:00,800 --> 00:38:05,599
like an idiot for half an hour like that

1136
00:38:03,440 --> 00:38:08,079
are kind of painful to wear which means

1137
00:38:05,599 --> 00:38:09,520
that anything it goes basically that's

1138
00:38:08,079 --> 00:38:11,040
that's my

1139
00:38:09,520 --> 00:38:13,040
reasoning behind it and it was for that

1140
00:38:11,040 --> 00:38:14,960
exact reason of trying to break down

1141
00:38:13,040 --> 00:38:16,320
those walls of

1142
00:38:14,960 --> 00:38:18,560
you know apprehension and

1143
00:38:16,320 --> 00:38:21,040
self-consciousness which

1144
00:38:18,560 --> 00:38:22,640
i i've we're very fortunate to have had

1145
00:38:21,040 --> 00:38:24,480
a dm like yourself there are going to be

1146
00:38:22,640 --> 00:38:25,839
a lot of people going into dnd for the

1147
00:38:24,480 --> 00:38:27,599
first time

1148
00:38:25,839 --> 00:38:29,599
that won't have that so you know someone

1149
00:38:27,599 --> 00:38:30,960
has consider it as i've got a room full

1150
00:38:29,599 --> 00:38:32,960
of

1151
00:38:30,960 --> 00:38:34,400
late 20 early 30-somethings i've never

1152
00:38:32,960 --> 00:38:37,440
played this before

1153
00:38:34,400 --> 00:38:39,040
and you think through that um because i

1154
00:38:37,440 --> 00:38:41,680
could imagine not having

1155
00:38:39,040 --> 00:38:43,920
been guided like you provided for us

1156
00:38:41,680 --> 00:38:45,119
people could walk away and be like

1157
00:38:43,920 --> 00:38:46,800
exactly what i thought this definitely

1158
00:38:45,119 --> 00:38:47,599
isn't for me i don't want to feel like

1159
00:38:46,800 --> 00:38:48,720
that

1160
00:38:47,599 --> 00:38:50,560
again

1161
00:38:48,720 --> 00:38:52,880
i remember as we left and got in the car

1162
00:38:50,560 --> 00:38:56,800
we were in fits of hysterics but

1163
00:38:52,880 --> 00:38:58,079
not it was almost like a relief like

1164
00:38:56,800 --> 00:39:00,720
dantelo

1165
00:38:58,079 --> 00:39:02,000
is that was brilliant never in a million

1166
00:39:00,720 --> 00:39:03,839
years do we think that was going to

1167
00:39:02,000 --> 00:39:05,680
happen so yeah and then

1168
00:39:03,839 --> 00:39:07,440
that was all broken down

1169
00:39:05,680 --> 00:39:08,880
and i want other players to experience

1170
00:39:07,440 --> 00:39:10,800
that and

1171
00:39:08,880 --> 00:39:12,320
not feel all the apprehension stuff that

1172
00:39:10,800 --> 00:39:14,560
sits behind

1173
00:39:12,320 --> 00:39:16,640
basically acting you know you're yes

1174
00:39:14,560 --> 00:39:18,079
you're an actor at a table you think

1175
00:39:16,640 --> 00:39:20,000
i was really nervous at school getting

1176
00:39:18,079 --> 00:39:21,200
up on stage to do acting and i was like

1177
00:39:20,000 --> 00:39:23,359
i'm not going to sit and do a voice but

1178
00:39:21,200 --> 00:39:24,640
the second you did a voice was like

1179
00:39:23,359 --> 00:39:26,320
sit in the mirror for a bit and try and

1180
00:39:24,640 --> 00:39:27,680
figure out the voice of somebody else

1181
00:39:26,320 --> 00:39:30,000
and

1182
00:39:27,680 --> 00:39:31,680
come on my little weird voice i'll

1183
00:39:30,000 --> 00:39:33,599
hold forever i think

1184
00:39:31,680 --> 00:39:36,240
so listeners will know their sonic day

1185
00:39:33,599 --> 00:39:38,160
but you don't matt in that when i was

1186
00:39:36,240 --> 00:39:40,160
riding my motorcycle tuned from the work

1187
00:39:38,160 --> 00:39:42,960
that we used to share

1188
00:39:40,160 --> 00:39:45,040
i would practice voices

1189
00:39:42,960 --> 00:39:47,440
because i was you know in isolation in

1190
00:39:45,040 --> 00:39:49,920
my helmet going down the motorway no one

1191
00:39:47,440 --> 00:39:51,359
can hear i'm on my own that i would

1192
00:39:49,920 --> 00:39:52,560
i would practice

1193
00:39:51,359 --> 00:39:54,560
to and from

1194
00:39:52,560 --> 00:39:55,280
work fantastic

1195
00:39:54,560 --> 00:39:56,720
see

1196
00:39:55,280 --> 00:39:59,119
i don't in the shower or when i'm

1197
00:39:56,720 --> 00:40:00,640
driving and yes as i was driving back

1198
00:39:59,119 --> 00:40:02,000
from work because i realized i submitted

1199
00:40:00,640 --> 00:40:04,800
all my new character sheets to you for

1200
00:40:02,000 --> 00:40:07,560
this uh for my new character

1201
00:40:04,800 --> 00:40:10,240
i was trying to say his name because uh

1202
00:40:07,560 --> 00:40:11,599
dracodandian is his clan name and i kept

1203
00:40:10,240 --> 00:40:12,880
getting it wrong and i was like well

1204
00:40:11,599 --> 00:40:14,000
just practice it like you did with all

1205
00:40:12,880 --> 00:40:14,800
your big words that you've learned in

1206
00:40:14,000 --> 00:40:15,680
life

1207
00:40:14,800 --> 00:40:17,440
and then

1208
00:40:15,680 --> 00:40:19,280
i was doing it in theron's voice and i

1209
00:40:17,440 --> 00:40:20,960
was like matt you need a new voice how

1210
00:40:19,280 --> 00:40:22,880
do i come up with something again that

1211
00:40:20,960 --> 00:40:24,880
i'm so comfortable now doing theron's

1212
00:40:22,880 --> 00:40:26,640
voice and the kids know and everything

1213
00:40:24,880 --> 00:40:28,160
else and i think i'll put it in the text

1214
00:40:26,640 --> 00:40:29,920
to you where i was like the best you've

1215
00:40:28,160 --> 00:40:32,160
got is therin mixed with david

1216
00:40:29,920 --> 00:40:34,079
attenborough and that's he's slightly

1217
00:40:32,160 --> 00:40:36,640
posher a little bit more upbeat but

1218
00:40:34,079 --> 00:40:38,560
that's as far as i can get it i can't

1219
00:40:36,640 --> 00:40:39,480
ask for anything more

1220
00:40:38,560 --> 00:40:41,359
that's perfect

1221
00:40:39,480 --> 00:40:42,079
[Laughter]

