Items
This episode features David Weinberger from the Shonen Flop podcast to talk all about introducing magical items into your Dungeons & Dragons campaign. It becomes apparent quickly that David and I run very different games when it comes to dishing out loot, which leads to some interesting discussions! Some DMs, myself included, can display a preciousness towards their campaign; a concern magic items will topple the delicately balanced spinning plates. Turns out, magic items are actually one small piece of a much larger puzzle, and can have as much or as little impact as you want. Should they cause the plates to wobble, well that's a perfect learning opportunity for the DM. An additional concern is the power creep and impact to CR magic items can have, but being aware of this and accommodating with the item and other design can allow you to have interesting and powerful items. We also discuss how items can be used to aid in designing puzzles, which is often tricky as it is! In the same vein, they can also be a vehicle for divine intervention - assisting the PCs to resolve tricky encounters.

00:00:00,080 --> 00:00:05,040
welcome thinkers to season 3 episode 11
2
00:00:02,800 --> 00:00:07,140
of thinking critically today's episode
3
00:00:05,040 --> 00:00:15,610
is items
4
00:00:07,140 --> 00:00:15,780
[Music]
5
00:00:15,610 --> 00:00:20,680
[Applause]
6
00:00:15,780 --> 00:00:20,680
[Music]
7
00:00:25,519 --> 00:00:30,160
and today i'm joined by david from the
8
00:00:28,320 --> 00:00:31,679
shonen flop podcast thank you ever so
9
00:00:30,160 --> 00:00:33,600
much for joining us today david can you
10
00:00:31,679 --> 00:00:34,800
tell us a little bit about yourself
11
00:00:33,600 --> 00:00:36,480
absolutely well first of all thank you
12
00:00:34,800 --> 00:00:37,920
so much dan for having me on the show
13
00:00:36,480 --> 00:00:40,320
i've been looking forward to it i always
14
00:00:37,920 --> 00:00:43,120
love talking about dnd stuff so my show
15
00:00:40,320 --> 00:00:45,440
shonen flop is me my co-host jordan and
16
00:00:43,120 --> 00:00:46,879
a guest where we take a look at some of
17
00:00:45,440 --> 00:00:48,640
the lesser known manga that random
18
00:00:46,879 --> 00:00:50,640
shonen jump for those who may not be
19
00:00:48,640 --> 00:00:53,440
familiar that's where series like one
20
00:00:50,640 --> 00:00:54,960
piece dragon ball z naruto got started
21
00:00:53,440 --> 00:00:56,559
and so we really look at the series that
22
00:00:54,960 --> 00:00:58,399
just didn't make it big including some
23
00:00:56,559 --> 00:01:00,160
serious by some of those major artists
24
00:00:58,399 --> 00:01:01,680
so it's really interesting to see what
25
00:01:00,160 --> 00:01:03,920
they tried before they were able to find
26
00:01:01,680 --> 00:01:05,680
their success or sometimes what
27
00:01:03,920 --> 00:01:08,320
didn't work after their big success
28
00:01:05,680 --> 00:01:10,000
ended mm-hmm amazing yeah well we'll
29
00:01:08,320 --> 00:01:12,080
talk about that a little bit later on
30
00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:14,240
because i'm also into well more anime
31
00:01:12,080 --> 00:01:16,240
than manga but yes uh i now want to talk
32
00:01:14,240 --> 00:01:17,360
about that but no right podcast dnd
33
00:01:16,240 --> 00:01:18,400
right okay
34
00:01:17,360 --> 00:01:21,840
so uh
35
00:01:18,400 --> 00:01:25,680
today's topic is items so what does that
36
00:01:21,840 --> 00:01:27,840
mean to you in the dnd framework so i
37
00:01:25,680 --> 00:01:29,360
really think that items are perhaps one
38
00:01:27,840 --> 00:01:31,520
of the most interesting ways to show
39
00:01:29,360 --> 00:01:32,479
your creativity in dungeons and dragons
40
00:01:31,520 --> 00:01:33,759
and to me
41
00:01:32,479 --> 00:01:35,439
while
42
00:01:33,759 --> 00:01:38,320
to be honest i feel like it's a mature
43
00:01:35,439 --> 00:01:40,400
thing to say it can be humble items or
44
00:01:38,320 --> 00:01:41,759
you know plot but really
45
00:01:40,400 --> 00:01:43,920
really it just means to me what's the
46
00:01:41,759 --> 00:01:45,200
kind of cool [ __ ] you can give players
47
00:01:43,920 --> 00:01:46,720
that gets to change how they interact
48
00:01:45,200 --> 00:01:48,640
with the world and give them agency
49
00:01:46,720 --> 00:01:50,000
mm-hmm yeah i'm gonna
50
00:01:48,640 --> 00:01:51,520
come at you now
51
00:01:50,000 --> 00:01:52,880
i'm coming i'm flying out the gate and
52
00:01:51,520 --> 00:01:55,439
say that
53
00:01:52,880 --> 00:01:57,360
that sounds great but it's like i'm a
54
00:01:55,439 --> 00:01:59,759
stickler for balance so all i'm going to
55
00:01:57,360 --> 00:02:02,079
say is that it's great but it's way
56
00:01:59,759 --> 00:02:04,399
easier said than done or maybe i'm
57
00:02:02,079 --> 00:02:05,840
making a storm and a teacup but
58
00:02:04,399 --> 00:02:07,600
in terms of like
59
00:02:05,840 --> 00:02:08,640
balancing let's start with that then
60
00:02:07,600 --> 00:02:11,039
because it's something that's clearly
61
00:02:08,640 --> 00:02:12,319
right on the on the forefront of of my
62
00:02:11,039 --> 00:02:13,920
brain and
63
00:02:12,319 --> 00:02:16,160
we all know that
64
00:02:13,920 --> 00:02:18,879
combat encounters and and the cr system
65
00:02:16,160 --> 00:02:20,400
is awkward and yankee and
66
00:02:18,879 --> 00:02:22,959
oh yeah you know
67
00:02:20,400 --> 00:02:22,959
i set a
68
00:02:29,280 --> 00:02:32,560
just because i'm in new york
69
00:02:30,959 --> 00:02:34,080
passive aggressive like straight out of
70
00:02:32,560 --> 00:02:35,599
the gate yeah this is how
71
00:02:34,080 --> 00:02:37,840
this is how i antagonize all my guests
72
00:02:35,599 --> 00:02:38,959
uh wonderful wonderful
73
00:02:37,840 --> 00:02:40,879
um
74
00:02:38,959 --> 00:02:42,239
but uh like you know it's very swingy
75
00:02:40,879 --> 00:02:45,200
and difficult then you need a level of
76
00:02:42,239 --> 00:02:48,080
experience because
77
00:02:45,200 --> 00:02:50,879
but at least there are
78
00:02:48,080 --> 00:02:52,080
mathematical rules there are clear-cut
79
00:02:50,879 --> 00:02:54,560
give or take
80
00:02:52,080 --> 00:02:57,200
guidance as to broadly
81
00:02:54,560 --> 00:02:59,840
what should be an okay fight and then
82
00:02:57,200 --> 00:03:02,800
the dm can kind of yeah
83
00:02:59,840 --> 00:03:04,720
muddle his way through but for items
84
00:03:02,800 --> 00:03:06,000
i'm just always so scared that something
85
00:03:04,720 --> 00:03:09,280
i'm gonna give them is just gonna have
86
00:03:06,000 --> 00:03:11,200
such unforeseen power consequences that
87
00:03:09,280 --> 00:03:13,840
it's just gonna screw like really just
88
00:03:11,200 --> 00:03:16,000
take whip the rug out from under my feet
89
00:03:13,840 --> 00:03:18,239
to be honest like i kind of embrace it
90
00:03:16,000 --> 00:03:20,560
so i do like a hundred percent or i
91
00:03:18,239 --> 00:03:22,640
would say 90 improvised campaign and so
92
00:03:20,560 --> 00:03:24,159
part of it is they don't have a campaign
93
00:03:22,640 --> 00:03:26,319
they can really break because there's
94
00:03:24,159 --> 00:03:28,640
nothing i created like for instance
95
00:03:26,319 --> 00:03:30,879
combat encounters i actually don't give
96
00:03:28,640 --> 00:03:32,400
hp to the monsters i just think they die
97
00:03:30,879 --> 00:03:34,560
when it seems like an interesting time
98
00:03:32,400 --> 00:03:36,400
for them to die which means one you
99
00:03:34,560 --> 00:03:38,239
don't have to bookkeep as carefully and
100
00:03:36,400 --> 00:03:40,080
two it means combat is always exciting
101
00:03:38,239 --> 00:03:41,760
because you never get into that kind of
102
00:03:40,080 --> 00:03:44,000
pokemon a stick stage of combat where
103
00:03:41,760 --> 00:03:45,519
the monster effectively is lost but they
104
00:03:44,000 --> 00:03:46,879
still have 100 hp so you have to play
105
00:03:45,519 --> 00:03:48,720
five more turns of combat you can just
106
00:03:46,879 --> 00:03:50,720
have them die yeah or likewise if the
107
00:03:48,720 --> 00:03:52,159
encounter is too hard they don't know
108
00:03:50,720 --> 00:03:54,080
that you just nerfed the creature mid
109
00:03:52,159 --> 00:03:56,239
combat you know
110
00:03:54,080 --> 00:03:57,920
and i play a very high fantasy campaign
111
00:03:56,239 --> 00:03:59,439
where magic is very common the players
112
00:03:57,920 --> 00:04:01,040
have a lot access none of my players
113
00:03:59,439 --> 00:04:03,200
absolutely my most recent campaign had
114
00:04:01,040 --> 00:04:05,280
spell casting abilities which is maybe
115
00:04:03,200 --> 00:04:06,720
why i think items make up for some of
116
00:04:05,280 --> 00:04:08,400
this like for instance none of them knew
117
00:04:06,720 --> 00:04:10,959
any healing magic or utility magic which
118
00:04:08,400 --> 00:04:12,319
definitely made problem solving very
119
00:04:10,959 --> 00:04:14,080
unique so you had to be very
120
00:04:12,319 --> 00:04:15,840
environmental or seed them with items to
121
00:04:14,080 --> 00:04:17,199
solve problems later on
122
00:04:15,840 --> 00:04:18,880
which you kind of reverse engineer based
123
00:04:17,199 --> 00:04:20,639
on what you've given them yeah but
124
00:04:18,880 --> 00:04:22,079
that's what i would say and i can
125
00:04:20,639 --> 00:04:23,520
totally understand how certain campaigns
126
00:04:22,079 --> 00:04:25,199
that breaks it but
127
00:04:23,520 --> 00:04:26,479
yeah they got nothing to break so just
128
00:04:25,199 --> 00:04:27,680
let them have fun with the things you
129
00:04:26,479 --> 00:04:29,919
give them
130
00:04:27,680 --> 00:04:30,800
okay yeah that's that works for the way
131
00:04:29,919 --> 00:04:32,880
that
132
00:04:30,800 --> 00:04:34,880
you certainly run that like improvised
133
00:04:32,880 --> 00:04:36,479
you know no hp for the monsters
134
00:04:34,880 --> 00:04:38,320
absolutely i can see how that would be
135
00:04:36,479 --> 00:04:39,919
less of an issue
136
00:04:38,320 --> 00:04:42,720
and to be fair that's something i need
137
00:04:39,919 --> 00:04:44,880
to be a bit more cognizant of when i'm
138
00:04:42,720 --> 00:04:47,440
like in the middle of combat and my mind
139
00:04:44,880 --> 00:04:49,919
is going a mile a minute i really need
140
00:04:47,440 --> 00:04:51,919
to be like [ __ ] it that monster's dead
141
00:04:49,919 --> 00:04:55,280
just move on even if it does have 100 hp
142
00:04:51,919 --> 00:04:56,800
left because that slog is not fun for
143
00:04:55,280 --> 00:04:59,600
anyone
144
00:04:56,800 --> 00:05:00,880
yeah i i just i honestly think combat is
145
00:04:59,600 --> 00:05:02,720
probably one of the least interesting
146
00:05:00,880 --> 00:05:04,960
parts of d d especially before like
147
00:05:02,720 --> 00:05:06,080
level like five or six
148
00:05:04,960 --> 00:05:07,840
yeah i mean it doesn't really get
149
00:05:06,080 --> 00:05:10,080
exciting as your own character until
150
00:05:07,840 --> 00:05:11,440
five onwards to be honest in terms of
151
00:05:10,080 --> 00:05:14,080
what abilities you've got that you can
152
00:05:11,440 --> 00:05:16,560
do more than once
153
00:05:14,080 --> 00:05:19,199
oh yeah like oh no i'm out of my two
154
00:05:16,560 --> 00:05:21,759
spells i know as a level two wizard yep
155
00:05:19,199 --> 00:05:24,000
i guess i'll stab him with a dagger
156
00:05:21,759 --> 00:05:28,720
great well they do have canter so yeah
157
00:05:24,000 --> 00:05:30,880
3.5 fixed things a bit but yeah yeah so
158
00:05:28,720 --> 00:05:32,160
okay i what i want to i want to bring up
159
00:05:30,880 --> 00:05:34,720
something you mentioned there that was
160
00:05:32,160 --> 00:05:35,919
really really really cool and it was
161
00:05:34,720 --> 00:05:38,800
well actually let me look around for
162
00:05:35,919 --> 00:05:41,120
that so firstly that idea of
163
00:05:38,800 --> 00:05:43,199
backfilling for shortcomings in the
164
00:05:41,120 --> 00:05:45,120
party makeup which is something that
165
00:05:43,199 --> 00:05:47,360
happens you know every every time i see
166
00:05:45,120 --> 00:05:49,759
the post on reddit or facebook some some
167
00:05:47,360 --> 00:05:52,240
new dm saying none of my players and my
168
00:05:49,759 --> 00:05:54,560
new group of have a healer and i'm
169
00:05:52,240 --> 00:05:56,720
thinking about this like it's a
170
00:05:54,560 --> 00:05:57,840
traditional ipg and i need it i need a
171
00:05:56,720 --> 00:06:00,000
heat a
172
00:05:57,840 --> 00:06:01,919
quote healer what do i do god they're
173
00:06:00,000 --> 00:06:03,919
gonna just die straight away um nine
174
00:06:01,919 --> 00:06:05,680
times out of ten the answer is just give
175
00:06:03,919 --> 00:06:08,240
them like a bunch of health potions
176
00:06:05,680 --> 00:06:09,759
somehow or some why that so that is the
177
00:06:08,240 --> 00:06:11,440
the classic
178
00:06:09,759 --> 00:06:12,880
the classic backfill of like they
179
00:06:11,440 --> 00:06:14,639
haven't really got some reliable healing
180
00:06:12,880 --> 00:06:17,120
given some hill potions some benevolent
181
00:06:14,639 --> 00:06:18,560
npcs says ego you take them
182
00:06:17,120 --> 00:06:21,440
what other ones have you employed what
183
00:06:18,560 --> 00:06:23,280
other kind of items that are you know
184
00:06:21,440 --> 00:06:25,120
explicitly for that reason of trying to
185
00:06:23,280 --> 00:06:26,960
plug a gap in the pie
186
00:06:25,120 --> 00:06:28,400
so i think really
187
00:06:26,960 --> 00:06:29,919
the big thing is just look at the
188
00:06:28,400 --> 00:06:31,680
wizard's spell book and look at the
189
00:06:29,919 --> 00:06:33,520
utility spells and that really can tell
190
00:06:31,680 --> 00:06:35,759
you what are the gaps like for instance
191
00:06:33,520 --> 00:06:38,080
feather fall that can prevent you from
192
00:06:35,759 --> 00:06:40,400
accidentally having other players die
193
00:06:38,080 --> 00:06:43,120
you know so stuff like that stuff like
194
00:06:40,400 --> 00:06:44,960
jump detect magic dispel magic that if
195
00:06:43,120 --> 00:06:47,520
you have a party that doesn't have those
196
00:06:44,960 --> 00:06:49,520
spells or if you have players that just
197
00:06:47,520 --> 00:06:51,680
are i guess are very single-minded
198
00:06:49,520 --> 00:06:53,280
those are good spells to look at so just
199
00:06:51,680 --> 00:06:55,199
think like if i was a wizard would spell
200
00:06:53,280 --> 00:06:57,199
what i always want with me and that is a
201
00:06:55,199 --> 00:06:58,880
really easy source of the type of magic
202
00:06:57,199 --> 00:07:00,840
items that you know will have instant
203
00:06:58,880 --> 00:07:04,560
utility for players that aren't spell
204
00:07:00,840 --> 00:07:06,560
casters okay yeah so just like i mean
205
00:07:04,560 --> 00:07:09,360
i'm kind of reticent to spell scrolls
206
00:07:06,560 --> 00:07:11,440
