Adaptation

I am once again joined by Manny a.k.a. Growed Up Geek to talk about adaptation. One great way to kill two birds with one stone is by integrating player character backstories into published adventure modules; not only do you get to customise the module and make it unique, by the players feel embedded in the world and get to make it their own. As for DMing, there are two kinds of adaptation: Micro - that moment-to-moment, immediate response to player actions, and macro - adapting the world in response to the dynamic plot. For both, the DM is part charlatan, part conman, part magician, and the ratio between those three is hugely variable. It's a unique proposition! Manny and I also share our tips for allaying that newer DM fear of "what the heck am I meant to be doing?" Ultimately, don't put undue pressure on yourself, no one is expecting global level talent from any given DM. This is a street that goes both ways, as at the core of D&D is generally being a decent human. Many problems, both in-universe and at the table can be resolved with compassion and empathy.

1
00:00:00,560 --> 00:00:06,540
welcome thinkers to season 3 episode 7.

2
00:00:03,280 --> 00:00:15,160
today's topic is adaptation

3
00:00:06,540 --> 00:00:15,190
[Music]

4
00:00:15,160 --> 00:00:25,680
[Applause]

5
00:00:15,190 --> 00:00:29,279
[Music]

6
00:00:25,680 --> 00:00:30,640
and today i'm joined once more by manny

7
00:00:29,279 --> 00:00:32,480
thank you ever so much for joining us

8
00:00:30,640 --> 00:00:34,800
today manny can you tell us again a

9
00:00:32,480 --> 00:00:37,120
little bit about yourself hi i'm uh

10
00:00:34,800 --> 00:00:39,920
manny at growed up geek on most of the

11
00:00:37,120 --> 00:00:42,719
social medias if not all i'm a

12
00:00:39,920 --> 00:00:44,879
just a regular 42 year old dad who also

13
00:00:42,719 --> 00:00:47,360
streams uh some dungeons dragons fifth

14
00:00:44,879 --> 00:00:49,920
edition on twitch long term campaigns

15
00:00:47,360 --> 00:00:52,800
one of which is an adventure module

16
00:00:49,920 --> 00:00:54,640
which is kind of the the talk of the day

17
00:00:52,800 --> 00:00:57,440
and uh one of them ironically enough is

18
00:00:54,640 --> 00:00:59,920
also a homebrew so okay okay and of

19
00:00:57,440 --> 00:01:01,920
course for those that that uh have maybe

20
00:00:59,920 --> 00:01:04,000
joined us more recently manny you

21
00:01:01,920 --> 00:01:05,680
previously joined us well hopefully by

22
00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:08,320
the time this goes out almost a year ago

23
00:01:05,680 --> 00:01:10,560
to the day for season one episode eight

24
00:01:08,320 --> 00:01:11,840
on emotion so

25
00:01:10,560 --> 00:01:14,000
yeah you're

26
00:01:11,840 --> 00:01:16,320
a veteran of the show

27
00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:19,600
yes and things coming first full circle