1222
00:40:41,359 --> 00:40:44,000
but

1223
00:40:42,079 --> 00:40:45,920
that whole having to invent new things

1224
00:40:44,000 --> 00:40:48,880
again brought out

1225
00:40:45,920 --> 00:40:50,800
all the excitement again of you know

1226
00:40:48,880 --> 00:40:52,000
the early days of i've got absolutely no

1227
00:40:50,800 --> 00:40:53,520
idea what i'm doing here but this time

1228
00:40:52,000 --> 00:40:55,680
around i had all that experience and

1229
00:40:53,520 --> 00:40:58,960
guidance from you the players handbook

1230
00:40:55,680 --> 00:41:00,560
the wonderful people of youtube

1231
00:40:58,960 --> 00:41:03,599
and yeah i found that this time around

1232
00:41:00,560 --> 00:41:06,319
even more enjoyable creating a character

1233
00:41:03,599 --> 00:41:07,760
there is a reason why there's a meme of

1234
00:41:06,319 --> 00:41:10,880
people having

1235
00:41:07,760 --> 00:41:12,720
200 unused character sheets because like

1236
00:41:10,880 --> 00:41:14,079
people it's that is one of the more

1237
00:41:12,720 --> 00:41:16,160
exciting things

1238
00:41:14,079 --> 00:41:18,319
for a lot of people is is is doing that

1239
00:41:16,160 --> 00:41:20,960
process that you've just gone through

1240
00:41:18,319 --> 00:41:23,280
at the dm and the game that i play in he

1241
00:41:20,960 --> 00:41:25,200
has literally i've seen his sheets he

1242
00:41:23,280 --> 00:41:27,040
was scrolling through trying to find one

1243
00:41:25,200 --> 00:41:28,319
and it is in the hundreds

1244
00:41:27,040 --> 00:41:31,599
i was like well you're really making use

1245
00:41:28,319 --> 00:41:31,599
of that unlimited character sheet

1246
00:41:31,680 --> 00:41:36,079
huh

1247
00:41:32,839 --> 00:41:39,200
cool i um i did a

1248
00:41:36,079 --> 00:41:40,480
excel sheet in the early days of what

1249
00:41:39,200 --> 00:41:43,280
the races i would like to play what

1250
00:41:40,480 --> 00:41:45,440
those classes are and based purely on

1251
00:41:43,280 --> 00:41:47,680
that what you know i like the word

1252
00:41:45,440 --> 00:41:49,040
wizard that sounds cool i also like

1253
00:41:47,680 --> 00:41:51,440
human i'll put those two together there

1254
00:41:49,040 --> 00:41:53,599
was no stats that sat behind it

1255
00:41:51,440 --> 00:41:54,560
there was a monk that oh even this time

1256
00:41:53,599 --> 00:41:56,640
around when i went back through that

1257
00:41:54,560 --> 00:41:57,760
list i thought nope that looks far too

1258
00:41:56,640 --> 00:41:58,720
complex

1259
00:41:57,760 --> 00:42:00,800
um

1260
00:41:58,720 --> 00:42:02,880
there was a

1261
00:42:00,800 --> 00:42:05,359
i like the idea of playing a tiefling a

1262
00:42:02,880 --> 00:42:07,040
female tiefling but i'm not quite ready

1263
00:42:05,359 --> 00:42:09,280
for that yet i think that'll be the next

1264
00:42:07,040 --> 00:42:11,440
character that i'll develop into which

1265
00:42:09,280 --> 00:42:12,960
is why there was a huge relief when this

1266
00:42:11,440 --> 00:42:15,760
time around we have a female in the

1267
00:42:12,960 --> 00:42:18,480
party i was like dude whoa

1268
00:42:15,760 --> 00:42:18,480
that's huge

1269
00:42:18,560 --> 00:42:21,280
but yeah and i think i'm going to be

1270
00:42:20,160 --> 00:42:22,800
progressing

1271
00:42:21,280 --> 00:42:24,560
down that road of

1272
00:42:22,800 --> 00:42:26,400
hopefully playing a female character in

1273
00:42:24,560 --> 00:42:27,280
the next part yeah which would be

1274
00:42:26,400 --> 00:42:28,240
awesome

1275
00:42:27,280 --> 00:42:29,359
yes

1276
00:42:28,240 --> 00:42:31,920
well you have to wait for this one to

1277
00:42:29,359 --> 00:42:33,200
die which may or may not happen that was

1278
00:42:31,920 --> 00:42:34,800
really close by the way in that first

1279
00:42:33,200 --> 00:42:36,640
session back uh

1280
00:42:34,800 --> 00:42:38,400
i made loads of errors on my turns a

1281
00:42:36,640 --> 00:42:40,880
couple of people dropped down to oh

1282
00:42:38,400 --> 00:42:42,400
danielle was going full throttle eh his

1283
00:42:40,880 --> 00:42:44,240
first session back in the new year he's

1284
00:42:42,400 --> 00:42:46,240
like okay let's see how good those

1285
00:42:44,240 --> 00:42:48,400
characters you've just made are

1286
00:42:46,240 --> 00:42:49,839
well you know i knew everyone was hungry

1287
00:42:48,400 --> 00:42:51,520
we haven't played for ages everyone

1288
00:42:49,839 --> 00:42:53,359
wants to try out their shiny new toys

1289
00:42:51,520 --> 00:42:54,560
it's just like christmas right you you

1290
00:42:53,359 --> 00:42:56,079
get you know you just go you've just

1291
00:42:54,560 --> 00:42:58,160
unwrapped your playstation 2 you want to

1292
00:42:56,079 --> 00:43:00,160
get that [ __ ] under the telly as soon as

1293
00:42:58,160 --> 00:43:00,960
possible like you don't want to that's

1294
00:43:00,160 --> 00:43:02,800
it

1295