because to me they're kind of boring
207
00:07:09,360 --> 00:07:12,800
although i'm not like freaking anyone
208
00:07:11,440 --> 00:07:14,720
out but like i'm not being like
209
00:07:12,800 --> 00:07:16,960
blasphemous or something but um
210
00:07:14,720 --> 00:07:18,800
that's just like a free spell isn't it
211
00:07:16,960 --> 00:07:20,960
yeah no one likes carrying around books
212
00:07:18,800 --> 00:07:23,520
like her dusty old paper i want to carry
213
00:07:20,960 --> 00:07:25,840
around a mace that shoots lightning like
214
00:07:23,520 --> 00:07:28,319
yeah no you can always add a twist so
215
00:07:25,840 --> 00:07:31,039
like for instance i gave them a feather
216
00:07:28,319 --> 00:07:32,240
that lets them cast feather fall but the
217
00:07:31,039 --> 00:07:34,080
way it works is so you can only use it
218
00:07:32,240 --> 00:07:36,319
once per day but the other thing is you
219
00:07:34,080 --> 00:07:39,120
activate it by saying a word for wind
220
00:07:36,319 --> 00:07:42,479
that you haven't said before so you can
221
00:07:39,120 --> 00:07:45,919
be like zephyr gust tornado hurricane so
222
00:07:42,479 --> 00:07:47,680
the players have to like think of words
223
00:07:45,919 --> 00:07:49,280
and then like if they can't think of you
224
00:07:47,680 --> 00:07:50,879
know a good word
225
00:07:49,280 --> 00:07:53,199
you know they're screwed
226
00:07:50,879 --> 00:07:55,840
and that so that's a very like bland
227
00:07:53,199 --> 00:07:57,440
spell but it adds an interesting meta
228
00:07:55,840 --> 00:07:59,759
twist which is something i always look
229
00:07:57,440 --> 00:08:03,120
forward to is like how do i make these
230
00:07:59,759 --> 00:08:04,000
elements not just i guess interesting at
231
00:08:03,120 --> 00:08:06,639
face
232
00:08:04,000 --> 00:08:08,319
value mm-hmm yeah which is exactly the
233
00:08:06,639 --> 00:08:09,840
problem that i think spell scrolls have
234
00:08:08,319 --> 00:08:11,919
raw is that they're just literally yeah
235
00:08:09,840 --> 00:08:13,440
you can spell you're like oh yeah
236
00:08:11,919 --> 00:08:14,560
there's a wizard we retained a wizard
237
00:08:13,440 --> 00:08:17,199
for two minutes
238
00:08:14,560 --> 00:08:19,199
yeah no i love that idea and now my mind
239
00:08:17,199 --> 00:08:22,400
is now racing trying to think of like
240
00:08:19,199 --> 00:08:24,560
other examples of that of that i'd like
241
00:08:22,400 --> 00:08:26,800
i i guess that's kind of like soft meta
242
00:08:24,560 --> 00:08:29,360
that's not meta in in such a you know a
243
00:08:26,800 --> 00:08:31,360
negative connotation where it's you know
244
00:08:29,360 --> 00:08:33,279
ruining somebody else's fun but it's
245
00:08:31,360 --> 00:08:34,800
just a nice little garnish on the side
246
00:08:33,279 --> 00:08:37,760
of the game just to get the players to
247
00:08:34,800 --> 00:08:39,120
think is is a nice little a nice little
248
00:08:37,760 --> 00:08:40,640
touch
249
00:08:39,120 --> 00:08:42,320
although if i was that player i'd make
250
00:08:40,640 --> 00:08:44,399
i'd get my thesaurus out the moment i
251
00:08:42,320 --> 00:08:47,120
had that i just uh
252
00:08:44,399 --> 00:08:48,560
yeah i i i i'm taking a break from now
253
00:08:47,120 --> 00:08:50,000
but i actually did a word of the day in
254
00:08:48,560 --> 00:08:51,519
the shonen flop discord where we had a
255
00:08:50,000 --> 00:08:54,000
channel where i just posted it every day
256
00:08:51,519 --> 00:08:55,440
so yeah i uh i had words so i was like
257
00:08:54,000 --> 00:08:56,720
seeing if they paid attention to the
258
00:08:55,440 --> 00:08:58,640
word of the day because i would use them
259
00:08:56,720 --> 00:09:01,040
sometimes uh-huh like zephyr zephyr is a
260
00:08:58,640 --> 00:09:03,360
great vocabulary word yes yeah for that
261
00:09:01,040 --> 00:09:04,880
there's a there's a zephyr strike is one
262
00:09:03,360 --> 00:09:06,800
of the newer spells in one of the new
263
00:09:04,880 --> 00:09:08,640
books that's uh meant to be uh pretty
264
00:09:06,800 --> 00:09:09,680
decent so uh
265
00:09:08,640 --> 00:09:11,760
yeah i just made me think of that for
266
00:09:09,680 --> 00:09:12,400
some reason um i think it's my favorite
267
00:09:11,760 --> 00:09:13,920
hangman word
268
00:09:12,400 --> 00:09:15,360
[Laughter]
269
00:09:13,920 --> 00:09:17,040
now if i were trying to spell it off the
270
00:09:15,360 --> 00:09:19,279
top of my head i wouldn't even attempt
271
00:09:17,040 --> 00:09:21,120
it but uh yeah i'm just looking up how
272
00:09:19,279 --> 00:09:24,959
to spell yeah yo
273
00:09:21,120 --> 00:09:27,279
z e p and you're like what
274
00:09:24,959 --> 00:09:30,080
sarah y in that word yes there's an ah a
275
00:09:27,279 --> 00:09:31,360
couple of r's maybe a couple of y's just
276
00:09:30,080 --> 00:09:32,480
throw them against the wall and see what
277
00:09:31,360 --> 00:09:33,920
fits yeah
278
00:09:32,480 --> 00:09:34,880
yeah exactly
279
00:09:33,920 --> 00:09:37,600
um
280
00:09:34,880 --> 00:09:40,399
and the the the other thing there
281
00:09:37,600 --> 00:09:42,480
that you mentioned was
282
00:09:40,399 --> 00:09:44,640
kind of like retroactively designing
283
00:09:42,480 --> 00:09:46,880
puzzles off of items you've given them
284
00:09:44,640 --> 00:09:49,519
and yes that is not something i've heard
285
00:09:46,880 --> 00:09:51,120
before in terms of like always
286
00:09:49,519 --> 00:09:53,279
any time i've talked about puzzle design
287
00:09:51,120 --> 00:09:54,959
i read about puzzle design even in uh
288
00:09:53,279 --> 00:09:58,240
you know tasha's cauldron of everything
289
00:09:54,959 --> 00:09:59,200
it's always in isolation it's always
290
00:09:58,240 --> 00:10:00,800
like
291
00:09:59,200 --> 00:10:02,000
there's this room that the players could
292
00:10:00,800 --> 00:10:03,600
come into and you could put this room
293
00:10:02,000 --> 00:10:06,240
anywhere and here's the puzzle and
294
00:10:03,600 --> 00:10:08,560
that's that's it but in terms of like
295
00:10:06,240 --> 00:10:10,480
they pick up some doll from
296
00:10:08,560 --> 00:10:12,560
somewhere and then 10 sessions later
297
00:10:10,480 --> 00:10:14,480
it's it's useful i've not come at it
298
00:10:12,560 --> 00:10:16,640
that way so have you got any examples of
299
00:10:14,480 --> 00:10:18,560
that process that train of thought so
300
00:10:16,640 --> 00:10:20,079
that's a really good question
301
00:10:18,560 --> 00:10:21,760
i'm trying to think just because yeah to
302
00:10:20,079 --> 00:10:22,720
be honest the puzzles definitely are a
303
00:10:21,760 --> 00:10:24,720
challenge
304
00:10:22,720 --> 00:10:26,240
and i think more so it's not like you
305
00:10:24,720 --> 00:10:28,320
need the item to solve the puzzle it
306
00:10:26,240 --> 00:10:29,760
just gives you an easier path or maybe
307
00:10:28,320 --> 00:10:31,839
gives you scaffolding on the puzzle
308
00:10:29,760 --> 00:10:33,120
where it solves some of the initial
309
00:10:31,839 --> 00:10:35,360
stages so
310
00:10:33,120 --> 00:10:36,560
for instance i'm just trying to think of
311
00:10:35,360 --> 00:10:38,399
a good example because that's such a
312
00:10:36,560 --> 00:10:40,240
good question so i'm just thinking back
313
00:10:38,399 --> 00:10:41,680
on the puzzle oh so
314
00:10:40,240 --> 00:10:43,519
so this is going to be a really dumb
315
00:10:41,680 --> 00:10:45,519
example but my players were given
316
00:10:43,519 --> 00:10:47,680
something called fairy flurry which they
317
00:10:45,519 --> 00:10:49,680
were in fantasy hollywood so it was
318
00:10:47,680 --> 00:10:52,399
essentially cocaine and they were having
319
00:10:49,680 --> 00:10:55,040
to answer riddles and they just
320
00:10:52,399 --> 00:10:57,760
bribed the real master with cocaine so
321
00:10:55,040 --> 00:11:00,240
he would drop some of the riddles
322
00:10:57,760 --> 00:11:02,000
so that was they didn't need cocaine to
323
00:11:00,240 --> 00:11:03,600
solve the riddles but it meant that it
324
00:11:02,000 --> 00:11:05,839
dropped some of the challenge of that
325
00:11:03,600 --> 00:11:08,079
because he just gave they just gave him
326
00:11:05,839 --> 00:11:11,120
cocaine itself answering the last riddle
327
00:11:08,079 --> 00:11:13,200
had you foreseen that at all no i did
328
00:11:11,120 --> 00:11:14,640
not but i was like yeah i mean that's
329
00:11:13,200 --> 00:11:15,920
the thing is you got to reward players
330
00:11:14,640 --> 00:11:17,920
because when you're giving them items
331
00:11:15,920 --> 00:11:19,519
that aren't clearly specifically defined
332
00:11:17,920 --> 00:11:20,959
which you don't want to do
333
00:11:19,519 --> 00:11:22,399
you know you don't want items that
334
00:11:20,959 --> 00:11:23,839
literally they're going to have a very
335
00:11:22,399 --> 00:11:25,839
specific purpose and are not useful
336
00:11:23,839 --> 00:11:26,800
because d d should be a sandbox for the
337
00:11:25,839 --> 00:11:28,560
players
338
00:11:26,800 --> 00:11:29,920
and so that's what you do is your reward
339
00:11:28,560 --> 00:11:31,760
sometimes they get an easy win because
340
00:11:29,920 --> 00:11:34,560
they remember it's like you know if you
341
00:11:31,760 --> 00:11:36,399
gave an item that's like an electric
342
00:11:34,560 --> 00:11:37,920
containment bottle because you thought
343
00:11:36,399 --> 00:11:39,120
oh they could use this it's like a power
344
00:11:37,920 --> 00:11:40,160
source and then they fight a lightning
345
00:11:39,120 --> 00:11:41,839
element and someone says i'm going to
346
00:11:40,160 --> 00:11:44,399
try and shove them in the bottle and you
347
00:11:41,839 --> 00:11:46,320
that just defeats like a cr5 rating and
348
00:11:44,399 --> 00:11:47,600
a turn because they rolled like an 18 on
349
00:11:46,320 --> 00:11:48,959
their strength check
350
00:11:47,600 --> 00:11:50,639
you should reward them for that for
351
00:11:48,959 --> 00:11:52,079
thinking creatively
352
00:11:50,639 --> 00:11:53,279
and then you know in the future hey we
353
00:11:52,079 --> 00:11:55,600
shouldn't probably have them fighting
354
00:11:53,279 --> 00:11:57,600
electrical elementals
355
00:11:55,600 --> 00:11:59,040
you know yeah or maybe you do and then
356
00:11:57,600 --> 00:12:00,320
it tries and then you come up with a
357
00:11:59,040 --> 00:12:01,519
clever reason why it doesn't work that
358
00:12:00,320 --> 00:12:03,279
time
359
00:12:01,519 --> 00:12:05,040
which also is in our way is if they get
360
00:12:03,279 --> 00:12:07,040
over reliance on items rather than
361
00:12:05,040 --> 00:12:08,320
destroying the items or nerfing them
362
00:12:07,040 --> 00:12:10,720
which you know sometimes you still have
363
00:12:08,320 --> 00:12:12,320
to but thinking of when are the times
364
00:12:10,720 --> 00:12:13,600
where you could say hey this isn't
365
00:12:12,320 --> 00:12:15,200
always going to work this isn't the
366
00:12:13,600 --> 00:12:16,959
silver bullet you think because that's
367
00:12:15,200 --> 00:12:18,000
much more rewarding and says oh well
368
00:12:16,959 --> 00:12:19,760
then there has to be a different
369
00:12:18,000 --> 00:12:20,720
solution if the obvious solution doesn't
370
00:12:19,760 --> 00:12:22,240
work
371
00:12:20,720 --> 00:12:24,079
which kind of makes me think a little
372
00:12:22,240 --> 00:12:26,560
bit about one piece if you're familiar
373
00:12:24,079 --> 00:12:28,320
with that series the manga in that a lot
374
00:12:26,560 --> 00:12:30,160
of the encounters generally have like a
375
00:12:28,320 --> 00:12:31,760
very obvious solution and then he makes
376
00:12:30,160 --> 00:12:34,000
sure to show why the obvious solution
377
00:12:31,760 --> 00:12:35,600
doesn't work so you have to think of a
378
00:12:34,000 --> 00:12:38,240
second solution which kind of challenges
379
00:12:35,600 --> 00:12:40,079
the reader to really think of what else
380
00:12:38,240 --> 00:12:41,920
is available as a resource for solving a
381
00:12:40,079 --> 00:12:45,440
puzzle oh and you know trying to
382
00:12:41,920 --> 00:12:47,279
overcome someone's ability um oh man i'm
383
00:12:45,440 --> 00:12:49,519
scared that like all my puzzles are just
384
00:12:47,279 --> 00:12:51,680
[ __ ] now like they're the few i've had
385
00:12:49,519 --> 00:12:54,320
and used uh
386
00:12:51,680 --> 00:12:56,639
out of almost fear of creating something
387
00:12:54,320 --> 00:12:57,920
that's a bit crap uh yeah sometimes when
388
00:12:56,639 --> 00:12:59,760
i want a break i just park them in front
389
00:12:57,920 --> 00:13:00,180
of a sudoku puzzle and give them 15
390
00:12:59,760 --> 00:13:02,160
minutes
391
00:13:00,180 --> 00:13:04,000
[Laughter]
392
00:13:02,160 --> 00:13:06,240
go to the toilet make your dinner like
393
00:13:04,000 --> 00:13:07,060
yeah you know
394
00:13:06,240 --> 00:13:09,519
have a break
395
00:13:07,060 --> 00:13:11,360
[Laughter]
396
00:13:09,519 --> 00:13:13,760
i think this is this is good i'm glad
397
00:13:11,360 --> 00:13:15,680
that i have have you to talk about items
398
00:13:13,760 --> 00:13:17,600
because i can already tell that we
399
00:13:15,680 --> 00:13:19,440
approached the topic from from slightly
400
00:13:17,600 --> 00:13:22,399
different points uh which should make
401
00:13:19,440 --> 00:13:25,360
for a very interesting discussion
402
00:13:22,399 --> 00:13:27,440
so to loot back around then
403
00:13:25,360 --> 00:13:30,320
here's the reasons why i want and i
404
00:13:27,440 --> 00:13:32,079
wouldn't use that example you gave of
405
00:13:30,320 --> 00:13:34,240
fighting the electric elementals and
406
00:13:32,079 --> 00:13:34,959
maybe one of them uses some you know imx
407
00:13:34,240 --> 00:13:37,839
to
408
00:13:34,959 --> 00:13:39,680
essentially mitigate it completely
409
00:13:37,839 --> 00:13:41,920
and it's not that
410
00:13:39,680 --> 00:13:44,639
i'm precious about that encounter it's
411
00:13:41,920 --> 00:13:46,959
not that well they i set up a fight they
412
00:13:44,639 --> 00:13:48,560
have to have that fight because i set up
413
00:13:46,959 --> 00:13:49,760
a whole bunch of stuff and
414
00:13:48,560 --> 00:13:50,959
if they choose to fight they choose to
415
00:13:49,760 --> 00:13:52,560
fight and if they don't they don't and
416
00:13:50,959 --> 00:13:54,480
that's fine that's the nature of the
417
00:13:52,560 --> 00:13:58,800
game to me so it's not that i'm worried
418
00:13:54,480 --> 00:13:59,839
about it's more that for example for one
419
00:13:58,800 --> 00:14:01,440
example
420
00:13:59,839 --> 00:14:03,880
is perhaps there's another person in the
421
00:14:01,440 --> 00:14:05,839
party who is an
422
00:14:03,880 --> 00:14:08,320
anti-elementalist or you know someone
423
00:14:05,839 --> 00:14:10,480
who can banish or has
424
00:14:08,320 --> 00:14:14,320
you know is strong against electricity
425
00:14:10,480 --> 00:14:16,320