28
00:01:16,320 --> 00:01:22,479
as well yes indeed uh however the topic

29
00:01:19,600 --> 00:01:24,400
of today's is adaptation

30
00:01:22,479 --> 00:01:25,680
so what does that mean to you in the d d

31
00:01:24,400 --> 00:01:26,400
framework

32
00:01:25,680 --> 00:01:29,119
for

33
00:01:26,400 --> 00:01:31,520
me one of the things is that

34
00:01:29,119 --> 00:01:32,640
i feel in the kind of

35
00:01:31,520 --> 00:01:35,119
niches

36
00:01:32,640 --> 00:01:36,159
of like the dungeons dragons community

37
00:01:35,119 --> 00:01:39,439
there's this

38
00:01:36,159 --> 00:01:42,320
kind of negative connotation to

39
00:01:39,439 --> 00:01:43,280
the adventure module

40
00:01:42,320 --> 00:01:44,720
and

41
00:01:43,280 --> 00:01:46,960
at the

42
00:01:44,720 --> 00:01:48,720
end of the day i think that

43
00:01:46,960 --> 00:01:51,119
i think it's unfair you know i've come

44
00:01:48,720 --> 00:01:52,799
to praise the adventure module not not

45
00:01:51,119 --> 00:01:55,200
to bury it

46
00:01:52,799 --> 00:01:57,119
and i think that what they've had is

47
00:01:55,200 --> 00:01:59,280
like poor adaptation

48
00:01:57,119 --> 00:02:01,840
of an adventure module and that has

49
00:01:59,280 --> 00:02:05,520
painted their opinion thereof

50
00:02:01,840 --> 00:02:08,239
and i think that adapting things uh

51
00:02:05,520 --> 00:02:11,120
whether it's movies or adventure modules

52
00:02:08,239 --> 00:02:13,120
is part of the the fun and the challenge

53
00:02:11,120 --> 00:02:14,480
and there's a bunch of great things that

54
00:02:13,120 --> 00:02:16,640
could come from it

55
00:02:14,480 --> 00:02:18,400
and if people would just let it

56
00:02:16,640 --> 00:02:20,640
let like let it be like like you know

57
00:02:18,400 --> 00:02:23,200
not kind of just denigrate the adventure

58
00:02:20,640 --> 00:02:26,000
module as a concept like constantly or

59
00:02:23,200 --> 00:02:28,400
to look at homebrew as like the superior

60
00:02:26,000 --> 00:02:30,560
version in that in those circles of

61
00:02:28,400 --> 00:02:31,760
the internet community

62
00:02:30,560 --> 00:02:33,519
no i think i think you're absolutely

63
00:02:31,760 --> 00:02:37,280
right i'm

64
00:02:33,519 --> 00:02:39,680
as you're aware my my long form campaign

65
00:02:37,280 --> 00:02:40,959
is home brew and i don't i didn't make

66
00:02:39,680 --> 00:02:42,959
that choice because i thought publishing

67
00:02:40,959 --> 00:02:44,319
mentioned module was bad i made that

68
00:02:42,959 --> 00:02:46,080
choice because

69
00:02:44,319 --> 00:02:48,640
in my arrogance i thought i could do

70
00:02:46,080 --> 00:02:48,640
things better

71
00:02:48,959 --> 00:02:54,400
which is obviously you know patently

72
00:02:51,599 --> 00:02:55,360
incorrect half the time um

73
00:02:54,400 --> 00:02:56,879
but um

74
00:02:55,360 --> 00:02:58,319
so so you say that there's a bit of a

75
00:02:56,879 --> 00:02:59,760
negative connotation around them which

76
00:02:58,319 --> 00:03:00,720
i'm inclined to agree with you know a

77
00:02:59,760 --> 00:03:02,319
lot of the

78
00:03:00,720 --> 00:03:05,360
the grapevine

79
00:03:02,319 --> 00:03:06,720
seems to lean that way and you mentioned

80
00:03:05,360 --> 00:03:09,200
is because people have had a poor

81
00:03:06,720 --> 00:03:10,640
experience with how that module's been

82
00:03:09,200 --> 00:03:13,200
adapted

83
00:03:10,640 --> 00:03:15,040
so have you got any you know

84
00:03:13,200 --> 00:03:16,560
what are those kind of poor adaptations

85
00:03:15,040 --> 00:03:19,200
and what are those kind of poor

86
00:03:16,560 --> 00:03:21,200
modifications that lead to that

87
00:03:19,200 --> 00:03:22,480
that bad taste left in the players

88
00:03:21,200 --> 00:03:24,879
mouths

89
00:03:22,480 --> 00:03:27,760
so when i was on the first time uh we

90
00:03:24,879 --> 00:03:30,000
were talking about emotion and one of my

91
00:03:27,760 --> 00:03:33,120
big like cornerstone thoughts in that is

92
00:03:30,000 --> 00:03:35,440
the idea of emotional investment from

93
00:03:33,120 --> 00:03:38,720
your players to get them

94
00:03:35,440 --> 00:03:41,040
invested in more than just

95
00:03:38,720 --> 00:03:43,280
whatever the you know the the scribbling

96
00:03:41,040 --> 00:03:45,440
on the cover says you know adventure in

97
00:03:43,280 --> 00:03:46,480
icelandale you know tomb of annihilation

98
00:03:45,440 --> 00:03:47,519
whatever

99
00:03:46,480 --> 00:03:48,400
that

100
00:03:47,519 --> 00:03:50,640
if

101
00:03:48,400 --> 00:03:52,400
because of the way wizards of the coast

102
00:03:50,640 --> 00:03:53,519
operates and it's this is just a

103
00:03:52,400 --> 00:03:56,720
business

104
00:03:53,519 --> 00:03:58,480
producing mass media in a small way and

105
00:03:56,720 --> 00:04:00,959
saying that you have to make this

106
00:03:58,480 --> 00:04:03,200
attractive or palatable to as many

107
00:04:00,959 --> 00:04:04,319
people as possible

108
00:04:03,200 --> 00:04:06,400
and

109
00:04:04,319 --> 00:04:08,720
not every table is the same obviously

110
00:04:06,400 --> 00:04:10,080
not every dungeon master is the same

111
00:04:08,720 --> 00:04:12,560
so

112
00:04:10,080 --> 00:04:16,160
the pre-published adventure is

113
00:04:12,560 --> 00:04:18,560
essentially a starting point for

114
00:04:16,160 --> 00:04:21,199
what could be a you know an amazing

115
00:04:18,560 --> 00:04:23,759
campaign for your table

116
00:04:21,199 --> 00:04:26,800
but you have to be willing to do some

117
00:04:23,759 --> 00:04:28,960
work with it as well it is not perfect

118
00:04:26,800 --> 00:04:30,400
right from opening the book running it

119
00:04:28,960 --> 00:04:32,000
cover to cover

120
00:04:30,400 --> 00:04:32,960
i don't know that they're designed for

121
00:04:32,000 --> 00:04:36,400
that

122
00:04:32,960 --> 00:04:37,759
and so if that's how they are run for

123
00:04:36,400 --> 00:04:41,520
you just

124
00:04:37,759 --> 00:04:43,440
your plot hooks are your own there's no

125
00:04:41,520 --> 00:04:45,040
personal narrative for

126
00:04:43,440 --> 00:04:46,880
the characters

127
00:04:45,040 --> 00:04:48,880
then it's very going to be run of the

128
00:04:46,880 --> 00:04:50,320
mill and your

129
00:04:48,880 --> 00:04:52,800
your actions

130
00:04:50,320 --> 00:04:55,919
affect the story but not your character

131
00:04:52,800 --> 00:04:58,160
growth or anything and that's one of the

132
00:04:55,919 --> 00:05:00,800
things that probably whether you know it

133
00:04:58,160 --> 00:05:02,560
or not is missing maybe if you've run an

134
00:05:00,800 --> 00:05:05,120
adventure module and you didn't enjoy it

135
00:05:02,560 --> 00:05:06,639
that there was no investment back in

136
00:05:05,120 --> 00:05:07,759
your character because they're not

137
00:05:06,639 --> 00:05:09,039
they're just not written that way and

138
00:05:07,759 --> 00:05:11,440
it's not

139
00:05:09,039 --> 00:05:13,280
it's not fair to expect wizards to you

140
00:05:11,440 --> 00:05:14,639
know handle that that's that's the

141
00:05:13,280 --> 00:05:16,720
dungeon that's where the dungeon master

142
00:05:14,639 --> 00:05:19,039
comes in to make

143
00:05:16,720 --> 00:05:22,080
an adventure module

144
00:05:19,039 --> 00:05:24,160
enjoyable and targeted at your your

145
00:05:22,080 --> 00:05:26,000
players not not everybody who's going to

146
00:05:24,160 --> 00:05:28,080
buy this book and i think

147
00:05:26,000 --> 00:05:30,080
that's where the concept of adaptation

148
00:05:28,080 --> 00:05:31,680
and the willingness to do so or at least

149
00:05:30,080 --> 00:05:32,479
the acknowledgement that you have to do

150
00:05:31,680 --> 00:05:35,199
that

151
00:05:32,479 --> 00:05:36,800
is where people kind of come off

152
00:05:35,199 --> 00:05:38,560
of adventure modules and just expect

153
00:05:36,800 --> 00:05:40,880
them to be perfect right out of the bag

154
00:05:38,560 --> 00:05:42,800
and go hey why isn't this great you know

155
00:05:40,880 --> 00:05:45,440
i'm doing exactly what it says there

156
00:05:42,800 --> 00:05:47,199
they wanted 50 for this why isn't this

157
00:05:45,440 --> 00:05:49,360
working why are my players not having a

158
00:05:47,199 --> 00:05:52,000
good time yeah why aren't we having fun

159
00:05:49,360 --> 00:05:54,160
i specifically requested it yeah that's

160
00:05:52,000 --> 00:05:56,560
exactly the mean

161
00:05:54,160 --> 00:05:59,039
i paid the requisite fifty dollars where

162
00:05:56,560 --> 00:06:00,960
where's our fun

163
00:05:59,039 --> 00:06:03,360
i think everybody who i've spoken to

164
00:06:00,960 --> 00:06:05,600
about the published adventure modules

165
00:06:03,360 --> 00:06:06,560
whatever side of the the fence they sit

166
00:06:05,600 --> 00:06:08,960
on

167
00:06:06,560 --> 00:06:11,759
their common theme is

168
00:06:08,960 --> 00:06:15,360
you always have to adapt them

169
00:06:11,759 --> 00:06:17,680
and be that in large amounts to be like

170
00:06:15,360 --> 00:06:19,840
instead of it being in this location

171
00:06:17,680 --> 00:06:21,280
it's in some other location and in fact

172
00:06:19,840 --> 00:06:23,120
the big bad is this other person that

173
00:06:21,280 --> 00:06:25,520
i'm going to bring in or if it's in a

174
00:06:23,120 --> 00:06:27,520
small amount of just being like

175
00:06:25,520 --> 00:06:29,919
that npc is actually one of the players

176
00:06:27,520 --> 00:06:31,039
brothers and they you know the starting

177
00:06:29,919 --> 00:06:33,360
village they're actually going to start

178
00:06:31,039 --> 00:06:36,080
in this other starting village where

179
00:06:33,360 --> 00:06:38,400
one of the other pcs grew up but there's

180
00:06:36,080 --> 00:06:40,479
always an element of

181
00:06:38,400 --> 00:06:43,280
adapting that published adventure module

182
00:06:40,479 --> 00:06:45,680
to fit that particular game

183
00:06:43,280 --> 00:06:46,639
here's a thought then here's a question

184
00:06:45,680 --> 00:06:49,360
that i've

185
00:06:46,639 --> 00:06:51,440
had since we've been talking

186
00:06:49,360 --> 00:06:53,280
maybe for newer dm i know

187
00:06:51,440 --> 00:06:55,199
you know i'm not expecting a newer dm

188
00:06:53,280 --> 00:06:56,560
just to rock up with like tomb of

189
00:06:55,199 --> 00:06:58,560
annihilation

190
00:06:56,560 --> 00:07:00,560
or whatever and be like i guess i'll run

191
00:06:58,560 --> 00:07:01,599
this because that's probably

192
00:07:00,560 --> 00:07:03,199
gonna be

193
00:07:01,599 --> 00:07:04,800
tricky

194
00:07:03,199 --> 00:07:06,240
to put it kindly

195
00:07:04,800 --> 00:07:07,120
but do you still think there's a bit of

196
00:07:06,240 --> 00:07:09,919
a

197
00:07:07,120 --> 00:07:11,280
for newer dms to just expect

198
00:07:09,919 --> 00:07:12,479
it to be

199
00:07:11,280 --> 00:07:15,280
laid out

200
00:07:12,479 --> 00:07:16,880
for them and if so is that not a failing

201
00:07:15,280 --> 00:07:18,960
somewhere in the system should should

202
00:07:16,880 --> 00:07:21,520
maybe the books be a bit more explicit

203
00:07:18,960 --> 00:07:23,840
about like

204
00:07:21,520 --> 00:07:25,199
i i i'm reticent to say like dm skill

205
00:07:23,840 --> 00:07:26,400
level because it's such a weird

206
00:07:25,199 --> 00:07:28,800
subjective

207
00:07:26,400 --> 00:07:30,639
abstract i think i get what you you know

208
00:07:28,800 --> 00:07:33,039
it goes back to the old you know

209
00:07:30,639 --> 00:07:35,280
original stuff of basic rules advance

210
00:07:33,039 --> 00:07:38,080
rules you know expert rules

211
00:07:35,280 --> 00:07:39,919
uh maybe a softer more you know

212
00:07:38,080 --> 00:07:41,840
modern kind of take on that and i think

213
00:07:39,919 --> 00:07:43,840
that's an idea

214
00:07:41,840 --> 00:07:47,039
god finish your thought i'm sorry

215
00:07:43,840 --> 00:07:49,680
well no no that was you spared me from

216
00:07:47,039 --> 00:07:51,039
trying to communicate it but

217
00:07:49,680 --> 00:07:52,879
it was broadly like

218
00:07:51,039 --> 00:07:54,560
and then it just feels like

219
00:07:52,879 --> 00:07:56,160
precisely why you said that there's

220
00:07:54,560 --> 00:07:57,919
negative connotations because a lot of

221
00:07:56,160 --> 00:07:59,759
people happen to fall into that trap so

222
00:07:57,919 --> 00:08:01,039
it feels like if it's such an obvious

223
00:07:59,759 --> 00:08:03,120
trap shouldn't there be something

224
00:08:01,039 --> 00:08:05,680
somewhere to say

225
00:08:03,120 --> 00:08:08,000
be careful there's a trap here here

226
00:08:05,680 --> 00:08:10,800
and what you know why isn't that been

227
00:08:08,000 --> 00:08:13,680
resolved perhaps it has and i'm just

228
00:08:10,800 --> 00:08:14,960
looking at a very small set of anecdotal

229
00:08:13,680 --> 00:08:17,120
evidence

230
00:08:14,960 --> 00:08:18,080
i haven't i haven't read it in too much

231
00:08:17,120 --> 00:08:20,240
depth

232
00:08:18,080 --> 00:08:22,720
but and i'm not gonna try to give away

233
00:08:20,240 --> 00:08:26,639
too many spoilers but potentially for uh

234
00:08:22,720 --> 00:08:28,319
the new the newest one um which like the

235
00:08:26,639 --> 00:08:29,440
the feywild one

236
00:08:28,319 --> 00:08:32,640
is that

237
00:08:29,440 --> 00:08:35,519
this one um so lately wizards has been

238
00:08:32,640 --> 00:08:36,640
experimenting with kind of like the mcu

239
00:08:35,519 --> 00:08:38,240
where they do

240
00:08:36,640 --> 00:08:40,000
their adventure modules and they're

241
00:08:38,240 --> 00:08:42,880
they're very dungeons and dragons but

242
00:08:40,000 --> 00:08:45,360
they also get like a sub genre a lot

243
00:08:42,880 --> 00:08:49,040
like the mcu movies did yeah winter

244
00:08:45,360 --> 00:08:50,959
soldier is more of a political thriller

245
00:08:49,040 --> 00:08:53,440
along those veins so they've been

246
00:08:50,959 --> 00:08:55,519
experimenting like with formats and with

247
00:08:53,440 --> 00:08:57,600
the kind of narratives that they've been

248
00:08:55,519 --> 00:08:58,640
telling which is i think is it's just

249
00:08:57,600 --> 00:09:00,720
amazing

250
00:08:58,640 --> 00:09:02,160
and in supposedly in which light one of

251
00:09:00,720 --> 00:09:05,360
the formats

252
00:09:02,160 --> 00:09:09,040
is that one of the draws of it is that

253
00:09:05,360 --> 00:09:12,000
they want to have every encounter be

254
00:09:09,040 --> 00:09:13,360
able to be resolved without

255
00:09:12,000 --> 00:09:14,240
combat

256
00:09:13,360 --> 00:09:15,680
and

257
00:09:14,240 --> 00:09:18,480
as a result

258
00:09:15,680 --> 00:09:21,200
because it's kind of woven into the

259
00:09:18,480 --> 00:09:24,560
system they have explicit

260
00:09:21,200 --> 00:09:25,920
outcomes of encounters players decide to

261
00:09:24,560 --> 00:09:27,200
kill

262
00:09:25,920 --> 00:09:30,800
do this

263
00:09:27,200 --> 00:09:33,120
players decide to do this non-violently

264
00:09:30,800 --> 00:09:34,720
here are kind of the requisites that

265
00:09:33,120 --> 00:09:36,720
need to be met

266
00:09:34,720 --> 00:09:39,120
in order for this to kind of be

267
00:09:36,720 --> 00:09:41,920
satisfactory you know

268
00:09:39,120 --> 00:09:44,800
adjudicated without it just being the dm

269
00:09:41,920 --> 00:09:46,399
discretion going yeah sure you know you

270
00:09:44,800 --> 00:09:49,600
you bribe the

271
00:09:46,399 --> 00:09:50,560
you know the setter or whatever and so

272
00:09:49,600 --> 00:09:52,560
that

273
00:09:50,560 --> 00:09:53,440