00:43:00,960 --> 00:43:05,040
get it plugged in get it going and when

1296
00:43:02,800 --> 00:43:06,560
you did that lead intro bit for for the

1297
00:43:05,040 --> 00:43:08,720
characters he you know stood at the

1298
00:43:06,560 --> 00:43:10,640
doorway and he walked in i'd practice

1299
00:43:08,720 --> 00:43:12,000
the line that i wanted to do over and

1300
00:43:10,640 --> 00:43:14,000
over and over and it's supposed to come

1301
00:43:12,000 --> 00:43:16,160
in like really deep like i am dragon

1302
00:43:14,000 --> 00:43:18,240
dandy and rogar and when you did it you

1303
00:43:16,160 --> 00:43:20,079
went and action matt go i was like oh hi

1304
00:43:18,240 --> 00:43:21,760
i'm i'm a dragon porn chap you're right

1305
00:43:20,079 --> 00:43:23,599
guys

1306
00:43:21,760 --> 00:43:24,960
i couldn't get my voice in but because

1307
00:43:23,599 --> 00:43:27,200
it just switched over to me i was like

1308
00:43:24,960 --> 00:43:30,560
oh it's i've we've gone with it now

1309
00:43:27,200 --> 00:43:30,560
i have to accept that forever

1310
00:43:30,640 --> 00:43:34,880
if it makes you feel any better

1311
00:43:32,800 --> 00:43:37,200
simon who plays in the game that i play

1312
00:43:34,880 --> 00:43:39,280
in and it was on one episode again back

1313
00:43:37,200 --> 00:43:41,359
in season one i think it's a running

1314
00:43:39,280 --> 00:43:43,839
joke in our campaign with him

1315
00:43:41,359 --> 00:43:45,200
that his voice i think changed three

1316
00:43:43,839 --> 00:43:46,960
sessions in a row because he wasn't

1317
00:43:45,200 --> 00:43:49,200
happy with it so he did like a sean

1318
00:43:46,960 --> 00:43:51,920
connery one and we're like okay

1319
00:43:49,200 --> 00:43:53,520
there's a lot there okay uh but fine

1320
00:43:51,920 --> 00:43:54,720
but then because it was

1321
00:43:53,520 --> 00:43:56,560
it was so

1322
00:43:54,720 --> 00:43:58,560
like we couldn't help but laugh because

1323
00:43:56,560 --> 00:43:59,760
it's he does it really well as well so

1324
00:43:58,560 --> 00:44:01,200
it's like you can't

1325
00:43:59,760 --> 00:44:03,119
but this is a bit now this isn't the

1326
00:44:01,200 --> 00:44:04,400
character voices it's just a big really

1327
00:44:03,119 --> 00:44:06,319
long bit

1328
00:44:04,400 --> 00:44:07,440
for the rest of the campaign seems like

1329
00:44:06,319 --> 00:44:08,560
yeah i'm gonna wind that down a little

1330
00:44:07,440 --> 00:44:10,160
bit because it's people can't

1331
00:44:08,560 --> 00:44:12,160
concentrate

1332
00:44:10,160 --> 00:44:14,240
so he changed another one and then we

1333
00:44:12,160 --> 00:44:16,960
did the whole fourth wall like why are

1334
00:44:14,240 --> 00:44:18,720
you talking different now like

1335
00:44:16,960 --> 00:44:22,160
literally we went to bed and woke up and

1336
00:44:18,720 --> 00:44:23,520
now you're not scottish anymore

1337
00:44:22,160 --> 00:44:25,200
but obviously like you know that's a bit

1338
00:44:23,520 --> 00:44:26,160
of a light engagement yeah they wouldn't

1339
00:44:25,200 --> 00:44:28,480
really do that because you kind of

1340
00:44:26,160 --> 00:44:29,839
reckoned it and stuff but like that like

1341
00:44:28,480 --> 00:44:32,240
people change their voices

1342
00:44:29,839 --> 00:44:34,160
all the time even and then we're midway

1343
00:44:32,240 --> 00:44:35,119
through the campaign and uh it will

1344
00:44:34,160 --> 00:44:37,599
change

1345
00:44:35,119 --> 00:44:39,760
and that's just that's so good but the

1346
00:44:37,599 --> 00:44:41,520
the benefit of being a dm of course is

1347
00:44:39,760 --> 00:44:42,640
the npcs that you might not see that

1348
00:44:41,520 --> 00:44:43,760
frequently

1349
00:44:42,640 --> 00:44:45,599
i don't really have to remember their

1350
00:44:43,760 --> 00:44:47,599
voice because if i can't remember the

1351
00:44:45,599 --> 00:44:49,599
players definitely can't remember so

1352
00:44:47,599 --> 00:44:51,920
certainly i'm remembering the key one is

1353
00:44:49,599 --> 00:44:52,800
still still on point yeah yeah but i

1354
00:44:51,920 --> 00:44:55,200
started thinking like oh you haven't

1355
00:44:52,800 --> 00:44:57,040
seen like the major npc you saw like the

1356
00:44:55,200 --> 00:44:58,560
don last time i was like they haven't

1357
00:44:57,040 --> 00:45:00,960
seen him for ages

1358
00:44:58,560 --> 00:45:03,960
i'll just default to one that was

1359
00:45:00,960 --> 00:45:03,960
swedish

1360
00:45:04,480 --> 00:45:08,800
norwegians

1361
00:45:06,640 --> 00:45:11,440
communicate what i needed to communicate

1362
00:45:08,800 --> 00:45:13,200
and uh yeah that's that's the little dm

1363
00:45:11,440 --> 00:45:14,800
trick is uh just leave it ages before

1364
00:45:13,200 --> 00:45:17,660
you see npcs and then you can just make

1365
00:45:14,800 --> 00:45:21,660
whatever voice you want for them

1366
00:45:17,660 --> 00:45:21,660
[Laughter]