creatures and then the gnome rogue rolls
426
00:14:14,320 --> 00:14:17,839
that one check and immediately defeats
427
00:14:16,320 --> 00:14:19,600
this thing like it's a ranger's favored
428
00:14:17,839 --> 00:14:21,600
foe or something and the range is like
429
00:14:19,600 --> 00:14:23,600
stand back i'll kill this thing and then
430
00:14:21,600 --> 00:14:25,440
someone else just goes boop no i did it
431
00:14:23,600 --> 00:14:27,920
you're kind of useless now
432
00:14:25,440 --> 00:14:29,600
that that is the stuff i
433
00:14:27,920 --> 00:14:32,160
get worried about because that other
434
00:14:29,600 --> 00:14:34,800
player then feels very you know impotent
435
00:14:32,160 --> 00:14:36,639
almost i mean i think you should embrace
436
00:14:34,800 --> 00:14:38,320
that because again that's the thing is
437
00:14:36,639 --> 00:14:39,760
that you don't want to make them think
438
00:14:38,320 --> 00:14:41,360
that they're over reliant on the tool so
439
00:14:39,760 --> 00:14:43,760
that means you're actually getting a
440
00:14:41,360 --> 00:14:44,639
reward as a tm for having it not work
441
00:14:43,760 --> 00:14:45,839
twice
442
00:14:44,639 --> 00:14:47,199
so think about it you could have it
443
00:14:45,839 --> 00:14:48,720
where they deal one elemental but what
444
00:14:47,199 --> 00:14:50,000
if they deal with two and they can only
445
00:14:48,720 --> 00:14:52,240
shove one in the bottle who's going to
446
00:14:50,000 --> 00:14:53,839
take care of the second one and say ah
447
00:14:52,240 --> 00:14:56,000
you know i found a weakness in what you
448
00:14:53,839 --> 00:14:58,800
did last time now is my time to shine so
449
00:14:56,000 --> 00:15:00,880
i don't think it's quite as big a deal
450
00:14:58,800 --> 00:15:02,560
um as you might consider
451
00:15:00,880 --> 00:15:04,639
just because it actually can set you up
452
00:15:02,560 --> 00:15:06,480
to strength show the strengths even if
453
00:15:04,639 --> 00:15:08,399
at first glance it seems like though the
454
00:15:06,480 --> 00:15:10,560
items given are are hiding their
455
00:15:08,399 --> 00:15:12,240
abilities yeah and don't don't please
456
00:15:10,560 --> 00:15:13,519
don't pull any punches one of the
457
00:15:12,240 --> 00:15:15,199
reasons for the show is i'm i'm here to
458
00:15:13,519 --> 00:15:17,360
learn as well so if you want to if you
459
00:15:15,199 --> 00:15:19,440
tell me some ideas cocker maybe then
460
00:15:17,360 --> 00:15:20,959
please do but i don't know i think you
461
00:15:19,440 --> 00:15:22,639
have a very because these are definitely
462
00:15:20,959 --> 00:15:24,480
trappings that less experienced dms
463
00:15:22,639 --> 00:15:25,920
could fall into where they just have a
464
00:15:24,480 --> 00:15:27,839
solution and they just do the same
465
00:15:25,920 --> 00:15:29,759
solution to every single time because
466
00:15:27,839 --> 00:15:30,800
you know it i'm the players might get
467
00:15:29,759 --> 00:15:31,920
bored but they'll still be happy at
468
00:15:30,800 --> 00:15:34,959
least for the start that they're just
469
00:15:31,920 --> 00:15:37,279
solving these problems yeah yeah and i'm
470
00:15:34,959 --> 00:15:38,320
having an epiphany as we speak by the
471
00:15:37,279 --> 00:15:41,040
way because
472
00:15:38,320 --> 00:15:43,360
so many times on this show
473
00:15:41,040 --> 00:15:44,880
we've discussed you know like players
474
00:15:43,360 --> 00:15:47,279
having you know their characters having
475
00:15:44,880 --> 00:15:49,759
faults and and that learning from their
476
00:15:47,279 --> 00:15:51,120
mistakes and thinking outside the box
477
00:15:49,759 --> 00:15:53,360
and you know
478
00:15:51,120 --> 00:15:55,440
leading into your the drawbacks of your
479
00:15:53,360 --> 00:15:58,000
particular character and never once have
480
00:15:55,440 --> 00:15:59,759
i really stepped back and thought
481
00:15:58,000 --> 00:16:02,639
how can you apply that train of thought
482
00:15:59,759 --> 00:16:05,279
to being a dm and you've just given a
483
00:16:02,639 --> 00:16:06,959
really good example there of of like ah
484
00:16:05,279 --> 00:16:10,639
this has gone
485
00:16:06,959 --> 00:16:11,759
sideways uh for a reason i didn't
486
00:16:10,639 --> 00:16:16,000
foresee
487
00:16:11,759 --> 00:16:17,600
but here's how i can leverage that as a
488
00:16:16,000 --> 00:16:19,199
yeah as a it's almost like the job of
489
00:16:17,600 --> 00:16:20,880
the dm in a way to leverage those
490
00:16:19,199 --> 00:16:22,480
sideways moments rather than just leave
491
00:16:20,880 --> 00:16:24,800
them in isolation and just be like well
492
00:16:22,480 --> 00:16:26,000
that was a one-off event oh god i hope
493
00:16:24,800 --> 00:16:27,440
that doesn't happen again it should be
494
00:16:26,000 --> 00:16:29,040
no that's that's
495
00:16:27,440 --> 00:16:30,880
that's the learning opportunity there
496
00:16:29,040 --> 00:16:33,279
and i i harp on about learning
497
00:16:30,880 --> 00:16:35,519
opportunities for players and i've not
498
00:16:33,279 --> 00:16:37,519
once really you know stepped back and
499
00:16:35,519 --> 00:16:38,880
looked at myself to be like give it
500
00:16:37,519 --> 00:16:40,560
down like you got to learn it sometimes
501
00:16:38,880 --> 00:16:42,320
well
502
00:16:40,560 --> 00:16:43,839
yeah i mean that's the thing is that the
503
00:16:42,320 --> 00:16:45,600
players don't know what you're planning
504
00:16:43,839 --> 00:16:47,279
so you can really change anything you
505
00:16:45,600 --> 00:16:49,680
want or you can make seem like anything
506
00:16:47,279 --> 00:16:51,440
is on purpose
507
00:16:49,680 --> 00:16:52,880
that's the magic of it it's like how
508
00:16:51,440 --> 00:16:54,320
modularity is probably the most
509
00:16:52,880 --> 00:16:56,079
important thing that really takes a
510
00:16:54,320 --> 00:16:58,560
beginner gm to an intermediate dm is
511
00:16:56,079 --> 00:17:00,639
learning i can just reuse any ideas i
512
00:16:58,560 --> 00:17:02,320
had i don't have to railroad they don't
513
00:17:00,639 --> 00:17:04,000
know that just because they skipped a
514
00:17:02,320 --> 00:17:05,600
room they don't know what was in that
515
00:17:04,000 --> 00:17:07,360
room i can literally have it that the
516
00:17:05,600 --> 00:17:08,559
next dungeon they're in i reused the
517
00:17:07,360 --> 00:17:09,600
puzzle that was in the room they skipped
518
00:17:08,559 --> 00:17:10,640
because how would they know what they
519
00:17:09,600 --> 00:17:12,559
skipped
520
00:17:10,640 --> 00:17:15,199
yeah yeah i mean i've done a warrenis
521
00:17:12,559 --> 00:17:18,160
kobold dungeon and they went to about
522
00:17:15,199 --> 00:17:19,520
55 of it and funnily enough missed on
523
00:17:18,160 --> 00:17:20,959
magic items
524
00:17:19,520 --> 00:17:22,079
oh that's always fun and uh actually in
525
00:17:20,959 --> 00:17:24,319
the previous dungeon as well they
526
00:17:22,079 --> 00:17:26,720
skipped they missed a room at the end as
527
00:17:24,319 --> 00:17:28,319
well now i don't want to encourage like
528
00:17:26,720 --> 00:17:30,160
a completionist attitude because then
529
00:17:28,319 --> 00:17:32,400
that would be a bit boring and a bit bit
530
00:17:30,160 --> 00:17:34,720
tropey but both major dungeons in a row
531
00:17:32,400 --> 00:17:36,720
they've skipped areas and both happened
532
00:17:34,720 --> 00:17:38,799
to have magical items in
533
00:17:36,720 --> 00:17:40,080
and then one of them did say oh you
534
00:17:38,799 --> 00:17:41,919
don't have a lot of magical items down
535
00:17:40,080 --> 00:17:44,799
low and well
536
00:17:41,919 --> 00:17:46,559
there were rooms you didn't go into yeah
537
00:17:44,799 --> 00:17:47,840
a little bit behind the screen maybe
538
00:17:46,559 --> 00:17:48,960
more than i should have done but i was
539
00:17:47,840 --> 00:17:50,720
like well you know you never you never
540
00:17:48,960 --> 00:17:52,720
know they could be thicker yeah there
541
00:17:50,720 --> 00:17:55,360
could be less stuff
542
00:17:52,720 --> 00:17:56,640
but um yes they've skipped yeah whole
543
00:17:55,360 --> 00:17:59,039
rooms before which there was there was
544
00:17:56,640 --> 00:18:01,600
an item a special poison dagger i think
545
00:17:59,039 --> 00:18:03,200
in a cardboard dungeon that was fitting
546
00:18:01,600 --> 00:18:05,200
and that would have been for the rogue i
547
00:18:03,200 --> 00:18:06,240
had intended it you know a good a good
548
00:18:05,200 --> 00:18:07,840
fit
549
00:18:06,240 --> 00:18:09,600
but yeah they didn't they didn't go that
550
00:18:07,840 --> 00:18:11,280
way no that's a shame it doesn't have it
551
00:18:09,600 --> 00:18:12,080
uh i mean obviously as you've just said
552
00:18:11,280 --> 00:18:14,080
like
553
00:18:12,080 --> 00:18:15,840
the chances are they'll be you'll get an
554
00:18:14,080 --> 00:18:17,840
opportunity to buy it or it will turn up
555
00:18:15,840 --> 00:18:20,320
somewhere else of course but the the
556
00:18:17,840 --> 00:18:21,919
mystery of what what they left behind is
557
00:18:20,320 --> 00:18:25,120
something which i think is
558
00:18:21,919 --> 00:18:28,320
really special about dnd it's so easy to
559
00:18:25,120 --> 00:18:32,320
so i'm playing um tales of a rise now on
560
00:18:28,320 --> 00:18:33,200
um playstation the jrpg video game yeah
561
00:18:32,320 --> 00:18:34,960
and
562
00:18:33,200 --> 00:18:37,440
that is
563
00:18:34,960 --> 00:18:39,679
like anytime you go into a new area
564
00:18:37,440 --> 00:18:41,760
you can see the whole map for that area
565
00:18:39,679 --> 00:18:44,160
and often places only have one entrance
566
00:18:41,760 --> 00:18:45,600
and one exit so any paths which don't
567
00:18:44,160 --> 00:18:47,120
lead to an exit
568
00:18:45,600 --> 00:18:48,480
there's an item down
569
00:18:47,120 --> 00:18:49,360
so it's it's
570
00:18:48,480 --> 00:18:50,720
not
571
00:18:49,360 --> 00:18:52,640
you know it's just like oh okay i guess
572
00:18:50,720 --> 00:18:54,480
i'll go there first and sure enough
573
00:18:52,640 --> 00:18:57,600
there's some items so it's kind of like
574
00:18:54,480 --> 00:18:59,440
there's no real mystery or exploration
575
00:18:57,600 --> 00:19:01,280
because you know where everything is you
576
00:18:59,440 --> 00:19:02,720
guarantee that there's some kind of item
577
00:19:01,280 --> 00:19:04,240
for you at the end of that corridor that
578
00:19:02,720 --> 00:19:05,360
doesn't have an exit and the exit takes
579
00:19:04,240 --> 00:19:07,200
you on to the next area where you do the
580
00:19:05,360 --> 00:19:09,200
same thing again for sure so i love that
581
00:19:07,200 --> 00:19:10,880
in you know dnd you can have those i
582
00:19:09,200 --> 00:19:11,919
don't know i don't have a map
583
00:19:10,880 --> 00:19:13,360
nine times out of ten they probably
584
00:19:11,919 --> 00:19:15,200
won't have a map i don't know where the
585
00:19:13,360 --> 00:19:17,360
items are and i'll just
586
00:19:15,200 --> 00:19:18,720
have to make do with with what happens
587
00:19:17,360 --> 00:19:20,480
but um
588
00:19:18,720 --> 00:19:23,760
talking about uh i'm gonna shoot my own
589
00:19:20,480 --> 00:19:24,799
trumpet for a bit but uh such is life
590
00:19:23,760 --> 00:19:26,720
about
591
00:19:24,799 --> 00:19:28,480
the modularity and the thinking on your
592
00:19:26,720 --> 00:19:32,799
feet and
593
00:19:28,480 --> 00:19:34,320
there was a good example of that and
594
00:19:32,799 --> 00:19:36,320
i'm mid
595
00:19:34,320 --> 00:19:38,400
i'm conceiving ideas for today's
596
00:19:36,320 --> 00:19:40,640
discussion in the in the middle of it oh
597
00:19:38,400 --> 00:19:41,919
you're giving idea fat birth
598
00:19:40,640 --> 00:19:43,360
um
599
00:19:41,919 --> 00:19:44,720
npcs
600
00:19:43,360 --> 00:19:45,919
can
601
00:19:44,720 --> 00:19:47,120
act as
602
00:19:45,919 --> 00:19:48,880
you know you can think about them in the
603
00:19:47,120 --> 00:19:50,480
same way you think about items that was
604
00:19:48,880 --> 00:19:53,760
the second epiphany i've had in the last
605
00:19:50,480 --> 00:19:55,440
21 minutes um and the reason i just
606
00:19:53,760 --> 00:19:57,600
thought of that is because in the epi in
607
00:19:55,440 --> 00:19:59,440
the session i just ran actually
608
00:19:57,600 --> 00:20:01,039
there's a big flying elven city up in
609
00:19:59,440 --> 00:20:02,559
the sky thousands of kilometers above
610
00:20:01,039 --> 00:20:03,840
them like dalaran from world of warcraft
611
00:20:02,559 --> 00:20:05,520
i'll pretend i know what a kilometer is
612
00:20:03,840 --> 00:20:07,120
but yeah
613
00:20:05,520 --> 00:20:08,720
it's like 20 feet right yeah yeah just
614
00:20:07,120 --> 00:20:11,360
just like a head height yeah
615
00:20:08,720 --> 00:20:12,640
very very high up in the clouds um and
616
00:20:11,360 --> 00:20:13,919
they're you know on the ground
617
00:20:12,640 --> 00:20:16,320
underneath them they're working on the
618
00:20:13,919 --> 00:20:18,320
gravity elevator blah blah elven magic
619
00:20:16,320 --> 00:20:19,679
stuff to go to lift themselves back up
620
00:20:18,320 --> 00:20:22,080
to the city
621
00:20:19,679 --> 00:20:24,400
the city is currently a bit you know
622
00:20:22,080 --> 00:20:25,840
being a bit lovecraftian
623
00:20:24,400 --> 00:20:28,000
explosions happened and there's
624
00:20:25,840 --> 00:20:31,039
aberrations and creatures and it's
625
00:20:28,000 --> 00:20:32,240
starting to break and fall apart and and
626
00:20:31,039 --> 00:20:33,440
there's all sorts of horrible stuff
627
00:20:32,240 --> 00:20:35,440
happening so as they were down on the
628
00:20:33,440 --> 00:20:38,559
ground floor tinkering away on the on
629
00:20:35,440 --> 00:20:40,880
the panel to fix the gravity elevator
630
00:20:38,559 --> 00:20:43,120
i say to the the super perceptive rogue
631
00:20:40,880 --> 00:20:45,360
who has a robe of eyes never say i don't
632
00:20:43,120 --> 00:20:46,159
give him anything um who has a rope of
633
00:20:45,360 --> 00:20:48,400
eyes
634
00:20:46,159 --> 00:20:50,400
um i was like you see a little black
635
00:20:48,400 --> 00:20:51,520
dot high above you seem to be getting
636
00:20:50,400 --> 00:20:53,280
bigger
637
00:20:51,520 --> 00:20:54,320
and to cut a long story short it was
638
00:20:53,280 --> 00:20:55,919
some it
639
00:20:54,320 --> 00:20:56,960
it was someone falling
640
00:20:55,919 --> 00:20:58,240
from
641
00:20:56,960 --> 00:21:01,200
the city
642
00:20:58,240 --> 00:21:03,120
now my play is being paranoid
643
00:21:01,200 --> 00:21:04,799
fighters all the time he was like are
644
00:21:03,120 --> 00:21:07,600
ready my crossbow to shoot it if it's
645
00:21:04,799 --> 00:21:08,720
coming towards us i'm not okay that's
646
00:21:07,600 --> 00:21:10,159
fine
647
00:21:08,720 --> 00:21:11,600
uh until eventually it got a bit closer
648
00:21:10,159 --> 00:21:14,320
and i was like yeah and you can hear the