maybe just because it hasn't been done

274
00:09:52,560 --> 00:09:54,320
and

275
00:09:53,440 --> 00:09:56,959
as

276
00:09:54,320 --> 00:09:58,720
it's try to reach

277
00:09:56,959 --> 00:10:01,920
you know seriously a much more

278
00:09:58,720 --> 00:10:03,920
accessible point in its existence

279
00:10:01,920 --> 00:10:06,240
i think that that may be the wave of the

280
00:10:03,920 --> 00:10:09,279
future uh

281
00:10:06,240 --> 00:10:13,200
5e adventure modules are

282
00:10:09,279 --> 00:10:15,360
i think way more dense with

283
00:10:13,200 --> 00:10:17,279
things than some of the older editions

284
00:10:15,360 --> 00:10:19,519
are some of the older editions read like

285
00:10:17,279 --> 00:10:22,399
a 30-page novella

286
00:10:19,519 --> 00:10:24,720
with uh a reference to stat blocks and

287
00:10:22,399 --> 00:10:26,079
that's pretty much it it's this is the

288
00:10:24,720 --> 00:10:27,519
story

289
00:10:26,079 --> 00:10:30,000
you know the players will do this they

290
00:10:27,519 --> 00:10:32,399
will then co here and there's not the

291
00:10:30,000 --> 00:10:34,560
same kind of

292
00:10:32,399 --> 00:10:36,640
like just grand built out things that

293
00:10:34,560 --> 00:10:38,240
from in older dishes that there are in

294
00:10:36,640 --> 00:10:40,399
5e

295
00:10:38,240 --> 00:10:42,399
yeah i had heard that about which light

296
00:10:40,399 --> 00:10:43,600
and that every encounter was

297
00:10:42,399 --> 00:10:46,160
meant to be

298
00:10:43,600 --> 00:10:47,760
resolvable non-violently which is a very

299
00:10:46,160 --> 00:10:48,800
you know that's a very vogue thing and

300
00:10:47,760 --> 00:10:50,640
it has been for quite some time and

301
00:10:48,800 --> 00:10:52,160
certainly in video games you know like

302
00:10:50,640 --> 00:10:53,040
games like dishonored and stuff where

303
00:10:52,160 --> 00:10:53,839
you can

304
00:10:53,040 --> 00:10:56,000
pick

305
00:10:53,839 --> 00:10:57,760
to incapacitate rather than kill people

306
00:10:56,000 --> 00:10:59,600
and all that kind of stuff it's it's

307
00:10:57,760 --> 00:11:02,640
it's obviously something people

308
00:10:59,600 --> 00:11:04,240
like and want so it's it makes sense to

309
00:11:02,640 --> 00:11:05,760
to bring that in

310
00:11:04,240 --> 00:11:07,760
is it is it true

311
00:11:05,760 --> 00:11:09,760
that literally every encounter in the

312
00:11:07,760 --> 00:11:12,399
book is is

313
00:11:09,760 --> 00:11:15,760
applicable to that can be resolved

314
00:11:12,399 --> 00:11:18,240
without combat i'm not entirely sure i

315
00:11:15,760 --> 00:11:21,519
believe that there is

316
00:11:18,240 --> 00:11:22,720
a basic kind of rule set at the at the

317
00:11:21,519 --> 00:11:24,560
beginning of the book where they give

318
00:11:22,720 --> 00:11:26,640
you you know the preamble before the

319
00:11:24,560 --> 00:11:28,560
adventure of proper starts i think

320
00:11:26,640 --> 00:11:31,920
there's something in there

321
00:11:28,560 --> 00:11:34,399
about it and then as it to

322
00:11:31,920 --> 00:11:37,120
potentially more you know significant

323
00:11:34,399 --> 00:11:39,440
narrative portions of the of the

324
00:11:37,120 --> 00:11:41,839
adventure they might be specifically

325
00:11:39,440 --> 00:11:44,959
listed for you know whatever the

326
00:11:41,839 --> 00:11:47,839
equivalent of a boss encounter is or

327
00:11:44,959 --> 00:11:50,880
surely whatever they come up with for a

328
00:11:47,839 --> 00:11:53,120
fake carnival themed adventure

329
00:11:50,880 --> 00:11:54,880
is going to have some some new wrinkles

330
00:11:53,120 --> 00:11:56,800
and new ideas

331
00:11:54,880 --> 00:11:58,639
in it yeah

332
00:11:56,800 --> 00:12:00,480
yeah i'm just trying to think like i

333
00:11:58,639 --> 00:12:02,880
don't know where i sit

334
00:12:00,480 --> 00:12:04,639
with that because on one hand i'm like

335
00:12:02,880 --> 00:12:06,079
i don't

336
00:12:04,639 --> 00:12:07,760
doesn't sit quite well with me that it's

337
00:12:06,079 --> 00:12:11,200
so

338
00:12:07,760 --> 00:12:12,560
prescriptive in the outcomes but on the

339
00:12:11,200 --> 00:12:14,800
other hand it's like you said like it's

340
00:12:12,560 --> 00:12:16,560
super accessible and everybody can have

341
00:12:14,800 --> 00:12:18,160
a shot at here and there's you know all

342
00:12:16,560 --> 00:12:20,880
different play styles are accounted for

343
00:12:18,160 --> 00:12:22,000
so for me i'm like ah is it it's kind of

344
00:12:20,880 --> 00:12:24,480
less

345
00:12:22,000 --> 00:12:26,160
romantic in a way that there's

346
00:12:24,480 --> 00:12:27,600
you know it's less it's been demystified

347
00:12:26,160 --> 00:12:29,440
you get to see behind the screen a

348
00:12:27,600 --> 00:12:31,600
little bit more if they

349
00:12:29,440 --> 00:12:33,360
explicitly say

350
00:12:31,600 --> 00:12:35,360
how to how to circumvent these

351
00:12:33,360 --> 00:12:36,800
encounters without the dm having to

352
00:12:35,360 --> 00:12:39,200
perhaps

353
00:12:36,800 --> 00:12:41,519
adapt on the fly to definitely bring us

354
00:12:39,200 --> 00:12:43,920
back on topic

355
00:12:41,519 --> 00:12:47,040
i think that it's also just that it it's

356
00:12:43,920 --> 00:12:48,079
it's relatively new as a concept yeah

357
00:12:47,040 --> 00:12:50,880
and so

358
00:12:48,079 --> 00:12:53,279
to see it written out

359
00:12:50,880 --> 00:12:56,240
you know even just once just to see hey

360
00:12:53,279 --> 00:12:58,880
this is what you know the design team um

361
00:12:56,240 --> 00:13:00,399
i'm sure jeremy crawford uh is involved

362
00:12:58,880 --> 00:13:02,079
you know this is what the design team

363
00:13:00,399 --> 00:13:04,000
and jeremy crawford

364
00:13:02,079 --> 00:13:06,880
feel like is

365
00:13:04,000 --> 00:13:09,680
balanced as non-violent ways of

366
00:13:06,880 --> 00:13:11,200
resolving these issues

367
00:13:09,680 --> 00:13:14,000
maybe just to kind of give everybody a

368
00:13:11,200 --> 00:13:16,240
baseline we've we've never seen it exp

369
00:13:14,000 --> 00:13:17,760
well at least in 5e maybe in some of the

370
00:13:16,240 --> 00:13:19,600
older ones you've never seen it

371
00:13:17,760 --> 00:13:22,480
explicitly expressly written out that

372
00:13:19,600 --> 00:13:25,680
this is what it should or what you know

373
00:13:22,480 --> 00:13:28,160
we deem a satisfactory conclusion so i

374
00:13:25,680 --> 00:13:30,399
think that as a as a baseline and just

375
00:13:28,160 --> 00:13:32,320
to go hey if you ever want to see

376
00:13:30,399 --> 00:13:35,680
what you know wizards of the coast

377
00:13:32,320 --> 00:13:37,040
thinks is suitable for non-violent

378
00:13:35,680 --> 00:13:38,880
resolution

379
00:13:37,040 --> 00:13:41,040
go go look at which light and go see

380
00:13:38,880 --> 00:13:45,680
these things and then from there adapt

381
00:13:41,040 --> 00:13:47,360
those to your your specific situation

382
00:13:45,680 --> 00:13:49,199
yeah i think that's that's you know

383
00:13:47,360 --> 00:13:52,639
considering my mind

384
00:13:49,199 --> 00:13:55,040
changed you know changed my view uh so

385
00:13:52,639 --> 00:13:57,360
on on that matter

386
00:13:55,040 --> 00:14:00,160
so i know that you have

387
00:13:57,360 --> 00:14:01,760
streamed and are currently streaming and

388
00:14:00,160 --> 00:14:03,920
planned to stream in the future uh

389
00:14:01,760 --> 00:14:05,920
publish adventure modules

390
00:14:03,920 --> 00:14:08,240
how much adaptation have you done to

391
00:14:05,920 --> 00:14:08,240
those

392
00:14:08,560 --> 00:14:10,880
i

393
00:14:09,440 --> 00:14:13,279
i am also an

394
00:14:10,880 --> 00:14:15,760
odd advocate for the pre-published

395
00:14:13,279 --> 00:14:16,720
adventure modules as i will fully admit

396
00:14:15,760 --> 00:14:18,880
to

397
00:14:16,720 --> 00:14:20,480
using them as a

398
00:14:18,880 --> 00:14:22,399
framework

399
00:14:20,480 --> 00:14:25,760
at best

400
00:14:22,399 --> 00:14:26,880
i like my narratives very focused on my

401
00:14:25,760 --> 00:14:28,399
players

402
00:14:26,880 --> 00:14:31,360
and so i

403
00:14:28,399 --> 00:14:35,760
for the most part keep large set pieces

404
00:14:31,360 --> 00:14:37,760
locations and the general framework of

405
00:14:35,760 --> 00:14:40,240
the narrative as a whole um we're

406
00:14:37,760 --> 00:14:42,800
running icewinddale now so

407
00:14:40,240 --> 00:14:45,920
the frost maidens curse

408
00:14:42,800 --> 00:14:48,639
the major set pieces in and around

409
00:14:45,920 --> 00:14:49,440
through the adventure uh we kept

410
00:14:48,639 --> 00:14:51,600
but

411
00:14:49,440 --> 00:14:55,120
everything kind of in between the set

412
00:14:51,600 --> 00:14:57,760
pieces is where we did our our character

413
00:14:55,120 --> 00:15:00,880
arcs our character stories so it's a

414
00:14:57,760 --> 00:15:03,519
it's two ideas smashed into one with if

415
00:15:00,880 --> 00:15:06,560
anything has to give it's actually the

416
00:15:03,519 --> 00:15:08,720
the narrative from the adventure module

417
00:15:06,560 --> 00:15:10,720
okay yeah i like that how you've how

418
00:15:08,720 --> 00:15:12,560
you've you stitch in as we were talking

419
00:15:10,720 --> 00:15:14,160
about earlier on the bit that can turn

420
00:15:12,560 --> 00:15:15,519
people off is that there's none of that

421
00:15:14,160 --> 00:15:16,880
character

422
00:15:15,519 --> 00:15:19,360
uh what's the word i'm looking for not

423
00:15:16,880 --> 00:15:21,199
interactivity but integration

424
00:15:19,360 --> 00:15:23,199
into the world if you just do the

425
00:15:21,199 --> 00:15:25,199
publish modules verbatim so i like that

426
00:15:23,199 --> 00:15:26,399
you've stitched them in between and that

427
00:15:25,199 --> 00:15:28,160
kind of

428
00:15:26,399 --> 00:15:29,920
immediately solves that problem if you

429
00:15:28,160 --> 00:15:31,360
give it time to breathe you know you

430
00:15:29,920 --> 00:15:33,440
give the players time to breathe and

431
00:15:31,360 --> 00:15:36,000
have those interactions and do their

432
00:15:33,440 --> 00:15:38,480
little little personal career

433
00:15:36,000 --> 00:15:41,199
side quests their side goals

434
00:15:38,480 --> 00:15:44,320
so it and it does take a certain amount

435
00:15:41,199 --> 00:15:47,040
of time um one of my players we are

436
00:15:44,320 --> 00:15:48,399
tomorrow's episode 37 which like i said

437
00:15:47,040 --> 00:15:50,320
will be the which will be the final

438
00:15:48,399 --> 00:15:52,880
episode we'll have the final encounter

439
00:15:50,320 --> 00:15:55,519
and do all that but one of my characters

440
00:15:52,880 --> 00:15:58,160
did not get his

441
00:15:55,519 --> 00:16:00,959
backstory character arc

442
00:15:58,160 --> 00:16:04,000
interwoven into the narrative until

443
00:16:00,959 --> 00:16:07,279
three episodes ago okay

444
00:16:04,000 --> 00:16:10,160
others got them relatively early um it's

445
00:16:07,279 --> 00:16:13,360
just where it fit within the kind of

446
00:16:10,160 --> 00:16:14,639
frame uh i look at icelandale as you

447
00:16:13,360 --> 00:16:17,600
know an entire

448
00:16:14,639 --> 00:16:19,680
series of boxes that you string together

449
00:16:17,600 --> 00:16:21,120
and i leave them as they are except

450
00:16:19,680 --> 00:16:23,519
where i need to take them out because i

451
00:16:21,120 --> 00:16:25,759
need to put something in there so

452
00:16:23,519 --> 00:16:27,680
as wherever i kind of fit this where are

453
00:16:25,759 --> 00:16:30,079
they going to be what's going on all

454
00:16:27,680 --> 00:16:31,199
right you know oren's story is going to

455
00:16:30,079 --> 00:16:33,680
be here

456
00:16:31,199 --> 00:16:36,480
balder's story is going to be over here

457
00:16:33,680 --> 00:16:38,720
and at the beginning as a new streamer

458
00:16:36,480 --> 00:16:40,240
i'm just hoping that everybody sticks

459
00:16:38,720 --> 00:16:41,600
around long enough to see their

460
00:16:40,240 --> 00:16:43,600
character arc

461
00:16:41,600 --> 00:16:46,000
and uh they all did and it was it was

462
00:16:43,600 --> 00:16:48,240
great they they've really enjoyed it i

463
00:16:46,000 --> 00:16:50,639
think from a player's perspective uh the

464
00:16:48,240 --> 00:16:52,800
adventure module is is great

465
00:16:50,639 --> 00:16:54,560
you know as a player for the most part

466
00:16:52,800 --> 00:16:56,639
kind of what you're getting somebody has

467
00:16:54,560 --> 00:16:59,360
seen this this isn't just somebody

468
00:16:56,639 --> 00:17:01,440
making it up sight unseen nobody having

469
00:16:59,360 --> 00:17:02,320
ever read it before yeah entire trust

470
00:17:01,440 --> 00:17:04,000
you're

471
00:17:02,320 --> 00:17:06,000
somebody selling this and making money

472
00:17:04,000 --> 00:17:07,360
off of it so if somebody willing to say

473
00:17:06,000 --> 00:17:09,679
hey i'm gonna run rhyme with the

474
00:17:07,360 --> 00:17:11,520
frostbane you at least get to know all

475
00:17:09,679 --> 00:17:13,120
right it's at least

476
00:17:11,520 --> 00:17:15,360
decent enough this isn't something

477
00:17:13,120 --> 00:17:20,319
that's incoherent and makes no sense

478
00:17:15,360 --> 00:17:23,439
yeah yeah very diy yeah and it's it's

479
00:17:20,319 --> 00:17:26,400
great we we've had a lot of fun

480
00:17:23,439 --> 00:17:30,240
we we changed a lot i changed a lot just

481
00:17:26,400 --> 00:17:31,039
i wanted it to be about them and it's

482
00:17:30,240 --> 00:17:33,120
just

483
00:17:31,039 --> 00:17:34,799
it's it's hard to do there's a lot of

484
00:17:33,120 --> 00:17:36,400
kind of narrative

485
00:17:34,799 --> 00:17:38,960
issues with the module you don't find

486
00:17:36,400 --> 00:17:40,400
out until you're a couple of months in

487
00:17:38,960 --> 00:17:42,160
that if

488
00:17:40,400 --> 00:17:43,840
you notice it then maybe your players

489
00:17:42,160 --> 00:17:46,000
notice it so you have to go about kind

490
00:17:43,840 --> 00:17:47,760
of fixing things you didn't know were

491
00:17:46,000 --> 00:17:50,480
broken until they happen

492
00:17:47,760 --> 00:17:51,919
and that can be fun it's kind of an

493
00:17:50,480 --> 00:17:53,360
impromptu they're going to ask a

494
00:17:51,919 --> 00:17:55,679
question about something that happened

495
00:17:53,360 --> 00:17:57,039
20 sessions ago and you'd be like oh man

496
00:17:55,679 --> 00:17:58,880
i don't remember what happened with that

497
00:17:57,039 --> 00:18:01,679
okay here we go

498
00:17:58,880 --> 00:18:03,919
you know adapting on the fly yeah

499
00:18:01,679 --> 00:18:06,080
okay well thank thanks for that segway

500
00:18:03,919 --> 00:18:08,080
because i i was going to say that we've

501
00:18:06,080 --> 00:18:11,039
talked quite a lot now about the

502
00:18:08,080 --> 00:18:12,480
you know changing adventure modules and

503
00:18:11,039 --> 00:18:14,480
and ways to do that i think the key

504
00:18:12,480 --> 00:18:16,640
takeaway from that is

505
00:18:14,480 --> 00:18:18,559
involve or get the players invested and

506
00:18:16,640 --> 00:18:22,080
get their characters integrated it's

507
00:18:18,559 --> 00:18:23,919
probably the the the single sentence

508
00:18:22,080 --> 00:18:25,919
silver bullet for

509
00:18:23,919 --> 00:18:28,320
improving the quality of life

510
00:18:25,919 --> 00:18:30,080
of your published adventures now you

511
00:18:28,320 --> 00:18:32,720
mentioned they're about adapting to your

512
00:18:30,080 --> 00:18:34,640