1367
00:45:22,160 --> 00:45:27,359
just quickly for a little tangent i'm

1368
00:45:25,280 --> 00:45:30,000
also new to um

1369
00:45:27,359 --> 00:45:32,160
voiceovers the the those apps the voice

1370
00:45:30,000 --> 00:45:34,800
changing apps yeah tried a couple of

1371
00:45:32,160 --> 00:45:36,480
them one of them just broke all my audio

1372
00:45:34,800 --> 00:45:39,040
drivers that's why for this i had to

1373
00:45:36,480 --> 00:45:40,800
reinstall my audio drivers i was like ah

1374
00:45:39,040 --> 00:45:41,920
it saw the program that overwrote a load

1375
00:45:40,800 --> 00:45:43,920
of stuff

1376
00:45:41,920 --> 00:45:45,520
so that was a pain and i didn't end up

1377
00:45:43,920 --> 00:45:47,599
using it anyway

1378
00:45:45,520 --> 00:45:48,960
yeah it's weird again we're going to

1379
00:45:47,599 --> 00:45:50,400
digress a little bit here for everybody

1380
00:45:48,960 --> 00:45:52,560
at home but um

1381
00:45:50,400 --> 00:45:54,640
something that you'd think would be

1382
00:45:52,560 --> 00:45:55,839
everywhere like

1383
00:45:54,640 --> 00:45:57,040
you know if you want if you want to talk

1384
00:45:55,839 --> 00:46:00,079
like we're talking now with cameras

1385
00:45:57,040 --> 00:46:01,599
you've got you google online chat or

1386
00:46:00,079 --> 00:46:02,560
something and they'll be yeah at seven

1387
00:46:01,599 --> 00:46:04,960
million

1388
00:46:02,560 --> 00:46:07,839
zoom teamspeak discord

1389
00:46:04,960 --> 00:46:09,280
microsoft teams skype skype for business

1390
00:46:07,839 --> 00:46:10,560
and then probably about 50 others that

1391
00:46:09,280 --> 00:46:12,480
i'm not aware of

1392
00:46:10,560 --> 00:46:15,119
google meets another one off the top of

1393
00:46:12,480 --> 00:46:16,400
my head um other platforms are available

1394
00:46:15,119 --> 00:46:17,440
uh yeah of course your

1395
00:46:16,400 --> 00:46:20,400
your voip

1396
00:46:17,440 --> 00:46:22,800
video platform of choice of course uh

1397
00:46:20,400 --> 00:46:25,040
and uh but the moment you search like

1398
00:46:22,800 --> 00:46:27,200
voice changer you're like immediately

1399
00:46:25,040 --> 00:46:31,040
into the murky territory of like

1400
00:46:27,200 --> 00:46:33,359
download this file wink it's totally not

1401
00:46:31,040 --> 00:46:35,920
going to break your computer

1402
00:46:33,359 --> 00:46:38,160
or like and it does

1403
00:46:35,920 --> 00:46:39,119
here's a voice changer that'll be 300

1404
00:46:38,160 --> 00:46:40,079
somewhat

1405
00:46:39,119 --> 00:46:41,200
what

1406
00:46:40,079 --> 00:46:42,480
yeah

1407
00:46:41,200 --> 00:46:43,599
i just want to sound a little bit cool

1408
00:46:42,480 --> 00:46:46,160
for people because that'd be a really

1409
00:46:43,599 --> 00:46:47,680
cool surprise for everyone but no yeah

1410
00:46:46,160 --> 00:46:48,880
broke my audio drivers and i went to bed

1411
00:46:47,680 --> 00:46:50,960
in a sulk

1412
00:46:48,880 --> 00:46:54,079
i that is a pain i have felt myself in

1413
00:46:50,960 --> 00:46:55,520
the past so yeah that i for some reason

1414
00:46:54,079 --> 00:46:56,880
i'm still bamboozled by that this day i

1415
00:46:55,520 --> 00:46:59,119
found one that

1416
00:46:56,880 --> 00:47:01,760
kind of maybe works some of the time and

1417
00:46:59,119 --> 00:47:03,839
that's like okay fine i'm just gonna

1418
00:47:01,760 --> 00:47:04,880
forget about it and either use it or it

1419
00:47:03,839 --> 00:47:06,800
doesn't

1420
00:47:04,880 --> 00:47:11,040
just pick up one of those masks from

1421
00:47:06,800 --> 00:47:11,040
like a toy shop that does it yeah

1422
00:47:14,160 --> 00:47:17,170
see if i can find one that roughly

1423
00:47:15,839 --> 00:47:18,800
resembles a dragon

1424
00:47:17,170 --> 00:47:21,200
[Laughter]