649
00:21:11,600 --> 00:21:16,240
screaming and that was pretty much
650
00:21:14,320 --> 00:21:17,760
as much as i'd planned with that
651
00:21:16,240 --> 00:21:20,080
interaction i was like someone's gonna
652
00:21:17,760 --> 00:21:21,760
fool and i imagine they'll just let them
653
00:21:20,080 --> 00:21:23,200
die because my players are sometimes
654
00:21:21,760 --> 00:21:24,880
like that yeah yeah that's life
655
00:21:23,200 --> 00:21:27,360
sometimes have a player die once in a
656
00:21:24,880 --> 00:21:29,120
while but uh no they they ended up
657
00:21:27,360 --> 00:21:31,679
rescuing the npc through some very
658
00:21:29,120 --> 00:21:33,760
hilarious portal mechanics of
659
00:21:31,679 --> 00:21:36,000
dimension door and and saving them and
660
00:21:33,760 --> 00:21:37,600
stuff and after a period of you know
661
00:21:36,000 --> 00:21:40,000
shock where they were like i was just
662
00:21:37,600 --> 00:21:43,039
about to die and now i'm saved by a
663
00:21:40,000 --> 00:21:45,039
group of six crazy creatures that are
664
00:21:43,039 --> 00:21:46,960
shooting fireballs and stuff
665
00:21:45,039 --> 00:21:49,840
basically that was their
666
00:21:46,960 --> 00:21:52,159
exposition machine to say oh [ __ ]
667
00:21:49,840 --> 00:21:54,000
don't man the city's crazy right now
668
00:21:52,159 --> 00:21:55,679
you'd be crazy to want to go there and
669
00:21:54,000 --> 00:21:57,039
then they're like ah we were just about
670
00:21:55,679 --> 00:21:59,600
to head up
671
00:21:57,039 --> 00:22:01,840
so this emphasis is like nah don't
672
00:21:59,600 --> 00:22:03,600
you don't do that there's all sorts of
673
00:22:01,840 --> 00:22:05,360
creatures flying around and throwing
674
00:22:03,600 --> 00:22:09,120
people off the roofs and and all that
675
00:22:05,360 --> 00:22:10,080
kind of stuff so that was i guess
676
00:22:09,120 --> 00:22:11,360
i mean that embassy was quite
677
00:22:10,080 --> 00:22:12,960
two-dimensional
678
00:22:11,360 --> 00:22:14,159
but they served a very similar person
679
00:22:12,960 --> 00:22:18,159
that could have been achieved through an
680
00:22:14,159 --> 00:22:20,159
item and yeah i kind of like that
681
00:22:18,159 --> 00:22:21,600
it's a bit reductive in a way to you
682
00:22:20,159 --> 00:22:23,039
know there's more benefits to
683
00:22:21,600 --> 00:22:24,400
differentiating between the two but
684
00:22:23,039 --> 00:22:25,600
sometimes
685
00:22:24,400 --> 00:22:27,120
i guess what i'm getting at sometimes
686
00:22:25,600 --> 00:22:29,280
when you think oh an item might be good
687
00:22:27,120 --> 00:22:31,919
maybe you know a book falls from the
688
00:22:29,280 --> 00:22:33,840
city and they go oh this book has fallen
689
00:22:31,919 --> 00:22:35,520
which means that it's a bit messy up
690
00:22:33,840 --> 00:22:37,200
there sometimes that might be better
691
00:22:35,520 --> 00:22:39,679
suited to an npc
692
00:22:37,200 --> 00:22:42,000
to be able to have a little bit more
693
00:22:39,679 --> 00:22:44,240
dynamacy a little bit more flexibility
694
00:22:42,000 --> 00:22:45,760
and how to have that interaction with
695
00:22:44,240 --> 00:22:49,039
the players rather than it just being a
696
00:22:45,760 --> 00:22:50,799
one-way kind of uh mundane item yeah and
697
00:22:49,039 --> 00:22:52,720
you can always also just combine the two
698
00:22:50,799 --> 00:22:54,960
so say rather than being innate to them
699
00:22:52,720 --> 00:22:57,039
it could be an item so like for instance
700
00:22:54,960 --> 00:22:58,480
um the players i worked for part of a
701
00:22:57,039 --> 00:22:59,760
wizard's guild where they had a series
702
00:22:58,480 --> 00:23:01,600
of really powerful mages with an item
703
00:22:59,760 --> 00:23:03,679
called armor breakers and so what they
704
00:23:01,600 --> 00:23:04,400
were was like plus two equipment that if
705
00:23:03,679 --> 00:23:07,520
you
706
00:23:04,400 --> 00:23:09,280
exceeded the ac check
707
00:23:07,520 --> 00:23:10,720
on a roll it had an additional effect so
708
00:23:09,280 --> 00:23:13,919
like one of them casts funder wave if
709
00:23:10,720 --> 00:23:15,280
you exceeded the ac by three and so that
710
00:23:13,919 --> 00:23:17,760
was just a really powerful ability that
711
00:23:15,280 --> 00:23:19,280
the npc had and hey maybe the npc gives
712
00:23:17,760 --> 00:23:20,960
it to one of the players after like a
713
00:23:19,280 --> 00:23:23,600
really big quest or something
714
00:23:20,960 --> 00:23:26,559
oh man that's that's so like
715
00:23:23,600 --> 00:23:28,480
if say the ace is 15 they hit 15 16 or
716
00:23:26,559 --> 00:23:30,480
17 they hit they got 18 on their roll
717
00:23:28,480 --> 00:23:33,520
yeah yes they hit as normal but then 18
718
00:23:30,480 --> 00:23:36,240
and up they also cast thunder wave yep
719
00:23:33,520 --> 00:23:38,640
so like trip or something that's uh
720
00:23:36,240 --> 00:23:41,279
that's cool yeah
721
00:23:38,640 --> 00:23:42,320
um i'm gonna steal that
722
00:23:41,279 --> 00:23:44,460
she's gonna give credit to the
723
00:23:42,320 --> 00:23:46,960
show-n-flat podcast every time yeah
724
00:23:44,460 --> 00:23:48,880
[Laughter]
725
00:23:46,960 --> 00:23:50,720
and because you hold an 18 you get to
726
00:23:48,880 --> 00:23:52,080
cast thunder wave credits the show
727
00:23:50,720 --> 00:23:54,640
podcast
728
00:23:52,080 --> 00:23:56,400
[Laughter]
729
00:23:54,640 --> 00:23:58,480
exactly just like that i'll bring up a
730
00:23:56,400 --> 00:23:59,679
little watermark on my my discord camera
731
00:23:58,480 --> 00:24:01,679
as well
732
00:23:59,679 --> 00:24:02,880
so just so they know yeah thank you very
733
00:24:01,679 --> 00:24:06,159
much
734
00:24:02,880 --> 00:24:08,080
um i know that that is a very cool idea
735
00:24:06,159 --> 00:24:10,559
so yeah sorry thank you thank you for
736
00:24:08,080 --> 00:24:12,159
humoring me there and listening to me go
737
00:24:10,559 --> 00:24:14,320
round around the houses
738
00:24:12,159 --> 00:24:16,400
no it's not good a brain just just
739
00:24:14,320 --> 00:24:18,559
throwing out crazy things i'm thinking
740
00:24:16,400 --> 00:24:20,400
up on the spot but um
741
00:24:18,559 --> 00:24:22,480
yeah i mean i'm
742
00:24:20,400 --> 00:24:23,600
stoked because i felt like i've learned
743
00:24:22,480 --> 00:24:26,640
a lot and
744
00:24:23,600 --> 00:24:28,480
we've talked about a whole bunch already
745
00:24:26,640 --> 00:24:29,679
one one thing that i wanted to get your
746
00:24:28,480 --> 00:24:31,760
take on and again this is going to be a
747
00:24:29,679 --> 00:24:34,880
decent question i think because of the
748
00:24:31,760 --> 00:24:37,200
nature of our games
749
00:24:34,880 --> 00:24:39,120
so one of my notes was about pricing and
750
00:24:37,200 --> 00:24:40,559
pricing magical items and i already know
751
00:24:39,120 --> 00:24:43,919
what your answer's going to be but my
752
00:24:40,559 --> 00:24:45,360
hit i'll i'll ask the question anyway
753
00:24:43,919 --> 00:24:47,360
was that i think there's some broad
754
00:24:45,360 --> 00:24:48,720
guidance in xanathar's but really
755
00:24:47,360 --> 00:24:51,520
there's no
756
00:24:48,720 --> 00:24:53,679
yeah kind of hard written this costs x
757
00:24:51,520 --> 00:24:54,640
or even you know blue items cost y and
758
00:24:53,679 --> 00:24:56,320
greenland
759
00:24:54,640 --> 00:24:57,919
i never [ __ ] know what to cost items
760
00:24:56,320 --> 00:24:59,520
i just
761
00:24:57,919 --> 00:25:00,720
i don't even know at this point like
762
00:24:59,520 --> 00:25:02,400
that's another thing where i just make
763
00:25:00,720 --> 00:25:04,480
it cost x and i balance the entire
764
00:25:02,400 --> 00:25:06,480
economy over the prices i give players
765
00:25:04,480 --> 00:25:07,919
mm-hmm yeah as i that's what i thought
766
00:25:06,480 --> 00:25:10,640
that you would just eyeball it funnily
767
00:25:07,919 --> 00:25:12,400
enough but yes yeah yeah old man mcguppy
768
00:25:10,640 --> 00:25:15,520
this fish man that just like hey you
769
00:25:12,400 --> 00:25:17,360
want to buy some items
770
00:25:15,520 --> 00:25:19,440
yeah i i
771
00:25:17,360 --> 00:25:21,200
i am a fool because funnily enough that
772
00:25:19,440 --> 00:25:23,039
when they were in that elven city before
773
00:25:21,200 --> 00:25:25,039
um before us all being attacked by
774
00:25:23,039 --> 00:25:27,200
lovecraftian horrors they went to like a
775
00:25:25,039 --> 00:25:29,679
little minor magic shop and i'd set up
776
00:25:27,200 --> 00:25:31,679
a a bit of machiavellian of me i have to
777
00:25:29,679 --> 00:25:33,120
say but i'd provided a number of
778
00:25:31,679 --> 00:25:35,600
trinkets and baubles so we're not
779
00:25:33,120 --> 00:25:38,480
talking like you know legendary or even
780
00:25:35,600 --> 00:25:40,000
blue items mainly just gold and uncommon
781
00:25:38,480 --> 00:25:42,720
i like utility you know maybe about 10
782
00:25:40,000 --> 00:25:44,720
of the utility and aesthetic items but
783
00:25:42,720 --> 00:25:46,880
the total cost was more than the current
784
00:25:44,720 --> 00:25:50,320
gold they had which was a as i said a
785
00:25:46,880 --> 00:25:52,480
bit a bit mischievous of me to uh
786
00:25:50,320 --> 00:25:54,320
to meta in such a way but i wanted to
787
00:25:52,480 --> 00:25:56,720
force the interesting decision of well
788
00:25:54,320 --> 00:25:58,240
we've got a limited resource what should
789
00:25:56,720 --> 00:25:59,760
we buy without then how do we want to
790
00:25:58,240 --> 00:26:01,279
cut it do we want to get two weaker ones
791
00:25:59,760 --> 00:26:04,240
or one stronger one or whatever that's
792
00:26:01,279 --> 00:26:06,880
always the dilemma isn't it and uh
793
00:26:04,240 --> 00:26:08,799
to get to that you know obviously to to
794
00:26:06,880 --> 00:26:11,279
do that to achieve that interesting
795
00:26:08,799 --> 00:26:13,200
decision i had to know what to cost them
796
00:26:11,279 --> 00:26:15,840
and that was a rabbit hole i was not
797
00:26:13,200 --> 00:26:15,840
prepared for
798
00:26:16,159 --> 00:26:21,039
i mean i guess i could have attributed
799
00:26:18,799 --> 00:26:23,200
you know dan low's own cost homebrew
800
00:26:21,039 --> 00:26:24,799
cost to these items but then i don't
801
00:26:23,200 --> 00:26:26,799
know maybe for some reason at that time
802
00:26:24,799 --> 00:26:28,080
that seemed like more work and then
803
00:26:26,799 --> 00:26:29,919
actually trying to find the actual cost
804
00:26:28,080 --> 00:26:32,159
of the items was absolutely was actually
805
00:26:29,919 --> 00:26:33,760
more work so
806
00:26:32,159 --> 00:26:35,440
that's true yeah sometimes you just got
807
00:26:33,760 --> 00:26:36,880
to give up on that kind of stuff economy
808
00:26:35,440 --> 00:26:38,159
is just probably the most broken thing
809
00:26:36,880 --> 00:26:40,559
because you know it's hard to eyeball
810
00:26:38,159 --> 00:26:41,840
how much everything costs yeah yeah oh
811
00:26:40,559 --> 00:26:44,240
good i'm glad it's not just me because
812
00:26:41,840 --> 00:26:45,520
my economy is fine no no no yeah yeah i
813
00:26:44,240 --> 00:26:46,880
don't even know if my players have a use
814
00:26:45,520 --> 00:26:48,559
for money anymore
815
00:26:46,880 --> 00:26:51,279
yeah yeah i
816
00:26:48,559 --> 00:26:52,960
i i find that i guess if you want to
817
00:26:51,279 --> 00:26:54,640
stretch the terminology get the golden
818
00:26:52,960 --> 00:26:57,360
items and treasure and diamonds and that
819
00:26:54,640 --> 00:26:59,360
count as items yeah and i i always did
820
00:26:57,360 --> 00:27:01,200
find it a bit weird that you know like
821
00:26:59,360 --> 00:27:02,559
the the treasure tables and the rolling
822
00:27:01,200 --> 00:27:05,279
tables and all the loot in the books
823
00:27:02,559 --> 00:27:07,679
it's like you find 2 000 g's worth of
824
00:27:05,279 --> 00:27:09,760
gold and i there was always a niggling
825
00:27:07,679 --> 00:27:12,080
thought in the back of my head that like
826
00:27:09,760 --> 00:27:12,880
is that good because it doesn't sound
827
00:27:12,080 --> 00:27:14,000
great
828
00:27:12,880 --> 00:27:16,480
if you're playing like a one shot or
829
00:27:14,000 --> 00:27:17,840
even a short campaign like five sessions
830
00:27:16,480 --> 00:27:19,440
realistically
831
00:27:17,840 --> 00:27:20,480
unless you set up some there's a shop
832
00:27:19,440 --> 00:27:21,760
next door
833
00:27:20,480 --> 00:27:23,120
which is kind of contrived you may as
834
00:27:21,760 --> 00:27:24,799
well just skipped out them finding their
835
00:27:23,120 --> 00:27:26,640
gold and just just give them the money
836
00:27:24,799 --> 00:27:28,640
exactly yeah exactly right
837
00:27:26,640 --> 00:27:31,120
oh oh it's a longer term campaign like
838
00:27:28,640 --> 00:27:34,960
hours where eventually money becomes
839
00:27:31,120 --> 00:27:38,320
completely redundant anyway yeah so
840
00:27:34,960 --> 00:27:41,600
i could i just couldn't seem to find
841
00:27:38,320 --> 00:27:43,279
the particular game where that worked
842
00:27:41,600 --> 00:27:44,640
i mean you always got to see what does
843
00:27:43,279 --> 00:27:46,240
and doesn't work it also depends on the
844
00:27:44,640 --> 00:27:48,559
campaign
845
00:27:46,240 --> 00:27:50,720
obviously if you were running like excel
846
00:27:48,559 --> 00:27:52,159
spreadsheet campaign where you know you
847
00:27:50,720 --> 00:27:54,000
counted and you know that everything had
848
00:27:52,159 --> 00:27:56,000
a value and and
849
00:27:54,000 --> 00:27:58,799
managing finances was an element then
850
00:27:56,000 --> 00:28:01,039
yeah for sure i can see why you'd wanna
851
00:27:58,799 --> 00:28:02,480
have it but otherwise it's just like
852
00:28:01,039 --> 00:28:03,520
it's just like nothing it's just like
853
00:28:02,480 --> 00:28:05,200
you find the end of the dungeon here's
854
00:28:03,520 --> 00:28:06,080
2000 gold
855
00:28:05,200 --> 00:28:08,000
oh
856
00:28:06,080 --> 00:28:09,039
great
857
00:28:08,000 --> 00:28:10,320
it doesn't really
858
00:28:09,039 --> 00:28:12,720
it doesn't really strike it because i
859
00:28:10,320 --> 00:28:14,320
think the problem is is you need
860
00:28:12,720 --> 00:28:15,440
that in of itself
861
00:28:14,320 --> 00:28:17,679
in d and d
862
00:28:15,440 --> 00:28:19,919
isn't a reward it's
863
00:28:17,679 --> 00:28:21,919
predicated on there being a way to spend
864
00:28:19,919 --> 00:28:23,120
it which in of itself is determined by
865
00:28:21,919 --> 00:28:24,320
the dm
866
00:28:23,120 --> 00:28:26,399
so even though you might have given
867
00:28:24,320 --> 00:28:27,919
players 2000 gold you actually haven't
868
00:28:26,399 --> 00:28:29,840
given them the actual reward until
869
00:28:27,919 --> 00:28:31,840
you've given them a shot to spend it in
870
00:28:29,840 --> 00:28:33,440
which until they get there