players and i kind of broadly think

513
00:18:32,720 --> 00:18:36,640
about that from from a dm's perspective

514
00:18:34,640 --> 00:18:39,039
in kind of two

515
00:18:36,640 --> 00:18:41,520
ways split down the middle so micro and

516
00:18:39,039 --> 00:18:43,200
macro so what i mean by that is kind of

517
00:18:41,520 --> 00:18:44,960
moment to moment

518
00:18:43,200 --> 00:18:46,799
adapting to literally responding to the

519
00:18:44,960 --> 00:18:49,120
players actions and

520
00:18:46,799 --> 00:18:52,559
putting up with their weird and wacky

521
00:18:49,120 --> 00:18:54,400
requests or actions or this that and the

522
00:18:52,559 --> 00:18:57,840
other and then the the macro side of

523
00:18:54,400 --> 00:19:00,320
things is integrating backstories and

524
00:18:57,840 --> 00:19:03,120
you know having npcs pop up from their

525
00:19:00,320 --> 00:19:05,120
past and that kind of stuff so

526
00:19:03,120 --> 00:19:07,840
how do you as a

527
00:19:05,120 --> 00:19:09,679
long long time dm with plenty of

528
00:19:07,840 --> 00:19:11,679
experience what are your kind of

529
00:19:09,679 --> 00:19:13,840
thoughts and tips and tricks on

530
00:19:11,679 --> 00:19:15,280
that kind of micro

531
00:19:13,840 --> 00:19:18,080
moment-to-moment

532
00:19:15,280 --> 00:19:20,080
adapting as a dm to maybe

533
00:19:18,080 --> 00:19:21,840
you know tips to for newer dm's that are

534
00:19:20,080 --> 00:19:23,520
just kind of like

535
00:19:21,840 --> 00:19:26,000
[ __ ] i

536
00:19:23,520 --> 00:19:27,600
i see so many posts online that are like

537
00:19:26,000 --> 00:19:30,240
i'm dming for the first time tomorrow

538
00:19:27,600 --> 00:19:31,039
and i'm hella scared like what do i do

539
00:19:30,240 --> 00:19:33,919
and

540
00:19:31,039 --> 00:19:36,480
what would you say to that person

541
00:19:33,919 --> 00:19:38,400
you know the obvious advice is that not

542
00:19:36,480 --> 00:19:40,880
everybody has to be matt mercer that's

543
00:19:38,400 --> 00:19:43,679
that's clear number one

544
00:19:40,880 --> 00:19:45,280
everybody's in this for a good time just

545
00:19:43,679 --> 00:19:46,160
you know relax

546
00:19:45,280 --> 00:19:48,000
and

547
00:19:46,160 --> 00:19:50,160
be the dungeon master you always wanted

548
00:19:48,000 --> 00:19:51,360
to have is the advice like i always give

549
00:19:50,160 --> 00:19:52,480
people

550
00:19:51,360 --> 00:19:55,679
and

551
00:19:52,480 --> 00:19:58,000
it's it's okay to say if your players

552
00:19:55,679 --> 00:20:00,080
surprise you first of all and enjoy that

553
00:19:58,000 --> 00:20:00,960
feeling that's a that's a very cool

554
00:20:00,080 --> 00:20:03,120
thing

555
00:20:00,960 --> 00:20:05,760
as the dungeon master the more

556
00:20:03,120 --> 00:20:08,400
experience you get you've played out a

557
00:20:05,760 --> 00:20:10,559
pretty decent amount of scenarios of how

558
00:20:08,400 --> 00:20:13,360
your players could react to something

559
00:20:10,559 --> 00:20:16,000
especially the longer you've known them

560
00:20:13,360 --> 00:20:18,000
so when they do surprise you first of

561
00:20:16,000 --> 00:20:21,200
all enjoy that it's a it is it's this

562
00:20:18,000 --> 00:20:22,559
very cool feeling um it i just i love

563
00:20:21,200 --> 00:20:26,400
the hell out of it

564
00:20:22,559 --> 00:20:29,360
and then it is it is perfectly okay you

565
00:20:26,400 --> 00:20:32,000
are probably not running a live twitch

566
00:20:29,360 --> 00:20:35,440
stream and even if you are it's okay to

567
00:20:32,000 --> 00:20:37,760
say hey i really got taken aback by that

568
00:20:35,440 --> 00:20:40,960
i would like a minute to

569
00:20:37,760 --> 00:20:42,480
figure out what happens next that is a

570
00:20:40,960 --> 00:20:43,679
completely

571
00:20:42,480 --> 00:20:45,200
valid

572
00:20:43,679 --> 00:20:48,080
and

573
00:20:45,200 --> 00:20:51,039
mature way almost of expressing that

574
00:20:48,080 --> 00:20:51,840
just just be honest um you don't have to

575
00:20:51,039 --> 00:20:53,919
think

576
00:20:51,840 --> 00:20:56,240
at the split second and come up with the

577
00:20:53,919 --> 00:20:58,400
best scenario you that there's nothing

578
00:20:56,240 --> 00:21:00,559
that says you have to do that

579
00:20:58,400 --> 00:21:04,400
take a moment give

580
00:21:00,559 --> 00:21:07,600
the time and the thought to

581
00:21:04,400 --> 00:21:10,320
being fair to that moment

582
00:21:07,600 --> 00:21:12,480
by coming up with something genuine and

583
00:21:10,320 --> 00:21:14,960
thought out even if it's two minutes of

584
00:21:12,480 --> 00:21:18,480
think don't you don't have to reply in

585
00:21:14,960 --> 00:21:20,720
the moment if you would like to

586
00:21:18,480 --> 00:21:22,240
if you know your group well

587
00:21:20,720 --> 00:21:24,720
that is

588
00:21:22,240 --> 00:21:25,919
unbelievably helpful in a lot of regards

589
00:21:24,720 --> 00:21:28,720
you

590
00:21:25,919 --> 00:21:30,640
just kind of go with it they will enjoy

591
00:21:28,720 --> 00:21:32,960
it and they most likely trust you if

592
00:21:30,640 --> 00:21:34,480
you've been together for a long time

593
00:21:32,960 --> 00:21:35,280
and

594
00:21:34,480 --> 00:21:38,000
if

595
00:21:35,280 --> 00:21:39,760
you are good at improv it's a skill the

596
00:21:38,000 --> 00:21:42,080
longer you do this you will get better

597
00:21:39,760 --> 00:21:45,039
at it and you absolutely will yeah

598
00:21:42,080 --> 00:21:47,280
some of the improv moments are

599
00:21:45,039 --> 00:21:49,919
the really exciting moments for a

600
00:21:47,280 --> 00:21:51,919
dungeon master when you absolutely in

601
00:21:49,919 --> 00:21:54,320
the blink of an eye know

602
00:21:51,919 --> 00:21:56,720
or things maybe just start coming out of

603
00:21:54,320 --> 00:21:59,520
your mouth without without thought and

604
00:21:56,720 --> 00:22:00,400
reaction those are some of the most fun

605
00:21:59,520 --> 00:22:02,880
times

606
00:22:00,400 --> 00:22:05,440
it's great when they obviously realize

607
00:22:02,880 --> 00:22:07,840
you did it and it turned out great it's

608
00:22:05,440 --> 00:22:10,080
even better when they don't realize you

609
00:22:07,840 --> 00:22:12,240
improv and you just

610
00:22:10,080 --> 00:22:14,400
turn that hamster on the wheel in your

611
00:22:12,240 --> 00:22:16,559
head really quickly and came up with

612
00:22:14,400 --> 00:22:18,159
something awesome that that's going to

613
00:22:16,559 --> 00:22:20,320
come with experience

614
00:22:18,159 --> 00:22:22,799
knowing your group is a help

615
00:22:20,320 --> 00:22:23,919
so don't stress that part it's it's

616
00:22:22,799 --> 00:22:26,000
awesome and it's one of those things

617
00:22:23,919 --> 00:22:28,559
people really enjoy and one of the

618
00:22:26,000 --> 00:22:29,840
things dms most brag about and players

619
00:22:28,559 --> 00:22:31,760
really kind of

620
00:22:29,840 --> 00:22:34,080
go crazy about

621
00:22:31,760 --> 00:22:36,480
it's not necessary it is a it is a

622
00:22:34,080 --> 00:22:38,320
luxury on top of the the already fun

623
00:22:36,480 --> 00:22:39,679
thing that is playing dungeons dragons

624
00:22:38,320 --> 00:22:41,520
that's the that's the point all that

625
00:22:39,679 --> 00:22:44,000
other stuff is bonus you don't have to

626
00:22:41,520 --> 00:22:47,360
chase it you don't have to want it

627
00:22:44,000 --> 00:22:49,520
enjoy it when it happens but you are not

628
00:22:47,360 --> 00:22:51,600
less than or you know not worthy of

629
00:22:49,520 --> 00:22:53,440
being a dungeon master because you're

630
00:22:51,600 --> 00:22:54,880
not super quick on your feet there's

631
00:22:53,440 --> 00:22:56,799
there's a lot of skills involved in this

632
00:22:54,880 --> 00:22:58,159
yeah if you don't have them all it's not

633
00:22:56,799 --> 00:22:59,360
the end of the world

634
00:22:58,159 --> 00:23:01,200
no i

635
00:22:59,360 --> 00:23:03,280
you know i couldn't agree more pretty

636
00:23:01,200 --> 00:23:04,159
much everything you said there i'm agree

637
00:23:03,280 --> 00:23:05,679
with

638
00:23:04,159 --> 00:23:07,520
a huge amount and

639
00:23:05,679 --> 00:23:09,280
it's the the things i remember from my

640
00:23:07,520 --> 00:23:12,400
campaign which is now like

641
00:23:09,280 --> 00:23:14,159
60 70 sessions long the things i

642
00:23:12,400 --> 00:23:15,840
remember most are those moments where

643
00:23:14,159 --> 00:23:17,280
i've gone oh

644
00:23:15,840 --> 00:23:19,520
okay

645
00:23:17,280 --> 00:23:22,000
and i've been completely caught off

646
00:23:19,520 --> 00:23:23,919
guard as it were by by players doing

647
00:23:22,000 --> 00:23:26,240
something that i hadn't ex and you're

648
00:23:23,919 --> 00:23:28,159
exactly right about like

649
00:23:26,240 --> 00:23:31,280
it's i think it's human nature for dms

650
00:23:28,159 --> 00:23:33,440
to to try and at least anticipate the

651
00:23:31,280 --> 00:23:35,360
you know pareto the likely

652
00:23:33,440 --> 00:23:37,039
course of action the likely two three

653
00:23:35,360 --> 00:23:39,600
four courses of action that the players

654
00:23:37,039 --> 00:23:42,080
are gonna take i think that's just

655
00:23:39,600 --> 00:23:44,480
common sense to a certain extent um to

656
00:23:42,080 --> 00:23:46,799
at least anticipate them so when the

657
00:23:44,480 --> 00:23:49,520
players don't do those two three four

658
00:23:46,799 --> 00:23:51,360
actions it is very much a light bulb

659
00:23:49,520 --> 00:23:52,640
moment i guess you're not having an idea

660
00:23:51,360 --> 00:23:55,919
but you're having

661
00:23:52,640 --> 00:23:58,960
something and it is yeah that is a very

662
00:23:55,919 --> 00:24:01,919
very exciting time to be and i

663
00:23:58,960 --> 00:24:03,279
personally am very attached to that kind

664
00:24:01,919 --> 00:24:05,760
of like immediate

665
00:24:03,279 --> 00:24:06,880
feedback loop of you know something

666
00:24:05,760 --> 00:24:09,200
something

667
00:24:06,880 --> 00:24:12,080
surprising happens and i'm literally in

668
00:24:09,200 --> 00:24:14,320
the hot seat having to react and adapt

669
00:24:12,080 --> 00:24:16,400
to it and then there being immediate

670
00:24:14,320 --> 00:24:18,000
feedback from the players as to okay

671
00:24:16,400 --> 00:24:19,600
that might have missed the mark a little

672
00:24:18,000 --> 00:24:20,720
bit or that's rubbed them up the wrong

673
00:24:19,600 --> 00:24:22,559
way let me

674
00:24:20,720 --> 00:24:24,080
dynamically adjust that background that

675
00:24:22,559 --> 00:24:26,400
that is what

676
00:24:24,080 --> 00:24:27,200
gets me out of bed

677
00:24:26,400 --> 00:24:28,640
on a

678
00:24:27,200 --> 00:24:30,240
day that i'm dealing

679
00:24:28,640 --> 00:24:32,720
and another piece that i wanted to add

680
00:24:30,240 --> 00:24:34,400
there where you talked about

681
00:24:32,720 --> 00:24:36,880
you know taking five minutes or however

682
00:24:34,400 --> 00:24:38,720
long to to think you know of a response

683
00:24:36,880 --> 00:24:41,360
or an outcome or you know the outcome of

684
00:24:38,720 --> 00:24:43,120
a dice roll or the response of an npc to

685
00:24:41,360 --> 00:24:44,640
a particular question

686
00:24:43,120 --> 00:24:46,799
i think

687
00:24:44,640 --> 00:24:48,720
that that that feels like

688
00:24:46,799 --> 00:24:49,600
it's one of those things that every dm

689
00:24:48,720 --> 00:24:51,919
does

690
00:24:49,600 --> 00:24:53,279
but it's one of those also things that

691
00:24:51,919 --> 00:24:55,600
newer dms

692
00:24:53,279 --> 00:24:57,120
think that it's such a bad like

693
00:24:55,600 --> 00:24:58,960
god i just have to be

694
00:24:57,120 --> 00:25:01,200
responsive and the answer's like no no

695
00:24:58,960 --> 00:25:03,440
man literally every

696
00:25:01,200 --> 00:25:05,120
every dm will do that probably more

697
00:25:03,440 --> 00:25:07,360
often than you realize

698
00:25:05,120 --> 00:25:09,360
uh you know podcasts

699
00:25:07,360 --> 00:25:11,919
can be edited so

700
00:25:09,360 --> 00:25:14,000
any any silence just disappears and

701
00:25:11,919 --> 00:25:15,360
likewise so can youtube videos and stuff

702
00:25:14,000 --> 00:25:16,320
so

703
00:25:15,360 --> 00:25:18,480
there

704
00:25:16,320 --> 00:25:19,840
is an adage that

705
00:25:18,480 --> 00:25:22,559
for d

706
00:25:19,840 --> 00:25:25,919
no game is better than a bad game

707
00:25:22,559 --> 00:25:28,000
and what people mean by that is

708
00:25:25,919 --> 00:25:30,720
that like the bad ex you know a lot of

709
00:25:28,000 --> 00:25:32,159
people have bad experiences with d and d

710
00:25:30,720 --> 00:25:33,760
and it's because they're you know it's a

711
00:25:32,159 --> 00:25:38,159
toxic environment they're playing with

712
00:25:33,760 --> 00:25:40,080
horrible people uh the dm has some weird

713
00:25:38,159 --> 00:25:42,799
different play styles that maybe aren't

714
00:25:40,080 --> 00:25:43,919
what you're after and that leaves again

715
00:25:42,799 --> 00:25:45,440
people with a very bad taste in their

716
00:25:43,919 --> 00:25:46,320
mouth and then maybe might not try the

717
00:25:45,440 --> 00:25:47,600
hobby

718
00:25:46,320 --> 00:25:49,440
again because they've gone well that's

719
00:25:47,600 --> 00:25:51,600
what it was and it wasn't really for me

720
00:25:49,440 --> 00:25:53,679
so i guess i don't want to do it anymore

721
00:25:51,600 --> 00:25:56,000
so that's like the worst possible

722
00:25:53,679 --> 00:25:59,200
outcome and in those instances it's like

723
00:25:56,000 --> 00:26:00,880
no it's it's worth to wait and find

724
00:25:59,200 --> 00:26:02,640
a good match for you

725
00:26:00,880 --> 00:26:03,840
and but just be patient and the same can

726
00:26:02,640 --> 00:26:06,960
be said

727
00:26:03,840 --> 00:26:09,919
as a dm to responding to those answers

728
00:26:06,960 --> 00:26:12,240
so so no answer or a delayed response is

729
00:26:09,919 --> 00:26:13,760
better than a bad hodgepodge response

730
00:26:12,240 --> 00:26:16,400
that you've just pulled out your

731
00:26:13,760 --> 00:26:18,240
backside because you felt like you had

732
00:26:16,400 --> 00:26:19,760
to and i've done it

733
00:26:18,240 --> 00:26:20,880
i've said it a hundred times and been

734
00:26:19,760 --> 00:26:23,360
like ah

735
00:26:20,880 --> 00:26:26,159
[ __ ] shouldn't i said that or you want

736
00:26:23,360 --> 00:26:28,799
you want it you want it back yes and you

737
00:26:26,159 --> 00:26:30,320
know you feel it it's it's even worse if

738
00:26:28,799 --> 00:26:32,720
your players are invested because if

739
00:26:30,320 --> 00:26:35,360
they're invested and you who you know

740
00:26:32,720 --> 00:26:37,760
hold all the the cards as it were as the

741
00:26:35,360 --> 00:26:40,080
dungeon master if you give out something

742
00:26:37,760 --> 00:26:43,039
especially if it's an important moment

743
00:26:40,080 --> 00:26:45,200
like it's it's really unfair to your

744
00:26:43,039 --> 00:26:47,039
players i you know i'm i'm not i'm not

745
00:26:45,200 --> 00:26:49,679
judging you because i've done it too and

746
00:26:47,039 --> 00:26:52,559
i've i've felt terrible about it

747
00:26:49,679 --> 00:26:54,640
and to avoid those moments there's

748
00:26:52,559 --> 00:26:57,440
there's nothing wrong with going hey

749
00:26:54,640 --> 00:26:58,559
give me a second everybody who's maybe

750
00:26:57,440 --> 00:26:59,440
newish

751
00:26:58,559 --> 00:27:00,720
to

752