1425
00:47:18,800 --> 00:47:22,960
um one of the questions i asked earlier

1426
00:47:21,200 --> 00:47:26,400
that we haven't got back around to yet

1427
00:47:22,960 --> 00:47:29,119
was as a virgin new player two titty

1428
00:47:26,400 --> 00:47:30,400
apogees what's your

1429
00:47:29,119 --> 00:47:31,760
let me ask a

1430
00:47:30,400 --> 00:47:34,559
couple of really interesting questions

1431
00:47:31,760 --> 00:47:36,480
one what were you most surprised by like

1432
00:47:34,559 --> 00:47:38,480
what was the most thing that was like oh

1433
00:47:36,480 --> 00:47:39,359
i wasn't expecting i wasn't expecting

1434
00:47:38,480 --> 00:47:40,720
that

1435
00:47:39,359 --> 00:47:42,480
and then

1436
00:47:40,720 --> 00:47:43,920
this question's on deck you're up next

1437
00:47:42,480 --> 00:47:45,680
uh the other question is what have you

1438
00:47:43,920 --> 00:47:48,400
enjoyed the most like what element what

1439
00:47:45,680 --> 00:47:50,240
aspect and probably why

1440
00:47:48,400 --> 00:47:52,800
okay so

1441
00:47:50,240 --> 00:47:54,240
probably what i'm most surprised by is

1442
00:47:52,800 --> 00:47:55,359
everyone's commitment

1443
00:47:54,240 --> 00:47:58,160
to it

1444
00:47:55,359 --> 00:48:00,319
not not just our party but you know the

1445
00:47:58,160 --> 00:48:01,839
wider community i mean even in the early

1446
00:48:00,319 --> 00:48:03,200
days of your podcast when it first

1447
00:48:01,839 --> 00:48:06,000
started going out

1448
00:48:03,200 --> 00:48:08,240
a content in my opinion and others

1449
00:48:06,000 --> 00:48:09,839
brilliant but you've gained traction in

1450
00:48:08,240 --> 00:48:12,000
an audience really quickly because you

1451
00:48:09,839 --> 00:48:13,359
weren't slandering people and

1452
00:48:12,000 --> 00:48:15,359
you know you weren't talking load of

1453
00:48:13,359 --> 00:48:17,839
rubbish and people were interested in it

1454
00:48:15,359 --> 00:48:19,520
and people want to talk about it um the

1455
00:48:17,839 --> 00:48:21,359
other things that i'm into in my

1456
00:48:19,520 --> 00:48:23,599
personal life are quite solitary things

1457
00:48:21,359 --> 00:48:26,000
that you i don't get that so i was

1458
00:48:23,599 --> 00:48:27,920
surprised by this massive community that

1459
00:48:26,000 --> 00:48:29,440
wanted to play wanted to talk about it

1460
00:48:27,920 --> 00:48:31,440
you never felt like you couldn't ask

1461
00:48:29,440 --> 00:48:33,599
questions and things like that

1462
00:48:31,440 --> 00:48:34,960
which was lovely and

1463
00:48:33,599 --> 00:48:37,200
the commitment from the guys that are at

1464
00:48:34,960 --> 00:48:39,359
the table were our table

1465
00:48:37,200 --> 00:48:41,440
okay we may run five minutes late

1466
00:48:39,359 --> 00:48:44,160
starting and a few things here and there

1467
00:48:41,440 --> 00:48:45,520
but every week i feel like everyone

1468
00:48:44,160 --> 00:48:46,880
wants to play and everyone's committed

1469
00:48:45,520 --> 00:48:49,359
to it

1470
00:48:46,880 --> 00:48:51,599
from a more mechanical side of things

1471
00:48:49,359 --> 00:48:53,599
i was surprised by

1472
00:48:51,599 --> 00:48:56,000
how close

1473
00:48:53,599 --> 00:48:58,079
we are always to die in slash winning

1474
00:48:56,000 --> 00:48:59,599
those battles which is a credit to you

1475
00:48:58,079 --> 00:49:02,480
for the balance

1476
00:48:59,599 --> 00:49:05,599
but monsters are hard man

1477
00:49:02,480 --> 00:49:05,599
dragons are hard

1478
00:49:05,839 --> 00:49:09,680
weird creature that because i haven't

1479
00:49:07,760 --> 00:49:11,359
got access to the monster handbooks

1480
00:49:09,680 --> 00:49:13,119
cheers for making me try and buy

1481
00:49:11,359 --> 00:49:15,119
everything d

1482
00:49:13,119 --> 00:49:17,119
because i haven't got access to that

1483
00:49:15,119 --> 00:49:17,839
you throw these crazy monsters out that

1484
00:49:17,119 --> 00:49:20,160
are

1485
00:49:17,839 --> 00:49:21,359
swallowing people and the ground starts

1486
00:49:20,160 --> 00:49:23,920
to move a little bit oh my god it's a

1487
00:49:21,359 --> 00:49:26,000
giant blob that's going to kill everyone

1488
00:49:23,920 --> 00:49:28,160
those things constantly surprise me i

1489
00:49:26,000 --> 00:49:29,280
just thought it was dungeons and dragons

1490
00:49:28,160 --> 00:49:30,559
okay cool we've got some dragons there's

1491
00:49:29,280 --> 00:49:32,559
gonna be some ogres and stuff like that

1492
00:49:30,559 --> 00:49:34,240
but the you know the plethora of

1493
00:49:32,559 --> 00:49:36,000
monsters and

1494
00:49:34,240 --> 00:49:37,040
your knowledge in those monsters so you

1495
00:49:36,000 --> 00:49:38,720
can bring

1496
00:49:37,040 --> 00:49:40,240
maybe slightly trickier ones because

1497
00:49:38,720 --> 00:49:40,960
we've got an extra person in the party

1498
00:49:40,240 --> 00:49:43,040
or

1499
00:49:40,960 --> 00:49:44,880
this situation would suit this crazy

1500
00:49:43,040 --> 00:49:46,480
combat

1501
00:49:44,880 --> 00:49:48,720
i'll leave some time when cat just looks

1502
00:49:46,480 --> 00:49:49,760
at me sorry my partner cat it would be

1503
00:49:48,720 --> 00:49:51,119
like

1504
00:49:49,760 --> 00:49:53,040
what happened tonight you were just

1505
00:49:51,119 --> 00:49:56,480
shouting the whole time i'm like babe

1506
00:49:53,040 --> 00:49:56,480
the floor was eating people or

1507
00:49:57,040 --> 00:50:00,400
it was a crazy session leave me alone

1508
00:49:58,559 --> 00:50:01,119
for a bit i need to try and figure this

1509
00:50:00,400 --> 00:50:02,720
out

1510
00:50:01,119 --> 00:50:04,880
and then i'll try and plan my stuff for

1511
00:50:02,720 --> 00:50:06,400
the next session like that and it's rp

1512
00:50:04,880 --> 00:50:08,240
for three weeks which is brilliant but

1513
00:50:06,400 --> 00:50:10,000
then i forget how to battle and then you

1514
00:50:08,240 --> 00:50:13,839
come back with a dress

1515
00:50:10,000 --> 00:50:14,880
constantly on edge um and what i enjoy

1516
00:50:13,839 --> 00:50:17,839
most

1517
00:50:14,880 --> 00:50:20,640
about what dnd in general

1518
00:50:17,839 --> 00:50:22,720
yeah yeah the the experience for lack of

1519
00:50:20,640 --> 00:50:25,119
a more defined term

1520
00:50:22,720 --> 00:50:26,480
it will probably be the creation side of

1521
00:50:25,119 --> 00:50:27,359
it

1522
00:50:26,480 --> 00:50:28,800
so

1523
00:50:27,359 --> 00:50:31,440
not just for me in creating my

1524
00:50:28,800 --> 00:50:33,280
characters and those sides which

1525
00:50:31,440 --> 00:50:35,359
is good for my

1526
00:50:33,280 --> 00:50:37,359
my brain when i sit down and build stuff

1527
00:50:35,359 --> 00:50:39,359
because i like to write stories and

1528
00:50:37,359 --> 00:50:41,920
poetry

1529
00:50:39,359 --> 00:50:43,839
the backstory bit is that's easy for me

1530
00:50:41,920 --> 00:50:46,240
but also seeing the creations that you

1531
00:50:43,839 --> 00:50:48,400
come up with for like the maps and

1532
00:50:46,240 --> 00:50:50,079
i think we're hugely fortunate in your

1533
00:50:48,400 --> 00:50:52,319
homebrew is this

1534
00:50:50,079 --> 00:50:53,920
huge world that you've created and seem

1535
00:50:52,319 --> 00:50:55,599
to be picking stories out left right and

1536
00:50:53,920 --> 00:50:57,280
center more of how terry pratchett wrote

1537
00:50:55,599 --> 00:50:59,599
his books where he built a world and

1538
00:50:57,280 --> 00:51:01,839
then choose stories rather than

1539
00:50:59,599 --> 00:51:03,200
building stories to make a world

1540
00:51:01,839 --> 00:51:05,599
um

1541
00:51:03,200 --> 00:51:08,640
and i i enjoy seeing you get excited

1542
00:51:05,599 --> 00:51:10,400
about stuff that we will happily miss

1543
00:51:08,640 --> 00:51:12,480
and go off in a different tangent in the

1544
00:51:10,400 --> 00:51:13,680
game but also

1545
00:51:12,480 --> 00:51:15,440
where other players at the table have

1546
00:51:13,680 --> 00:51:17,119
created their characters it's

1547
00:51:15,440 --> 00:51:19,119
i love creating stuff you guys are

1548
00:51:17,119 --> 00:51:21,680
creating stuff and it's all coming

1549
00:51:19,119 --> 00:51:25,040
together for us to get our face smashed

1550
00:51:21,680 --> 00:51:27,040
in by the evil guy in a minute but

1551
00:51:25,040 --> 00:51:28,319
that's lovely i you know when i was

1552
00:51:27,040 --> 00:51:29,599
writing music

1553
00:51:28,319 --> 00:51:30,960
that's what i enjoyed most about it

1554
00:51:29,599 --> 00:51:33,680
wasn't necessarily the output it was

1555
00:51:30,960 --> 00:51:35,599
that coming together of stuff yeah and

1556
00:51:33,680 --> 00:51:37,280
being creative with other people what

1557
00:51:35,599 --> 00:51:39,440
about you

1558
00:51:37,280 --> 00:51:40,640
i know dm takes its toll

1559
00:51:39,440 --> 00:51:42,240
yeah well here's the here's a funny

1560
00:51:40,640 --> 00:51:44,319
thing you've answered that question

1561
00:51:42,240 --> 00:51:46,720
unbeknownst to you with your own answers

1562
00:51:44,319 --> 00:51:48,640
there so i also love and you would also

1563
00:51:46,720 --> 00:51:50,800
like like creating homebrew because

1564
00:51:48,640 --> 00:51:51,920
there is one thing i do get very excited

1565
00:51:50,800 --> 00:51:54,079
about is

1566
00:51:51,920 --> 00:51:56,240
as i've told you guys before i have like

1567
00:51:54,079 --> 00:51:58,000
my dm confidence that i'll we'll just

1568
00:51:56,240 --> 00:51:59,119
chat for an hour and then at the end of

1569
00:51:58,000 --> 00:52:00,960
it i'm like i've got to write all that

1570
00:51:59,119 --> 00:52:02,800
down because we were just talking [ __ ]