871
00:28:31,840 --> 00:28:36,559
they don't know when or where that is
872
00:28:33,440 --> 00:28:38,399
which is just nothing yeah but yeah so i
873
00:28:36,559 --> 00:28:40,080
did i did do in that in that research of
874
00:28:38,399 --> 00:28:41,200
mine i did do a whole bunch of i googled
875
00:28:40,080 --> 00:28:42,399
and asked a whole bunch of people that
876
00:28:41,200 --> 00:28:44,480
said i need to price them and i got a
877
00:28:42,399 --> 00:28:46,799
number of good resources to doing so
878
00:28:44,480 --> 00:28:48,480
both specifics and broad
879
00:28:46,799 --> 00:28:51,120
but there's a there's a tt rpg i'm
880
00:28:48,480 --> 00:28:52,799
looking at a new one and the way they do
881
00:28:51,120 --> 00:28:54,559
things against
882
00:28:52,799 --> 00:28:57,600
against the dark master and the way they
883
00:28:54,559 --> 00:28:59,360
do things which you might like is
884
00:28:57,600 --> 00:29:01,600
from what i understand they just there's
885
00:28:59,360 --> 00:29:04,399
no monetary that there's no numerical
886
00:29:01,600 --> 00:29:05,600
value to money yeah based on your you
887
00:29:04,399 --> 00:29:07,360
know your kin
888
00:29:05,600 --> 00:29:09,600
your lineage your background all that
889
00:29:07,360 --> 00:29:12,240
kind of stuff determines
890
00:29:09,600 --> 00:29:13,840
kind of like a bracket you fall in and
891
00:29:12,240 --> 00:29:16,720
basically if something is in your
892
00:29:13,840 --> 00:29:18,399
bracket or lower you can afford it
893
00:29:16,720 --> 00:29:20,320
essentially and that's that's it really
894
00:29:18,399 --> 00:29:22,159
yeah yeah that's it's just it's also
895
00:29:20,320 --> 00:29:23,440
just like money all doesn't it's just
896
00:29:22,159 --> 00:29:25,120
weird bookkeeping where it doesn't
897
00:29:23,440 --> 00:29:26,480
matter until it does that's a good way
898
00:29:25,120 --> 00:29:29,120
of putting it doesn't matter until it
899
00:29:26,480 --> 00:29:31,700
does but then it's not fun
900
00:29:29,120 --> 00:29:34,969
exactly
901
00:29:31,700 --> 00:29:34,969
[Music]
902
00:29:37,560 --> 00:29:42,240
[Music]
903
00:29:40,799 --> 00:29:43,120
another thing
904
00:29:42,240 --> 00:29:44,880
there
905
00:29:43,120 --> 00:29:46,480
then around
906
00:29:44,880 --> 00:29:47,279
rarity
907
00:29:46,480 --> 00:29:48,320
so
908
00:29:47,279 --> 00:29:50,399
when you're
909
00:29:48,320 --> 00:29:53,039
santa claus and just throwing magic
910
00:29:50,399 --> 00:29:54,240
items at you out yet bag left right
911
00:29:53,039 --> 00:29:56,000
which is the image i have in my head of
912
00:29:54,240 --> 00:29:58,080
course relatively relative to the grinch
913
00:29:56,000 --> 00:29:59,120
which is me of course hoarding them all
914
00:29:58,080 --> 00:30:01,440
yes that's very accurate
915
00:29:59,120 --> 00:30:03,520
[Laughter]
916
00:30:01,440 --> 00:30:05,150
if i was any good at r i'd draw us in
917
00:30:03,520 --> 00:30:06,880
you know in that situation
918
00:30:05,150 --> 00:30:09,600
[Laughter]
919
00:30:06,880 --> 00:30:11,760
but uh so in terms of like rarity then
920
00:30:09,600 --> 00:30:13,600
does that even come into your equation
921
00:30:11,760 --> 00:30:15,520
of that or is that just just give them
922
00:30:13,600 --> 00:30:17,120
light i think they'll like
923
00:30:15,520 --> 00:30:18,480
i mean within the power level of
924
00:30:17,120 --> 00:30:20,559
obviously if it's like a damaging enemy
925
00:30:18,480 --> 00:30:22,480
give them a plus one or something
926
00:30:20,559 --> 00:30:23,440
yeah i also have a nara system so let me
927
00:30:22,480 --> 00:30:24,960
know what's good to talk where i
928
00:30:23,440 --> 00:30:26,320
actually if we want to get into like
929
00:30:24,960 --> 00:30:27,919
what to do with the items that they just
930
00:30:26,320 --> 00:30:29,279
don't really use anymore and how you
931
00:30:27,919 --> 00:30:31,200
find new uses for that because i
932
00:30:29,279 --> 00:30:32,640
actually have like a recycling magical
933
00:30:31,200 --> 00:30:34,399
item mechanic if you would like me to
934
00:30:32,640 --> 00:30:35,520
get into that oh yeah go ahead talk
935
00:30:34,399 --> 00:30:37,360
about that that'd be interesting to hear
936
00:30:35,520 --> 00:30:39,600
because that ties into something i was
937
00:30:37,360 --> 00:30:41,039
going to talk about later on so uh so
938
00:30:39,600 --> 00:30:42,640
what it is is they work for the guild
939
00:30:41,039 --> 00:30:43,760
and so a mechanic i came up with was
940
00:30:42,640 --> 00:30:45,440
because they kept collecting like
941
00:30:43,760 --> 00:30:46,480
different random artifacts and magical
942
00:30:45,440 --> 00:30:48,399
pieces is
943
00:30:46,480 --> 00:30:50,559
there is a forge and what they can do is
944
00:30:48,399 --> 00:30:53,039
they actually can give different magical
945
00:30:50,559 --> 00:30:54,720
items to be fused together to make new
946
00:30:53,039 --> 00:30:56,240
ones but what happens is the way it's
947
00:30:54,720 --> 00:30:59,200
fused is they have to call upon an
948
00:30:56,240 --> 00:31:01,120
elemental spirit that inhabits the items
949
00:30:59,200 --> 00:31:02,960
and so it turns it actually into like us
950
00:31:01,120 --> 00:31:05,039
i would say like a mini boss fight where
951
00:31:02,960 --> 00:31:06,960
they have to fight a creature that
952
00:31:05,039 --> 00:31:09,279
represents what the new item will do
953
00:31:06,960 --> 00:31:12,080
like for instance one player had a magic
954
00:31:09,279 --> 00:31:14,159
bow a plus one bow um and he later got
955
00:31:12,080 --> 00:31:16,640
like a plus two crossbow and he had like
956
00:31:14,159 --> 00:31:19,279
a healing potion of giant strength and
957
00:31:16,640 --> 00:31:21,039
so he combined the two into a potion and
958
00:31:19,279 --> 00:31:23,200
so he had to fight like this archer
959
00:31:21,039 --> 00:31:24,880
giant creature and then when he won you
960
00:31:23,200 --> 00:31:27,840
know he got this potion where once per
961
00:31:24,880 --> 00:31:29,760
day he can activate it and it give it
962
00:31:27,840 --> 00:31:31,360
super sizes his arm and flies like a
963
00:31:29,760 --> 00:31:32,960
giant arrow
964
00:31:31,360 --> 00:31:35,120
out but he had to beat the boss to be
965
00:31:32,960 --> 00:31:37,440
able to get that item yeah
966
00:31:35,120 --> 00:31:39,919
that is is i love it because it's
967
00:31:37,440 --> 00:31:42,320
classic like video game crafting oh yeah
968
00:31:39,919 --> 00:31:43,600
it's 100 super video game in there yeah
969
00:31:42,320 --> 00:31:45,600
yeah i like you know use the two
970
00:31:43,600 --> 00:31:47,120
reagents to create you know but you know
971
00:31:45,600 --> 00:31:48,320
warning these things will be consumed in
972
00:31:47,120 --> 00:31:51,760
the process do you want to continue i
973
00:31:48,320 --> 00:31:54,080
love i love that uh that's great um
974
00:31:51,760 --> 00:31:55,600
and presumably you're home brewing all
975
00:31:54,080 --> 00:31:57,679
the resultant items because there could
976
00:31:55,600 --> 00:31:59,679
be any number of combinations
977
00:31:57,679 --> 00:32:00,799
yeah so that's just been a mechanic i
978
00:31:59,679 --> 00:32:01,919
really liked in the players really love
979
00:32:00,799 --> 00:32:03,519
it because you know then they're
980
00:32:01,919 --> 00:32:04,799
checking you know they're remembering
981
00:32:03,519 --> 00:32:06,000
what they have because they have to go
982
00:32:04,799 --> 00:32:07,519
through their inventory and say oh i
983
00:32:06,000 --> 00:32:09,039
could use this and this and then runs up
984
00:32:07,519 --> 00:32:11,120
oh i forgot i have this really cool item
985
00:32:09,039 --> 00:32:13,279
like they i gave them like a it was like
986
00:32:11,120 --> 00:32:15,120
a grooming kit where if you applied it
987
00:32:13,279 --> 00:32:16,799
in the morning you would get plus one on
988
00:32:15,120 --> 00:32:18,080
your charisma checks
989
00:32:16,799 --> 00:32:19,279
so they like completely forgot they had
990
00:32:18,080 --> 00:32:20,720
that in them until they were like oh you
991
00:32:19,279 --> 00:32:21,519
should really start using this more you
992
00:32:20,720 --> 00:32:24,080
know
993
00:32:21,519 --> 00:32:26,480
it's part of my morning preparation
994
00:32:24,080 --> 00:32:28,720
after i've done a long rest i love that
995
00:32:26,480 --> 00:32:30,559
is also reassuring to hear because i've
996
00:32:28,720 --> 00:32:32,640
heard and it's the same with myself even
997
00:32:30,559 --> 00:32:34,720
though they don't have the the swimming
998
00:32:32,640 --> 00:32:35,840
pools of magical items your players do
999
00:32:34,720 --> 00:32:38,000
even so
1000
00:32:35,840 --> 00:32:40,240
my players regularly forget
1001
00:32:38,000 --> 00:32:42,559
that they're like oh [ __ ] yeah i forgot
1002
00:32:40,240 --> 00:32:44,480
i had those like i think the the rogue
1003
00:32:42,559 --> 00:32:46,080
again has got boots of elven kind and he
1004
00:32:44,480 --> 00:32:47,679
just yeah just completely forgets about
1005
00:32:46,080 --> 00:32:49,279
them half the time
1006
00:32:47,679 --> 00:32:51,360
so that is a very good
1007
00:32:49,279 --> 00:32:53,919
in universe way of getting them to dig
1008
00:32:51,360 --> 00:32:56,080
through their bags and exactly find out
1009
00:32:53,919 --> 00:32:57,919
what they've got yeah no i love that i
1010
00:32:56,080 --> 00:33:00,159
love that all this random magic [ __ ] in
1011
00:32:57,919 --> 00:33:01,919
their pockets
1012
00:33:00,159 --> 00:33:02,960
i'd love to have them like
1013
00:33:01,919 --> 00:33:04,640
oh you should do something where they
1014
00:33:02,960 --> 00:33:06,320
like overload the machine or maybe
1015
00:33:04,640 --> 00:33:08,000
there's like two like you know
1016
00:33:06,320 --> 00:33:09,600
incompatible items or they put three
1017
00:33:08,000 --> 00:33:11,919
items in then something
1018
00:33:09,600 --> 00:33:14,159
crazy happens maybe that's definitely an
1019
00:33:11,919 --> 00:33:15,600
interesting direction
1020
00:33:14,159 --> 00:33:18,240
so far limited to two because i also
1021
00:33:15,600 --> 00:33:20,960
have to think of like items then
1022
00:33:18,240 --> 00:33:22,480
yeah yeah yeah sure sure oh yeah sorry
1023
00:33:20,960 --> 00:33:24,320
i'm now like thinking about you're just
1024
00:33:22,480 --> 00:33:25,919
like i just i just want to play d d
1025
00:33:24,320 --> 00:33:28,000
right now
1026
00:33:25,919 --> 00:33:30,399
the curse the curse of running the show
1027
00:33:28,000 --> 00:33:30,820
is that is often the case of what
1028
00:33:30,399 --> 00:33:33,039
happens
1029
00:33:30,820 --> 00:33:34,399
[Laughter]
1030
00:33:33,039 --> 00:33:35,600
but for those
1031
00:33:34,399 --> 00:33:38,399
i think i think
1032
00:33:35,600 --> 00:33:40,720
that is a solution to power creep i
1033
00:33:38,399 --> 00:33:42,880
guess is one way to put it so and i
1034
00:33:40,720 --> 00:33:46,240
think that's quite inevitable especially
1035
00:33:42,880 --> 00:33:47,679
in longer form campaigns uh where
1036
00:33:46,240 --> 00:33:49,360
there's you know you're leveling up from
1037
00:33:47,679 --> 00:33:50,799
like one to ten one to twenty or
1038
00:33:49,360 --> 00:33:53,600
whatever and it isn't just a one shot
1039
00:33:50,799 --> 00:33:56,480
where the plus one long sword might seem
1040
00:33:53,600 --> 00:33:59,279
you know insane at level three
1041
00:33:56,480 --> 00:34:00,480
but then level seven onwards it doesn't
1042
00:33:59,279 --> 00:34:02,159
really make a difference someone's
1043
00:34:00,480 --> 00:34:05,120
taking a feat and they've got plus two
1044
00:34:02,159 --> 00:34:06,880
in there you know their primary skill so
1045
00:34:05,120 --> 00:34:08,000
my sword doesn't even do that
1046
00:34:06,880 --> 00:34:10,879
so like
1047
00:34:08,000 --> 00:34:12,879
in in in campaigns where there aren't
1048
00:34:10,879 --> 00:34:15,679
so many magic items or this you know
1049
00:34:12,879 --> 00:34:17,599
magic forge doesn't exist wha what have
1050
00:34:15,679 --> 00:34:18,879
you got any thoughts around like
1051
00:34:17,599 --> 00:34:20,879
how to
1052
00:34:18,879 --> 00:34:23,040
get around that or is your solution just
1053
00:34:20,879 --> 00:34:25,040
also to be like just chuck it it just
1054
00:34:23,040 --> 00:34:26,480
gets upgraded it's just a long it scales
1055
00:34:25,040 --> 00:34:28,000
with the players in a way you could do a
1056
00:34:26,480 --> 00:34:29,679
very video game thing where it scales
1057
00:34:28,000 --> 00:34:31,040
with the players well i mean that's why
1058
00:34:29,679 --> 00:34:33,359
i have that recycling mechanic because
1059
00:34:31,040 --> 00:34:34,960
even if an item isn't really powerful
1060
00:34:33,359 --> 00:34:36,240
enough you can merge it with other
1061
00:34:34,960 --> 00:34:38,480
unpowerful items and that's how you
1062
00:34:36,240 --> 00:34:40,000
might be able to get a plus two
1063
00:34:38,480 --> 00:34:42,480
so that's really what i have done and
1064
00:34:40,000 --> 00:34:45,119
then yeah just naturally just find new
1065
00:34:42,480 --> 00:34:47,599
tools and stuff and also i
1066
00:34:45,119 --> 00:34:49,440
the combat encounters are more i guess
1067
00:34:47,599 --> 00:34:50,639
cinematic so it's not super important
1068
00:34:49,440 --> 00:34:52,159
that they need to become more powerful
1069
00:34:50,639 --> 00:34:54,240
as long as they feel more powerful
1070
00:34:52,159 --> 00:34:55,599
mm-hmm and how how do you achieve that
1071
00:34:54,240 --> 00:34:57,440
how do you how do you achieve that
1072
00:34:55,599 --> 00:34:58,880
feeling for the players well yeah so
1073
00:34:57,440 --> 00:35:01,040
like i said like i dynamically change
1074
00:34:58,880 --> 00:35:02,640
the stats i encounters i make sure they
1075
00:35:01,040 --> 00:35:03,680
have weaknesses that play up to it so
1076
00:35:02,640 --> 00:35:05,359
you know if a player thinks that a
1077
00:35:03,680 --> 00:35:06,560
creature has a weakness and they don't
1078
00:35:05,359 --> 00:35:07,760
there's no reason why they can't have
1079
00:35:06,560 --> 00:35:10,960
that weakness to make the player feel
1080
00:35:07,760 --> 00:35:14,160
like they're clever mm-hmm you know
1081
00:35:10,960 --> 00:35:16,079
we play very different games
1082
00:35:14,160 --> 00:35:17,440
that's fair i just that you know it's
1083
00:35:16,079 --> 00:35:18,640
like when you don't prepare anything you
1084
00:35:17,440 --> 00:35:20,000
should at least let the players get the
1085
00:35:18,640 --> 00:35:21,040
most out of what they're trying to do
1086
00:35:20,000 --> 00:35:23,040
because it's not like they have anything
1087
00:35:21,040 --> 00:35:23,920
they're ruining yeah
1088
00:35:23,040 --> 00:35:25,680
i'm
1089
00:35:23,920 --> 00:35:27,680
so ambivalent right now because on the
1090
00:35:25,680 --> 00:35:30,560