00:26:59,440 --> 00:27:02,880
the hobby

753
00:27:00,720 --> 00:27:06,320
has come to it from viewing it as

754
00:27:02,880 --> 00:27:08,159
something presented on the internet as

755
00:27:06,320 --> 00:27:10,480
any you know come to have that as the

756
00:27:08,159 --> 00:27:12,799
expectation of the way it is where a

757
00:27:10,480 --> 00:27:14,720
home game is is absolutely nothing like

758
00:27:12,799 --> 00:27:16,559
that it is not even close

759
00:27:14,720 --> 00:27:18,880
you do not have five people sitting in

760
00:27:16,559 --> 00:27:20,799
the exact same spot for three hours like

761
00:27:18,880 --> 00:27:22,880
everybody's up and moving around and

762
00:27:20,799 --> 00:27:23,840
it's a more dynamic thing

763
00:27:22,880 --> 00:27:26,640
and

764
00:27:23,840 --> 00:27:28,399
plenty of times everybody will say hey

765
00:27:26,640 --> 00:27:31,039
hold on one second i have to go to the

766
00:27:28,399 --> 00:27:33,120
bathroom and the game stops and that's a

767
00:27:31,039 --> 00:27:35,279
very valid thing and nobody ever says

768
00:27:33,120 --> 00:27:36,559
that's not a thing so for the dm to say

769
00:27:35,279 --> 00:27:39,360
hey we're going to stop the game for a

770
00:27:36,559 --> 00:27:41,039
second so i can give you you know a a

771
00:27:39,360 --> 00:27:43,600
reasonable and

772
00:27:41,039 --> 00:27:45,840
hopefully enjoyable outcome to this

773
00:27:43,600 --> 00:27:47,360
that's not there there's there's nothing

774
00:27:45,840 --> 00:27:48,799
written down that says that that's a bad

775
00:27:47,360 --> 00:27:51,919
thing

776
00:27:48,799 --> 00:27:52,960
yeah absolutely and i

777
00:27:51,919 --> 00:27:54,159
you know i

778
00:27:52,960 --> 00:27:55,840
very much

779
00:27:54,159 --> 00:27:58,240
get lost and can't see the wood for the

780
00:27:55,840 --> 00:28:01,760
trees when i'm deep in the in the dm

781
00:27:58,240 --> 00:28:03,520
zone so it's so valuable just to be like

782
00:28:01,760 --> 00:28:05,279
you know let me just take let me just

783
00:28:03,520 --> 00:28:06,799
take a hot minute just to take a few

784
00:28:05,279 --> 00:28:08,080
deep breaths and be like hang on let me

785
00:28:06,799 --> 00:28:10,640
look at the bigger picture here because

786
00:28:08,080 --> 00:28:11,679
what i'm about to say could

787
00:28:10,640 --> 00:28:13,600
impact

788
00:28:11,679 --> 00:28:16,880
the next you know 10 20 sessions or

789
00:28:13,600 --> 00:28:18,960
however long so it does

790
00:28:16,880 --> 00:28:21,919
especially with like dice rolls i think

791
00:28:18,960 --> 00:28:24,399
a trick that i actually use as a dm for

792
00:28:21,919 --> 00:28:27,440
responding to dice rolls i'd say like

793
00:28:24,399 --> 00:28:28,559
middling importance dice rolls

794
00:28:27,440 --> 00:28:29,679
is

795
00:28:28,559 --> 00:28:31,279
i'm

796
00:28:29,679 --> 00:28:35,039
i guess fortunate in this case have a

797
00:28:31,279 --> 00:28:36,559
large group of six players so often

798
00:28:35,039 --> 00:28:38,559
a couple of them are doing a whole bunch

799
00:28:36,559 --> 00:28:40,880
of stuff simultaneously so it's very

800
00:28:38,559 --> 00:28:43,520
easy for me to be like okay yeah you

801
00:28:40,880 --> 00:28:43,520
know um

802
00:28:43,600 --> 00:28:46,320
run me a perception check and we'll come

803
00:28:44,880 --> 00:28:47,200
back to you in a second

804
00:28:46,320 --> 00:28:48,720
and

805
00:28:47,200 --> 00:28:50,640
i can just

806
00:28:48,720 --> 00:28:52,960
put that to one side and kind of forget

807
00:28:50,640 --> 00:28:54,720
about that

808
00:28:52,960 --> 00:28:56,720
and that's my my special trick while i

809
00:28:54,720 --> 00:28:58,159
go and deal with the other players and

810
00:28:56,720 --> 00:29:00,880
then sort them

811
00:28:58,159 --> 00:29:02,799
stuff out and often that's all i need is

812
00:29:00,880 --> 00:29:05,039
just a little bit just a little bit of

813
00:29:02,799 --> 00:29:06,960
time just to be like

814
00:29:05,039 --> 00:29:08,320
okay what

815
00:29:06,960 --> 00:29:10,000
okay i kind of

816
00:29:08,320 --> 00:29:12,399
put it on the you know like a sub

817
00:29:10,000 --> 00:29:14,399
process in my brain so my the my main

818
00:29:12,399 --> 00:29:15,919
consciousness is playing the game and

819
00:29:14,399 --> 00:29:18,480
then in the back it's always just

820
00:29:15,919 --> 00:29:20,720
ticking over at like 20 efficiency of

821
00:29:18,480 --> 00:29:22,159
just like the results of that perception

822
00:29:20,720 --> 00:29:23,760
check so when i eventually go back to

823
00:29:22,159 --> 00:29:25,600
royther and go oh yeah so what did you

824
00:29:23,760 --> 00:29:27,039
roll okay

825
00:29:25,600 --> 00:29:29,840
you see

826
00:29:27,039 --> 00:29:33,440
xyz and i've already kind of got it

827
00:29:29,840 --> 00:29:36,080
queued up because i've spent that time

828
00:29:33,440 --> 00:29:38,159
which which during playtime haha no one

829
00:29:36,080 --> 00:29:39,840
can see it's it's a very machiavellian

830
00:29:38,159 --> 00:29:41,200
moment for me because i'm just oh look

831
00:29:39,840 --> 00:29:44,399
at all these plates i'm having to spin

832
00:29:41,200 --> 00:29:46,159
sorry guys in reality i'm going uh oh oh

833
00:29:44,399 --> 00:29:48,080
i need to answer that

834
00:29:46,159 --> 00:29:49,520
perception check quick distract divert

835
00:29:48,080 --> 00:29:52,000
attention

836
00:29:49,520 --> 00:29:53,440
i've i've done that exact thing

837
00:29:52,000 --> 00:29:56,320
you use it as like a narrative

838
00:29:53,440 --> 00:29:58,640
cliffhanger yeah like hey while we

839
00:29:56,320 --> 00:30:00,480
you sit there and stew about whether you

840
00:29:58,640 --> 00:30:02,640
know how this dice roll is going to go

841
00:30:00,480 --> 00:30:04,159
let's cut back to something else so i

842
00:30:02,640 --> 00:30:06,559
can look like we're doing this for

843
00:30:04,159 --> 00:30:08,880
narrative effect but really i need i

844
00:30:06,559 --> 00:30:10,720
need to figure this out and rather i was

845
00:30:08,880 --> 00:30:13,600
like here's the behind the curtains dm

846
00:30:10,720 --> 00:30:16,320
magic um it just like anything else

847
00:30:13,600 --> 00:30:18,320
misdirection hey look over here yeah and

848
00:30:16,320 --> 00:30:20,720
ignore the fact that over here i have no

849
00:30:18,320 --> 00:30:22,320
idea what's going on yeah yeah it's

850
00:30:20,720 --> 00:30:24,960
perfect it's a perfect crime because

851
00:30:22,320 --> 00:30:24,960
nobody knows

852
00:30:25,039 --> 00:30:30,159
look who pulled a nickel out from behind

853
00:30:26,960 --> 00:30:32,000
your ear tada yep

854
00:30:30,159 --> 00:30:32,799
so that's that's that i guess that's my

855
00:30:32,000 --> 00:30:35,600
uh

856
00:30:32,799 --> 00:30:37,039
one of my little tricks and tactics for

857
00:30:35,600 --> 00:30:38,880
for adapting to players but i'd yeah

858
00:30:37,039 --> 00:30:40,399
again just just to

859
00:30:38,880 --> 00:30:41,919
just to repeat what you mentioned

860
00:30:40,399 --> 00:30:44,240
earlier on about that

861
00:30:41,919 --> 00:30:46,640
you know try and learn to

862
00:30:44,240 --> 00:30:48,720
look forward to and to appreciate those

863
00:30:46,640 --> 00:30:50,080
surprise moments because they that's

864
00:30:48,720 --> 00:30:51,919
that that's the you know that's why

865
00:30:50,080 --> 00:30:54,799
we're playing these role-playing games

866
00:30:51,919 --> 00:30:57,919
is to have that dynamic surprise

867
00:30:54,799 --> 00:30:59,360
moments it's not just a a series of

868
00:30:57,919 --> 00:31:02,159
lineages yeah it's not it's not the

869
00:30:59,360 --> 00:31:03,519
alphabet a to z and yay we got to z you

870
00:31:02,159 --> 00:31:05,200
know yeah

871
00:31:03,519 --> 00:31:07,200
yeah yeah you know it's not just the

872
00:31:05,200 --> 00:31:08,960
linear predetermined events it's the

873
00:31:07,200 --> 00:31:10,240
whole point is that everybody including

874
00:31:08,960 --> 00:31:11,919
the dm

875
00:31:10,240 --> 00:31:14,720
is along for the journey and is

876
00:31:11,919 --> 00:31:18,480
surprised by the the meander that the

877
00:31:14,720 --> 00:31:20,720
river takes along that way and uh i mean

878
00:31:18,480 --> 00:31:22,320
i'm i'm certainly hyped i've had i've

879
00:31:20,720 --> 00:31:24,240
not deemed for a month because of the

880
00:31:22,320 --> 00:31:26,159
various scheduling issues now i'm supe

881
00:31:24,240 --> 00:31:27,440
i've hyped myself up uh for tomorrow

882
00:31:26,159 --> 00:31:28,960
night so

883
00:31:27,440 --> 00:31:30,799
i'm happy with

884
00:31:28,960 --> 00:31:34,640
this chat today

885
00:31:30,799 --> 00:31:37,760
yeah um you know i i will say i used uh

886
00:31:34,640 --> 00:31:40,640
the end of my show i try to let end

887
00:31:37,760 --> 00:31:42,720
every episode on like a cliffhanger yeah

888
00:31:40,640 --> 00:31:45,120
model it after like television

889
00:31:42,720 --> 00:31:47,840
and honestly the most surprising thing

890
00:31:45,120 --> 00:31:48,960
that's happened thus far was in our 30th

891
00:31:47,840 --> 00:31:51,440
episode

892
00:31:48,960 --> 00:31:53,039
our pacifist cleric

893
00:31:51,440 --> 00:31:55,360
killed

894
00:31:53,039 --> 00:31:59,039
essentially their

895
00:31:55,360 --> 00:32:01,840
consistent npc companion who was there

896
00:31:59,039 --> 00:32:03,919
for kind of the lore dumps and part of

897
00:32:01,840 --> 00:32:05,279
the the narrative

898
00:32:03,919 --> 00:32:07,120
and she was

899
00:32:05,279 --> 00:32:08,880
she served many purposes both

900
00:32:07,120 --> 00:32:11,279
narratively and

901
00:32:08,880 --> 00:32:14,080
you know in the mechanics for me

902
00:32:11,279 --> 00:32:15,440
and she was not a pleasant person but

903
00:32:14,080 --> 00:32:17,440
not evil

904
00:32:15,440 --> 00:32:20,320
and my pacifist cleric had just had

905
00:32:17,440 --> 00:32:22,320
enough of her like denigrating the party

906
00:32:20,320 --> 00:32:23,440
and being condescending

907
00:32:22,320 --> 00:32:25,200
and

908
00:32:23,440 --> 00:32:26,080
killed her with spiritual weapon

909
00:32:25,200 --> 00:32:31,039
oh

910
00:32:26,080 --> 00:32:33,360
and i i remember i everybody watching it

911
00:32:31,039 --> 00:32:36,240
and zoom as we're doing the show

912
00:32:33,360 --> 00:32:39,120
just jaw dropped as soon as the show was

913
00:32:36,240 --> 00:32:40,960
over i went back and i screen captured

914
00:32:39,120 --> 00:32:42,720
exactly that moment

915
00:32:40,960 --> 00:32:45,840
it's it's clear as day

916
00:32:42,720 --> 00:32:49,200
um everybody except him just mouth a

917
00:32:45,840 --> 00:32:51,440
gape and it was it was great

918
00:32:49,200 --> 00:32:54,480
and i remember thinking as it's

919
00:32:51,440 --> 00:32:56,720
happening wow this is really great also

920
00:32:54,480 --> 00:32:58,799
thank god this is the end of the episode

921
00:32:56,720 --> 00:33:00,559
because i absolutely do not have

922
00:32:58,799 --> 00:33:02,240
anything to do i was like wow look at

923
00:33:00,559 --> 00:33:04,240
that what a great ending to an episode

924
00:33:02,240 --> 00:33:07,360
we'll see everybody next week

925
00:33:04,240 --> 00:33:10,480
and was just like wow i absolutely

926
00:33:07,360 --> 00:33:11,600
dodged a bullet there i would

927
00:33:10,480 --> 00:33:14,320
it was

928
00:33:11,600 --> 00:33:15,600
within character to an extent uh so it

929
00:33:14,320 --> 00:33:16,960
wasn't just you know that's what my

930
00:33:15,600 --> 00:33:20,320
character would do

931
00:33:16,960 --> 00:33:22,000
um it was it was a legit yeah move and

932
00:33:20,320 --> 00:33:25,039
everything and just

933
00:33:22,000 --> 00:33:27,120
everybody just was was shocked and it

934
00:33:25,039 --> 00:33:28,880
was it was it was magnificent and like i

935
00:33:27,120 --> 00:33:31,039
said i definitely would not have been

936
00:33:28,880 --> 00:33:32,799
able to do the moment justice if it had

937
00:33:31,039 --> 00:33:34,640
happened 10 minutes into an episode we

938
00:33:32,799 --> 00:33:36,960
would have absolutely gone to a break

939
00:33:34,640 --> 00:33:38,720
look man i know i know you just tuned in

940
00:33:36,960 --> 00:33:39,519
it's 10 minutes into the show

941
00:33:38,720 --> 00:33:42,000
i

942
00:33:39,519 --> 00:33:44,559
i absolutely need a minute um

943
00:33:42,000 --> 00:33:45,360
so i got i got bailed out there uh which

944
00:33:44,559 --> 00:33:47,600
i

945
00:33:45,360 --> 00:33:49,679
like to this day i i just look back on

946
00:33:47,600 --> 00:33:52,159
that and just like wow i i could not

947
00:33:49,679 --> 00:33:54,480
have given it the proper moment that it

948
00:33:52,159 --> 00:33:56,720
needed so the next episode we pick up

949
00:33:54,480 --> 00:33:58,399
like right after she dies but a much

950
00:33:56,720 --> 00:34:00,720
more narrative

951
00:33:58,399 --> 00:34:02,320
telling of it that

952
00:34:00,720 --> 00:34:04,559
you know kind of built

953
00:34:02,320 --> 00:34:07,519
the next episode from there and i was

954
00:34:04,559 --> 00:34:11,280
glad that i had a week between the shows

955
00:34:07,519 --> 00:34:13,119
to really give that that moment justice

956
00:34:11,280 --> 00:34:14,399
yeah count count your blessings you had

957
00:34:13,119 --> 00:34:16,159
that man because i'm just thinking now

958
00:34:14,399 --> 00:34:18,000
of all the poor dms out there where that

959
00:34:16,159 --> 00:34:19,280
stuff has you said like happens

960
00:34:18,000 --> 00:34:21,520
you know midway or right at the

961
00:34:19,280 --> 00:34:23,919
beginning and they're just like

962
00:34:21,520 --> 00:34:23,919
oh

963
00:34:24,240 --> 00:34:28,800
but i wanted to say um

964
00:34:26,399 --> 00:34:31,679
what that the secret sauce there

965
00:34:28,800 --> 00:34:32,720
that the really the really good

966
00:34:31,679 --> 00:34:35,440
juicy

967
00:34:32,720 --> 00:34:37,679
part of d d for me is that is that venn

968
00:34:35,440 --> 00:34:39,119
diagram with the two circles and in one

969
00:34:37,679 --> 00:34:41,040
circle you have

970
00:34:39,119 --> 00:34:43,839
this is what my character would do and

971
00:34:41,040 --> 00:34:46,320
on the other circle you have

972
00:34:43,839 --> 00:34:48,079
doesn't harm anybody and progresses the

973
00:34:46,320 --> 00:34:50,399
story in a you know in a way that makes

974
00:34:48,079 --> 00:34:53,040
sense and adds more narrative beats

975
00:34:50,399 --> 00:34:55,119
where those two circles overlap is oh

976
00:34:53,040 --> 00:34:56,399
that's that's the sweet spot that's

977
00:34:55,119 --> 00:34:58,480
where

978
00:34:56,399 --> 00:35:01,200
where basically all players should be

979
00:34:58,480 --> 00:35:03,040
trying to trying to aim for that balance

980
00:35:01,200 --> 00:35:04,560
of hitting that middle of that venn

981
00:35:03,040 --> 00:35:07,200
diagram of

982
00:35:04,560 --> 00:35:07,920
this makes sense in character it's it

983
00:35:07,200 --> 00:35:09,839
was

984
00:35:07,920 --> 00:35:11,680
feasibly something that they would do

985
00:35:09,839 --> 00:35:13,440
but doesn't isn't a detriment to the

986
00:35:11,680 --> 00:35:15,920
rest of the game and isn't stepping on

987
00:35:13,440 --> 00:35:17,599
anyone's toes and pushes the narrative

988
00:35:15,920 --> 00:35:20,240
forward that is

989
00:35:17,599 --> 00:35:24,140
that is the gold dust that we

990
00:35:20,240 --> 00:35:27,449
should all be striving for

991
00:35:24,140 --> 00:35:27,449
[Music]