1571
00:52:00,960 --> 00:52:05,520
but there were some really good ideas in

1572
00:52:02,800 --> 00:52:07,920
there that i really want to play and

1573
00:52:05,520 --> 00:52:09,599
put in some kind of

1574
00:52:07,920 --> 00:52:11,359
form that isn't just

1575
00:52:09,599 --> 00:52:13,680
x that's why and that'll be great

1576
00:52:11,359 --> 00:52:14,720
because story will happen it needs to be

1577
00:52:13,680 --> 00:52:16,400
there needs to be a little bit more

1578
00:52:14,720 --> 00:52:19,119
structure than just downloads whimsical

1579
00:52:16,400 --> 00:52:20,720
idea but um yeah the creation sort of

1580
00:52:19,119 --> 00:52:22,400
thing is very exciting and to be like oh

1581
00:52:20,720 --> 00:52:24,559
then that could happen

1582
00:52:22,400 --> 00:52:27,040
the tricky thing is is not as it is with

1583
00:52:24,559 --> 00:52:28,880
d it's not to have too many too much

1584
00:52:27,040 --> 00:52:30,880
plot and too much

1585
00:52:28,880 --> 00:52:32,800
uh you know this has to happen for that

1586
00:52:30,880 --> 00:52:33,760
then to happen so then this other thing

1587
00:52:32,800 --> 00:52:36,559
can happen

1588
00:52:33,760 --> 00:52:37,760
so a good example is uh the setting

1589
00:52:36,559 --> 00:52:39,920
where we've talked about the podcast

1590
00:52:37,760 --> 00:52:41,119
before where there was a green dragon

1591
00:52:39,920 --> 00:52:43,200
that was

1592
00:52:41,119 --> 00:52:44,079
kind of manipulating a

1593
00:52:43,200 --> 00:52:45,680
town

1594
00:52:44,079 --> 00:52:47,359
and in the town there was a minor civil

1595
00:52:45,680 --> 00:52:49,359
dispute between like blue collar and

1596
00:52:47,359 --> 00:52:51,119
white collar workers so i was very

1597
00:52:49,359 --> 00:52:53,040
excited about that setup and all the

1598
00:52:51,119 --> 00:52:55,200
little minutiae and

1599
00:52:53,040 --> 00:52:56,559
here's the poster that the miners the

1600
00:52:55,200 --> 00:52:58,800
blue collar workers give you to go and

1601
00:52:56,559 --> 00:53:00,720
find their miners pub to learn more

1602
00:52:58,800 --> 00:53:02,720
about them that that is super cool and

1603
00:53:00,720 --> 00:53:03,839
super exciting and i'm very happy with

1604
00:53:02,720 --> 00:53:06,000
how that turned out because it was a

1605
00:53:03,839 --> 00:53:07,359
very good example if i do say so myself

1606
00:53:06,000 --> 00:53:09,359
of like

1607
00:53:07,359 --> 00:53:11,520
here's a bunch of stuff that's that is

1608
00:53:09,359 --> 00:53:13,440
happening now

1609
00:53:11,520 --> 00:53:14,559
what the players do is is you know

1610
00:53:13,440 --> 00:53:16,480
stuff's going to happen whether they're

1611
00:53:14,559 --> 00:53:18,160
there or not kind of things like that

1612
00:53:16,480 --> 00:53:20,480
that dragon's always going to be there

1613
00:53:18,160 --> 00:53:22,880
manipulating with their own plans

1614
00:53:20,480 --> 00:53:25,200
this civil dispute it will end at some

1615
00:53:22,880 --> 00:53:26,960
point in some way depending on what

1616
00:53:25,200 --> 00:53:28,480
happens and the players can

1617
00:53:26,960 --> 00:53:30,480
can

1618
00:53:28,480 --> 00:53:32,079
impact that to a certain extent and

1619
00:53:30,480 --> 00:53:33,280
that's the

1620
00:53:32,079 --> 00:53:35,440
that's the

1621
00:53:33,280 --> 00:53:37,359
exciting bit uh but also the tricky bit

1622
00:53:35,440 --> 00:53:39,599
because you want to build in

1623
00:53:37,359 --> 00:53:42,720
you want to build

1624
00:53:39,599 --> 00:53:44,319
like story and plot a hard plot but you

1625
00:53:42,720 --> 00:53:46,240
you yeah it'd be brothers if it was just

1626
00:53:44,319 --> 00:53:47,200
a check box exercise going through yeah

1627
00:53:46,240 --> 00:53:49,680
you've done that you've done this you've

1628
00:53:47,200 --> 00:53:51,839
done it exactly yeah so it it's a it's a

1629
00:53:49,680 --> 00:53:52,800
fine line as a dm to walk but the price

1630
00:53:51,839 --> 00:53:54,880
of

1631
00:53:52,800 --> 00:53:56,640
the price of having that much fun and

1632
00:53:54,880 --> 00:53:58,640
you know character creation is one and

1633
00:53:56,640 --> 00:54:01,119
done kind of thing the price of being

1634
00:53:58,640 --> 00:54:02,960
able to do basically character creation

1635
00:54:01,119 --> 00:54:04,960
every two weeks

1636
00:54:02,960 --> 00:54:07,119
for every session always

1637
00:54:04,960 --> 00:54:09,359
both micro macro is the combat

1638
00:54:07,119 --> 00:54:10,720
encounters because they are

1639
00:54:09,359 --> 00:54:12,240
exceptionally difficult at the best of

1640
00:54:10,720 --> 00:54:15,119
times

1641
00:54:12,240 --> 00:54:18,240
doubly so with six now five players

1642
00:54:15,119 --> 00:54:20,480
which have all gone like burst dps apart

1643
00:54:18,240 --> 00:54:22,079
from like one and a half of you

1644
00:54:20,480 --> 00:54:23,760
it is

1645
00:54:22,079 --> 00:54:25,680
a nightmare

1646
00:54:23,760 --> 00:54:28,720
that's probably my least

1647
00:54:25,680 --> 00:54:29,760
favorite bit that takes forever

1648
00:54:28,720 --> 00:54:32,559
and

1649
00:54:29,760 --> 00:54:36,079
is very difficult to not make you all

1650
00:54:32,559 --> 00:54:38,480
die or not be completely boring

1651
00:54:36,079 --> 00:54:40,000
that's that's a really interesting bit

1652
00:54:38,480 --> 00:54:42,000
actually because

1653
00:54:40,000 --> 00:54:43,920
we went from a party of

1654
00:54:42,000 --> 00:54:45,920
a genuine mishap

1655
00:54:43,920 --> 00:54:47,200
group of characters you know there was

1656
00:54:45,920 --> 00:54:50,079
no

1657
00:54:47,200 --> 00:54:51,359
team ethics there was no you know we can

1658
00:54:50,079 --> 00:54:53,280
defend so we're going to bring one of

1659
00:54:51,359 --> 00:54:55,040
these characters in it was

1660
00:54:53,280 --> 00:54:56,799
five or six people just turned up like

1661
00:54:55,040 --> 00:54:58,400
oh you're right yeah i can do this by

1662
00:54:56,799 --> 00:55:01,440
the way i've got a really tragic back

1663
00:54:58,400 --> 00:55:04,400
story and everyone had that so

1664
00:55:01,440 --> 00:55:06,559
they weren't you know uh optimally made

1665
00:55:04,400 --> 00:55:09,200
characters my source almost certainly

1666
00:55:06,559 --> 00:55:11,520
was not designed to be a sorcerer or

1667
00:55:09,200 --> 00:55:13,920
or at all he was

1668
00:55:11,520 --> 00:55:15,599
he was mined but then all the other

1669
00:55:13,920 --> 00:55:17,920
characters were like that so you kind of

1670
00:55:15,599 --> 00:55:20,000
had to balance the monster in the

1671
00:55:17,920 --> 00:55:22,160
account so that whereas this time around

1672
00:55:20,000 --> 00:55:24,160
i know a bit more about the you know

1673