one hand i'm jealous of your like
1091
00:35:27,680 --> 00:35:32,960
free-wheeling care you know carefree low
1092
00:35:30,560 --> 00:35:35,200
risk but high reward way of playing it
1093
00:35:32,960 --> 00:35:36,960
but then on the other hand i'm like
1094
00:35:35,200 --> 00:35:38,480
no but things have to be
1095
00:35:36,960 --> 00:35:40,480
you know
1096
00:35:38,480 --> 00:35:42,240
undeads are undeads and that's it and
1097
00:35:40,480 --> 00:35:44,000
you know they're weak to to radian
1098
00:35:42,240 --> 00:35:45,520
damage but resistant to bludgeoning
1099
00:35:44,000 --> 00:35:47,520
damage and that's that's
1100
00:35:45,520 --> 00:35:49,599
that's it that's my two my two sides and
1101
00:35:47,520 --> 00:35:51,760
my personality are now very much in
1102
00:35:49,599 --> 00:35:53,359
conflict so thanks
1103
00:35:51,760 --> 00:35:55,599
oh geez i'm sorry to bring such
1104
00:35:53,359 --> 00:35:56,839
struggles for your life yes yes first of
1105
00:35:55,599 --> 00:35:58,560
all dnd
1106
00:35:56,839 --> 00:36:01,200
problems that would be a good name for a
1107
00:35:58,560 --> 00:36:03,839
podcast yeah yeah yeah that's winte
1108
00:36:01,200 --> 00:36:06,640
first world edition yeah oh okay
1109
00:36:03,839 --> 00:36:08,720
trademark trademark uh right
1110
00:36:06,640 --> 00:36:10,079
thank you
1111
00:36:08,720 --> 00:36:11,680
okay so
1112
00:36:10,079 --> 00:36:13,040
this this question there might be a
1113
00:36:11,680 --> 00:36:14,640
little bit more up to your street in
1114
00:36:13,040 --> 00:36:17,440
which case then
1115
00:36:14,640 --> 00:36:19,520
do you have a favorite item
1116
00:36:17,440 --> 00:36:20,800
oh yeah so my favorite and this one just
1117
00:36:19,520 --> 00:36:22,560
completely can break the game it's
1118
00:36:20,800 --> 00:36:25,599
called nagrum staff
1119
00:36:22,560 --> 00:36:28,160
where uh do you have any guesses
1120
00:36:25,599 --> 00:36:29,200
presumably that's someone's name
1121
00:36:28,160 --> 00:36:30,000
um
1122
00:36:29,200 --> 00:36:31,760
but
1123
00:36:30,000 --> 00:36:34,800
outside of that no
1124
00:36:31,760 --> 00:36:37,760
so it is a staff that when it touches an
1125
00:36:34,800 --> 00:36:40,240
object within your size or smaller or i
1126
00:36:37,760 --> 00:36:42,560
guess medium or smaller it allows you to
1127
00:36:40,240 --> 00:36:45,510
cast polymorph to turn it into any other
1128
00:36:42,560 --> 00:36:49,040
object that it is an anagram of
1129
00:36:45,510 --> 00:36:49,040
[Laughter]
1130
00:36:50,160 --> 00:36:52,320
okay
1131
00:36:51,200 --> 00:36:54,720
okay
1132
00:36:52,320 --> 00:36:57,200
oh man again that's like
1133
00:36:54,720 --> 00:36:59,200
there's a theme appearing here uh like a
1134
00:36:57,200 --> 00:37:00,880
wordplay theme for you i know i'm
1135
00:36:59,200 --> 00:37:04,079
gradually like working out what ticks
1136
00:37:00,880 --> 00:37:06,240
your boxes right okay okay uh i'm not
1137
00:37:04,079 --> 00:37:08,320
very good with spelling so as the zephyr
1138
00:37:06,240 --> 00:37:09,920
thing should have really painted a good
1139
00:37:08,320 --> 00:37:11,680
picture of earlier on so i'm struggling
1140
00:37:09,920 --> 00:37:14,560
to think of one off the top of my head
1141
00:37:11,680 --> 00:37:17,760
uh what what use cases have have you had
1142
00:37:14,560 --> 00:37:18,960
so far with that sure so like there was
1143
00:37:17,760 --> 00:37:21,920
a golem
1144
00:37:18,960 --> 00:37:24,000
where they were able to bestow life into
1145
00:37:21,920 --> 00:37:25,280
it by changing part of the earth into a
1146
00:37:24,000 --> 00:37:26,880
heart
1147
00:37:25,280 --> 00:37:28,640
ah
1148
00:37:26,880 --> 00:37:29,599
so that's one where it's like if you you
1149
00:37:28,640 --> 00:37:31,760
just have to let it go because you're
1150
00:37:29,599 --> 00:37:33,359
going to break a lot of stuff yeah but
1151
00:37:31,760 --> 00:37:35,040
it's also the players it's a lot of work
1152
00:37:33,359 --> 00:37:37,040
to find good combinations so it's really
1153
00:37:35,040 --> 00:37:39,520
one of those where either they don't use
1154
00:37:37,040 --> 00:37:40,640
it or they have a very very clever idea
1155
00:37:39,520 --> 00:37:42,320
yeah
1156
00:37:40,640 --> 00:37:44,160
yeah i can imagine
1157
00:37:42,320 --> 00:37:46,400
it being
1158
00:37:44,160 --> 00:37:48,880
uh you can't really plan for that as the
1159
00:37:46,400 --> 00:37:50,560
dm i would say you just it's a good it's
1160
00:37:48,880 --> 00:37:51,599
a good like one shot or maybe a
1161
00:37:50,560 --> 00:37:53,040
two-parter where you let them think
1162
00:37:51,599 --> 00:37:55,839
about uses and then if they break things
1163
00:37:53,040 --> 00:37:57,599
in the second session it's fine
1164
00:37:55,839 --> 00:37:59,040
it reminds me of like those those those
1165
00:37:57,599 --> 00:38:00,640
video games where you can draw you you
1166
00:37:59,040 --> 00:38:02,800
type in what item you want to appear and
1167
00:38:00,640 --> 00:38:04,320
it just appears and you can use it
1168
00:38:02,800 --> 00:38:06,079
it's that similar thing let me just
1169
00:38:04,320 --> 00:38:08,640
completely change the
1170
00:38:06,079 --> 00:38:10,560
uh the world here okay do you know why
1171
00:38:08,640 --> 00:38:11,520
it's called nagrum i presume it's an
1172
00:38:10,560 --> 00:38:15,200
anagram
1173
00:38:11,520 --> 00:38:17,200
of anagram yeah yeah okay good good
1174
00:38:15,200 --> 00:38:18,880
i'm gonna obviously in post cut all this
1175
00:38:17,200 --> 00:38:21,680
out and say well it's an anagram of
1176
00:38:18,880 --> 00:38:22,960
anagram of course and
1177
00:38:21,680 --> 00:38:24,240
it actually would work differently
1178
00:38:22,960 --> 00:38:25,760
though in the uk because you spell some
1179
00:38:24,240 --> 00:38:27,839
words different so
1180
00:38:25,760 --> 00:38:30,240
uh well maybe just the you right you
1181
00:38:27,839 --> 00:38:32,240
drop the news over there which would
1182
00:38:30,240 --> 00:38:34,400
make things more difficult i would
1183
00:38:32,240 --> 00:38:35,359
imagine man spelling really isn't my
1184
00:38:34,400 --> 00:38:37,610
forte
1185
00:38:35,359 --> 00:38:40,640
if that isn't patently obvious already
1186
00:38:37,610 --> 00:38:43,440
[Laughter]
1187
00:38:40,640 --> 00:38:45,599
uh i see i knew i knew that you like as
1188
00:38:43,440 --> 00:38:47,440
soon as i asked you like boom i know
1189
00:38:45,599 --> 00:38:49,599
here's my favorite item of all time
1190
00:38:47,440 --> 00:38:51,359
that's now i know
1191
00:38:49,599 --> 00:38:53,119
yeah another one i really liked is um it
1192
00:38:51,359 --> 00:38:57,200
was a fedora where if you tap if you
1193
00:38:53,119 --> 00:38:57,200
tipped it it would cast zone of truth
1194
00:38:58,320 --> 00:39:02,900
no one ever no one ever used it i'm just
1195
00:39:00,880 --> 00:39:05,680
here to interrogate you milady
1196
00:39:02,900 --> 00:39:07,440
[Laughter]
1197
00:39:05,680 --> 00:39:08,960
uh okay
1198
00:39:07,440 --> 00:39:10,560
though i think i think there's a
1199
00:39:08,960 --> 00:39:12,800
homebrew item in the campaign i play in
1200
00:39:10,560 --> 00:39:15,200
that the guy the the dm has given one of
1201
00:39:12,800 --> 00:39:16,880
the players and it's it's a hat funnily
1202
00:39:15,200 --> 00:39:19,359
enough and you can make
1203
00:39:16,880 --> 00:39:21,359
like three spectral birds fly around it
1204
00:39:19,359 --> 00:39:22,560
like proper looney tunes comic book
1205
00:39:21,359 --> 00:39:24,560
style of
1206
00:39:22,560 --> 00:39:28,920
like you're being dizzy essentially and
1207
00:39:24,560 --> 00:39:28,920
that's it that's like it's gimmick
1208
00:39:30,240 --> 00:39:33,920
what about then
1209
00:39:32,160 --> 00:39:35,200
obviously none of your own well maybe
1210
00:39:33,920 --> 00:39:37,040
some of your own maybe you did make some
1211
00:39:35,200 --> 00:39:38,240
mistakes in the past but in terms of
1212
00:39:37,040 --> 00:39:40,079
like let's go to the other end of the
1213
00:39:38,240 --> 00:39:41,599
scale then like bad items do you think
1214
00:39:40,079 --> 00:39:43,760
there are any like
1215
00:39:41,599 --> 00:39:47,359
i know bad is you know subjective and
1216
00:39:43,760 --> 00:39:48,960
relative but i'll leave you to define
1217
00:39:47,359 --> 00:39:51,119
the scope but
1218
00:39:48,960 --> 00:39:53,359
what items have you not enjoyed either
1219
00:39:51,119 --> 00:39:55,200
creating or using or your players using
1220
00:39:53,359 --> 00:39:56,720
so that's a really good question i think
1221
00:39:55,200 --> 00:39:58,800
really the problem is if you make items
1222
00:39:56,720 --> 00:40:00,720
that are too complicated or too obscure
1223
00:39:58,800 --> 00:40:03,040
so that's really where you get into that
1224
00:40:00,720 --> 00:40:05,200
oh i forgot i had this where they're not
1225
00:40:03,040 --> 00:40:07,040
impactful enough they're not interesting
1226
00:40:05,200 --> 00:40:08,319
you know it's also a problem where
1227
00:40:07,040 --> 00:40:10,079
players will get paranoid about saving
1228
00:40:08,319 --> 00:40:11,280
it for later you know hoard it i feel
1229
00:40:10,079 --> 00:40:12,560
like potions are really the only
1230
00:40:11,280 --> 00:40:13,920
exception where players know they can
1231
00:40:12,560 --> 00:40:15,760
just use it because they are frequent
1232
00:40:13,920 --> 00:40:17,680
enough but sometimes you know they'll
1233
00:40:15,760 --> 00:40:19,280
just hold on to like a massive damage
1234
00:40:17,680 --> 00:40:20,400
item or a massive buff item just because
1235
00:40:19,280 --> 00:40:22,079
they're like i don't know when i need
1236
00:40:20,400 --> 00:40:23,680
this like this boss fight's going pretty
1237
00:40:22,079 --> 00:40:25,359
well i don't need to you know give
1238
00:40:23,680 --> 00:40:27,359
myself plus two for this combat and
1239
00:40:25,359 --> 00:40:29,599
never have it again so that's really why
1240
00:40:27,359 --> 00:40:32,319
i've tried to weigh towards items that
1241
00:40:29,599 --> 00:40:33,680
have weird uses but are
1242
00:40:32,319 --> 00:40:35,599
reasonable on how much you can use them
1243
00:40:33,680 --> 00:40:37,520
so that they feel rewarded and not have
1244
00:40:35,599 --> 00:40:39,119
to be paranoid about is this the best
1245
00:40:37,520 --> 00:40:40,400
time i can use it
1246
00:40:39,119 --> 00:40:42,000
yeah there's nothing worse than having
1247
00:40:40,400 --> 00:40:44,400
something and then not really being able
1248
00:40:42,000 --> 00:40:46,000
to use it and doubly worse if it's you
1249
00:40:44,400 --> 00:40:47,520
they're making you not be able to use it
1250
00:40:46,000 --> 00:40:49,200
because you're you're holding it which
1251
00:40:47,520 --> 00:40:50,160
is such a classic you know that's
1252
00:40:49,200 --> 00:40:52,079
everybody
1253
00:40:50,160 --> 00:40:54,960
suffers from that at some point he'd be
1254
00:40:52,079 --> 00:40:56,800
in video games with ttrpgs um i think my
1255
00:40:54,960 --> 00:40:59,599
guys have had a potion of
1256
00:40:56,800 --> 00:41:01,200
invisibility for like 30 sessions and
1257
00:40:59,599 --> 00:41:03,200
yeah that's something the players never
1258
00:41:01,200 --> 00:41:04,240
will use yeah yeah i'll be knocking
1259
00:41:03,200 --> 00:41:06,400
around in the bottom of their bag of
1260
00:41:04,240 --> 00:41:08,240
holding foot until the credits roll yeah
1261
00:41:06,400 --> 00:41:10,240
yeah i think so maybe there's drink it
1262
00:41:08,240 --> 00:41:11,520
at the end just for fun yeah well that's
1263
00:41:10,240 --> 00:41:13,280
the fun of the final bosses then you can
1264
00:41:11,520 --> 00:41:15,119
just stack it on everything just do
1265
00:41:13,280 --> 00:41:17,040
everything and then one shot it yeah
1266
00:41:15,119 --> 00:41:18,240
yeah so i i think i definitely agree
1267
00:41:17,040 --> 00:41:20,319
there that having
1268
00:41:18,240 --> 00:41:22,319
reusable items makes sense because it
1269
00:41:20,319 --> 00:41:24,640
lessens that burden of well if this
1270
00:41:22,319 --> 00:41:26,319
doesn't work i'm screwed and the players
1271
00:41:24,640 --> 00:41:28,160
have enough of that with spell slots
1272
00:41:26,319 --> 00:41:29,839
like there's already enough of like
1273
00:41:28,160 --> 00:41:32,000
here's a fourth level spell
1274
00:41:29,839 --> 00:41:33,760
[ __ ] the enemy made this save well that
1275
00:41:32,000 --> 00:41:35,839
was a waste of that slot today which you
1276
00:41:33,760 --> 00:41:37,040
know which is already enough of
1277
00:41:35,839 --> 00:41:39,359
a resource
1278
00:41:37,040 --> 00:41:41,119
experiment so i think having items that
1279
00:41:39,359 --> 00:41:43,440
are a bit more flexible than that
1280
00:41:41,119 --> 00:41:44,480
definitely the way to go there yeah how
1281
00:41:43,440 --> 00:41:46,560
about you is there any items you
1282
00:41:44,480 --> 00:41:49,200
regretted giving your players oh
1283
00:41:46,560 --> 00:41:51,280
so you know funnily enough
1284
00:41:49,200 --> 00:41:52,319
yes one came to mind
1285
00:41:51,280 --> 00:41:54,560
right then because you said
1286
00:41:52,319 --> 00:41:56,480
over-complicating items and that is a
1287
00:41:54,560 --> 00:41:57,839
pitfall you know i i like doing this
1288
00:41:56,480 --> 00:41:59,200
podcast because i like
1289
00:41:57,839 --> 00:42:01,920
letting other people learn from my
1290
00:41:59,200 --> 00:42:04,560
mistakes and this is one where i feel
1291
00:42:01,920 --> 00:42:07,440
it's not you know egregious but it it
1292
00:42:04,560 --> 00:42:09,839
definitely is one where
1293
00:42:07,440 --> 00:42:12,400
in my in my campaign there are
1294
00:42:09,839 --> 00:42:14,560
eight or ten basically super magical
1295
00:42:12,400 --> 00:42:16,240
macguffin artifacts
1296
00:42:14,560 --> 00:42:18,640
and the players on the request together
1297
00:42:16,240 --> 00:42:19,280
they got one and
1298
00:42:18,640 --> 00:42:21,839
i
1299
00:42:19,280 --> 00:42:23,520
i think i'd picked it up in my head a
1300
00:42:21,839 --> 00:42:25,760
little bit more than necessary so i
1301
00:42:23,520 --> 00:42:27,119
wanted it to be like oh it does this but
1302
00:42:25,760 --> 00:42:29,440
it needs a little bit more so it does
1303
00:42:27,119 --> 00:42:32,800
this as well and it's a suit of armor
1304
00:42:29,440 --> 00:42:35,760
but it it does a whole bunch of really
1305
00:42:32,800 --> 00:42:37,599
niche context specific things that
1306
00:42:35,760 --> 00:42:40,880
really aren't getting seen the light of
1307
00:42:37,599 --> 00:42:42,960
day so yeah it really swung from like
1308
00:42:40,880 --> 00:42:45,200
this is sick to
1309
00:42:42,960 --> 00:42:46,640
oh yeah he's got that evil armor on and
1310
00:42:45,200 --> 00:42:49,040
that's what it's boiled down to and
1311
00:42:46,640 --> 00:42:50,880
that's kind of sad to have this [ __ ]
1312