992
00:35:32,960 --> 00:35:36,079
we had a

993
00:35:34,880 --> 00:35:37,440
level

994
00:35:36,079 --> 00:35:39,440
17

995
00:35:37,440 --> 00:35:41,520
uh one shot uh assaults on mount

996
00:35:39,440 --> 00:35:44,480
celestia where they went and fought the

997
00:35:41,520 --> 00:35:46,079
gods just because as you do yeah yeah

998
00:35:44,480 --> 00:35:47,839
yeah it's if you can do a high level one

999
00:35:46,079 --> 00:35:49,760
shot ribbon is a good source you know by

1000
00:35:47,839 --> 00:35:51,839
tier three tier four you're basically a

1001
00:35:49,760 --> 00:35:54,079
god okay cool we're gonna go fight the

1002
00:35:51,839 --> 00:35:57,359
gods there um

1003
00:35:54,079 --> 00:36:00,640
and we did it by domain the last episode

1004
00:35:57,359 --> 00:36:03,599
the domain was peace and you assume

1005
00:36:00,640 --> 00:36:04,800
level 17 um high

1006
00:36:03,599 --> 00:36:06,560
high level

1007
00:36:04,800 --> 00:36:07,920
people want to do

1008
00:36:06,560 --> 00:36:10,079
their

1009
00:36:07,920 --> 00:36:12,480
really cool

1010
00:36:10,079 --> 00:36:14,880
high level abilities yeah they pick this

1011
00:36:12,480 --> 00:36:17,200
character on purpose they they might not

1012
00:36:14,880 --> 00:36:19,680
get to see it at this high level

1013
00:36:17,200 --> 00:36:20,560
very often so you know you build the

1014
00:36:19,680 --> 00:36:23,200
thing

1015
00:36:20,560 --> 00:36:26,160
and you're fighting gods like we said

1016
00:36:23,200 --> 00:36:28,480
and my entire party came built for the

1017
00:36:26,160 --> 00:36:31,520
domain of peace

1018
00:36:28,480 --> 00:36:32,960
by trying not to

1019
00:36:31,520 --> 00:36:34,960
fight

1020
00:36:32,960 --> 00:36:37,280
the entire episode the power of

1021
00:36:34,960 --> 00:36:38,320
embracing power fantasy episode go fight

1022
00:36:37,280 --> 00:36:42,240
the gods

1023
00:36:38,320 --> 00:36:44,880
they insisted on being peaceful and not

1024
00:36:42,240 --> 00:36:46,560
punishing the perpetrators and this

1025
00:36:44,880 --> 00:36:49,280
other thing

1026
00:36:46,560 --> 00:36:51,200
and it was so much fun it completely

1027
00:36:49,280 --> 00:36:52,720
wrecked my ending it was a one-shot so

1028
00:36:51,200 --> 00:36:56,480
it was a little more linear yeah in the

1029
00:36:52,720 --> 00:36:58,400
campaign but it absolutely wrecked

1030
00:36:56,480 --> 00:37:00,720
everything i had prepared just

1031
00:36:58,400 --> 00:37:02,800
obliterated it i might as well have just

1032
00:37:00,720 --> 00:37:04,400
gathered four people off the street and

1033
00:37:02,800 --> 00:37:06,320
be like hey listen to me tell a story

1034
00:37:04,400 --> 00:37:08,960
for three hours

1035
00:37:06,320 --> 00:37:10,800
and it was it was so much fun and it was

1036
00:37:08,960 --> 00:37:12,480
a surprise that took place over almost

1037
00:37:10,800 --> 00:37:15,599
four hours

1038
00:37:12,480 --> 00:37:18,160
okay eventually they're gonna kind of go

1039
00:37:15,599 --> 00:37:20,560
out go back to the whole reason why

1040
00:37:18,160 --> 00:37:22,640
we're here in the meta let's let's kill

1041
00:37:20,560 --> 00:37:24,800
some gods let's go nuts let's use those

1042
00:37:22,640 --> 00:37:26,320
tier four abilities and they stuck to it

1043
00:37:24,800 --> 00:37:29,359
the entire time

1044
00:37:26,320 --> 00:37:31,280
and i i had to adapt to

1045
00:37:29,359 --> 00:37:32,400
this thing from the jump

1046
00:37:31,280 --> 00:37:34,079
about halfway through i was like they're

1047
00:37:32,400 --> 00:37:35,520
gonna they're gonna do this they're you

1048
00:37:34,079 --> 00:37:37,119
know they're about it this is what this

1049
00:37:35,520 --> 00:37:38,400
is what they came to do

1050
00:37:37,119 --> 00:37:40,320
and

1051
00:37:38,400 --> 00:37:42,640
completely unprepared for the ending you

1052
00:37:40,320 --> 00:37:44,640
know you vanquish the evil god everybody

1053
00:37:42,640 --> 00:37:46,560
wins it's a great moment you get to say

1054
00:37:44,640 --> 00:37:47,839
you killed a god how often and these

1055
00:37:46,560 --> 00:37:48,720
people were like nope

1056
00:37:47,839 --> 00:37:51,280
nope

1057
00:37:48,720 --> 00:37:53,280
nope we're gonna forgive the god and do

1058
00:37:51,280 --> 00:37:54,560
this thing and so for three hours i just

1059
00:37:53,280 --> 00:37:55,680
got to be wow they're just going to keep

1060
00:37:54,560 --> 00:37:57,599
going with this they're just going to

1061
00:37:55,680 --> 00:38:00,320
keep going with this all right maybe

1062
00:37:57,599 --> 00:38:01,119
eventually they'll come around and no no

1063
00:38:00,320 --> 00:38:02,560
no

1064
00:38:01,119 --> 00:38:03,680
and then i

1065
00:38:02,560 --> 00:38:06,720
just

1066
00:38:03,680 --> 00:38:08,880
one of the positive improv moments of my

1067
00:38:06,720 --> 00:38:09,760
dungeon master career whatever that may

1068
00:38:08,880 --> 00:38:12,560
be

1069
00:38:09,760 --> 00:38:15,760
uh completely improv to the ending and

1070
00:38:12,560 --> 00:38:17,359
they they loved it it was a huge relief

1071
00:38:15,760 --> 00:38:19,680
it was a

1072
00:38:17,359 --> 00:38:22,160
hopefully the give back to them for me

1073
00:38:19,680 --> 00:38:23,920
spending four hours completely surprised

1074
00:38:22,160 --> 00:38:26,160
that hopefully the narrat you know the

1075
00:38:23,920 --> 00:38:28,000
ending to them was was satisfactory

1076
00:38:26,160 --> 00:38:29,599
because i got i got to be surprised for

1077
00:38:28,000 --> 00:38:31,200
four hours and

1078
00:38:29,599 --> 00:38:32,960
as a as a dm let's be honest that

1079
00:38:31,200 --> 00:38:35,680
doesn't that doesn't happen it it

1080
00:38:32,960 --> 00:38:37,359
doesn't for the most part you know chaos

1081
00:38:35,680 --> 00:38:38,960
yes but just

1082
00:38:37,359 --> 00:38:41,040
straightforward

1083
00:38:38,960 --> 00:38:42,160
sticking to their characters

1084
00:38:41,040 --> 00:38:44,160
which i should have known they would

1085
00:38:42,160 --> 00:38:47,280
have done and i spent three hours or

1086
00:38:44,160 --> 00:38:49,520
four hours adapting to this with a grand

1087
00:38:47,280 --> 00:38:51,839
payoff at the end and go i

1088
00:38:49,520 --> 00:38:53,680
i got i got away with it that could have

1089
00:38:51,839 --> 00:38:56,079
gone horribly wrong

1090
00:38:53,680 --> 00:38:57,359
and but i had three hours to prepare for

1091
00:38:56,079 --> 00:38:59,680
them just to go all right man they're

1092
00:38:57,359 --> 00:39:01,040
just gonna do this the whole way so you

1093
00:38:59,680 --> 00:39:02,960
better come up with a peaceful ending

1094
00:39:01,040 --> 00:39:04,960
where they don't kill the god

1095
00:39:02,960 --> 00:39:07,280
and it it worked out it was it was an

1096
00:39:04,960 --> 00:39:09,920
amazing time uh just to just to watch

1097
00:39:07,280 --> 00:39:11,839
them stick to their character yeah and

1098
00:39:09,920 --> 00:39:14,400
have like i said to have to adapt for an

1099
00:39:11,839 --> 00:39:17,040
entire an entire one shot

1100
00:39:14,400 --> 00:39:18,560
making it up as i go basically because i

1101
00:39:17,040 --> 00:39:21,520
they just would they just wouldn't fight

1102
00:39:18,560 --> 00:39:24,240
it was great that that is up man i'm

1103
00:39:21,520 --> 00:39:26,320
impressed because for

1104
00:39:24,240 --> 00:39:28,480
i guess the stakes are slightly lower if

1105
00:39:26,320 --> 00:39:30,880
you've got the safety net of well we've

1106
00:39:28,480 --> 00:39:33,839
got an infinite number of sessions after

1107
00:39:30,880 --> 00:39:35,760
this one so if i don't do a great job

1108
00:39:33,839 --> 00:39:38,079
that's fine i can kind of

1109
00:39:35,760 --> 00:39:41,040
fix it but for the one shot it's it's

1110
00:39:38,079 --> 00:39:42,240
like this has to finish and it has to be

1111
00:39:41,040 --> 00:39:43,599
you know there has to be some kind of

1112
00:39:42,240 --> 00:39:45,920
payoff at the end

1113
00:39:43,599 --> 00:39:49,040
it was the season finale to our

1114
00:39:45,920 --> 00:39:51,359
wednesday one shot show so it was even

1115
00:39:49,040 --> 00:39:52,800
doubly that uh just

1116
00:39:51,359 --> 00:39:54,560
you know and like i said i wanted to

1117
00:39:52,800 --> 00:39:57,119
send everybody out season one season

1118
00:39:54,560 --> 00:39:59,520
finale watch everybody kill gods

1119
00:39:57,119 --> 00:40:02,480
happiness restored yay

1120
00:39:59,520 --> 00:40:06,160
and instead i got hey watch them go up

1121
00:40:02,480 --> 00:40:07,760
to mount celestia and talk it out um be

1122
00:40:06,160 --> 00:40:09,200
really be really forgiving and

1123
00:40:07,760 --> 00:40:10,800
understanding and see things from a

1124
00:40:09,200 --> 00:40:12,400
different point of view and maybe

1125
00:40:10,800 --> 00:40:14,640
empathize with the villain and their

1126
00:40:12,400 --> 00:40:17,119
frustrations that's that's hard to put

1127
00:40:14,640 --> 00:40:18,960
on the cover of an adventure module um

1128
00:40:17,119 --> 00:40:21,280
it just it just isn't nobody's gonna buy

1129
00:40:18,960 --> 00:40:24,480
that yeah

1130
00:40:21,280 --> 00:40:26,400
so it was it was just a lot of fun just

1131
00:40:24,480 --> 00:40:28,720
to do it despite the fact that i'm

1132
00:40:26,400 --> 00:40:32,319
watching this narrative i worked on for

1133
00:40:28,720 --> 00:40:34,960
quite a long time just completely

1134
00:40:32,319 --> 00:40:37,280
just be set on fire if i just lit pages

1135
00:40:34,960 --> 00:40:38,480
of paper on fire while i was doing this

1136
00:40:37,280 --> 00:40:39,599
it would have been the same thing be

1137
00:40:38,480 --> 00:40:40,400
like

1138
00:40:39,599 --> 00:40:41,839
yeah

1139
00:40:40,400 --> 00:40:44,160
because they they

1140
00:40:41,839 --> 00:40:46,640
turn into dust and in the in the breeze

1141
00:40:44,160 --> 00:40:48,240
yeah yeah flash paper like a magician

1142
00:40:46,640 --> 00:40:50,640
yeah

1143
00:40:48,240 --> 00:40:53,040
well there's a lot but another uh

1144
00:40:50,640 --> 00:40:55,520
metaphor there for magicians uh as a as

1145
00:40:53,040 --> 00:40:57,040
being a dm i think there's a i'm i'm

1146
00:40:55,520 --> 00:40:58,560
slowly starting to see it's like a

1147
00:40:57,040 --> 00:40:59,359
mirror image of each other and i'm not

1148
00:40:58,560 --> 00:41:01,119
sure

1149
00:40:59,359 --> 00:41:03,119
how i feel about that

1150
00:41:01,119 --> 00:41:05,119
it's it's part charlotte and part con

1151
00:41:03,119 --> 00:41:07,280
man like the misdirection thing i think

1152
00:41:05,119 --> 00:41:09,119
is exceptionally fair now that i kind of

1153
00:41:07,280 --> 00:41:10,160
realized how it works and how you can

1154
00:41:09,119 --> 00:41:12,400
make it

1155
00:41:10,160 --> 00:41:13,280
absolutely apply to a lot of situations

1156
00:41:12,400 --> 00:41:14,640
in this

1157
00:41:13,280 --> 00:41:16,319
so

1158
00:41:14,640 --> 00:41:17,839
yeah i just i i

1159
00:41:16,319 --> 00:41:20,400
dice tricks aren't as impressive as card

1160
00:41:17,839 --> 00:41:22,800
tricks maybe i know but that when people

1161
00:41:20,400 --> 00:41:24,800
say you know the magic of d and d

1162
00:41:22,800 --> 00:41:28,000
that phrase has another meaning to me

1163
00:41:24,800 --> 00:41:30,160
now which i'm quite happy with

1164
00:41:28,000 --> 00:41:32,720
watch me saw the cleric in half oh wait

1165
00:41:30,160 --> 00:41:35,680
oh not that kind sorry uh uh roll for

1166
00:41:32,720 --> 00:41:37,680
persuasion then i'm sorry

1167
00:41:35,680 --> 00:41:38,960
um

1168
00:41:37,680 --> 00:41:40,880
so

1169
00:41:38,960 --> 00:41:42,800
we've mentioned uh we've discussed at

1170
00:41:40,880 --> 00:41:45,200
length around this kind of moment to

1171
00:41:42,800 --> 00:41:46,480
moment uh you know flying by the sea of

1172
00:41:45,200 --> 00:41:47,839
your pants

1173
00:41:46,480 --> 00:41:50,720
what about then

1174
00:41:47,839 --> 00:41:52,880
as i said before this mac the macro side

1175
00:41:50,720 --> 00:41:53,920
of things you know and that can be just

1176
00:41:52,880 --> 00:41:56,319
as

1177
00:41:53,920 --> 00:41:57,520
although it's not quite as

1178
00:41:56,319 --> 00:41:58,800
immediate

1179
00:41:57,520 --> 00:42:01,839
an issue

1180
00:41:58,800 --> 00:42:03,920
it can be just as leading with pitfalls

1181
00:42:01,839 --> 00:42:06,720
and so what i mean by that is

1182
00:42:03,920 --> 00:42:09,440
you know some some players are keen and

1183
00:42:06,720 --> 00:42:11,680
eager and all right and here's my mother

1184
00:42:09,440 --> 00:42:13,440
here's my brother here's where they live

1185
00:42:11,680 --> 00:42:16,000
here's this that and the other

1186
00:42:13,440 --> 00:42:18,319
that was not intended to rhyme but i'm

1187
00:42:16,000 --> 00:42:19,520
happy i did um

1188
00:42:18,319 --> 00:42:20,640
and then you know you've got other

1189
00:42:19,520 --> 00:42:22,880
players who are there for a different

1190
00:42:20,640 --> 00:42:24,800
reason and i just like yeah i'm a dude

1191
00:42:22,880 --> 00:42:28,800
and now i'm going adventuring and that's

1192
00:42:24,800 --> 00:42:31,599
fine so how do you as a dm then

1193
00:42:28,800 --> 00:42:32,800
kind of reconcile those two extremes

1194
00:42:31,599 --> 00:42:35,599
and then

1195
00:42:32,800 --> 00:42:38,960
question 1.2 is

1196
00:42:35,599 --> 00:42:40,880
how do you adapt your setting

1197
00:42:38,960 --> 00:42:42,960
homebrew or otherwise

1198
00:42:40,880 --> 00:42:46,319
to accommodate those

1199
00:42:42,960 --> 00:42:48,480
players that have put some investment in

1200
00:42:46,319 --> 00:42:51,280
i think one of the important things is

1201
00:42:48,480 --> 00:42:52,960
the idea of just having some boundaries

1202
00:42:51,280 --> 00:42:54,560
wherever they may be

1203
00:42:52,960 --> 00:42:56,400
you still owe it to the rest of the

1204
00:42:54,560 --> 00:42:57,760
group to tell

1205
00:42:56,400 --> 00:42:58,800
i don't want to say like your story i

1206
00:42:57,760 --> 00:43:00,880
hate that

1207
00:42:58,800 --> 00:43:02,000
kind of view of it but the story that

1208
00:43:00,880 --> 00:43:04,000
you've

1209
00:43:02,000 --> 00:43:06,400
crafted on your end as the dungeon

1210
00:43:04,000 --> 00:43:07,359
master to share with your group

1211
00:43:06,400 --> 00:43:08,560
that

1212
00:43:07,359 --> 00:43:10,480
i think

1213
00:43:08,560 --> 00:43:12,000
there's a certain amount of like respect

1214
00:43:10,480 --> 00:43:14,319
you know there's always that meme where

1215
00:43:12,000 --> 00:43:15,520
it's you know a bunch of wizards and

1216
00:43:14,319 --> 00:43:16,880
knights and everything and then

1217
00:43:15,520 --> 00:43:18,960
somebody's dressed

1218
00:43:16,880 --> 00:43:20,880
like a modern clown

1219
00:43:18,960 --> 00:43:23,839
and you know it's you know the meme is

1220
00:43:20,880 --> 00:43:26,000
like when dms allow home brew yeah yeah

1221
00:43:23,839 --> 00:43:27,200
and stuff like that and so like at the

1222
00:43:26,000 --> 00:43:30,000
extreme

1223
00:43:27,200 --> 00:43:32,319
be respectful of your dm and kind of

1224
00:43:30,000 --> 00:43:34,560
find some way to make it work don't

1225
00:43:32,319 --> 00:43:38,000
dictate you know i want to play

1226
00:43:34,560 --> 00:43:38,960
a futuristic gunslinger in a low magic

1227
00:43:38,000 --> 00:43:41,520
setting

1228
00:43:38,960 --> 00:43:43,440
so i think i think that's just the basic

1229
00:43:41,520 --> 00:43:45,839
one the other the opposite end of that

1230
00:43:43,440 --> 00:43:47,599
is do your best as a dungeon master to

1231
00:43:45,839 --> 00:43:49,520
make to make it fit

1232
00:43:47,599 --> 00:43:52,240
that

1233
00:43:49,520 --> 00:43:54,319
they want to play this character in

1234
00:43:52,240 --> 00:43:56,079
their head whether you see it or not

1235
00:43:54,319 --> 00:43:59,359
they believe this character will fit

1236
00:43:56,079 --> 00:44:00,880
into the setting the story the campaign

1237
00:43:59,359 --> 00:44:03,040
you're about to run

1238
00:44:00,880 --> 00:44:05,599
and i think you owe it to them to try to

1239
00:44:03,040 --> 00:44:08,800
make it work within reason

1240
00:44:05,599 --> 00:44:10,800
and that's one of those parts is is that

1241
00:44:08,800 --> 00:44:12,480
you get to kind of contribute

1242
00:44:10,800 --> 00:44:16,240
and help

1243
00:44:12,480 --> 00:44:19,599
kind of guide this rough concept to fit

1244
00:44:16,240 --> 00:44:21,280
your setting it shows investment in you

1245
00:44:19,599 --> 00:44:23,359
as the player players like wow this guy

1246
00:44:21,280 --> 00:44:26,560
really cares enough to kind of work with

1247
00:44:23,359 --> 00:44:28,880
me to fit this in despite it not being

1248
00:44:26,560 --> 00:44:31,760
you know exactly what i want

1249
00:44:28,880 --> 00:44:33,680
and the other thing i think

1250
00:44:31,760 --> 00:44:35,839
is just

1251
00:44:33,680 --> 00:44:39,280
everybody's there to have fun don't be

1252
00:44:35,839 --> 00:44:41,280
so rigid about everything and

1253
00:44:39,280 --> 00:44:42,480
make it a place for everybody that's

1254
00:44:41,280 --> 00:44:45,520
that's the point of this it's a group

1255
00:44:42,480 --> 00:44:47,920
activity and so don't just be like nope

1256
00:44:45,520 --> 00:44:49,680
can't do it won't fit it in refuse

1257
00:44:47,920 --> 00:44:52,079
doesn't fit my setting

1258
00:44:49,680 --> 00:44:54,960
find a way to make it work if you can if

1259
00:44:52,079 --> 00:44:57,119
it if it doesn't then it it just doesn't

1260
00:44:54,960 --> 00:44:58,880
but like i said do your best you you owe

1261
00:44:57,119 --> 00:45:01,440
it to these people who want to play in

1262
00:44:58,880 --> 00:45:03,359
your game and to have fun um and like i

1263
00:45:01,440 --> 00:45:05,440
said who believe in their head their

1264
00:45:03,359 --> 00:45:07,359
character fits perfectly in this thing

1265
00:45:05,440 --> 00:45:09,119
you just need to gear them you know

1266
00:45:07,359 --> 00:45:10,400
guide them a little bit you're the

1267
00:45:09,119 --> 00:45:12,800
you're the one that kind of knows the

1268
00:45:10,400 --> 00:45:15,599
most and you owe it to them to try

1269
00:45:12,800 --> 00:45:18,480
yeah absolutely i think

1270
00:45:15,599 --> 00:45:19,839
i think because it is you know d d is

1271
00:45:18,480 --> 00:45:23,119
such a

1272
00:45:19,839 --> 00:45:25,839
pop culture vogue thing right now as

1273
00:45:23,119 --> 00:45:29,839
such a you know popular thing that it

1274
00:45:25,839 --> 00:45:33,520
has a bit of weight and and gravitas to

1275
00:45:29,839 --> 00:45:35,119
it that people treat it

1276
00:45:33,520 --> 00:45:38,480
very delicately

1277
00:45:35,119 --> 00:45:39,920
when in reality just just it's the same

1278
00:45:38,480 --> 00:45:41,359
as just how you should deal with your

1279
00:45:39,920 --> 00:45:43,680
you know your everyday life and your

1280
00:45:41,359 --> 00:45:45,599
everyday human interactions where

1281
00:45:43,680 --> 00:45:47,119
a lot of life is meeting people in the

1282
00:45:45,599 --> 00:45:48,960
middle is is

1283
00:45:47,119 --> 00:45:51,200
having that compromise and that is

1284
00:45:48,960 --> 00:45:54,240
that's not unique to to dnd that as i

1285
00:45:51,200 --> 00:45:57,359
said that's just an element of being a

1286
00:45:54,240 --> 00:45:59,599
functional you know uh nice human being

1287
00:45:57,359 --> 00:46:01,200
a member of a member of human society

1288
00:45:59,599 --> 00:46:03,359
yeah and then and that's you know that's

1289
00:46:01,200 --> 00:46:04,720
it that's just that basic thing that you

1290
00:46:03,359 --> 00:46:07,040
know we should learn when when we're

1291
00:46:04,720 --> 00:46:09,040
children the same is said for d d and

1292
00:46:07,040 --> 00:46:10,480
people say well no that's

1293
00:46:09,040 --> 00:46:12,319
you know that's my character and that's

1294
00:46:10,480 --> 00:46:13,920
how i'm gonna play him and

1295
00:46:12,319 --> 00:46:16,480
it's like well no you wouldn't you

1296
00:46:13,920 --> 00:46:17,920
wouldn't go to the shop and say well i'm

1297
00:46:16,480 --> 00:46:19,599
only going to pay half price for this

1298
00:46:17,920 --> 00:46:21,119
and that's that you wouldn't you people

1299
00:46:19,599 --> 00:46:23,440
just don't do that that's what danielle

1300
00:46:21,119 --> 00:46:26,560
would do

1301
00:46:23,440 --> 00:46:29,280
sorry that's that's my reason

1302
00:46:26,560 --> 00:46:31,280
uh yeah like so it's it is just that

1303
00:46:29,280 --> 00:46:33,040
quite it's simple and it's elegance of

1304
00:46:31,280 --> 00:46:34,800
just like me you know as you said it's

1305
00:46:33,040 --> 00:46:37,200
it's meeting in the middle it's

1306
00:46:34,800 --> 00:46:39,040
com i think maybe accommodation isn't

1307
00:46:37,200 --> 00:46:41,040
maybe a better word than adaptation i

1308
00:46:39,040 --> 00:46:42,960
know that's a bit of a bit of a faux pas

1309
00:46:41,040 --> 00:46:45,440
for today's topic but uh

1310
00:46:42,960 --> 00:46:47,040
we could we could

1311
00:46:45,440 --> 00:46:48,800
completely i'm just going to go back and

1312
00:46:47,040 --> 00:46:50,079
hack every time we say adaptation and

1313
00:46:48,800 --> 00:46:51,760
change it

1314
00:46:50,079 --> 00:46:53,680
adaptation

1315
00:46:51,760 --> 00:46:54,839
do a really bad job yeah yeah it's over

1316
00:46:53,680 --> 00:46:58,880
it yeah yeah

1317
00:46:54,839 --> 00:47:01,680
um but yeah that that that is how i i i

1318
00:46:58,880 --> 00:47:04,000
think of it is very much a well

1319
00:47:01,680 --> 00:47:05,920
that might not work as it is but let's

1320
00:47:04,000 --> 00:47:08,720
work together to see how we can make it

1321
00:47:05,920 --> 00:47:11,280
to see let's see how we can make it work

1322
00:47:08,720 --> 00:47:12,800
together i think it's basically

1323
00:47:11,280 --> 00:47:14,560
the silver bullet in that instance the

1324
00:47:12,800 --> 00:47:17,200
panacea of just like

1325
00:47:14,560 --> 00:47:19,920
here's a world that might have some

1326
00:47:17,200 --> 00:47:21,359
constraints some scope you know be it a

1327
00:47:19,920 --> 00:47:23,119
published event [ __ ]