00:55:22,160 --> 00:55:25,839
optimization of characters and

1674
00:55:24,160 --> 00:55:28,400
a bit like you uh collaborating with

1675
00:55:25,839 --> 00:55:30,880
your dm people i talk to people from our

1676
00:55:28,400 --> 00:55:32,400
campaign to figure out you know is this

1677
00:55:30,880 --> 00:55:33,440
the better way to do this is this how

1678
00:55:32,400 --> 00:55:35,599
you would do it when you make those

1679
00:55:33,440 --> 00:55:37,119
characters and now you've got a set of

1680
00:55:35,599 --> 00:55:40,079
characters that are

1681
00:55:37,119 --> 00:55:42,000
a lot more efficient in their games

1682
00:55:40,079 --> 00:55:44,240
so you can't just throw a random bunch

1683
00:55:42,000 --> 00:55:46,400
of goblins at us that is likely to kill

1684
00:55:44,240 --> 00:55:48,640
us i mean goblin nearly had me

1685
00:55:46,400 --> 00:55:50,960
yeah every time i met him just one

1686
00:55:48,640 --> 00:55:52,559
second i love by the way how

1687
00:55:50,960 --> 00:55:54,160
novice i was that you were like oh

1688
00:55:52,559 --> 00:55:55,680
there's a random little goblin sat

1689
00:55:54,160 --> 00:55:57,440
playing on the thing and i was like we

1690
00:55:55,680 --> 00:55:58,640
should help him and bring him into our

1691
00:55:57,440 --> 00:56:02,079
party

1692
00:55:58,640 --> 00:56:03,920
why is he attacking me down low what's

1693
00:56:02,079 --> 00:56:06,000
it was like the perfect little trap for

1694
00:56:03,920 --> 00:56:06,960
you so it's it's it's a classic it's a

1695
00:56:06,000 --> 00:56:08,400
classic you know i'm standing on the

1696
00:56:06,960 --> 00:56:11,839
shoulders of the giants there that that

1697
00:56:08,400 --> 00:56:14,160
was not very much not the 100 download

1698
00:56:11,839 --> 00:56:15,200
og content it that is that it's a

1699
00:56:14,160 --> 00:56:19,680
classic

1700
00:56:15,200 --> 00:56:20,799
enemy uh the you know the unassuming

1701
00:56:19,680 --> 00:56:22,880
goblin

1702
00:56:20,799 --> 00:56:24,240
character to then

1703
00:56:22,880 --> 00:56:26,079
i mean he could have very easily killed

1704
00:56:24,240 --> 00:56:28,319
you would have been a very amazing story

1705
00:56:26,079 --> 00:56:30,160
to see how that happened out but in fact

1706
00:56:28,319 --> 00:56:32,480
we're still seeing how that pans out

1707
00:56:30,160 --> 00:56:35,440
without spoiling it for anybody here

1708
00:56:32,480 --> 00:56:36,960
hello hello

1709
00:56:35,440 --> 00:56:38,240
um is there anything that you wanted to

1710
00:56:36,960 --> 00:56:41,280
talk about that we might have missed

1711
00:56:38,240 --> 00:56:42,400
regarding new being new playing a new

1712
00:56:41,280 --> 00:56:44,559
game

1713
00:56:42,400 --> 00:56:46,720
uh i think that

1714
00:56:44,559 --> 00:56:47,839
everyone should try d d

1715
00:56:46,720 --> 00:56:49,520
there are going to be people that listen

1716
00:56:47,839 --> 00:56:52,319
to this podcast that are doing it

1717
00:56:49,520 --> 00:56:53,920
because someone suggested it to them um

1718
00:56:52,319 --> 00:56:56,000
i suggest it to people so they should

1719
00:56:53,920 --> 00:56:58,079
listen to me and try it

1720
00:56:56,000 --> 00:57:00,240
it's just an experience that brings

1721
00:56:58,079 --> 00:57:02,480
people together and you could share you

1722
00:57:00,240 --> 00:57:04,079
know your lower moments in the sessions

1723
00:57:02,480 --> 00:57:06,160
where i wasn't feeling particularly

1724
00:57:04,079 --> 00:57:07,599
great from a rubbish week at work or

1725
00:57:06,160 --> 00:57:08,880
things like that i'd bring that to the

1726
00:57:07,599 --> 00:57:10,319
table and play it out through my

1727
00:57:08,880 --> 00:57:11,520
character but then everyone else was

1728
00:57:10,319 --> 00:57:14,559
there to

1729
00:57:11,520 --> 00:57:17,200
support me and back me up for that week

1730
00:57:14,559 --> 00:57:18,319
from a game side of it it's brilliant

1731
00:57:17,200 --> 00:57:20,559
it's

1732
00:57:18,319 --> 00:57:22,240
mechanically all laid out for you

1733
00:57:20,559 --> 00:57:24,079
and i think that's a that's a huge bonus

1734
00:57:22,240 --> 00:57:25,920
so sometimes when i go and play

1735
00:57:24,079 --> 00:57:27,520
new games i think i now got to learn

1736
00:57:25,920 --> 00:57:28,799
everything like all the controls and

1737
00:57:27,520 --> 00:57:30,079
things like that

1738
00:57:28,799 --> 00:57:31,520
i've got a group of people that around

1739
00:57:30,079 --> 00:57:32,319
me that can

1740
00:57:31,520 --> 00:57:34,079
you know

1741
00:57:32,319 --> 00:57:35,599
help me guide through those those more

1742
00:57:34,079 --> 00:57:37,119
challenging bits

1743
00:57:35,599 --> 00:57:39,119
so yeah it's just an experience that i

1744
00:57:37,119 --> 00:57:41,119
want everybody to to draw and go for

1745
00:57:39,119 --> 00:57:43,280
even my mom and dad now i'm like guys

1746
00:57:41,119 --> 00:57:44,400
you should try that uh you know

1747
00:57:43,280 --> 00:57:46,240
we know people that have played it

1748
00:57:44,400 --> 00:57:47,680
before and they're this type of person

1749
00:57:46,240 --> 00:57:49,599
or they're that type of person i'm like

1750
00:57:47,680 --> 00:57:51,280
that's why you're boring

1751
00:57:49,599 --> 00:57:53,119
you're not willing to just be there and

1752
00:57:51,280 --> 00:57:55,520
be silly for ages you did it when you

1753
00:57:53,119 --> 00:57:56,559
were younger yeah so do it now you're

1754
00:57:55,520 --> 00:57:57,440
older

1755
00:57:56,559 --> 00:57:59,119
yeah

1756
00:57:57,440 --> 00:58:01,440
yeah i do

1757
00:57:59,119 --> 00:58:02,880
there is you know

1758
00:58:01,440 --> 00:58:05,599
certainly a

1759
00:58:02,880 --> 00:58:07,760
stigma and a couple of my more uh

1760
00:58:05,599 --> 00:58:08,799
lady efrain some of which you know met

1761
00:58:07,760 --> 00:58:11,440
um

1762
00:58:08,799 --> 00:58:14,160
are very much like no this is some weird

1763
00:58:11,440 --> 00:58:15,920
nerdy thing that dan lowe does that's

1764
00:58:14,160 --> 00:58:18,559
and i'm not yeah but

1765
00:58:15,920 --> 00:58:20,799
it's still fun

1766
00:58:18,559 --> 00:58:20,799
i can't

1767
00:58:20,839 --> 00:58:25,280
describe definitely laugh which is the

1768
00:58:23,680 --> 00:58:27,040
most important thing

1769
00:58:25,280 --> 00:58:28,400
that's it i think

1770
00:58:27,040 --> 00:58:29,839
cat even said it on the first couple of

1771
00:58:28,400 --> 00:58:32,000
sessions i did it from here she's like i

1772
00:58:29,839 --> 00:58:34,000
haven't heard you laugh like for years

1773
00:58:32,000 --> 00:58:36,930
and i was like that's because

1774
00:58:34,000 --> 00:58:39,119
josh was shagging jack it was brilliant

1775
00:58:36,930 --> 00:58:40,799
[Laughter]