00:42:49,040 --> 00:42:53,040
yeah to have this like really cool big
1313
00:42:50,880 --> 00:42:54,960
you know centerpiece item
1314
00:42:53,040 --> 00:42:56,400
boiled down to he's wearing big spiky
1315
00:42:54,960 --> 00:42:57,920
i'm a lull
1316
00:42:56,400 --> 00:43:00,240
and that's a failing on my part which is
1317
00:42:57,920 --> 00:43:02,079
why uh you know it's it's it's good
1318
00:43:00,240 --> 00:43:03,680
opportunity to have these these
1319
00:43:02,079 --> 00:43:04,480
discussions and these thoughts because
1320
00:43:03,680 --> 00:43:08,000
it's
1321
00:43:04,480 --> 00:43:10,079
so everyone can can not do that
1322
00:43:08,000 --> 00:43:11,440
but yeah so it was basically like plus
1323
00:43:10,079 --> 00:43:13,359
some ac
1324
00:43:11,440 --> 00:43:16,560
and because it was like you know ancient
1325
00:43:13,359 --> 00:43:18,160
and fiendish he has
1326
00:43:16,560 --> 00:43:19,200
telepathy
1327
00:43:18,160 --> 00:43:22,160
with
1328
00:43:19,200 --> 00:43:24,720
fiends within 60 foot which of course
1329
00:43:22,160 --> 00:43:27,359
has just led him to going is it a fiend
1330
00:43:24,720 --> 00:43:29,040
no next enemy is it a fiend no this is
1331
00:43:27,359 --> 00:43:30,880
just the shopkeeper
1332
00:43:29,040 --> 00:43:32,480
is it a fiend okay this one is flying
1333
00:43:30,880 --> 00:43:34,960
with leathery wings but it's technically
1334
00:43:32,480 --> 00:43:37,520
a demon so no
1335
00:43:34,960 --> 00:43:40,160
so yeah that's led to just like so far
1336
00:43:37,520 --> 00:43:42,079
just a disappointment um which is well
1337
00:43:40,160 --> 00:43:43,440
done down low great um
1338
00:43:42,079 --> 00:43:46,480
and then there's another one that means
1339
00:43:43,440 --> 00:43:48,400
another ability where it's like if he
1340
00:43:46,480 --> 00:43:51,440
is subject to a an effect that would
1341
00:43:48,400 --> 00:43:53,280
move him so like thunder wave or even
1342
00:43:51,440 --> 00:43:55,440
being just shoved
1343
00:43:53,280 --> 00:43:57,680
he is i think it's just a like flower
1344
00:43:55,440 --> 00:43:59,440
immune or like immune to the first 10
1345
00:43:57,680 --> 00:44:01,440
foot of movement or something
1346
00:43:59,440 --> 00:44:03,040
um which again sounds great on paper
1347
00:44:01,440 --> 00:44:05,119
it's like i can't be pushed anymore
1348
00:44:03,040 --> 00:44:07,040
except that every creature you're going
1349
00:44:05,119 --> 00:44:09,839
to fight from now on won't ever have
1350
00:44:07,040 --> 00:44:09,839
that ability here
1351
00:44:10,560 --> 00:44:14,880
so finding those items which
1352
00:44:13,280 --> 00:44:18,640
as we've touched upon earlier on are
1353
00:44:14,880 --> 00:44:19,680
like always useful and always fun to use
1354
00:44:18,640 --> 00:44:22,480
i think
1355
00:44:19,680 --> 00:44:24,720
is is tricky and so
1356
00:44:22,480 --> 00:44:26,640
setting dependent yeah
1357
00:44:24,720 --> 00:44:28,240
exactly but uh yeah you still find
1358
00:44:26,640 --> 00:44:29,200
success you know i would say more often
1359
00:44:28,240 --> 00:44:30,560
than not they're at least excited
1360
00:44:29,200 --> 00:44:32,000
because it's just fun to find an item
1361
00:44:30,560 --> 00:44:33,680
and then you know when you give them so
1362
00:44:32,000 --> 00:44:36,480
many it's it's actually not that big a
1363
00:44:33,680 --> 00:44:37,680
deal some of them aren't successful
1364
00:44:36,480 --> 00:44:40,079
really you're really layering on the
1365
00:44:37,680 --> 00:44:42,319
benefits here of your like uh
1366
00:44:40,079 --> 00:44:43,720
multi-item
1367
00:44:42,319 --> 00:44:46,480
it's great not having to prepare
1368
00:44:43,720 --> 00:44:47,599
[Laughter]
1369
00:44:46,480 --> 00:44:49,839
um
1370
00:44:47,599 --> 00:44:52,480
none of the others really spring to mind
1371
00:44:49,839 --> 00:44:54,720
to me the only other thing that i'm
1372
00:44:52,480 --> 00:44:57,599
not super keen on is straight plus plus
1373
00:44:54,720 --> 00:45:00,160
weapons which is a symptom of not having
1374
00:44:57,599 --> 00:45:02,160
as many items as you because the few
1375
00:45:00,160 --> 00:45:03,839
they do find i want them to be
1376
00:45:02,160 --> 00:45:04,800
spectacular which i know after what i've
1377
00:45:03,839 --> 00:45:08,000
just said
1378
00:45:04,800 --> 00:45:09,920
that even that fails sometimes but
1379
00:45:08,000 --> 00:45:11,920
to me you know a plus one item isn't
1380
00:45:09,920 --> 00:45:14,880
especially that level nine soon to be
1381
00:45:11,920 --> 00:45:17,760
ten so oh mazel tov that's a big big big
1382
00:45:14,880 --> 00:45:19,440
level yes yeah thank you uh i'll let
1383
00:45:17,760 --> 00:45:20,240
them know because they think every level
1384
00:45:19,440 --> 00:45:21,440
up is
1385
00:45:20,240 --> 00:45:24,160
something they should be getting every
1386
00:45:21,440 --> 00:45:25,920
episode anyway um but yes no i don't
1387
00:45:24,160 --> 00:45:27,440
know they just seem a bit uninspired to
1388
00:45:25,920 --> 00:45:29,040
me but
1389
00:45:27,440 --> 00:45:32,079
having that extra flavor like you talked
1390
00:45:29,040 --> 00:45:34,000
about earlier on is is maybe my fix to
1391
00:45:32,079 --> 00:45:37,200
it's it's a plus one but
1392
00:45:34,000 --> 00:45:39,359
oh and it's it's a plus one and
1393
00:45:37,200 --> 00:45:40,560
uh i feel like there's a dm skilled
1394
00:45:39,359 --> 00:45:43,119
product in that
1395
00:45:40,560 --> 00:45:44,720
plus and or something like that you know
1396
00:45:43,119 --> 00:45:46,880
weapon plus and or something like that
1397
00:45:44,720 --> 00:45:48,560
is the name that sounds all right uh and
1398
00:45:46,880 --> 00:45:50,560
it's it's a list of plus plus items that
1399
00:45:48,560 --> 00:45:52,960
have got little flourishes on them to do
1400
00:45:50,560 --> 00:45:55,359
other bits and bobs which i know
1401
00:45:52,960 --> 00:45:58,560
i've read before a lot of
1402
00:45:55,359 --> 00:46:00,880
people say you know to give a plus items
1403
00:45:58,560 --> 00:46:02,720
some extra flavor is is you know
1404
00:46:00,880 --> 00:46:04,800
describe them they are you know like
1405
00:46:02,720 --> 00:46:06,480
dracula's sword that's ornate and this
1406
00:46:04,800 --> 00:46:07,520
then it's got gems set down here but
1407
00:46:06,480 --> 00:46:10,000
that's so
1408
00:46:07,520 --> 00:46:11,520
i love it because i love theming and
1409
00:46:10,000 --> 00:46:13,040
aesthetic and stuff but the moment
1410
00:46:11,520 --> 00:46:14,400
you're in combat and again depending on
1411
00:46:13,040 --> 00:46:16,079
the player that could just be forgotten
1412
00:46:14,400 --> 00:46:18,400
about in an instant and is therefore
1413
00:46:16,079 --> 00:46:20,640
back to being nothing so um and that
1414
00:46:18,400 --> 00:46:22,319
makes sense yeah i will think about this
1415
00:46:20,640 --> 00:46:23,200
now i want to go back and think about it
1416
00:46:22,319 --> 00:46:24,319
uh
1417
00:46:23,200 --> 00:46:25,520
but um
1418
00:46:24,319 --> 00:46:27,599
on that
1419
00:46:25,520 --> 00:46:28,960
a similar train of thought
1420
00:46:27,599 --> 00:46:31,839
there are some
1421
00:46:28,960 --> 00:46:35,599
items which
1422
00:46:31,839 --> 00:46:36,480
uh almost like essential adventuring kit
1423
00:46:35,599 --> 00:46:38,000
so
1424
00:46:36,480 --> 00:46:39,280
i mean i presume your players have got a
1425
00:46:38,000 --> 00:46:40,400
bag of holding
1426
00:46:39,280 --> 00:46:42,079
uh
1427
00:46:40,400 --> 00:46:43,599
i don't think they do actually oh no
1428
00:46:42,079 --> 00:46:45,200
come on you can't you can't you can't
1429
00:46:43,599 --> 00:46:47,119
spend 15 minutes talking about how many
1430
00:46:45,200 --> 00:46:49,119
items your lucky players get and not and
1431
00:46:47,119 --> 00:46:51,200
they don't have a bag of holding yeah
1432
00:46:49,119 --> 00:46:52,800
they probably do
1433
00:46:51,200 --> 00:46:54,000
what is this upside down world i'm
1434
00:46:52,800 --> 00:46:55,520
living
1435
00:46:54,000 --> 00:46:57,280
at some point at least it's not an issue
1436
00:46:55,520 --> 00:46:58,319
where they fit everything
1437
00:46:57,280 --> 00:46:59,520
well that's the thing is they keep
1438
00:46:58,319 --> 00:47:00,880
merging all their items so they actually
1439
00:46:59,520 --> 00:47:03,040
don't have a ton of magic items on them
1440
00:47:00,880 --> 00:47:04,400
at all times ah are they making a lot of
1441
00:47:03,040 --> 00:47:06,240
use out of that thing then that forge
1442
00:47:04,400 --> 00:47:08,240
yeah yeah
1443
00:47:06,240 --> 00:47:10,240
that's cool i was gonna well i was gonna
1444
00:47:08,240 --> 00:47:13,040
say like i i seem to think that
1445
00:47:10,240 --> 00:47:14,560
basically a bag of holding is
1446
00:47:13,040 --> 00:47:16,960
uh
1447
00:47:14,560 --> 00:47:19,119
mandatory adventures baby's first magic
1448
00:47:16,960 --> 00:47:21,599
item yeah yeah for sure and then then
1449
00:47:19,119 --> 00:47:23,760
that kind of begs the question of like
1450
00:47:21,599 --> 00:47:26,240
for for newer dms it's just lost in the
1451
00:47:23,760 --> 00:47:28,160
in the uh in the dungeon masters guide
1452
00:47:26,240 --> 00:47:29,760
but it takes a little bit of experience
1453
00:47:28,160 --> 00:47:32,319
to to find it and to see it and to
1454
00:47:29,760 --> 00:47:34,480
realize that it's super useful and they
1455
00:47:32,319 --> 00:47:36,400
should really have one uh
1456
00:47:34,480 --> 00:47:38,000
so on and so on
1457
00:47:36,400 --> 00:47:39,599
i don't know it almost seems like it
1458
00:47:38,000 --> 00:47:42,400
should have it's like there should be
1459
00:47:39,599 --> 00:47:44,480
their own section in the dmg that says
1460
00:47:42,400 --> 00:47:45,760
like these are
1461
00:47:44,480 --> 00:47:48,640
really
1462
00:47:45,760 --> 00:47:50,319
typical useful adventuring items that
1463
00:47:48,640 --> 00:47:52,559
you might want to think about having
1464
00:47:50,319 --> 00:47:54,559
with your players
1465
00:47:52,559 --> 00:47:56,960
what do you think about that or my wider
1466
00:47:54,559 --> 00:47:58,240
mark there oh god i don't even know how
1467
00:47:56,960 --> 00:48:00,000
to take that one in
1468
00:47:58,240 --> 00:48:01,440
we've we've said so many interesting
1469
00:48:00,000 --> 00:48:03,680
things that one might be a little too
1470
00:48:01,440 --> 00:48:03,680
much
1471
00:48:04,480 --> 00:48:08,880
it's happened i finally got to this
1472
00:48:06,160 --> 00:48:11,440
place as a host where i'm
1473
00:48:08,880 --> 00:48:15,440
i'm bamboozling the guest
1474
00:48:11,440 --> 00:48:15,440
questions this filthy yankee i am
1475
00:48:16,640 --> 00:48:20,720
um because like every every campaign
1476
00:48:18,720 --> 00:48:22,160
i've played in there's a bag holding how
1477
00:48:20,720 --> 00:48:24,559
many players put the bag holding in a
1478
00:48:22,160 --> 00:48:26,400
bag of holding well not many because i
1479
00:48:24,559 --> 00:48:28,000
think there's a meta understanding there
1480
00:48:26,400 --> 00:48:29,599
that it's probably uh
1481
00:48:28,000 --> 00:48:30,000
not a good idea but that doesn't stop
1482
00:48:29,599 --> 00:48:32,400
players
1483
00:48:30,000 --> 00:48:35,040
[Laughter]
1484
00:48:32,400 --> 00:48:36,960
uh he was who's i was i was recording
1485
00:48:35,040 --> 00:48:39,119
recently and a guest was telling me that
1486
00:48:36,960 --> 00:48:40,559
um one of their players
1487
00:48:39,119 --> 00:48:42,160
uh one of their players they had two
1488
00:48:40,559 --> 00:48:43,839
bags holding in the party
1489
00:48:42,160 --> 00:48:45,760
one of the owners of one of them went
1490
00:48:43,839 --> 00:48:48,079
down was killed or incapacitated and
1491
00:48:45,760 --> 00:48:49,920
whatnot and to transport the body they
1492
00:48:48,079 --> 00:48:51,359
slung it in the other bag of holding and
1493
00:48:49,920 --> 00:48:53,040
it wasn't until they were slung in that
1494
00:48:51,359 --> 00:48:54,559
they were like oh
1495
00:48:53,040 --> 00:48:55,839
[ __ ] didn't that person have their own
1496
00:48:54,559 --> 00:48:56,720
bagger holding
1497
00:48:55,839 --> 00:48:58,880
uh
1498
00:48:56,720 --> 00:49:00,839
so there's i mean i guess it can happen
1499
00:48:58,880 --> 00:49:02,960
you know benignly
1500
00:49:00,839 --> 00:49:04,400
innocently just know people usually will
1501
00:49:02,960 --> 00:49:06,480
do that like to self-sacrifice
1502
00:49:04,400 --> 00:49:08,079
themselves to take down a big bad it's
1503
00:49:06,480 --> 00:49:10,319
little you know get eaten on purpose and
1504
00:49:08,079 --> 00:49:12,319
then you know create the tactical nuke
1505
00:49:10,319 --> 00:49:13,599
yay
1506
00:49:12,319 --> 00:49:14,800
tactical nuke
1507
00:49:13,599 --> 00:49:16,800
um
1508
00:49:14,800 --> 00:49:18,720
yeah that's okay now i can't have my
1509
00:49:16,800 --> 00:49:19,839
players listen to this because they'll
1510
00:49:18,720 --> 00:49:21,359
go out and
1511
00:49:19,839 --> 00:49:22,640
desperately try and find a second one
1512
00:49:21,359 --> 00:49:24,000
and then that's where i'm gonna have to
1513
00:49:22,640 --> 00:49:25,370
be like oh didn't you know you've got
1514
00:49:24,000 --> 00:49:29,440
the only one anyway
1515
00:49:25,370 --> 00:49:31,680
[Laughter]
1516
00:49:29,440 --> 00:49:34,000
yeah so all i mean is that like they're
1517
00:49:31,680 --> 00:49:37,119
just they're just like sending stones as
1518
00:49:34,000 --> 00:49:38,800
well which i i know again if you have a
1519
00:49:37,119 --> 00:49:40,480
you know one or two spellcasters in your
1520
00:49:38,800 --> 00:49:41,680
party they diminish in
1521
00:49:40,480 --> 00:49:44,880
usefulness
1522
00:49:41,680 --> 00:49:47,119
as the levels go on but for most newbie
1523
00:49:44,880 --> 00:49:48,800
parties it feels like they're just
1524
00:49:47,119 --> 00:49:51,520
they're just like mandatory adventuring
1525
00:49:48,800 --> 00:49:53,359
kit yeah what i'm getting at is if most
1526
00:49:51,520 --> 00:49:56,000
adventurers need this mandatory
1527
00:49:53,359 --> 00:49:57,280
adventuring kit it just is like
1528
00:49:56,000 --> 00:49:58,960
i'm really i'm struggling to articulate
1529
00:49:57,280 --> 00:50:00,800
but it's just like not boring in a way
1530
00:49:58,960 --> 00:50:02,160
but like just a given it's not it takes
1531
00:50:00,800 --> 00:50:03,920
the mystique away from them a little bit
1532
00:50:02,160 --> 00:50:05,760
and i i don't know whether that was ever
1533
00:50:03,920 --> 00:50:08,640
intended i mean i feel like you need to
1534
00:50:05,760 --> 00:50:10,240
have some sort of baseline to really be
1535
00:50:08,640 --> 00:50:12,079
able to play with it because if players
1536
00:50:10,240 --> 00:50:14,480
don't have a sense of normality how are
1537
00:50:12,079 --> 00:50:15,760
they supposed to know what isn't normal
1538