1328
00:47:21,359 --> 00:47:24,160
you know rhyme with the frost maiden is

1329
00:47:23,119 --> 00:47:26,480
all

1330
00:47:24,160 --> 00:47:27,359
snowy and of a certain

1331
00:47:26,480 --> 00:47:30,160
theme

1332
00:47:27,359 --> 00:47:31,440
and as you said your ghost clown with a

1333
00:47:30,160 --> 00:47:34,960
laser beam

1334
00:47:31,440 --> 00:47:36,400
may jar somewhat for most of the other

1335
00:47:34,960 --> 00:47:37,520
players

1336
00:47:36,400 --> 00:47:39,680
so let's

1337
00:47:37,520 --> 00:47:41,599
let's see how we can

1338
00:47:39,680 --> 00:47:43,520
shift a few things here and there to

1339
00:47:41,599 --> 00:47:44,480
work it out together

1340
00:47:43,520 --> 00:47:47,520
so

1341
00:47:44,480 --> 00:47:50,000
we um just on on the snow so one of my

1342
00:47:47,520 --> 00:47:52,800
players in my swindle campaign wanted to

1343
00:47:50,000 --> 00:47:54,559
play uh lizard folk lizards being

1344
00:47:52,800 --> 00:47:56,400
cold-blooded how do they exist in

1345
00:47:54,559 --> 00:48:00,079
icelandale where it's cold

1346
00:47:56,400 --> 00:48:02,160
we came up with this idea of a boon from

1347
00:48:00,079 --> 00:48:04,880
the white dragon cryovain they worship

1348
00:48:02,160 --> 00:48:07,520
the dragon the dragon gives them a boon

1349
00:48:04,880 --> 00:48:11,200
to allow them to live in a place that's

1350
00:48:07,520 --> 00:48:13,040
inhospitable to lizard folks by most you

1351
00:48:11,200 --> 00:48:15,440
know logical senses yeah

1352
00:48:13,040 --> 00:48:16,559
and in that little moment of just being

1353
00:48:15,440 --> 00:48:18,720
like hey man here's how your lizard

1354
00:48:16,559 --> 00:48:19,599
man's gonna exist where it's called boom

1355
00:48:18,720 --> 00:48:22,319
done

1356
00:48:19,599 --> 00:48:24,319
we made it a kind of a part of the

1357
00:48:22,319 --> 00:48:26,400
campaign that involved all the

1358
00:48:24,319 --> 00:48:29,920
characters they had to fight the white

1359
00:48:26,400 --> 00:48:32,720
dragon uh in a emotional moment uh

1360
00:48:29,920 --> 00:48:34,720
towards the end of the campaign

1361
00:48:32,720 --> 00:48:36,559
but it was

1362
00:48:34,720 --> 00:48:38,880
what started as hey man how could how

1363
00:48:36,559 --> 00:48:40,160
can i make a lizard man work in your in

1364
00:48:38,880 --> 00:48:42,160
this story

1365
00:48:40,160 --> 00:48:43,520
a simple solution turned into this much

1366
00:48:42,160 --> 00:48:45,280
bigger thing

1367
00:48:43,520 --> 00:48:46,960
where i could have just said sorry

1368
00:48:45,280 --> 00:48:49,200
lizard people don't exist in the cold

1369
00:48:46,960 --> 00:48:50,880
figure something else out and we would

1370
00:48:49,200 --> 00:48:53,920
have missed out on

1371
00:48:50,880 --> 00:48:56,240
this not just a character arc for him

1372
00:48:53,920 --> 00:48:58,079
but for the whole group the whole group

1373
00:48:56,240 --> 00:48:59,920
had their own feelings towards the

1374
00:48:58,079 --> 00:49:01,760
dragon cryovain

1375
00:48:59,920 --> 00:49:04,319
you know irrespective of the lizard

1376
00:49:01,760 --> 00:49:05,920
man's uh thoughts on it who was

1377
00:49:04,319 --> 00:49:06,800
essentially his god

1378
00:49:05,920 --> 00:49:09,119
and

1379
00:49:06,800 --> 00:49:11,680
it started as simply just an answer to a

1380
00:49:09,119 --> 00:49:13,760
question to make something fit and it

1381
00:49:11,680 --> 00:49:16,720
grew into something

1382
00:49:13,760 --> 00:49:18,800
larger which is a payoff more than just

1383
00:49:16,720 --> 00:49:21,359
like i said saying nope sorry no lizard

1384
00:49:18,800 --> 00:49:23,440
band too cold next yeah

1385
00:49:21,359 --> 00:49:25,920
yeah i think i think treating them as

1386
00:49:23,440 --> 00:49:28,079
opportunities to world build is probably

1387
00:49:25,920 --> 00:49:30,400
the best way to

1388
00:49:28,079 --> 00:49:31,440
as a dm adapt to

1389
00:49:30,400 --> 00:49:33,839
the

1390
00:49:31,440 --> 00:49:35,920
the macro of your players

1391
00:49:33,839 --> 00:49:37,760
it's that moment of you know where

1392
00:49:35,920 --> 00:49:39,920
everybody uses it as a writing prompt

1393
00:49:37,760 --> 00:49:41,920
ask me something about my home brew

1394
00:49:39,920 --> 00:49:43,839
and instead of it formed as a question

1395
00:49:41,920 --> 00:49:45,359
it's it's a statement from somebody

1396
00:49:43,839 --> 00:49:46,880
who's going to be

1397
00:49:45,359 --> 00:49:49,520
in that world

1398
00:49:46,880 --> 00:49:52,319
i want to make this character how will

1399
00:49:49,520 --> 00:49:54,000
it fit in well i've never actually

1400
00:49:52,319 --> 00:49:57,119
thought about that so

1401
00:49:54,000 --> 00:49:58,880
let me figure out something here and

1402
00:49:57,119 --> 00:50:00,720
while you're doing that you can just

1403
00:49:58,880 --> 00:50:03,040
look at this and go okay not only am i

1404
00:50:00,720 --> 00:50:05,200
using it to rationalize something

1405
00:50:03,040 --> 00:50:07,520
appearing or to help

1406
00:50:05,200 --> 00:50:10,240
my player flush out something in their

1407
00:50:07,520 --> 00:50:13,760
story i'm also writing stuff that i am

1408
00:50:10,240 --> 00:50:15,520
absolutely going to use

1409
00:50:13,760 --> 00:50:17,119
you've somebody's given you a writing

1410
00:50:15,520 --> 00:50:20,160
prompt of something that you didn't know

1411
00:50:17,119 --> 00:50:21,680
was there or even had potentially even

1412
00:50:20,160 --> 00:50:23,760
thought to think about yeah

1413
00:50:21,680 --> 00:50:26,319
and you've you've been given a prompt

1414
00:50:23,760 --> 00:50:29,839
for something that a provides character

1415
00:50:26,319 --> 00:50:30,720
tie-in which is always gold and b

1416
00:50:29,839 --> 00:50:32,640
is

1417
00:50:30,720 --> 00:50:34,559
just like you said a aspect of world

1418
00:50:32,640 --> 00:50:37,119
building that you had no idea needed to

1419
00:50:34,559 --> 00:50:38,559
be done and now you get to do it

1420
00:50:37,119 --> 00:50:42,240
probably do it a little more than you

1421
00:50:38,559 --> 00:50:44,079
would otherwise and be happy for your

1422
00:50:42,240 --> 00:50:45,520
player that they get to really

1423
00:50:44,079 --> 00:50:48,000
experience something you put some

1424
00:50:45,520 --> 00:50:49,920
thought into

1425
00:50:48,000 --> 00:50:51,440
yeah i think a good a couple of examples

1426
00:50:49,920 --> 00:50:53,760
of that that i've

1427
00:50:51,440 --> 00:50:55,599
i've done

1428
00:50:53,760 --> 00:50:57,200
long story short is my my my player

1429
00:50:55,599 --> 00:50:59,280
characters are on the trail of a number

1430
00:50:57,200 --> 00:51:01,280
of mcguffins for like a powerful

1431
00:50:59,280 --> 00:51:03,359
artifacts whatever it is flavor of the

1432
00:51:01,280 --> 00:51:06,160
week and they've had a couple of those

1433
00:51:03,359 --> 00:51:08,160
chapters already set up from previous

1434
00:51:06,160 --> 00:51:10,559
campaigns at iran and this certainly

1435
00:51:08,160 --> 00:51:12,800
they're relatively tame or mundane or

1436
00:51:10,559 --> 00:51:14,079
general like um pick up and put down

1437
00:51:12,800 --> 00:51:17,359
kind of generic

1438
00:51:14,079 --> 00:51:19,520
and then i'd left a few open-ended

1439
00:51:17,359 --> 00:51:22,960
to deliberately tie them into character

1440
00:51:19,520 --> 00:51:26,319
backstories which in of itself is

1441
00:51:22,960 --> 00:51:28,240
pretty run rate um and then

1442
00:51:26,319 --> 00:51:29,920
one of my players

1443
00:51:28,240 --> 00:51:31,520
has gone with

1444
00:51:29,920 --> 00:51:33,520
a total

1445
00:51:31,520 --> 00:51:35,359
sorcerer which is

1446
00:51:33,520 --> 00:51:36,960
as far as i'm aware

1447
00:51:35,359 --> 00:51:39,040
kind of unusual

1448
00:51:36,960 --> 00:51:41,359
and another one went with a warforged

1449
00:51:39,040 --> 00:51:43,200
druid which i have

1450
00:51:41,359 --> 00:51:46,640
put my heart must leave and say

1451
00:51:43,200 --> 00:51:49,040
probably super unusual i it i i've loved

1452
00:51:46,640 --> 00:51:53,040
the warforged druid as a concept i just

1453
00:51:49,040 --> 00:51:55,119
i do keith baker in his everyone uh

1454
00:51:53,040 --> 00:51:56,800
dungeon masters guild supplement does

1455
00:51:55,119 --> 00:51:58,800
something to kind of address that where

1456
00:51:56,800 --> 00:52:00,559
they're basically like transformers when

1457
00:51:58,800 --> 00:52:02,480
they take wild shape sorry to get away

1458
00:52:00,559 --> 00:52:04,079
from your path but like i said i just

1459
00:52:02,480 --> 00:52:06,480
think i think they're i think it's very

1460
00:52:04,079 --> 00:52:08,559
cool yeah yeah that's totally his vibe

1461
00:52:06,480 --> 00:52:10,319
too and he's really lent into like the

1462
00:52:08,559 --> 00:52:12,160
kind of aesthetic

1463
00:52:10,319 --> 00:52:14,480
theming of it being all like he's made

1464
00:52:12,160 --> 00:52:15,599
out of like wooden vines and bark rather

1465
00:52:14,480 --> 00:52:17,359
than

1466
00:52:15,599 --> 00:52:19,599
kind of typical construct but both of

1467
00:52:17,359 --> 00:52:21,599
those posed very

1468
00:52:19,599 --> 00:52:22,800
tricky questions to me as a dm to be

1469
00:52:21,599 --> 00:52:25,119
like

1470
00:52:22,800 --> 00:52:27,119
okay this world i was thinking of

1471
00:52:25,119 --> 00:52:30,240
building wasn't going to have war forged

1472
00:52:27,119 --> 00:52:32,000
in it but what are the implications of

1473
00:52:30,240 --> 00:52:33,680
having this one warforged walking around

1474
00:52:32,000 --> 00:52:37,040
who's made out of wood

1475
00:52:33,680 --> 00:52:39,599
and i've spun out a whole chapter to get

1476
00:52:37,040 --> 00:52:41,839
one of these mcguffins based on

1477
00:52:39,599 --> 00:52:43,920
that warforged who he'd put in his

1478
00:52:41,839 --> 00:52:45,680
backstory he had amnesia because he has

1479
00:52:43,920 --> 00:52:47,760
been deactivated for a thousand years or

1480
00:52:45,680 --> 00:52:50,000
something and i was like perfect you've

1481
00:52:47,760 --> 00:52:51,440
even given me such a

1482
00:52:50,000 --> 00:52:52,640
i can have stuff happen a thousand years

1483
00:52:51,440 --> 00:52:55,040
ago and it doesn't really impact the

1484
00:52:52,640 --> 00:52:56,880
campaign now but yeah yeah

1485
00:52:55,040 --> 00:52:59,359
you know and all that kind of stuff

1486
00:52:56,880 --> 00:53:02,000
and likewise with the with the total

1487
00:52:59,359 --> 00:53:03,520
sorcerer i was like i wasn't really

1488
00:53:02,000 --> 00:53:05,599
planning to have talk you know talk was

1489
00:53:03,520 --> 00:53:07,119
wandering around but again

1490
00:53:05,599 --> 00:53:09,200
what implications does that have on the

1491
00:53:07,119 --> 00:53:11,119
world why aren't they maybe wandering

1492
00:53:09,200 --> 00:53:12,640
around do they keep themselves to

1493
00:53:11,119 --> 00:53:16,000
themselves on this little lost island

1494
00:53:12,640 --> 00:53:17,839
over here and so on and so on so it was

1495
00:53:16,000 --> 00:53:19,440
tricky at the time

1496
00:53:17,839 --> 00:53:21,599
but i am much like you've described

1497
00:53:19,440 --> 00:53:23,359
earlier on super looking forward to that

1498
00:53:21,599 --> 00:53:25,200
payoff of when those players get to

1499
00:53:23,359 --> 00:53:26,559
those points and go

1500
00:53:25,200 --> 00:53:28,970
oh

1501
00:53:26,559 --> 00:53:31,440
that explains the last 100 sessions

1502
00:53:28,970 --> 00:53:33,839
[Laughter]