1776
00:58:39,119 --> 00:58:43,359
how can you not

1777
00:58:40,799 --> 00:58:45,920
you know not not on zoom but like the

1778
00:58:43,359 --> 00:58:47,839
characters got into a situation and

1779
00:58:45,920 --> 00:58:49,839
it's so ridiculous it's

1780
00:58:47,839 --> 00:58:52,240
it bubbles up inside you that you can't

1781
00:58:49,839 --> 00:58:53,920
help but you know let it overwhelm you

1782
00:58:52,240 --> 00:58:56,400
and burst out laughing the way you used

1783
00:58:53,920 --> 00:58:58,960
to that's fantastic

1784
00:58:56,400 --> 00:59:02,079
awesome well i think that pretty much uh

1785
00:58:58,960 --> 00:59:05,119
brings us to the end of today's

1786
00:59:02,079 --> 00:59:07,520
somewhat self-indulgent discussion but

1787
00:59:05,119 --> 00:59:09,540
after almost 70 episodes in i think i'm

1788
00:59:07,520 --> 00:59:10,799
allowed some self-indulgence uh

1789
00:59:09,540 --> 00:59:12,480
[Laughter]

1790
00:59:10,799 --> 00:59:14,160
here and there do so professionally and

1791
00:59:12,480 --> 00:59:15,760
like you know what 70 in

1792
00:59:14,160 --> 00:59:17,040
let's let matt come on and have a little

1793
00:59:15,760 --> 00:59:18,880
rant about

1794
00:59:17,040 --> 00:59:19,920
their campaign

1795
00:59:18,880 --> 00:59:21,680
it's a good time because it's a very

1796
00:59:19,920 --> 00:59:23,680
good time to have this discussion as

1797
00:59:21,680 --> 00:59:25,280
well with a new character and

1798
00:59:23,680 --> 00:59:26,559
you know the the experience you have in

1799
00:59:25,280 --> 00:59:29,280
terms of

1800
00:59:26,559 --> 00:59:31,119
other games and other styles of dming i

1801
00:59:29,280 --> 00:59:32,799
know we had an interim dm for a couple

1802
00:59:31,119 --> 00:59:35,280
of sessions in the middle very very

1803
00:59:32,799 --> 00:59:37,359
short form almost blinking you miss it

1804
00:59:35,280 --> 00:59:38,640
kind of thing but in terms of this it's

1805
00:59:37,359 --> 00:59:40,000
it's

1806
00:59:38,640 --> 00:59:42,400
very interesting to see what the future

1807
00:59:40,000 --> 00:59:44,640
holds i think both for the our game but

1808
00:59:42,400 --> 00:59:47,760
also you as a as a player and and your

1809
00:59:44,640 --> 00:59:49,599
new character no absolutely and

1810
00:59:47,760 --> 00:59:50,960
i'm still still got to do some more more

1811
00:59:49,599 --> 00:59:52,960
research ready for next week actually

1812
00:59:50,960 --> 00:59:55,599
i've still got reading and stuff to do

1813
00:59:52,960 --> 00:59:57,119
to to keep it fresh in my mind but it's

1814
00:59:55,599 --> 00:59:58,160
exciting times

1815
00:59:57,119 --> 00:59:59,040
indeed

1816
00:59:58,160 --> 01:00:02,160
uh

1817
00:59:59,040 --> 01:00:03,839
so this is normally and

1818
01:00:02,160 --> 01:00:05,359
uh in contrast to the start of the show

1819
01:00:03,839 --> 01:00:07,440
when i forgot to do the routine thing

1820
01:00:05,359 --> 01:00:09,200
i've now i'm now gonna do the routine

1821
01:00:07,440 --> 01:00:10,240
thing ironically it's not really

1822
01:00:09,200 --> 01:00:12,559
relevant

1823
01:00:10,240 --> 01:00:14,240
uh normally at this point i would say is

1824
01:00:12,559 --> 01:00:16,400
anything you would like to plug or

1825
01:00:14,240 --> 01:00:18,240
promote however

1826
01:00:16,400 --> 01:00:20,240
eagle-eyed listeners

1827
01:00:18,240 --> 01:00:22,240
will know that this is the same master

1828
01:00:20,240 --> 01:00:23,839
who happens to be

1829
01:00:22,240 --> 01:00:25,680
a patron of mine

1830
01:00:23,839 --> 01:00:27,680
so he's already getting a shout out at

1831
01:00:25,680 --> 01:00:31,200
the end of the show anyway so thanks

1832
01:00:27,680 --> 01:00:31,200
everyone listening and good night

1833
01:00:31,760 --> 01:00:35,440
but no as usual uh is there anything you

1834
01:00:34,000 --> 01:00:38,400
would like to

1835
01:00:35,440 --> 01:00:40,559
in in addition or no i'm just gonna keep

1836
01:00:38,400 --> 01:00:42,480
my standard hype man position up listen

1837
01:00:40,559 --> 01:00:45,119
to thinking critically donald does an

1838
01:00:42,480 --> 01:00:47,680
amazing job both on and off the table

1839
01:00:45,119 --> 01:00:50,720
um tell your friends i i certainly do

1840
01:00:47,680 --> 01:00:52,400
and everyone stay safe and

1841
01:00:50,720 --> 01:00:54,799
play d d

1842
01:00:52,400 --> 01:00:56,640
that's me good night i of course i'm

1843
01:00:54,799 --> 01:00:58,319
just going to take the download as an

1844
01:00:56,640 --> 01:01:00,960
amazing job on and off the table as a

1845
01:00:58,319 --> 01:01:02,720
little snippet out of context uh just

1846
01:01:00,960 --> 01:01:03,599
drop it throughout the

1847
01:01:02,720 --> 01:01:04,860
yeah

1848
01:01:03,599 --> 01:01:06,799
completely different voices

1849
01:01:04,860 --> 01:01:08,960
[Laughter]

1850
01:01:06,799 --> 01:01:11,520
just in every podcast someone's like and

1851
01:01:08,960 --> 01:01:15,440
the reason i like to play a dragonborn

1852
01:01:11,520 --> 01:01:15,440
is because download is excellent

1853
01:01:16,079 --> 01:01:20,240
that's marketing 101 like

1854
01:01:20,880 --> 01:01:25,520
so all that is left to say is obviously

1855
01:01:24,160 --> 01:01:27,760
thank you ever so much for joining us

1856
01:01:25,520 --> 01:01:30,480

very fun uh and interesting and and

1858

about stuff that i am have had a hand in

1860
01:01:36,960 --> 01:01:41,040