00:50:14,480 --> 00:50:17,280
i mean people in the real world go
1539
00:50:15,760 --> 00:50:19,280
hiking with the same things and the hike
1540
00:50:17,280 --> 00:50:20,720
is still exciting
1541
00:50:19,280 --> 00:50:22,319
you know it's what you do on the hike
1542
00:50:20,720 --> 00:50:23,920
that makes it interesting and who you're
1543
00:50:22,319 --> 00:50:26,240
with it's the friends we make along the
1544
00:50:23,920 --> 00:50:27,440
way exactly so i i think it's perfectly
1545
00:50:26,240 --> 00:50:29,119
fine if everyone starts with the same
1546
00:50:27,440 --> 00:50:31,440
items and there is of course times where
1547
00:50:29,119 --> 00:50:32,720
you can play around with that but yeah i
1548
00:50:31,440 --> 00:50:33,839
i really don't think it's that big of a
1549
00:50:32,720 --> 00:50:34,800
deal
1550
00:50:33,839 --> 00:50:37,200
okay
1551
00:50:34,800 --> 00:50:38,720
okay i might because i'm
1552
00:50:37,200 --> 00:50:41,119
longer term planning to run this
1553
00:50:38,720 --> 00:50:43,119
campaign again and where did i
1554
00:50:41,119 --> 00:50:46,400
at some point they got given them by an
1555
00:50:43,119 --> 00:50:47,760
npc and i think i might just mandate in
1556
00:50:46,400 --> 00:50:49,920
the next group of players i'm just going
1557
00:50:47,760 --> 00:50:51,680
to say and you get the speaking stones
1558
00:50:49,920 --> 00:50:54,000
and you get the bag of holding and then
1559
00:50:51,680 --> 00:50:55,359
just be like that it's done and i don't
1560
00:50:54,000 --> 00:50:57,839
have to worry about it before you've
1561
00:50:55,359 --> 00:50:59,359
even started you guys have who cares it
1562
00:50:57,839 --> 00:51:01,280
was a long-lost relic blah blah blah
1563
00:50:59,359 --> 00:51:03,359
your grandma found it in the basement
1564
00:51:01,280 --> 00:51:05,040
whatever doesn't matter you've got and
1565
00:51:03,359 --> 00:51:06,079
then we don't i don't have to have this
1566
00:51:05,040 --> 00:51:08,480
hello
1567
00:51:06,079 --> 00:51:10,400
i'm your friendly neighborhood
1568
00:51:08,480 --> 00:51:14,160
yeah quest guide here's your items that
1569
00:51:10,400 --> 00:51:15,280
you'll need uh that's all right
1570
00:51:14,160 --> 00:51:16,960
i heard
1571
00:51:15,280 --> 00:51:18,720
uh again this is this is gonna be an
1572
00:51:16,960 --> 00:51:20,559
interesting question i think well for me
1573
00:51:18,720 --> 00:51:22,480
at least for you it's probably boring as
1574
00:51:20,559 --> 00:51:24,640
hell but um
1575
00:51:22,480 --> 00:51:27,040
i mentioned earlier on the like the loot
1576
00:51:24,640 --> 00:51:30,960
table was the roll tables for you're in
1577
00:51:27,040 --> 00:51:33,040
a dragons hoard bro for what you find
1578
00:51:30,960 --> 00:51:34,880
actually this could go either way do you
1579
00:51:33,040 --> 00:51:37,119
do you use those
1580
00:51:34,880 --> 00:51:40,000
uh no okay i just i already know what
1581
00:51:37,119 --> 00:51:41,280
they're finding ah okay that's that's
1582
00:51:40,000 --> 00:51:43,040
different i might pretend they're all
1583
00:51:41,280 --> 00:51:44,559
though ah
1584
00:51:43,040 --> 00:51:46,720
okay okay
1585
00:51:44,559 --> 00:51:48,960
because that that's very good segue
1586
00:51:46,720 --> 00:51:50,480
there because what i was building to is
1587
00:51:48,960 --> 00:51:52,400
i'm
1588
00:51:50,480 --> 00:51:54,000
a fan of having
1589
00:51:52,400 --> 00:51:55,119
like the magical items make sense which
1590
00:51:54,000 --> 00:51:56,400
is probably why there's less of them
1591
00:51:55,119 --> 00:51:58,640
because i don't haven't been to very
1592
00:51:56,400 --> 00:52:00,400
exotic places yet but i always like the
1593
00:51:58,640 --> 00:52:02,319
magic items to make sense in the world
1594
00:52:00,400 --> 00:52:05,839
and where they are and it's not just
1595
00:52:02,319 --> 00:52:07,680
like a random nine live stealer on a
1596
00:52:05,839 --> 00:52:09,200
skeleton on a skeleton in the middle of
1597
00:52:07,680 --> 00:52:11,440
a dungeon somewhere
1598
00:52:09,200 --> 00:52:13,520
that's like what the [ __ ] why is this
1599
00:52:11,440 --> 00:52:15,200
this is this is this is a
1600
00:52:13,520 --> 00:52:17,119
screw the rest of the dungeon we're done
1601
00:52:15,200 --> 00:52:19,680
like
1602
00:52:17,119 --> 00:52:20,800
so does that is that why you already
1603
00:52:19,680 --> 00:52:22,960
know what they're going to get because
1604
00:52:20,800 --> 00:52:24,240
it makes sense in context
1605
00:52:22,960 --> 00:52:25,920
yeah because again everything is
1606
00:52:24,240 --> 00:52:28,160
tailored around the player experience so
1607
00:52:25,920 --> 00:52:29,599
it's like i want to try and give them
1608
00:52:28,160 --> 00:52:31,200
it's also when there are holes and what
1609
00:52:29,599 --> 00:52:32,640
they can do do you don't really want to
1610
00:52:31,200 --> 00:52:34,079
put up to risk because this could cause
1611
00:52:32,640 --> 00:52:35,280
legitimate issues for the party or make
1612
00:52:34,079 --> 00:52:36,640
it that they have trouble interacting
1613
00:52:35,280 --> 00:52:38,240
with future elements
1614
00:52:36,640 --> 00:52:39,760
so that's why you just want to give it
1615
00:52:38,240 --> 00:52:41,200
to them and then you know there's still
1616
00:52:39,760 --> 00:52:42,800
a sense of randomness for when they're
1617
00:52:41,200 --> 00:52:43,839
crafting these items and that's when you
1618
00:52:42,800 --> 00:52:45,119
kind of have to be like all right how
1619
00:52:43,839 --> 00:52:46,400
did these two items interact which is
1620
00:52:45,119 --> 00:52:47,599
you know effectively almost random
1621
00:52:46,400 --> 00:52:49,440
because you don't know what the players
1622
00:52:47,599 --> 00:52:51,599
want to merge
1623
00:52:49,440 --> 00:52:53,920
yeah yeah so for example earlier when i
1624
00:52:51,599 --> 00:52:56,079
mentioned that like dagger poison which
1625
00:52:53,920 --> 00:52:59,680
was in the kobold dungeon which you know
1626
00:52:56,079 --> 00:53:01,680
koppel was known for their crafty poison
1627
00:52:59,680 --> 00:53:04,559
traps and daggers and
1628
00:53:01,680 --> 00:53:07,359
so that that made super perfect sense to
1629
00:53:04,559 --> 00:53:08,720
be there yeah rather than like
1630
00:53:07,359 --> 00:53:10,079
you know a lot of bastard sword or a
1631
00:53:08,720 --> 00:53:11,599
long sword or a great axe or something
1632
00:53:10,079 --> 00:53:13,200
which these three foot cobalts
1633
00:53:11,599 --> 00:53:14,800
definitely aren't using so why on earth
1634
00:53:13,200 --> 00:53:17,920
have they got
1635
00:53:14,800 --> 00:53:20,400
great x so i that's why i
1636
00:53:17,920 --> 00:53:22,640
cherry pick i would say
1637
00:53:20,400 --> 00:53:26,480
so like every every magical item is is
1638
00:53:22,640 --> 00:53:28,240
predetermined so i'm very much at the
1639
00:53:26,480 --> 00:53:30,079
you know it creates more work for me
1640
00:53:28,240 --> 00:53:31,599
because i have to go round about and and
1641
00:53:30,079 --> 00:53:34,800
be like what would make sense here but
1642
00:53:31,599 --> 00:53:37,599
then what's still good for the party and
1643
00:53:34,800 --> 00:53:39,440
you know they have fun and get useful
1644
00:53:37,599 --> 00:53:40,160
you know use out of
1645
00:53:39,440 --> 00:53:43,200
but
1646
00:53:40,160 --> 00:53:45,839
it's yeah probably more work than maybe
1647
00:53:43,200 --> 00:53:47,280
required potentially overkill yeah
1648
00:53:45,839 --> 00:53:49,440
exactly
1649
00:53:47,280 --> 00:53:50,960
and then and then finally uh and that's
1650
00:53:49,440 --> 00:53:54,079
the should be interesting again
1651
00:53:50,960 --> 00:53:56,559
in xanathar's guide to everything they
1652
00:53:54,079 --> 00:53:59,119
brought out they they included a bunch
1653
00:53:56,559 --> 00:54:01,520
of like common and uncommon magical
1654
00:53:59,119 --> 00:54:04,160
items like yeah just just aesthetic and
1655
00:54:01,520 --> 00:54:05,839
theming and vibey ones do you have many
1656
00:54:04,160 --> 00:54:09,200
of those not those specific ones but
1657
00:54:05,839 --> 00:54:10,480
those similar in in style
1658
00:54:09,200 --> 00:54:12,000
uh do you mind giving me an example i
1659
00:54:10,480 --> 00:54:14,079
just i haven't read that book oh no
1660
00:54:12,000 --> 00:54:16,240
worries so there's there's like the cape
1661
00:54:14,079 --> 00:54:17,680
of billowing and it's literally like as
1662
00:54:16,240 --> 00:54:19,440
an action you can cause your cape to
1663
00:54:17,680 --> 00:54:20,640
billow you know majestically like a
1664
00:54:19,440 --> 00:54:25,599
superhero
1665
00:54:20,640 --> 00:54:28,079
or there's a uh there's a pipe of
1666
00:54:25,599 --> 00:54:29,760
smoke monsters where when you puff like
1667
00:54:28,079 --> 00:54:32,240
it's like gandalf's pipe and you can
1668
00:54:29,760 --> 00:54:34,559
cause the smoke to take the form of
1669
00:54:32,240 --> 00:54:36,799
various things there's
1670
00:54:34,559 --> 00:54:39,599
the wand of conducting and it's like you
1671
00:54:36,799 --> 00:54:40,960
know uh wind waker zelda wind waker wand
1672
00:54:39,599 --> 00:54:43,359
where you can just throw it you can just
1673
00:54:40,960 --> 00:54:44,559
wave it in the air and everybody hears
1674
00:54:43,359 --> 00:54:46,720
music
1675
00:54:44,559 --> 00:54:48,160
i think there's one that's like a it's a
1676
00:54:46,720 --> 00:54:49,920
walking cane
1677
00:54:48,160 --> 00:54:50,960
but it can turn into just a regular long
1678
00:54:49,920 --> 00:54:52,880
sword
1679
00:54:50,960 --> 00:54:55,440
so i know there's like stealth
1680
00:54:52,880 --> 00:54:57,599
yeah you know elements there but most of
1681
00:54:55,440 --> 00:55:00,000
them oh there's like a
1682
00:54:57,599 --> 00:55:02,079
i call it a chrono band but it's um an
1683
00:55:00,000 --> 00:55:03,920
orb of time or something that allows the
1684
00:55:02,079 --> 00:55:05,839
person just to know the time of day at
1685
00:55:03,920 --> 00:55:07,520
any given moment oh that's really great
1686
00:55:05,839 --> 00:55:09,520
and also there's one for direction as
1687
00:55:07,520 --> 00:55:10,640
well a compass essentially that works
1688
00:55:09,520 --> 00:55:12,480
you know whether it's not magical it's
1689
00:55:10,640 --> 00:55:14,079
just a compass
1690
00:55:12,480 --> 00:55:15,280
but it's like if you're on the ground or
1691
00:55:14,079 --> 00:55:17,200
wherever wherever you can always it
1692
00:55:15,280 --> 00:55:20,400
always points to wherever you need it to
1693
00:55:17,200 --> 00:55:23,359
point to blah blah so those kind of like
1694
00:55:20,400 --> 00:55:24,880
uh soft magical items that aren't like
1695
00:55:23,359 --> 00:55:26,160
here's a mechanical benefit or here's
1696
00:55:24,880 --> 00:55:29,040
something that could change the tide of
1697
00:55:26,160 --> 00:55:30,400
combat it is it's very much like i have
1698
00:55:29,040 --> 00:55:32,640
a capability because i'm like that's
1699
00:55:30,400 --> 00:55:35,060
sick oh i spent 300 golden looking like
1700
00:55:32,640 --> 00:55:36,559
a superhero all the time yes please
1701
00:55:35,060 --> 00:55:38,880
[Laughter]
1702
00:55:36,559 --> 00:55:40,720
um i'm not sure i would say maybe one
1703
00:55:38,880 --> 00:55:42,480
that's in that kind of tier was i gave
1704
00:55:40,720 --> 00:55:44,079
my players like these rbg potions where
1705
00:55:42,480 --> 00:55:45,200
they kept randomly changing colors so
1706
00:55:44,079 --> 00:55:49,160
when they drank them they could roll on
1707
00:55:45,200 --> 00:55:49,160
the magic wild table once
1708
00:55:50,079 --> 00:55:54,720
how how did that go i think one got the
1709
00:55:52,400 --> 00:55:56,480
teleport ability for six minutes and an
1710
00:55:54,720 --> 00:55:56,930
r1 grew eight feet
1711
00:55:56,480 --> 00:55:58,079
uh
1712
00:55:56,930 --> 00:56:00,559
[Music]
1713
00:55:58,079 --> 00:56:02,640
grew to eight feet okay but he was he
1714
00:56:00,559 --> 00:56:05,200
was uh he was seven foot four so it
1715
00:56:02,640 --> 00:56:07,040
wasn't quite as impressive
1716
00:56:05,200 --> 00:56:08,640
that that's the kind of growth that like
1717
00:56:07,040 --> 00:56:11,200
when you see your mum next she goes oh
1718
00:56:08,640 --> 00:56:12,480
boy haven't you grown yeah yeah yes six
1719
00:56:11,200 --> 00:56:14,960
inches
1720
00:56:12,480 --> 00:56:14,960
i checked
1721
00:56:15,359 --> 00:56:18,240
okay cool well um is there anything you
1722
00:56:17,200 --> 00:56:20,000
wanted to talk about that we might have
1723
00:56:18,240 --> 00:56:21,839
missed no i think that truly covered
1724
00:56:20,000 --> 00:56:24,720
everything yeah
1725
00:56:21,839 --> 00:56:26,880
awesome awesome well thank you so much
1726
00:56:24,720 --> 00:56:28,559
david that was that was very uh
1727
00:56:26,880 --> 00:56:30,960
interesting and entertaining and it's
1728
00:56:28,559 --> 00:56:34,400
always good as a host to be
1729
00:56:30,960 --> 00:56:38,000
uh i mean this nicely challenged on my
1730
00:56:34,400 --> 00:56:39,520
status quo so i very do appreciate your
1731
00:56:38,000 --> 00:56:41,920
joining me on this journey for this
1732
00:56:39,520 --> 00:56:44,079
episode yeah i had an absolute blast
1733
00:56:41,920 --> 00:56:45,359
thank you so much for having me on the
1734
00:56:44,079 --> 00:56:47,920
show it was really fun to be able to
1735
00:56:45,359 --> 00:56:49,520
talk to about d and d ah awesome awesome
1736
00:56:47,920 --> 00:56:52,079
my pleasure uh is there anything you
1737
00:56:49,520 --> 00:56:53,760
would like to promote yes absolutely i'd
1738
00:56:52,079 --> 00:56:55,839
love to promote my show shown in flop as
1739
00:56:53,760 --> 00:56:57,920
we talked about where um as i said it's
1740
00:56:55,839 --> 00:57:00,000
the start of the show my host and i read
1741
00:56:57,920 --> 00:57:01,839
a lot of kind of usually pretty bad
1742
00:57:00,000 --> 00:57:03,359
manga but sometimes we find some gems
1743
00:57:01,839 --> 00:57:05,119
with a guest we've had some really fun
1744
00:57:03,359 --> 00:57:08,079
people we had sean from anime out of
1745
00:57:05,119 --> 00:57:09,520
context we've had jeffrow from mother's
1746
00:57:08,079 --> 00:57:11,280
basement was a really exciting guest we
1747
00:57:09,520 --> 00:57:12,720
had tim bat from the worst of idea of
1748
00:57:11,280 --> 00:57:14,319
all time and we're actually going to
1749
00:57:12,720 --> 00:57:16,000
have one of the creators of dragon ball
1750
00:57:14,319 --> 00:57:18,480
z the abridged series coming on the show
1751
00:57:16,000 --> 00:57:20,799
in a few weeks so uh we've got some
1752
00:57:18,480 --> 00:57:21,839
really exciting uh episodes coming up
1753
00:57:20,799 --> 00:57:23,920

1754
00:57:21,839 --> 00:57:27,680

A long-time DND player I'm also the host of the Shonen Flop podcast, a show where we review lesser known manga.