1503
00:53:31,440 --> 00:53:35,440
you know those those are the things and

1504
00:53:33,839 --> 00:53:37,680
and the worst part is is that there's a

1505
00:53:35,440 --> 00:53:40,160
lot of stuff that dungeon masters plan

1506
00:53:37,680 --> 00:53:43,119
out there that never gets picked up

1507
00:53:40,160 --> 00:53:47,119
and so when it does even if it is 100

1508
00:53:43,119 --> 00:53:48,640
sessions in it's still a great feeling

1509
00:53:47,119 --> 00:53:51,920
hey you guys have really been paying

1510
00:53:48,640 --> 00:53:53,040
attention that was a long time ago

1511
00:53:51,920 --> 00:53:53,920
thanks

1512
00:53:53,040 --> 00:53:57,200
it's

1513
00:53:53,920 --> 00:53:59,760
that that moment's really great yeah i'm

1514
00:53:57,200 --> 00:54:01,599
i'm really looking forward to a couple

1515
00:53:59,760 --> 00:54:03,839
of yeah those those big reveals that are

1516
00:54:01,599 --> 00:54:06,480
coming up just to really be like

1517
00:54:03,839 --> 00:54:08,480
you know to the player here's this

1518
00:54:06,480 --> 00:54:09,599
paragraph of text you gave me two years

1519
00:54:08,480 --> 00:54:12,000
ago

1520
00:54:09,599 --> 00:54:14,240
there is believe me meet me halfway

1521
00:54:12,000 --> 00:54:15,599
believe me there is a payoff

1522
00:54:14,240 --> 00:54:18,079
and am i

1523
00:54:15,599 --> 00:54:19,520
fairly certain it will be worth it uh

1524
00:54:18,079 --> 00:54:21,680
and of course they'll

1525
00:54:19,520 --> 00:54:23,200
take some weird and wacky root to it and

1526
00:54:21,680 --> 00:54:24,400
surprise the hell out of me but hey

1527
00:54:23,200 --> 00:54:26,319
that's

1528
00:54:24,400 --> 00:54:28,079
that's why i'm looking forward to it

1529
00:54:26,319 --> 00:54:29,920
that's why it's called adaptation or

1530
00:54:28,079 --> 00:54:32,880
whatever you dub it to

1531
00:54:29,920 --> 00:54:34,000
in post yeah

1532
00:54:32,880 --> 00:54:35,280
um

1533
00:54:34,000 --> 00:54:37,200
there's one more thing that i wanted to

1534
00:54:35,280 --> 00:54:38,880
talk about briefly

1535
00:54:37,200 --> 00:54:41,280
is that obviously we've come at this so

1536
00:54:38,880 --> 00:54:43,200
far from a dm's perspective

1537
00:54:41,280 --> 00:54:44,480
but also the other side of that coin is

1538
00:54:43,200 --> 00:54:47,920
as a player

1539
00:54:44,480 --> 00:54:47,920
it's very easy to be

1540
00:54:48,000 --> 00:54:51,440
self-centered has a negative connotation

1541
00:54:49,920 --> 00:54:53,119
but obviously

1542
00:54:51,440 --> 00:54:54,319
you're trying to embody a character so

1543
00:54:53,119 --> 00:54:56,240
it's inevitable that you're going to be

1544
00:54:54,319 --> 00:54:58,480
very focused on

1545
00:54:56,240 --> 00:55:00,640
what that character is doing

1546
00:54:58,480 --> 00:55:02,640
what i wanted to talk about is how as a

1547
00:55:00,640 --> 00:55:04,960
player you could be more

1548
00:55:02,640 --> 00:55:06,480
accommodating and flexible to the other

1549
00:55:04,960 --> 00:55:07,520
players and you know say one of your

1550
00:55:06,480 --> 00:55:10,640
other

1551
00:55:07,520 --> 00:55:11,599
your traveling party does something

1552
00:55:10,640 --> 00:55:14,319
weird

1553
00:55:11,599 --> 00:55:16,160
how how can you as a player

1554
00:55:14,319 --> 00:55:19,680
hit the middle of that venn diagram that

1555
00:55:16,160 --> 00:55:20,640
i was uh defining earlier on

1556
00:55:19,680 --> 00:55:22,319
you know we're going to come back to

1557
00:55:20,640 --> 00:55:25,119
this one thing i was like i think a lot

1558
00:55:22,319 --> 00:55:27,520
of it comes down to to trust

1559
00:55:25,119 --> 00:55:29,839
you know the the explanation that's what

1560
00:55:27,520 --> 00:55:31,040
my character would do almost universally

1561
00:55:29,839 --> 00:55:32,079
comes

1562
00:55:31,040 --> 00:55:34,720
at

1563
00:55:32,079 --> 00:55:38,000
the worst time nobody ever uses that as

1564
00:55:34,720 --> 00:55:40,400
a defense in a very justifiable

1565
00:55:38,000 --> 00:55:42,000
moment like you just don't that is

1566
00:55:40,400 --> 00:55:44,000
that is the hey

1567
00:55:42,000 --> 00:55:46,319
you need to stop being upset about what

1568
00:55:44,000 --> 00:55:48,480
just happened for this reason and that's

1569
00:55:46,319 --> 00:55:50,319
that's just why that's used

1570
00:55:48,480 --> 00:55:51,680
and in

1571
00:55:50,319 --> 00:55:54,319
in a group that doesn't know each other

1572
00:55:51,680 --> 00:55:56,000
hasn't been a long very while

1573
00:55:54,319 --> 00:55:58,400
you can see

1574
00:55:56,000 --> 00:56:01,280
something that is unexpected

1575
00:55:58,400 --> 00:56:03,920
and expect that to be the reason

1576
00:56:01,280 --> 00:56:07,040
but it's not it's part of a longer

1577
00:56:03,920 --> 00:56:08,240
longer character arc that the player

1578
00:56:07,040 --> 00:56:10,559
is

1579
00:56:08,240 --> 00:56:12,559
experiencing or part of within the

1580
00:56:10,559 --> 00:56:14,400
narrative this could be the first thing

1581
00:56:12,559 --> 00:56:17,119
that it kicks off their arc in their

1582
00:56:14,400 --> 00:56:20,640
head that you are going to watch unfold

1583
00:56:17,119 --> 00:56:23,359
as a both viewer and participant in this

1584
00:56:20,640 --> 00:56:25,839
endeavor of playing this game

1585
00:56:23,359 --> 00:56:27,520
and that's that's a lot of fun and it

1586
00:56:25,839 --> 00:56:29,680
comes with a group that's been together

1587
00:56:27,520 --> 00:56:30,880
for a while and you kind of can know

1588
00:56:29,680 --> 00:56:33,760
these moments

1589
00:56:30,880 --> 00:56:35,599
don't worry he's building to something

1590
00:56:33,760 --> 00:56:37,040
as a player

1591
00:56:35,599 --> 00:56:39,280
the other

1592
00:56:37,040 --> 00:56:41,440
thing is just like we said at the

1593
00:56:39,280 --> 00:56:44,799
beginning when it's from dungeon masters

1594
00:56:41,440 --> 00:56:47,599
be willing to meet people halfway um

1595
00:56:44,799 --> 00:56:50,720
in a couple of regards one with maybe

1596
00:56:47,599 --> 00:56:52,880
the style of story as it's presented to

1597
00:56:50,720 --> 00:56:54,160
you by the dungeon master might not be

1598
00:56:52,880 --> 00:56:56,079
your

1599
00:56:54,160 --> 00:56:57,680
you know your top hit your number one

1600
00:56:56,079 --> 00:56:59,920
choice

1601
00:56:57,680 --> 00:57:02,559
be open to

1602
00:56:59,920 --> 00:57:05,680
plenty different kinds different styles

1603
00:57:02,559 --> 00:57:09,280
of of games you might enjoy it

1604
00:57:05,680 --> 00:57:11,760
be be open to that be open to other play

1605
00:57:09,280 --> 00:57:16,000
styles other than your own this game is

1606
00:57:11,760 --> 00:57:18,480
inherently a group of people and

1607
00:57:16,000 --> 00:57:22,000
yes we talked about earlier basic

1608
00:57:18,480 --> 00:57:24,000
general human decency in a group setting

1609
00:57:22,000 --> 00:57:25,760
will go a long way

1610
00:57:24,000 --> 00:57:26,559
if you're playing with somebody who's

1611
00:57:25,760 --> 00:57:28,480
new

1612
00:57:26,559 --> 00:57:29,359
be a little more patient you are new to

1613
00:57:28,480 --> 00:57:30,480
once

1614
00:57:29,359 --> 00:57:32,000
if you

1615
00:57:30,480 --> 00:57:34,480
you know playing with somebody who you

1616
00:57:32,000 --> 00:57:36,160
think doesn't act in character give it a

1617
00:57:34,480 --> 00:57:38,160
little bit they might be building

1618
00:57:36,160 --> 00:57:40,240
towards something that you just don't

1619
00:57:38,160 --> 00:57:41,680
see because they're really invested in

1620
00:57:40,240 --> 00:57:44,559
their character and the role play

1621
00:57:41,680 --> 00:57:46,559
thereof you've done it we've all done it

1622
00:57:44,559 --> 00:57:47,520
i get to do it you know every episode

1623
00:57:46,559 --> 00:57:50,160
all day

1624
00:57:47,520 --> 00:57:53,200
so just just be open to that you know

1625
00:57:50,160 --> 00:57:55,440
most most of the issues of people that

1626
00:57:53,200 --> 00:57:58,559
arise from you know group interactions

1627
00:57:55,440 --> 00:58:01,359
and playing d d is more about

1628
00:57:58,559 --> 00:58:03,280
lack of social skills than it is lack of

1629
00:58:01,359 --> 00:58:05,440
game knowledge

1630
00:58:03,280 --> 00:58:07,359
everybody you know the toxic person the

1631
00:58:05,440 --> 00:58:09,280
gatekeeper has nothing to do with how

1632
00:58:07,359 --> 00:58:11,599
much they know about dungeons and

1633
00:58:09,280 --> 00:58:13,680
dragons it's because they

1634
00:58:11,599 --> 00:58:14,559
a not an awful person but you know

1635
00:58:13,680 --> 00:58:16,960
they're not

1636
00:58:14,559 --> 00:58:18,960
presenting themselves in a positive way

1637
00:58:16,960 --> 00:58:21,359
and those are the negative things you

1638
00:58:18,960 --> 00:58:23,839
eliminate those and everybody has a lot

1639
00:58:21,359 --> 00:58:26,079
of really good interactions those paint

1640
00:58:23,839 --> 00:58:28,720
every probably not every but a good

1641
00:58:26,079 --> 00:58:30,640
amount of negative interactions nobody

1642
00:58:28,720 --> 00:58:32,880
really gets mad

1643
00:58:30,640 --> 00:58:35,119
about the time the druid didn't wild

1644
00:58:32,880 --> 00:58:37,359
shape when you thought they should but

1645
00:58:35,119 --> 00:58:39,200
you know the time somebody said racist

1646
00:58:37,359 --> 00:58:41,359
or sexist things at your table that's

1647
00:58:39,200 --> 00:58:43,760
what you're gonna remember mm-hmm

1648
00:58:41,359 --> 00:58:45,119
yeah yeah i've got a oh well a couple of

1649
00:58:43,760 --> 00:58:49,440
my players uh

1650
00:58:45,119 --> 00:58:51,920
i have a delightful mix of min max's to

1651
00:58:49,440 --> 00:58:54,400
heavy role players and everything in

1652
00:58:51,920 --> 00:58:56,480
between so so sometimes there is a

1653
00:58:54,400 --> 00:58:59,599
little bit of a

1654
00:58:56,480 --> 00:59:02,000
why did you go through gritted teeth why

1655
00:58:59,599 --> 00:59:04,480
didn't you run away or why why did you

1656
00:59:02,000 --> 00:59:06,960
attack that thing

1657
00:59:04,480 --> 00:59:07,839
and it's like well

1658
00:59:06,960 --> 00:59:09,599
you know

1659
00:59:07,839 --> 00:59:11,359
they're still

1660
00:59:09,599 --> 00:59:13,440
as you said learning the game and

1661
00:59:11,359 --> 00:59:15,520
learning where the boundaries are i

1662
00:59:13,440 --> 00:59:17,760
guess there's soft boundaries in this

1663
00:59:15,520 --> 00:59:19,599
case uh of like

1664
00:59:17,760 --> 00:59:21,440
how far can i push it

1665
00:59:19,599 --> 00:59:23,680
with this character and and his

1666
00:59:21,440 --> 00:59:24,720
interactions with other characters and

1667
00:59:23,680 --> 00:59:26,799
that is

1668
00:59:24,720 --> 00:59:27,520
different from a dm's perspective quite

1669
00:59:26,799 --> 00:59:28,960
a

1670
00:59:27,520 --> 00:59:32,079
an interesting

1671
00:59:28,960 --> 00:59:34,319
thing to to watch grow to watch mature

1672
00:59:32,079 --> 00:59:36,799
to see those connections being made and

1673
00:59:34,319 --> 00:59:39,520
then perhaps broken later on because

1674
00:59:36,799 --> 00:59:40,640
that player character dies or they do

1675
00:59:39,520 --> 00:59:43,280
something

1676
00:59:40,640 --> 00:59:45,040
unusual because they finally as like

1677
00:59:43,280 --> 00:59:47,040
your cleric example from earlier on just

1678
00:59:45,040 --> 00:59:48,720
hit their limit and have said enough is

1679
00:59:47,040 --> 00:59:50,480
enough that those are the kind of very

1680
00:59:48,720 --> 00:59:54,079
interesting and dynamic encounters that

1681
00:59:50,480 --> 00:59:56,240
uh i love to to see come to fruition

1682
00:59:54,079 --> 00:59:57,760
the the we go back to the cleric

1683
00:59:56,240 --> 01:00:00,720
situation

1684
00:59:57,760 --> 01:00:03,200
there was definitely a change of

1685
01:00:00,720 --> 01:00:04,960
the group dynamic not the not the

1686
01:00:03,200 --> 01:00:07,599
players away you know out of character

1687
01:00:04,960 --> 01:00:09,680
but in character there's a very dramatic

1688
01:00:07,599 --> 01:00:12,480
change in

1689
01:00:09,680 --> 01:00:15,680
the relationship amongst the group

1690
01:00:12,480 --> 01:00:17,359
when the cleric killed the npc

1691
01:00:15,680 --> 01:00:19,200
you know all of it within character out

1692
01:00:17,359 --> 01:00:20,720
of character everybody was like you know

1693
01:00:19,200 --> 01:00:22,640
that was crazy i can't believe you did

1694
01:00:20,720 --> 01:00:25,359
that but in character everybody was you

1695
01:00:22,640 --> 01:00:28,079
know i thought i knew somebody you used

1696
01:00:25,359 --> 01:00:29,359
to be the voice of reason you were a

1697
01:00:28,079 --> 01:00:31,839
pacifist

1698
01:00:29,359 --> 01:00:34,640
this entire time and when

1699
01:00:31,839 --> 01:00:36,960
needing to fight you always chose a

1700
01:00:34,640 --> 01:00:38,400
different route and here you are

1701
01:00:36,960 --> 01:00:41,359
unprovoked

1702
01:00:38,400 --> 01:00:43,599
killing this major npc

1703
01:00:41,359 --> 01:00:45,839
and it was

1704
01:00:43,599 --> 01:00:47,520
like it changed obviously the next

1705
01:00:45,839 --> 01:00:49,599
episode because we ended it right there

1706
01:00:47,520 --> 01:00:51,680
just because nobody could think

1707
01:00:49,599 --> 01:00:53,040
but everybody you know we go back to

1708
01:00:51,680 --> 01:00:55,119
this thing maybe

1709
01:00:53,040 --> 01:00:58,640
made the it wasn't just a thing that

1710
01:00:55,119 --> 01:01:00,559
existed in a vacuum it was a new

1711
01:00:58,640 --> 01:01:02,640
wrinkle to a character that everybody in

1712
01:01:00,559 --> 01:01:04,960
the group thought that they had known

1713
01:01:02,640 --> 01:01:06,720
and in character everybody kind of

1714
01:01:04,960 --> 01:01:08,799
changed accordingly the barbarian

1715
01:01:06,720 --> 01:01:11,280
thought it was cool as hell embracing

1716
01:01:08,799 --> 01:01:13,680
your anger the wizard who's very or the

1717
01:01:11,280 --> 01:01:16,079
artificer who's very nice and like

1718
01:01:13,680 --> 01:01:18,640
accommodating was like hey it's okay

1719
01:01:16,079 --> 01:01:19,440
but the monk found it very disturbing

1720
01:01:18,640 --> 01:01:22,640
and

1721
01:01:19,440 --> 01:01:26,400
somewhat of a betrayal of trust almost

1722
01:01:22,640 --> 01:01:28,960
and it it played out and it still is uh

1723
01:01:26,400 --> 01:01:31,760
playing out uh every time the cleric now

1724
01:01:28,960 --> 01:01:35,280
decides whether to attack he's you know

1725
01:01:31,760 --> 01:01:37,280
back and forth on it situational to him

1726
01:01:35,280 --> 01:01:40,559
it's a character dynamic between the

1727
01:01:37,280 --> 01:01:42,559
monk and him you know why is it this why

1728
01:01:40,559 --> 01:01:44,720
is your first time to kill the npc why

1729
01:01:42,559 --> 01:01:47,200
did you fight this time and not this

1730
01:01:44,720 --> 01:01:48,799
time yeah and it's added this this

1731
01:01:47,200 --> 01:01:51,440
dynamic to

1732
01:01:48,799 --> 01:01:52,880
the party that didn't exist because your

1733
01:01:51,440 --> 01:01:54,720
your party doesn't have to be you know

1734
01:01:52,880 --> 01:01:56,640
happy and kumbaya

1735
01:01:54,720 --> 01:01:58,799
i don't i don't think that's

1736
01:01:56,640 --> 01:02:01,520
i don't know realistic is the right word

1737
01:01:58,799 --> 01:02:03,920
to use as to how a party in dungeons and

1738
01:02:01,520 --> 01:02:04,799
dragons is portrayed

1739
01:02:03,920 --> 01:02:06,559
but

1740
01:02:04,799 --> 01:02:09,119
any group of people is going to have

1741
01:02:06,559 --> 01:02:11,039
disagreements and i think

1742
01:02:09,119 --> 01:02:13,200
that when those surprising moments for

1743
01:02:11,039 --> 01:02:15,039
the players and the characters happen

1744
01:02:13,200 --> 01:02:17,039
that just like

1745
01:02:15,039 --> 01:02:19,200
you know if you were to jump up right

1746
01:02:17,039 --> 01:02:20,319
now and just start screaming at me and

1747
01:02:19,200 --> 01:02:22,240
be like wow that's really going to

1748
01:02:20,319 --> 01:02:24,960
change the dynamic of our relationship

1749
01:02:22,240 --> 01:02:26,319
moving forward that i think that that

1750
01:02:24,960 --> 01:02:27,760
it's

1751
01:02:26,319 --> 01:02:30,079
it's good play

1752
01:02:27,760 --> 01:02:32,160
to have those same things affect your

1753
01:02:30,079 --> 01:02:34,319
character in game rather than just

1754
01:02:32,160 --> 01:02:36,720
letting these shocking moments that took

1755
01:02:34,319 --> 01:02:38,480
everybody by surprise exist in a vacuum

1756
01:02:36,720 --> 01:02:40,559
and have everything go back to just the

1757
01:02:38,480 --> 01:02:42,480
way it was right before that moment

1758
01:02:40,559 --> 01:02:44,160
happened

1759
01:02:42,480 --> 01:02:45,920
yep yeah as we said earlier on as long

1760
01:02:44,160 --> 01:02:47,599
as it drives the narrative

1761
01:02:45,920 --> 01:02:48,799
in a meaningful

1762
01:02:47,599 --> 01:02:50,400
way

1763
01:02:48,799 --> 01:02:52,799
i'm on board

1764
01:02:50,400 --> 01:02:53,760
in a sensible way

1765
01:02:52,799 --> 01:02:55,760
is there anything that you wanted to

1766
01:02:53,760 --> 01:02:57,440
talk about that we might have missed um

1767
01:02:55,760 --> 01:02:59,039
please say hey just thanks for having me

1768
01:02:57,440 --> 01:03:01,039
on again these are always fun like

1769
01:02:59,039 --> 01:03:02,480
talking with you about these things

1770
01:03:01,039 --> 01:03:04,240
and

1771
01:03:02,480 --> 01:03:05,039
you know it's about

1772
01:03:04,240 --> 01:03:06,799
just

1773
01:03:05,039 --> 01:03:08,640
like i said you know our takeaway from

1774
01:03:06,799 --> 01:03:10,559
this dungeons and dragons discussion is

1775
01:03:08,640 --> 01:03:12,160
to just be a decent person

1776
01:03:10,559 --> 01:03:13,839
group dynamic

1777
01:03:12,160 --> 01:03:16,319
and work with other people seek

1778
01:03:13,839 --> 01:03:17,119
compromise don't step on other people's

1779
01:03:16,319 --> 01:03:19,760
fun

1780
01:03:17,119 --> 01:03:21,599
which i feel like is the majority of

1781
01:03:19,760 --> 01:03:22,880
dutchess and dragons can basically be

1782
01:03:21,599 --> 01:03:24,960
summed up into those things you're

1783
01:03:22,880 --> 01:03:27,440
having a bad experience

1784
01:03:24,960 --> 01:03:30,160
rectify most of these problems and you

1785
01:03:27,440 --> 01:03:32,000
will get to enjoy this game um but you

1786
01:03:30,160 --> 01:03:34,240
know while we're enjoying it if you're

1787
01:03:32,000 --> 01:03:37,359
free of those situations just

1788
01:03:34,240 --> 01:03:38,480
en enjoy the game uh make make it fun

1789
01:03:37,359 --> 01:03:41,599
don't

1790
01:03:38,480 --> 01:03:43,680
you know your your game at your table is

1791
01:03:41,599 --> 01:03:45,599
the is the best game in the world and

1792
01:03:43,680 --> 01:03:46,960
everybody's table is the best game in

1793
01:03:45,599 --> 01:03:49,359
the world because you're running it your

1794
01:03:46,960 --> 01:03:51,440
way for your players and whatever that

1795
01:03:49,359 --> 01:03:52,960
looks like um like i said the last time

1796
01:03:51,440 --> 01:03:55,680
i was on the show find out what your

1797
01:03:52,960 --> 01:03:56,799
players want and give it to them have a

1798
01:03:55,680 --> 01:03:58,400
good time

1799
01:03:56,799 --> 01:03:59,839
work the hardest you can to give them

1800
01:03:58,400 --> 01:04:02,400
the story that they want and the

1801
01:03:59,839 --> 01:04:05,119
investment they want and

1802
01:04:02,400 --> 01:04:07,520
everybody worked together to make this

1803
01:04:05,119 --> 01:04:09,920
this game fun for everybody that's it

1804
01:04:07,520 --> 01:04:11,920
perfect thank you thank you so much for

1805
01:04:09,920 --> 01:04:13,440
that manny is there anything that you

1806
01:04:11,920 --> 01:04:14,480
would like to

1807
01:04:13,440 --> 01:04:17,760
promote

1808
01:04:14,480 --> 01:04:20,480
um yeah so we uh i run two twitch

1809
01:04:17,760 --> 01:04:23,280
streams uh twitch.tv slash growed up

1810
01:04:20,480 --> 01:04:24,559
geek uh tuesday we tomorrow well by the

1811
01:04:23,280 --> 01:04:27,359
time this episode airs we'll go with

1812
01:04:24,559 --> 01:04:29,200
that we will be on our second campaign a

1813
01:04:27,359 --> 01:04:30,960
homebrew eberron campaign have been

1814
01:04:29,200 --> 01:04:33,839
working on for two years

1815
01:04:30,960 --> 01:04:36,240
keeping the same cast from our rhyme of

1816
01:04:33,839 --> 01:04:38,400
the frost maiden game that's going to

1817
01:04:36,240 --> 01:04:40,480
have ended and they wanted to stick

1818
01:04:38,400 --> 01:04:42,079
around and keep playing so we're going

1819
01:04:40,480 --> 01:04:44,720
to adjust to this

1820
01:04:42,079 --> 01:04:49,359
and then in about three weeks a month

1821
01:04:44,720 --> 01:04:51,839
from the time this airs january 12 2022

1822
01:04:49,359 --> 01:04:54,640
we're going to be debuting our limited

1823
01:04:51,839 --> 01:04:57,200
campaign on wednesday nights uh called

1824
01:04:54,640 --> 01:04:59,119
dynasty of dragons that we're very very

1825
01:04:57,200 --> 01:05:01,680
excited about uh with the release of

1826
01:04:59,119 --> 01:05:03,280
fizbands oh yeah coming up i've wanted

1827
01:05:01,680 --> 01:05:05,839
to do a dragon campaign that wasn't

1828
01:05:03,280 --> 01:05:06,799
tyranny of dragons which i've

1829
01:05:05,839 --> 01:05:08,799
we're not even going to get into that

1830
01:05:06,799 --> 01:05:09,920
but i wanted to do a dragon campaign so

1831
01:05:08,799 --> 01:05:12,000
we're gonna do a dragon campaign in

1832
01:05:09,920 --> 01:05:14,160
january i'm super excited awesome

1833
01:05:12,000 --> 01:05:16,400
amazing well as usual and as they were

1834
01:05:14,160 --> 01:05:19,440
on the emotion episode all the links

1835
01:05:16,400 --> 01:05:21,520
will be in the episode description so uh

1836
01:05:19,440 --> 01:05:23,200
all that's left for me to say is finally

1837
01:05:21,520 --> 01:05:26,079
